From the Mayor A message from Cllr Pat Moore I feel privileged and honoured to have been chosen to represent you all as Mayor of Ramsgate this year. When I accepted this position, I knew it had to be for the benefit of the town as a whole. So I am willing to appear at any function, however small, with best bib and tucker, including hat! To represent you means to me to be well dressed, knowledgeable about whatever I am to be involved with, and to tell everyone I meet about the beauty of Ramsgate and what we have to offer. That includes the only Royal Harbour in the country, beautiful beaches, and good food at a variety of restaurants . Our

heritage and history are well represented by our wonderful historic buildings including a synagogue. You will not find one of those in every town in Kent. I am grateful for this opportunity and I will try never to let you down. I find that if you smile and are nice to people, they will usually smile back and be nice themselves. There is so much to celebrate about Ramsgate . I hope that in a small way I can help the town put on a cheerful face over the coming year, and that I will meet as many people as possible.

At the annual meeting of Ramsgate Town Council on May 7, Cllr Patricia Moore was elected as Mayor of Ramsgate for 2014/15 and Cllr Mary Dwyer was re-elected as deputy mayor. The chairs of council committees are now as follows: Cllr Kay Dark Amenities Committee Cllr Richard Nicholson Finance & General Purposes Committee Cllr Corinna Huxley Planning & Environment Committee Cllr Peter Campbell Town Promotion Committee The calendar of meetings can be found on the website under Information and Consultation, and the new Ramsgate Fund and events funding application forms are available there too.

What’s new in Ramsgate this summer? The biggest news by far this summer has got to be the new jewel in the crown of the Isle of Thanet. We already have one jewel in form of the only Royal Harbour in the UK. Now we can add the most amazing tourist attraction: the Ramsgate Tunnels, now open for the world to see. Why are our tunnels a jewel? They are unique. Most tunnels are built for the military, railways or transport. Ours were built as a life-saving retreat for tens of thousands of Ramsgate people during the Second World War and, indeed, they saved countless lives. The tunnels were the brainchild of town mayor of the day, “Top Hatted Mayor” Cllr ABC Kemp, who went to the government three times before permission was given. The tunnels were built by Kentish miners and stretch three miles, with a further mile of railway tunnel.

to a Tea Party On The Sands from 11am-4pm - and 20,000 turned up! We want 1,000 people to bring their own picnic on to the sands on the same date this year. We will supply five hours of live entertainment from Thanet’s Top Talent with Starlite, a fancy dress of red, white and blue in any costume and the very best beach party ever in Ramsgate. On Saturday 13 July the Friends of Ellington Park held a superb event to commemorate 100 years since the First World War began, with military bands, displays and a drum head service. The whole event showed the spirit of working together and of community that makes Ramsgate special.

The Ramsgate Tunnels are currently open five days a week, excluding Mondays and Tuesdays, with guided tours at 10am, 12pm, 2pm and 4pm, you can book through the VIC in the Custom House or online.

The above is in addition to our already very busy events programme for a very special year: Thanet at War, Ramsgate Carnival, the Summer Squall, Addington Street Fair, Teddy Bears Picnic, Viking Model Ships Rally and Ramsgate Week - the sailing regatta known as the second-best in the UK only to Cowes.

Staying with the Top Hatted Mayor, 75 years ago on Sunday, August 3, ABC Kemp invited 1,000 people of Ramsgate

Ramsgate Town Council’s vision Ramsgate Town Council (RTC) has limited formal powers and responsibilities, but many of your town councillors are also members of Thanet District Council and so able to bring the needs of the town and its residents to attention at this higher level. The town council is working hard to improve Ramsgate and campaign for initiatives to increase prosperity and encourage new visitors. Some current work includes: Active Ramsgate Through Explore Kent and over the next months a new canoe trail, bike rides and walking trails will be established, gaining Ramsgate publicity through Visit Kent and Visit Britain. We’d like the town to become a destination for active pursuits and will encourage any related activities and enterprise. Through our website and Active Ramsgate we can link and promote businesses and activities. The fishing event on September 27 is a new sports activity that we hope to make an annual event. Royal Harbour Square RTC is in negotiation to take over management of Pier Yard (outside the Maritime Museum) and turn it into a space for activities and entertainment instead of a car park. Clean Up Ramsgate The planters in town (by the Post Office, Harbour Street and York Street) have been brightened up with shrubs and plants. We have organised with TDC for a “deep clean” of the pedestrian area and harbour road and are working with the Town Team to encourage businesses to brighten premises with plantings of flowers. The Micro Museum Tucked away on Church Hill, off the upper High Street in Ramsgate and next to the gates of the beautiful St. George’s Church, is a small, ordinary-looking shop front with a sign in the window for The Micro Museum. But that modest entrance area hides a surprise. When visitors pass through reception into the museum, the remark we hear most often is: “Wow! I didn’t realise it was this big!” As the owners of the museum, my husband Mike and I love sharing our enthusiasm for vintage computers and games with our visitors. Mike is happy to guide you around the many exhibits in our collection, giving you interesting snippets of information, or you can just wander around and make your own discoveries. And we won’t mind at all if you can’t help exclaiming: “Oh look, I had one of those!” The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. Adults love to indulge in a bit of nostalgia and linger to chat about the quirks of their first computer or compare notes about the pros and cons of different makes and models, sometimes with other visitors they have never met before but who they find have an interest in common. Then there are the old, but very addictive, games where adults can attempt to repeat the high scores they used to get or simply show off their skills to the kids… or be utterly wiped out by the youngsters. Visitors with a bit of patience can key in a BASIC (computer language) program on a BBC computer to create shapes

10

and patterns on a screen. Anyone out there remember the BBC micro and the TV series in the early 1980s that was designed to make computing accessible to everyone? We have just completed two Saturday events all about robots. No one was brave enough to come along dressed up as a robot but everyone had a good

time looking around the regular and new exhibits and trying out the remotecontrolled toy robots. Kids did the quiz and a free raffle ticket was given to every visitor. Prize draws were made on the second event day. Maplins store in Westwood donated a super robot arm kit as the grand raffle prize as well as some of the other prizes and we thank the manager and staff for their support. We have decided to extend the 2014 Season until September 27 with the following times and days: Open from 10am to 4pm every Saturday in July, August and September and on August Bank Holiday Monday. If you haven’t visited yet, come along and see if you say “Wow! “ at the Micro Museum. Carol Deer The Micro Museum

Over the August bank holiday weekend and with the support of Thanet District Council, the Ramsgate Maritime Museum will be hosting the all-new Great British Seaside Festival. From August 23-25, the Royal Harbour will be a grand celebration of the seaside and all things British. Families will love our traditional funfair with helter skelter, ferris wheel, and Victorian carousel – or catch a RIB to see the seals over at Goodwin Sands. Children can enjoy Punch and Judy shows, art workshops and learning all about the fascinating shipwrecks on the Goodwin Sands. There will also be a programme of talks and demonstrations at the museum, including an interactive weather workshop with BBC TV’s Kaddy Lee-Preston!

Connor needs a cure Connor is a lovely and gentle four year old boy. He lives with his parents Georgina and Wayne Olsen and baby brother Kye in Westgate on Sea in Kent. The family only discovered that Connor has a Duchene Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) in March 2013. DMD is a very rare muscle wasting disease that will rapidly affect every muscle in his body including his heart. DMD is caused by a defect occurring in his gene and in Connor’s case this was spontaneous and could happen to anybody. DMD will see Connor in a full time power

wheelchair by around 10 years old and most boys with DMD do not survive their 20s. Connor is unaware of his illness and his parents would like it to stay that way for the moment. Although there isn’t a cure yet for this cruel disease, we will keep our fingers crossed that with your support one can be found before it is too late. We invite you to organise, host an event or make a donation. The caring for Connor campaign needs to raise enough money to send our little man for the treatment he needs.

Four years ago, when I was deputy mayor of Ramsgate, we decided to set up for the second time a community group for event organisers aiming to work together in support of each other. The idea was to bring like-minded folk with event interests into a team working for Ramsgate and its future, the group being called Ramsgate Event Organisers - or REO. Several of the groups had managed to acquire equipment needed to stage various outdoor events. The Starlite Group had five marquees, lighting and heating for the same, tables, chairs, a PA system. Thanet at War had further marquees and equipment, and it made sense to pool our equipment. It was decided to share what we had and to seek support from the newly formed Ramsgate Town Council (RTC) to gain more of this muchneeded event equipment. RTC has been extremely helpful and generous, which has helped the combined event organisers of Ramsgate to go from strength to strength and the future of the town’s events are secure.

Thanet District Council and the town council each put £30,000 of public money a year into a fund to support Ramsgate events and this money is then allocated by a town council committee, chaired by Cllr Peter Campbell. One of the best things to come out of REO Is Ramsgate Rocks, which is a free 48-page pocket-sized booklet listing 12 months of events and these are available from the Ramsgate Visitors Information Centre in the Custom House.

If you are involved in any of Ramsgate’s events or wish to get involved then please get in touch and together we can make a huge difference to the quality of life in our town. Please pick up your copy of Ramsgate Rocks and then you can sure that you don’t miss anything. The audience are even more important than the organisers - without you, our efforts are wasted. Active Ramsgate success First phase of Active Ramsgate initiative boosts local economy by over £161k A Ramsgate Town Council regeneration initiative entitled Active Ramsgate has brought in over £161,000 into the town’s economy in just one year - exceeding targets by 75%. The initiative, managed by Explore Kent, is designed to support economic regeneration by promoting the area through its outdoor activities, such as walking, cycling and geocaching trails. Since its launch event at Ramsgate waterfront in June 2013, the project has attracted an additional 6,240 walkers into the area, 5,460 day visitors and 2,324 overnight stays, significantly boosting income to local tourism businesses in the town. Activities during the year have included: Appointment of national sailing champion Sam Brearey as the face of Active Ramsgate Three new walks developed with corresponding online guides available on the Active Ramsgate website Promotion of local geocaching sites and

trails and the Viking Coastal cycling trail Regular special offers from local businesses PR and marketing campaign including familiarisation trips for journalists. Peter Campbell from Ramsgate Town Council said of the results: “We are thrilled with the success of the Active Ramsgate initiative to date; local businesses have reported an uplift in visitors and the whole area has benefitted immensely from the additional income. We’ve got a vibrant proposition to talk about, there’s so many outdoor activities available in the area that we’ve only managed to touch on a few so far. There’s a whole raft of activities planned over the next 12 months to build on the success of the first year”. Forthcoming activities planned for the year include launch events for new activities and facilities alongside a regular programme of events for those looking for new and interesting outdoor activities.

Ramsgate is to have its own fish festival on Saturday September 27 There will be a fishing competition for three classes of competitors, a farmers’ market and craft fair celebrating fishing and fish culinary skills and dishes. The town has had a long history of fishing and maritime activities. Sadly, as with so many ports, Ramsgate’s fishing fleet is much smaller than its pre-WW1 heyday, but it is still active and needs our support by eating more fish and shellfish. By holding a fish festival, Ramsgate Town Council hopes to promote the eating of fish by both residents and visitors. In the week leading up to the competition, catering businesses large and small will be asked to offer at least one fish dish. Be it the humble fish finger or the rather more prestigious speciality fish dish, it does not matter. The fishing competition will be ticket only (obtainable online or from the Visitors Information Centre) prior to the competition or on the day. There will be three classes; Senior, Junior and Visitors. Prizes will be in the form of vouchers for the fishing tackle of your

choice and can be redeemed at the Fisherman’s Corner, your local fishing tackle shop, at Kent Steps near the Harbour. Juniors will fish from the Pier Wall and Seniors and Visitors from the eastern beach. The competition will start at 10am and finish at 3pm; with a weigh-in and prizegiving at 4pm. Ramsgate has not had a fishing competition for many years, so it is hoped that this competition will reignite local interest in sea fishing and possibly be the start of a fishing club for the town.

A Fish Festival for Ramsgate

As well as a fishing competition, we hope to run a farmers market and craft fair offering the best of foods, food ingredients or arts and crafts from Ramsgate, Thanet and the surrounding area. All stall holders will be asked to create a fish dish, ingredient containing fish or arts and craft design in keeping with the fish festival. There will be something for everyone to try, eat or buy, so look out for the notices, flyers or web advert in the period leading up to the event.

A Summer Squall 2014 Our annual festival of all things creative is now in its fifth year, which seems amazing to the team of people who run the event. Launched by Ramsgate Arts in 2010, the planning, organisation and operation on the day is all done by a collective of local people, some who are artists or arts professionals, others from all walks of life, who just want to contribute to the town and help to create a vibrant atmosphere for local people as well as attract new visitors to come to the area. This year’s event runs from Saturday, August 23 to Monday, 25, the bank holiday weekend. Ramsgate Arts has secured funding from Thanet District Council, Ramsgate Town Council, Arts Council England and Community First. There are three days of entertainment, almost all free of charge. It’s hugely family-friendly, but there are also shows for a ‘“grown-up’” audience.

Some of this year’s highlights include: • Celloman (Sat 8.30pm) FREE • Opera Naked (Sun 7.30pm) FREE • Joli Vyann (Mon) Circus/dance/theatre workshop & performance FREE • Thanet Open Studios (August 9/10/18/19/23/24/25) 30 artists across Thanet showing their work FREE • Brockley Ukulele Band (Sun) FREE • Workshops and the Market Squalls on the harbour, all FREE Visit www.ramsgatearts.org for the full programme, or pick up a copy at the Custom House We also run the Looping the Loop festival of live art, with a season from September 19-21. If you want to keep up to date with inspiring, creative shows and activities, please join our mailing list through info@ramsgatearts.org or like us on Facebook Ramsgate Arts and Looping the Loop!

Janet Fielding Interview How long have you lived in Ramsgate?

What are your ambitions?

I bought my house in 2006 but I didn’t get to move in until the middle of 2008 because it was a complete Grade II listed wreck.

My ambition is to have an enjoyable life and most of the time I enjoy Project MotorHouse enormously.

Why did you start helping the local community? I blame my local residents association. I lived in Liverpool Lawn when I first arrived and it has a great community feeling. All the houses face each other, so you do meet people easily. What are your earliest memories of Ramsgate? I’d never been to Thanet before I decided to move to the coast. But I wanted to move to move to a seaside town with sandy beaches and within easy reach of London. A friend told me about Ramsgate so I decided to take a look. I saw that wonderful harbour and it was love at first sight.

What are you currently working on or towards in Ramsgate? I am working on Project MotorHouse, which is turning the old Motor Museum into a multi-use venue with an indoor/ outdoor theatre, cinema and restaurant/ bar, a shop and offices. We also want to use it as somewhere local youth can learn how to run their own business. We want to steer them towards jobs in the eco sector. Why did you start this current project? The building holds up the West Cliff Promenade and the main access road into Ramsgate. It was derelict and I could see that if something wasn’t done, Ramsgate would have an almighty problem on its hands.

Where did you get the idea from to start this? I walked around the town talking to people of all ages about what they thought the town needed. I used to sit outside the Galley Café with a coffee and trap people as they came past. The ideas came from the community. What can Ramsgate look forward to from you in the future? I have no idea what I am going to do after I get this is up and running. I think it’s going to fill my horizon for a good few years yet. How do you feel your contribution has helped or made a difference to Ramsgate? Well, I hope it will help make Ramsgate a more attractive place to live. At present, there are several derelict sites spoiling our waterfront - Royal Sands, the Pavilion and the old Motor Museum. This will solve one of those problems as well as providing better connectivity between the port and the top of the cliff. Where do you see yourself helping the community in a year’s time? We are working with the students of Ellington & Hereson School and I am hoping we will expand and broaden what we are doing with them. I would also like to see construction underway at The MotorHouse. We’ve removed the asbestos. We know we’ve got some real problems with the frame of the building and we’ve put in temporary propping. It’s terribly important that we get the safety angle right. The engineer is about to go in and assess what we can and can’t save. TDC have come up with £20K but that won’t even touch the sides so I see myself in the midst of some major fund raising.

John Smiddy Smith Interview How long have you lived in Ramsgate? Since 2006, moved here from Broadstairs Why did you start helping the local community? I felt that a lot of emphasis in Thanet was on Margate, and Ramsgate didn’t get publicity it deserved. As a photographer I am able to bring the beauty of our town to life for others to see. So publishing my photos is my way of trying to bring tourism and awareness back to Ramsgate to help boost its economy in any way I can. What are your earliest memories of Ramsgate? As a child I used to enjoy the amusements arcade that stretch up Marine Esplanade. I used to hop on the train at weekends through the summer with friends and spend the day here. Back then, I lived near Canterbury, so it was a great day out. What are your ambitions? I’d love to one day open a gallery and studio for my photographic work within Ramsgate - do my bit for the town and help the economy grow, not just in the sense of revenue, but awareness that Ramsgate is a beautiful town with much to offer. What are you currently working on or towards in Ramsgate? I am currently chairman and co-founder

26

of the Royal Harbour Photographic Group. We have a Facebook page under that name and in the last 11 months since we began, we have gained over 230 members, mostly photographers from Thanet, who contribute with pictures on the page. We have monthly competitions and occasional exhibitions. We are always looking for locations willing to exhibit the group’s art work. If anyone owns a business and feels they could benefit from hanging our art, please get in touch and help more people see our town as we do. Why did you start this current project? A chance meeting one evening on Sion Hill overlooking the harbour with cofounder Linda Ryder brought about the birth of the group. We were both there photographing a movie scene being filmed in the harbour. Our discussions led us to the question: “Why wasn’t there a photographic group in Ramsgate?” Margate had one, after all, but it never seemed to take off in Ramsgate. So we took up the challenge and asked a few local businesses if we could use their premises after hours to meet as a group and discuss photography. We now meet fortnightly at Gerry’s Coffee and Art House. We also meet regularly outside of the scheduled meetings and take photos together locally and on excursions to Kent’s attractions, such as Dover Castle, local zoos and wildlife parks, etc.

it has brought together like-minded hobbyists, semi-professional and professional photographers to a place where we all share and promote the local town and community. With 230-plus members, we’re going from strength to strength and our name is fast becoming familiar to local businesses and media alike. Where do you see yourself helping the community in a years time? I’d like to say I hope my work is more recognisable a year from today and that I have in some small way helped put Ramsgate back on the map with my pictures, and injected a bit of romance into the hearts of locals for our town. It’s a great place to live!

Where did you get the idea from to start this? Local photographers showed great interest in the idea and things kind of just developed (pardon the pun) from there. What can Ramsgate look forward to from you in the future? Lots of art, photographs and exhibitions, as well as coverage of local events. and hopefully a shop front from which I will continue to promote our town and its great scenery. How do you feel your contribution has helped or made a difference to Ramsgate? I would say the greatest contribution has been the forming of the group, as

Letters Dear Ramsgate Town Council, What a marvellous turn out the bucket and spade run was this year. It was wonderful to see so many well-kept vintage cars, vans and bikes. It all seemed to be very well organised! What a let down the surroundings were though! Uncut grass, beautiful rose beds ridden with weeds, where has our pride in Ramsgate gone? As a true Ramsgatonien I remember when the grass was all well-kept and trimmed and certainly no weeds on this scale. Surely we want people to return but I am not sure they will want to. Can’t something be done, it is a disgrace. Mr & Mrs E W Mills

Ramsgate Town Council’s response The town council hopes that residents have noticed the recent environmental improvements, including the new planting of the town centre beds, the large potted palms and the new planting in the Military Road arches. Nevertheless, we share Mr and Mrs Mills’ concerns - and town councillors have been actively trying to address them. Weeds and grass cutting on the highway, grass verges and roundabouts are the responsibility of Kent County Council. Both Thanet District Council and Ramsgate town councillors have expressed the view that this work is under-resourced and due to time constraints does not appear to be carried out with sufficient care and attention when it is done. Some promenade areas, parks and non-highway grass are, however, the responsibility of TDC itself. Given the reduced levels of funding available, TDC is increasingly looking to work with interested local groups to achieve the higher standards that residents and visitors rightly expect, and in our view this is the model most likely to achieve that.

Croquet Club News Ramsgate Croquet Club continues to be a hive of activity. With at least one important tournament due to be held every month this summer, members and those involved in the playing of the tournaments are buzzing. Spectators are always welcome at the lawns, situated at the Royal Esplanade (CT11 0EY) on Ramsgate’s West Cliff, near the bowls club and the boating pool. Tournaments start at 9.30am on each day. In addition, over 20 groups will be experiencing croquet taster sessions over the course of the summer, and this year the U3A will be playing on four Wednesday afternoons. Sarah Gough Interview How long have you lived in Ramsgate? I have lived in Ramsgate my whole life. As have my parents. Why did you start helping the local community? Our son Alfie was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2009 and in 2010 things took a turn for the worse and a campaign began in Thanet to help raise money for Alfie for treatment in America. We lost Alfie in July 2010, but the support from our local community was overwhelming and we decided that we wanted to give something back to such a wonderful community. What are your earliest memories of Ramsgate? As a child we spent a lot of time down at Ramsgate beach and Pleasurama and Ellington Park. I always remember the little steam train which used to be in the park and the Phoenix fair, which used to come there once a year. What are your ambitions? To continue to work with others to make Ramsgate a wonderful place for our children to grow up in. As the years have gone by, unfortunately, parts of my childhood have disappeared and things have changed, not for the better. It would be nice to see Ramsgate back as the sunny seaside town it was years ago.

32

What are you currently working on or towards in Ramsgate? Our annual teddy bears’ picnic is what we are currently working on. This will be our fifth year and the event has grown from strength to strength. We pride ourselves on this being a community event and giving something back for all the support shown to Alfie. Although this is a fundraising event for the charity, we also try to do a lot of free activities for families to enjoy and make good use of the King George VI Park for a day of fun. Why did you start this current project? Our first-ever teddy bears’ picnic was held on July 7th, 2010, to raise money for Alfie’s treatment. We had a refreshment tent selling cupcakes and soft drinks, along with face painting and story time with a giant teddy bear. Now, in 2014, we have over 20 stalls for children, bouncy castles, pony rides, an inflatable football pitch and all-day free entertainment ranging from a majorettes display to Peppa Pig. Where did you get the idea from to start this? In July 2010 we did many fundraising events to help raise money for Alfie’s treatment. This was just one of many ideas. The teddy bears’ picnic is the only event Alfie ever attended and this is why we chose to continue this event, year after year in his memory.

teddy bears ready to watch the Kent Kite Fliers parachute the bear from the sky. It’s really a unique and special day. We are always delighted to see so many happy faces and it’s just nice to see the park full of people all relaxing on the grass enjoying the entertainment. Where do you see yourself helping the community in a year’s time? We hope Alfie’s spirit and memory will continue to live on in our community, along with our teddy bears’ picnic.
