The Cinnamon Trust is the only specialist national charity for the terminally ill and people in their later years and their much loved, much needed companion animals. We urgently need dog walking volunteers in Ramsgate who are able to offer some much needed walks for a lovely eight-yearold Jack Russell cross. What happens if illness, injury or just the fact that we all get older eventually affects our ability to look after our four-legged companions? A large number of elderly or ill pet owners become very worried about their ability to care for their pets, and feel that their only option is to rehome them. This is where our national network of dedicated volunteers step in to offer support enabling them to stay together. We’ll walk the dog for a housebound owner, we’ll foster pets when owners need hospital care, we’ll fetch the cat food, even clean out the bird cage or litter trays. We are always seeking new volunteers. Even if you can only spare an hour a week, we would love to hear from you.

The Micro Museum Open again at Easter Encouraged by the positive comments from everyone who came to the Micro Museum in our first year, we spent the winter months working to improve our visitors’ experience in 2015. The museum re-opens at Easter this year with • New displays and additional exhibits from our collection • New history information boards, giving more facts about how computing started and developed - all the way from the first use of the “0” (essential in binary) to the year 2000. • A new quiz • Additional classic games to play. And for the summer (July-September), we’ll have an exhibition of vintage cameras from our collection.
helped advertise the Micro Museum. Also a big “thank you” is due to the Ramsgate shop owners and businesses who displayed our posters and to the many people who came along to support us in our venture. We are proud to be running Kent’s only museum of vintage home computers, games and micro electronics in Ramsgate, doing our bit to add to the attractions provided by this great town for the local people and visitors alike. Volunteers Needed We created the museum as a place to share our enthusiasm for vintage computing and we are looking for volunteers to help us during this year. If you have experience, knowledge or just a real interest in computing history and would like to join us in welcoming and showing our visitors around the museum, please get in touch. For our new season, we’ll be open 1-4pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Bank Holiday Mondays. We’ll also be open on Thursdays during the month of August.

Ramsgate Neighbourhood Plan Our Neighbourhood Plan is led by the town council. It is supported by an organising group of volunteers. After residents gave their ideas in the open space sessions last year, work continued behind the scenes. The geographic area is now approved. It covers all of Ramsgate. And the Neighbourhood Plan is now grouped into four areas 1 The built environment 2 The natural environment 3 The economy 4 Wellbeing (including leisure, sport and culture) There are a lot of different groups and plans to make Ramsgate a place we are all proud to live, work and visit, such as Ramsgate Town Plan, Ramsgate Port Plan, etc. So come to these meetings and help us create links between groups and action plans to make things happen! · 6-9pm Thursday 12 February Custom House, Ramsgate · 6-9pm Thursday 12 March Chatham House School Hall TBC · 6-9pm Thursday 9 April Newington Community Centre TBC

Active Ramsgate The regeneration initiative Active Ramsgate, delivered by Ramsgate Town Council and Explore Kent, has just enjoyed a hugely successful 2014 in terms of benefits to the local economy. The initiative is designed to support economic regeneration by promoting the area through its outdoor activities, such as walking, cycling, canoeing and geocaching trails. Its first year (2013/14) brought an additional £160,000 into the town, and indications are that 2014/15 is on course to beat those targets. Recent months have seen three hugely successful Sky Rides take place along the Viking Coastal Trail, increasing the numbers of cyclists visiting the area, as well as the development of a canoe trail starting from Ramsgate’s Western Undercliff.
Three guided walks have been developed along the Thanet coastline to make the stunning views and various attractions as accessible as possible, and online guides are available to download from the Active Ramsgate website. Local meteorologist and outdoor enthusiast Kaddy Lee-Preston has also been appoint as the face of the campaign, participating in various events such as Ramsgate’s Summer Squall and the Festival of the Sea, and promoting the initiative to local residents and visitors alike. As a result local tourism businesses, such as hotels and restaurants, are reporting a surge in visitors to the area, significantly boosting their income, and allowing for continuing development in areas such as the harbour and waterfront.

A public meeting is to be held at 11.30 am on Saturday, February 14, at the Custom House, Harbour Parade, in Ramsgate, to resolve the situation with the Eastcliff Residents’ Association (ERA). ERA has not been active for a number of years, but has remaining funds of £6,431. In accordance with the ERA constitution it is proposed that ERA be wound up and that those funds ( after payment of the wind-up costs of around £200) be transferred to : • Friends of Ramsgate Seafront (FORS) £5,231 (plus any remaining funds left out of the £200 provision) • Ramsgate Arts £1,000 • In both cases the funds are to be used for the benefit of residents of the Eastcliff. • The allocation of funds is as recommended by Councillors Dave Green, Liz Green and Rick Everitt. Any former ERA member may speak and vote at the meeting.

Shopping in Ramsgate Over the last year or so Ramsgate has had a growing number of shops opening up, in the town centre and down on the harbour. Addington Street is coming back to life and there’s now a real reason for people to come and explore and buy. To succeed, we need our town to attract new visitors from Deal, Sandwich and even Canterbury to explore the unusual and independent shops and bring new prosperity. Next time you have a couple of hours free, take a tour around and have a look at these newer Ramsgate shops, but don’t ignore the others all around them. You’ll find a rich mix of grocery, homewares, haberdashery and ironmongery.

Mayor’s charities As Mayor of Ramsgate, I am in a position to try to raise money for charities in our town. This year I thought I would raise money for Newington Community Youth Project, to raise money to keep the youth club going, because the Newington area (my ward on the town council) needs all the help it can get. The centre manager, Marie, tells me that there will be an end to funding for the youth club, so I have put in money from my councillor ward fund and, with what we can raise from the mayor’s fund, we will try to keep it going for another year. Then we will start fundraising again! I have chosen one more recipient as it is better to keep it to a few where money raised will be able to help, rather than share it thinly among so many other worthwhile charities, who may be helped by the next mayor. This is for Ramsgate Olympic Taekwondo Club at the Ramsgate Sports Centre, open Saturdays 12.30- 1.30pm and 1.30-3pm for older students.

This club was started over eight years ago by Leszek Grela, who is passionate about Taekwondo, our children and youth. When Leszek started this club it was free of charge and all equipment was paid for out of his own pocket. He applied to the Ramsgate Fund (now administered by RTC) for money for jackets with Ramsgate in large letters. Since then his only support has been from the Ramsgate Fund, all other monies are paid by himself. I bought my grandson his own helmet and chest protector and this cost £58. He has outgrown it and has since donated it to the club. Children as young as four years old are members, as long as they can take instruction they are welcome. It teaches children discipline and teamwork, exercise and keep fit and a competitive spirit. They have won many medals over the years and have become well known on the Taekwondo circuit. They need to be supported.
Bears and beyond I was recently invited to go to the Dame Janet Academy, where I presented a cheque to the manager of Wildwood Animal Centre to help provide for two rescued bears from Bulgaria. The children had raised over £78 for the rescued bears. I gave out certificates to the “Beavers in Thanet”, accompanied by my toy bear, Scout, who was given to me by Ann Wells MBE, complete with camp blanket. It is always a pleasure to help the scouting fraternity, a group of committed and dedicated people I have the greatest admiration for. We were told about the bears’ love of peanut butter and honey. They are in quarantine until February, after which they will then go into an enclosure to be seen by the public. I then went back in the afternoon to see a really good “Save the Rainforest” show, a song and dance by the children to make people aware of what happens to animals and birds when they lose their homes in the forest. There was a sale of bags painted by the children, friendship bracelets and many leaflets about the rainforest that they had made themselves. I bought a bag, filled with leaflets given by the children, and each child did a painting, which was then auctioned off. I bought a painting and proposed to put it on display in the Custom House, as I was so impressed with their commitment to this project. So many parents were able to come to both displays. This again is very encouraging, as the children are our future.

Mayor of Ramsgate As Mayor of Ramsgate, a position I regard as a privilege and an honour, I would like to tell you of what I have achieved so far during my term of office. I have met many people who give time and effort into making our town a better place to live. I have instigated a Mayor’s Award certificate. This is for anyone who has helped Ramsgate communities and received no reward. I would also like to invite people into the mayor’s parlour for tea or coffee and cake, to show off the wonderful collection of silver and pictures that depict the history of Ramsgate. This is also open to schools. I have visited some schools (whoever wants me will get a visit!) and have been very impressed by the projects carried out and the confidence and questions of these future citizens, and by the help and dedication of the teachers. During the summer Ramsgate was visited by young people from our Twinned Town of Conflans-St Honorine, in France. There were so many they would not have fitted in the council chamber, so I met them outside on the harbour. They were very interested in the mayor’s chain and its history. Another group of younger children came later, again they

were shown our mayor’s chain and the mace and appeared very interested in our history. Another group of older young people from a school in Conflans came and were met on the beach by a group from Hereson and Ellington School where they had a picnic. This is where twinning comes in useful! On Christmas Eve, myself and my deputy Cllr Dwyer-King delivered a tin of chocolates to the staff at the Thanet District Council office in York Street, as a thank-you for their help to residents through the year. Later that day I delivered a box of biscuits to the police office, again as a thank-you. On Christmas Day the Mayoress and I paid a visit to a care home, spoke to the residents, then went on to the fire station with biscuits, hoping for a cuppa and a chat. They were not in! We then visited the ambulance station, again with biscuits, where we did get a coffee and a piece of delicious cake. Then on to St Christopher’s Church in Newington, where a free Christmas dinner had been arranged for local people. We spoke to the helpers and had a photo taken. I am trying to be involved in the Dynamo

Our history shows we will never be down for long, the only way is up, and we shall reach the top of any tree we aspire to climb. Day presentations. This is very important to Ramsgate as we were one of the ports into which the Little Ships came. In fact, we have in the harbour our very own ship, the Sundowner, which went to Dunkirk and brought back 130 men. The man who went out with his ship was Charles Lightoller, last surviving officer of the Titanic! My father-in-law was brought off the beaches at Dunkirk to Ramsgate, where they were given tea and a sandwich, and put on a train to an army base. This is all good advertising for Ramsgate. I hope we can all show up at various celebrations to make this a day to remember, as it may not happen again. As mayor I have been to many events to represent you. I have enjoyed every minute, even in freezing cold churches, sometimes three events a day. It’s what you do when you take on the position of mayor - fly the flag for Ramsgate! I have given history lessons to anyone who asks, I only stop when their eyes glaze over and they lose the will to live! Ramsgate is unique, we should all be very proud of what we have here and what we have achieved after losing employment on the Sally Line and Transeuropa.

Operation Dynamo 75 years on Operation Dynamo’s 75th Anniversary will extend from May 20-25 in Margate and Ramsgate in Kent. Prior to the anniversary, the 1939/40 Dunkirk exhibition will be opening in Ramsgate Tunnels, hopefully by the end of February. In the afternoon (approx 2.30pm) there will be a VIP inspection of over 50 Dunkirk Little Ships in the harbour, hopefully accompanied by a display from a number of Spitfires and a couple of Hurricanes. On Thursday 21 May at approximately 8am (depending on the tide) the Little Ships will leave Ramsgate Royal Harbour and sail to Dunkirk. They will be piped out by a local piper and accompanied by the Royal Navy and RNLI. On Monday 25 May at about 4pm (TBC), a smaller number of Little Ships will

It was agreed that a new website would be created to benefit the community, but also to keep the residents and public aware of the work by Ramsgate Town Council. In March 2013, www.ramsgatetown.org was launched. It started as a news, events and town council website and has grown into so much more over the years. Many improvements and changes have been made to the website, such as a homepage redesign and an added business directory. That month also saw the launch of the Ramsgate Town Facebook (www.facebook. com/RamsgateTown) and Twitter (www. twitter.com/RamsgateTown) pages. Please feel free to like and follow these to keep up-to-date with the latest news, events, announcements, new businesses etc. The year 2014 saw the introduction of many new items for the website such as: competitions, history, interviews and online publications. The website continues to be expanded and developed beyond the original expectation. With the second year anniversary of its launch approaching, Ramsgate Town Council would like to thank all visitors to the website, all the people who like and follow us on Facebook and Twitter for the continued support and feedback that we have received. In the space of two years, the Ramsgate Town Website has received over 500,000 visits from over 150,000 visitors. We look forward in future to interacting more with businesses to help promote them and to encourage them to advertise on the website, and also look to do even more to promote local events. Thank you for your continued support of the Ramsgate Town website.

Croquet Club Although the official playing season at Ramsgate Croquet Club has come to an end, various improvements are now under way at club headquarters and planning for next year continues during the winter break. Currently, the maintenance team, led by Trevor Longman, are busy working on the lawns. And a team of Friday workers meet each week to press ahead with redecorating the interior of the club house. Trevor has also been involved in setting up the main Croquet Association tournaments for the 2015 season, and as a bonus has managed to secure the services of wellknown croquet personality Cliff Jones. Cliff will be running the Open Golf Croquet Tournament in June, after which he has agreed to stay on for a few days to provide expert coaching for RCC members. Thinking some more of summer days ahead, Roger Loram is busy polishing up the newly-acquired barbecue for those alfresco meals. Staying on the social side, plans are also underway for quizzes and croquet fun days. The ever-popular public open day, when everyone is invited to try the game in a nottoo-serious atmosphere, is scheduled to take place once again on the Spring Bank Holiday Monday, May 25. And with other evening events planned, and visits from local organisations such as the U3A in prospect, it promises to be an interesting 2015. If you are interested in finding out more about Ramsgate Croquet Club, spectators are always welcome at the lawns on the seaward side of Royal Esplanade on the West Cliff. Alternatively, the membership secretary on 01843 604934 will be happy to supply you with any further information.

Interview
Leszek Grela
How long have you lived in Ramsgate? Nearly 10 years, moved down in 2005. Why did you start helping the local community? I was always interested in sport, previously as a professional fighter, later I became a Taekwondo coach. I greatly enjoy getting involved in the local community and knowing that I have made a difference. What are your earliest memories of Ramsgate? The sea and the lovely fish and chips from Pete’s fish and chip shop at the Ramsgate Harbour. What are your ambitions? There is not anything I would like more than to see one of my students compete at the Olympic Games.

What are you currently working on or towards in Ramsgate? I voluntarily run an Olympic Taekwondo sports club in Ramsgate. Why did you start this current project? I love sport, especially Taekwondo, and enjoy working with children so I put two and two together and now I can proudly say that I run a successful sport club. Where did you get the idea to start this? I ran a successful Taekwondo club in Poland, so after I moved to Ramsgate I wanted to do it again. What can Ramsgate look forward to from you in the future? I am sure we, as a club, will represent Ramsgate at national and international arenas during Taekwondo competitions. How do you feel your contribution has helped or made a difference to Ramsgate? I can see the positive impact sport has for young people, especially mentally with self-confidence and self-discipline. Many of our children have various physical disabilities and I like to think that sport has helped them with not only their coordination and core body strength, but also their confidence and attitudes. Where do you see yourself helping the community in a years time? I see myself running sport sessions for young people from difficult backgrounds. I would like to make a difference.

The Petticoat Emporium A brand new business on Dumpton Park Drive, opening on Valentine’s Day Ruth Tozer, her husband Richard and their friend Kevin are the people behind this new business in Ramsgate. Richard has been restoring and dealing in furniture since 1979. He has worked in Harrods antique furniture department, where he was lucky enough to meet some interesting and amazing people. He has been a self-employed furniture restorer for 27 years, which is how he met Ruth, who has been working alongside him restoring furniture for the past 15 years. “We met our friend Kevin 14 years ago; we share a passion for motorbikes and bike rallies and have often thought about starting a joint venture. This seemed like a perfect project for us to sink our teeth into. Kevin has mostly been involved in the construction industry and owns several businesses - he supplies and restores pool tables and juke boxes for hotels, pubs and clubs.” After years of trading and restoring furniture across the south of England, Richard and Ruth became involved in furniture emporiums in Dorset, which inspired the idea for an emporium in Kent. “We chose Ramsgate because of the beautiful harbour, architecture, up-andcoming growth, population density and the creative people we have met on our journey. The warehouse we have chosen in Dumpton Park Drive caught our eye because of its attractive Edwardian facade.” The aim is to create an emporium full of vibrant, colourful, interesting vintage goods to attract people throughout the whole of the South East. There are lots of pitches to rent at an affordable price, so it is also a great resource for sellers to get their products on sale www.petticoatemporium.com

Interview
Phil Spain
How long have you lived in Ramsgate? Apart from 18 months, elsewhere in Kent, I’ve lived and worked in Ramsgate all my life. Why did you start helping the local community? I’ve always been very fond of Ramsgate and have endeavoured to help out where I can. In 2011, I was asked to join the group trying to reopen the Ramsgate Tunnels and thought it would be a good opportunity to do something positive for the town. What are your earliest memories of Ramsgate? Childhood memories of the Western Undercliff and of course the fantastic Merrie England amusement park and seafront lights. As a young boy, growing up in Ramsgate was fascinating. With thousands of visitors, a working harbour and military airfield nearby, there was always something of interest to see or get involved in.
30
What are your ambitions? I’ve already achieved many of my ambitions, but I still have the urge to travel and do a few more unusual things. What are you currently working on or towards in Ramsgate? I’m still involved with the Ramsgate Tunnels and I’m also working on a project to bring motorcycle sprinting back to the Western Undercliff. Why did you start this current project? I have very fond memories of the motorcycle sprints in the 1950s and 60s. I used to compete in motorcycle racing and when the opportunity arose I thought it would be a good idea to combine my passions for Ramsgate and motorbikes. Where did you get the idea from to start this? The idea wasn’t mine. An enthusiast who had dreamt of bringing the sprint back to Ramsgate for many years approached me. What can Ramsgate look forward to from you in the future? I really don’t know. I’m of an age where I can please myself, but if something catches my imagination who knows what might happen. How do you feel your contribution has helped or made a difference to Ramsgate? I suppose the most obvious contribution would be helping with getting the Ramsgate Tunnels open. They’re already a tremendous success and have a very promising future. Where do you see yourself helping the community in a year’s time? I will probably still be contributing to the Tunnels and with any luck I will be preparing for a bigger and better Ramsgate Sprint Revival for 2016.

There is no doom and Last year Kent County Council introduced a policy called a ‘Sensible street lighting Policy for Kent’; almost everyone ignored it, except Ramsgate Town Council, who produced a report which reviewed the standard of street lighting in the town. What we found was that the town’s street lighting needed urgent attention, with abandoned lamp standards, poor lighting and a multiplicity of designs, many of them old fashioned and obsolete.
In the conservation areas a new standard lantern type conservation lamp will replace all existing types over time, again
That report formed the basis of an understanding that should drive local policy for at least the next 10 years, hopefully beyond the current round of austerity cuts. It was not possible to dissuade KCC from their switch off/remove lighting policy that they have followed in the last year, which Ramsgate Town Council thinks is counterproductive and damaging to community wellbeing, but what Ramsgate Town Council did achieve was a rational plan for the future. It comes in two parts: one plan for the conservation areas in the town, but more importantly for the rest of the town. The town will receive one standard design of modern LED lighting, capable of being dimmed centrally and reducing the need

producing more efficient lighting in a standard format. At the moment there are over 16 different types of standard lamp within Ramsgate. In future there will be just two, which will look and work a lot better than the mixture we have at present. Most lamps will remain unpainted, but in the conservation areas black will replace blue, which does not wear well and costs more to repaint. This new policy is already at work in Ramsgate’s High Street where new lighting has been installed to transform the

lighting on the lower part of the street. We hope this type of investment will be taken up elsewhere instead of the current switch off policy, which only delays necessary investment, with greater expense later. It has been put about in some quarters that there is no discernible effect on crime by turning off street lighting completely or after midnight. There is no evidence to support this view as the studies that are quoted don’t suggest that street lighting is not effective - merely that the irrefutable proof for this theory isn’t available. Ramsgate Town Council upholds that until there is incontrovertible proof to the contrary, good street lighting is a necessity in any well-ordered community it will continue to press for good street lighting.
The High Street before improvement
Much of this activity was the result of a Ramsgate Town Council meeting and walkabout in Ramsgate with KCC Street Lighting and Highways, forging an agreement to standardise and upgrade the town’s street lighting in future. Ramsgate Town Council is pressing the case for a definitive schedule of works. All this positive news does not mean that Ramsgate Town Council will cease in continuing to urge KCC to adopt a more positive investment policy of replacing outmoded lighting with new more energy efficient equipment, but it does show that a town council can and does have something useful to say on behalf of its community and that evidence based policy is the way forward in the future.

I enjoyed reading the Community Magazine. I am writing to ask if we are going to have a new lift at the East Cliff taking us down to the beach, as I am elderly and have difficulty with the hills, I found it a great help being able to use it. I understand it could not be repaired last summer because it was so old. P. Paramor, Ramsgate

The Invaders
Ramsgate is attacked from the air
On the night of the 17th May 1915, Zeppelin LZ38, commanded by Capt Erich Linnarz flew over Margate en route to Ramsgate. At 01.40hrs 20 bombs (mostly incendiaries) were dropped on Ramsgate. The Bull and George Hotel in Ramsgate High Street was struck and heavily damaged, with shop fronts damaged nearby. Two people were killed and one was injured. This was the first time that Ramsgate received an air raid, it was not unfortunately to be the last one. LZ38 received considerable rifle fire and retreated overland to Dover, where she

was caught in the Dover search light defences (the first time a zeppelin had been so illuminated). LZ38 became a target for the Dover anti aircraft guns and she dumped her remaining bomb load and beat a retreat to her base in Belgium. She was chased by an Avro biplane armed with two grenades and a couple of incendiary bombs, but the Zeppelin having lost weight gained sufficient height for the interception to become impossible. LZ38 was the first of the new enlarged P class airships with improved aerodynamics and greater size (1.126m/3feet). At 536ft long and 61ft in diameter these were enormous machines. They consisted of a framework made of an aluminium alloy enclosing balloons or gas cells made of what in fact were sausage skins backed on to cotton. The skins known as gold beaters skins were almost impermeable to the hydrogen lifting gas they contained. It took over 250,000 cattle to make enough skins to fit out a Zeppelin. What is not often known is that this was originally a British secret that had somehow been
stolen under an act of industrial espionage. The framework was covered by doped canvas or very heavy cotton, which was fragile and needed constant attention. She was powered by 4 x 210hp Maybach engines (one in front and three at the rear). Her maximum ceiling was 11,000 ft, which was at the time considerably higher than that of any British interceptor aircraft. With a bomb load of over 2 tonnes she had the potential to inflict considerable damage. LZ38 later went on to be the first Zeppelin to attack London at the end of May 1915. She was destroyed in her shed in Belgium a few days later on 7th June 1915, when a Royal Naval Air Service Farman bomber attacked her in her lair. From now on in this war and the next, civilians would be in the front line as they still are in Syria and Iraq. There is a direct line from this small but deadly attack to the cataclysms of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The raid made the front page of the national newspapers, though some of the details were a bit off-key.

On December 31, 2013, Dean Williams shaved his head to start growing his hair and a beard for the whole of 2014 for charity. He chose to raise £2,000 for two charities in Ramsgate – Project Motorhouse and The Alfie Gough Trust. As well as Dean’s sponsorship for growing his hair, he has attended many dog agility shows that he competes in, at which the organisers of the shows have gone out of their way to help achieve his goal. With fun competitions during the evenings at UKA Quadpaws, he managed to raise £275.80, with additional help from the caterers Potato Crazy.
BEFORE
Dean has also organised other events to help him reach his target such as; • A walk with dog owners and their dogs from Minnis Bay to Reculver in June • A sponsored run between Ramsgate and Broadstairs bandstand in July • A sponsored 160ft bungee jump at the O2 Arena in September • A raffle by Make It Fun Dog Agility Club in December • As well as the final haircut and shave on December 31 2014.
