Ramsgate Croquet Club The long awaited official opening of the lawns, heralding the new season, took place on Saturday, April 18. As ever, this took the form of the President’s Day tournament, and was organised by Andy Mitchell, a life member of the club. Players on the day take part in a four ball match, in which groups of four play as individuals, with the aim of scoring as many points as possible on their own account. Newly elected president, Wendy Austen, presented the trophy to the winner. The club has a very busy calendar this season, beginning with the annual Open Day on Monday, May 25. Last year, Bank Holiday Monday proved to be the ideal day for the club to open its lawns to give members of the public a chance to pick up a mallet and
“have a go”. It is an afternoon event, running from 1-5pm, and all that is needed are flatsoled shoes and clothing appropriate to the weather conditions of the day. Over the weekend of May 8-10, six of our members will travel with the Ramsgate Twinning Association to our twin town of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, as part of celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the twinning. Home tournaments so far scheduled are as follows:Weekend of May 30/31 Ladies Open Golf Croquet Singles. This sees the return of the ever-popular Evelyn Martin from Shackerstone, Leicestershire, as the tournament manager. Wednesday-Friday June 10-12 The club will host coaching courses in both forms of the game: association croquet and golf croquet. Cliff Jones, the internationally well-known player, and coach for over 20 years, will be at Ramsgate to conduct these sessions. Weekend of June 13/14 The Croquet Association’s Open Golf Competition will be held. This is a very popular and highly competitive event with participants coming from as far away as Australia, and an opportunity to see golf croquet being played by some of the best players in the world.
8
Weekend of July 4/5 Ramsgate Croquet Club will host another Croquet Association tournament. This time it will be an association croquet singles tournament managed by Ramsgate Croquet Club’s vice-chairman, Roger Loram. Sunday July 19 The Kent Cup returns to Ramsgate Croquet Club. Entries for this golf croquet tournament are restricted to Kent-based players, but we expect to welcome people from all parts of the county. Manager/organiser for this event is Trevor Longman. Ramsgate Croquet Club has an active junior section, which has in the past decade produced players who have gone on to achieve international status: David Dray, James Goodbun and Tobi Savage. Most recently, Tobi competed in the World Championship (golf croquet) in New Zealand at the end of 2014. Ramsgate Croquet Club continues to be a popular venue for many local groups keen to try the game. Sessions are offered on summer evenings, which, together with the opportunity to sample the club’s refreshments, makes for a very sociable time. Among the groups returning this year will be the U3A (University of the 3rd Age), whose members take part in four afternoons of taster sessions, organised by Rodney Sutherland. Afternoon coaching sessions for club members are available in both disciplines of the game. Wednesday afternoons will be devoted to association croquet coaching, while on Thursdays the golf coaching will be led by Tony Mockett. The lawns of Ramsgate Croquet Club are located just beyond Government Acre on the West Cliff. As always, spectators are very welcome. For more information please contact the club’s membership secretary on 01843 604934, or visit the club website at www.croquetramsgate.co.uk/events.htm

at The Micro Museum We are looking forward to our summer exhibition which starts on Friday, July 3. We have given it the title “Smile” and we will be showing a selection from our collection of vintage cameras from the 1930s all the way to digital. December this year will see the 40th anniversary of the invention of the electronic camera, so it’s a good time to look back at the development of photographic equipment. After talking to Ramsgate’s Royal Harbour Photographic Group, we are delighted to share the news that the group will be providing a selection of their photographs for our reception area during the Smile exhibition. We have given them an open brief and encouraged them to be
imaginative, so we are expecting it to be an exciting and interesting display. It is great to have the involvement of a local group of such talented people. Along with our new and bigger displays of exhibits and the expanded historical information on many additional aspects of computing, visitors are finding lots more to discover this year. Throughout the 2015 season (AprilSeptember) we hope that everyone who comes to the Micro Museum will want to Smile. The Alfie Gough Memorial Run The Alfie Gough Memorial run is set for 7pm on Wednesday 29 July 2015 and we invite all to participate or just to come along to the park to cheer on the runners. Stalls and refreshment bar available and live music, the event will be great way to spend a summers evening. With a choice of 10K, 5K and a children’s run there is something for all ages to enjoy and everyone is welcome to come and cheer on the runners and enjoy the refreshments and free entertainment at the King George VI Park in Ramsgate.
forward to this event. Their family friends and band of supporters will make this an evening to remember. There are lots of places to eat and drink locally making this event attractive to all comers.” Charles White, Trustee and Head of Fundraising
With the entry, each runner will receive a Medal and finish line Goodie bag. Usual logistics are all taken care of with refreshment and secure bag storage. There will also be winner’s prizes for various running categories awarded on the evening.
This year is an exciting year for the Alfie Gough Trust as they introduce this new event to Thanet in addition to the now well established Teddy Bears Picnic. The Teddy Bears Picnic attracts well over 1000 people who come and enjoy a family day in the park.
The Alfie Gough Memorial 10k and 5k Run is a brand new and exciting evening event for Kent to commemorate the life of Alfie Gough and help raise funds for The Alfie Gough Trust. Alfie passed away on 29 July 2010 after being diagnosed with Neuroblastoma. The trust aims to help and support other families. This has been a vision of Charles White Trustee and Head of fundraising of the Alfie Gough Trust to get this annual event in the calendar and off the ground. “Charlie” has been a keen marathon runner since 2007; he has completed 12 marathons, 3 Triathlons and numerous other races. With the support of organisers, Nice Work, the event is available for entry now and can be found on the popular Runners World website www.runnersworld.co.uk that will attract keen runners from across the UK to come and enjoy an evening run on the Thanet coastline. “I am so happy this event is now on the calendar having been in discussion for a couple of years. Ramsgate/Thanet is a great place to run, its sea air will fill your lungs and at the finish you should be bursting with pride that you’ve helped this brilliant charity. Sarah and Dean, Alfie’s parents, are so looking
14
“Now in our 4th year as an established registered charity in Kent we are embarking on one more exciting project and funding complementary therapy for the next 3 years at Great Ormond Street Hospital. The trust will fund and support Jenni Hallman, Complementary Therapy Nurse Specialist (previously Alfie’s Nurse), over the next three years at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Spending time in hospital can be a frightening experience. Meeting a stream of different health professionals, coping with high-tech machinery and undergoing treatment is often daunting, let alone getting to grips with the illness itself. Whilst many charities focus on the fantastic investments for a future cure our objective is to help reduce some of the severe sideeffects of the Chemotherapy and ultimately keep children stronger throughout their treatment, giving them the strength needed to help fight disease. Not only improving quality of life, but also contributing to saving lives.” Sarah Gough, Founder

Interview
Gerry Short How long have you lived in Ramsgate? I initially moved here in 1947 when I was 4 years old and left in 1970 for work. I returned to live in Ramsgate full time 11 years ago.
Where did you get the idea from to start this? From a leaflet my wife brought home from the Visitor Information Centre.
Why did you start helping the local community? I like wildlife and it is on our doorstep.
What can Ramsgate look forward to from you in the future? To remain positive that Ramsgate has a future and that the efforts of the Montefiore Garden Project grow from strength to strength.
What are your earliest memories of Ramsgate? The vibrant seafront, the Royal Harbour, Merry England, The Pavilion and the Granville. What are your ambitions? To see Montefiore Garden Project flourish. What are you currently working on or towards in Ramsgate? Maintaining Montefiore Garden Project and being Chairperson of Ramsgate Bowls Club. Why did you start this current project? To ensure we leave a natural woodland to the people of Ramsgate and to witness the flourish of its wildlife.
How do you feel your contribution has helped or made a difference to Ramsgate? By being positive, enthusiastic and dedicated, hoping my actions will influence others to help. Where do you see yourself helping the community in a years time? Encouraging more younger people to take up the game of bowls. Showing the people of Ramsgate how much wildlife is present on our doorstep and how to care and support it.

In Newington, we commenced the seven steps of our Big Local Pathway in January 2013, with support from our Big Local Representative. Since August 2013, we have benefited from the additional support of our part-time community development worker. During this exciting phase of our development we have achieved the first three steps, and this plan successfully completes step four. In getting to this stage, we have engaged extensively with local residents, alongside statutory and voluntary partners and local councillors. We are particularly pleased with the following: • The inclusion of young people on our partnership • The tangible and demonstrable growth of skills and confidence of local residents • Our relationship with our local GP as our Local Trusted Organisation • The active involvement of local schools • The overwhelming support of local residents at our events and consultation activities
We have a vibrant and dynamic partnership, including the active involvement of four young people. We have organised a number of local events and activities to encourage a broad range of residents to engage with us; learning about Big Local and giving them opportunities to be involved. For example: • Two Big Lunches • A Big Local BBQ • A Newington music event
• The reclamation of ‘The Copse’ and the accompanying community involvement it has engendered
• Our Big Local launch
• Our approach to community mapping, using the Community 21 online tool
• An Easter event with egg hunts, games and activities
• The successful creation of the Conyngham Close play area
RamsgateTownCouncil Magazine
Newington Big Local
• Halloween activity • A Victorian Christmas party
Our events have all focused on having “fun” while gaining the trust of residents to allow them to openly and honestly feed back to us the realities and perceptions of living in Newington. Throughout this period we have recognised the importance of effective partnership working, with residents as well as with other local stakeholders and providers. For example, SkillForce have been working with us to focus their input with challenging children and young people in those areas where residents know there are particular difficulties - providing services in the community. We are working closely with the Diocese of Canterbury, ensuring that services target the needs of the most vulnerable. We are also building our working arrangements with Pfizer, who have been providing design and advice around a new computer suite for Newington.

Ramsgate Beach Oh! I have sand between my toes! I walk warm and joyful in the sun, With the sea breeze in my face, Wiggling them, I breathe in the delight Of having sand between my toes.
Bringing the Sea Back home A little boy having taken his small, plastic, Brightly coloured watering can to fill it up, Yellow on the top vibrant light blue beneath, Flashing in the sunshine, Stops on the way back up the beach to his parents, To water the sand. A small container containing the momentous sea.
Oh, the joy of having sand between my toes! To see the sea, the sea and people darting in and out, The timeless element of children playing in the sand. The roll of the waves, and the sound of them touching the shore, The smell of the sea salt going zinging up my nose, And the joy, the utter joy of having sand between my toes.

Poems
Delighted adults picking up stones and shells on the shoreline Timidly at first, carefully, gingerly getting their feet slowly, painfully Wet and then, at last, having been acclimatised, Not caring, and comfortable. Above all, the soft breeze and sunshine raining down on all, And the bliss of sitting on the beach, being completely still. I don’t need Las Vegas, and don’t want Ibiza, All I want is Ramsgate beach in the sunshine. The mixed sound of the seagulls, waves and children Screeching from the cold of the sea. Oh for the joy of the simple things in life for me, Heart’s ease on the sand.

Ramsgate Bowls Club
Ramsgate Seaside Fair comes to Government Acre for the first time on July 4/5 from 10am-6pm.
We would welcome anyone to come and see our matches over the summer season or just pop in and see us. Why not make this the year to try bowls for yourself?
This two-day seaside celebration is set to be an annual event in the Ramsgate calendar. With no entry fee, easy parking, and something for all the family, the weekend promises to be full of fun. Expect toy and craft trade stands, “kitchenalia”, children’s entertainment, food and drink stalls – and of course a beer tent. The weekend is being organised as a joint venture with the Ramsgate Town Team who will be putting their energies into drumming up a jolly band of volunteers. If you would like to get involved contact Ramsgate Town Team - just a few donated hours makes all the difference!
Anyone is welcome to come and try our four free taster seasons, coaching, shoes and woods available. We have all levels of skill and new members would easily fit in. To help you gain experience, we have regular friendly roll-ups for you to join in. Bowlers and spectators alike have a great time in the sunshine. Look forward to seeing you.

Operation Dynamo remembered Operation Dynamo’s 75th anniversary events will extend from May 20-25. Prior to the anniversary, the 1939/40 Dunkirk exhibition will be opening in Ramsgate Tunnels. On Wednesday, May 20, at 11.30am, there will be a church service in a marquee on the Royal Harbour followed at 12.30pm by a parade to commemorate the evacuation of Dunkirk. In the afternoon (approximately 2.30pm) there will be a VIP inspection of over 50 Dunkirk Little Ships in the harbour, hopefully accompanied by a display from a number of Spitfires and a couple of Hurricanes. On Thursday, May 21, at approximately 8am (depending on the tide) the Little Ships will leave Ramsgate Royal Harbour and sail to Dunkirk. They will be piped out by a local piper and accompanied by the Royal Navy and RNLI. On Monday, May 25, (time to be confirmed, but about 4pm), a smaller number

of Little Ships will return to Ramsgate Royal Harbour and be welcomed by lots of people waving and cheering. From 11am to 5pm on May 23-25, Ramsgate Royal Harbour will be transformed into May 1940. There will be tea dances every day at 12 o’clock, 2pm and 4pm with great dancers and some great music (tickets now available online at www.operationdynamo75th.co.uk). From Friday to Sunday, May 22-24 (7-10.30pm), there will be outdoor big band concerts based on the music of the 1940s taking place on Government Acre. Tickets will be extremely limited and are now on sale (£10 in advance, £15 on the gate). In Margate, the Theatre Royal is hosting a 1940s production called Spitfire Solo on Wednesday, May 20. The Winter Gardens will be having an ENSA Production on Sunday, May 24. Any enquires please phone event organiser Angie Sutton on 01843 230779

We had our selection for a new Miss Ramsgate and court on Saturday, March 14. This took place at the Elms Social Club, Elms Avenue. Entrants, aged 14-21, had to live in either of the CT11 or CT12 postcodes. The selection involved two parts. The first was an informal talk with the panel of judges in the afternoon. The judges had plenty of time to question the contestants and get to know them. Contestants were allowed to wear smart casual dress for that part. Then in the evening the formal selection took place. The contestants wore evening dress and were required to speak on stage, introduce themselves and answer questions from the MC. The judges also looked for deportment, dress sense and grooming. The winning court will go on to carry out tasks and duties and attend events in Ramsgate and Thanet, and also attend carnivals around Kent. They are ambassadors for the town, and they promote Ramsgate wherever they go. They have a very busy year ahead of them.

They will also lead the Ramsgate Town Carnival Parade on Sunday, July 19. They also act as hosts to all the other visiting carnival and town courts that come into Ramsgate to take part in the carnival parade, and they have a carnival dance in the evening for the carnival courts.

Friends of Ellington Park The last few months have been a period of intense activity for the Friends of Ellington Park! At the beginning of March, we submitted our Heritage Lottery Fund Bid, asking for £1 million to help restore the park to its former glory – the bandstand, improved security, refreshments and toilets being just a few of the improvements proposed in our application. We will know by June whether we have been successful or not. If so, then that is when the true regeneration of Ellington Park begins; and if not, then we will double our efforts to fundraise from alternative sources! Also in March, we held our Annual General Meeting: 65 people attended and we are very pleased to announce that the committee was re-elected, with Beverley Perkins as chair. In April, thanks to funding from Community First, we were able to install more 3D Art in the Park (the wood-carvings) and a lovely new table-tennis table, with balls and rackets available to borrow free of charge from our newly opened shop (affectionately nicknamed the “Ellington Emporium”). Table tennis facilities featured consistently on the wish lists of local people surveyed, going all the way back to 2010 when we were formed! Saturday, April 11, saw the much-anticipated grand opening of our wildlife garden – made possible by the thousands of Ramsgateonians

who voted for us in the People’s Millions competition! As well as providing a safe environment for our wildlife, the garden is proving to be a wonderful educational resource for children (outdoor lessons are already taking place). There is still a lot to come in 2015. Our everpopular May Fayre will be on Saturday, May 16 from 12 noon and will feature the usual excellent music on the bandstand, stalls selling a wide variety of bespoke items and, of course, the funfair. Then, on Saturday, September 5, our music festival makes a return (by popular demand) after a two-year break. Please do come along and have a good time at both events! Remarkable Ramsgate A Neighbourhood Plan is a community-led framework for guiding the development, regeneration and conservation of an area and is part of the statutory development plan. The new Ramsgate Neighbourhood Plan will give residents a real say in what they want for the town; ideas about its economy, buildings, natural environment and the way we live, work and relax. It matters because for many Ramsgate is undervalued. With a history that goes back beyond the Neolithic, it was effectively the entrance to Britain, even before England existed, and saw the arrival of Romans, AngloSaxons, Christians, Jutes and Vikings. Ramsgate’s neighbourhoods have kept the names they have had for centuries and even 19th and 20th century developments retain distinctive features and characteristics. Amazingly, Ramsgate is still surrounded by cultivated fields beside the sea, just as Julius Caesar noted 2,000 years ago. History is everywhere but this place keeps reinventing itself. When successive populations, trades and industries all thrived and then faded, and when the threat of invasion and the horrors of war loomed, Ramsgate confronted each challenge with resilience. The experts on Ramsgate and how it works and might work better are, of course, its own residents. We are best placed to see and say how our lives, neighbourhoods and Ramsgate itself can be improved; this is a real chance to influence the future for the better. Ramsgate Neighbourhood Plan is led by the town council, supported by an organising group of volunteers. You can contact us at: ramsgate.neighbourhood.plan@gmail.com or like us on Facebook Ramsgate Neighbourhood Plan and follow on Twitter @RamsgatePlan

Interview
In Memory of Pym Brewer How long have you lived in Ramsgate? I moved to Ramsgate in 1964 and left in 2004, the reason we left was because we sold our big house, my kids had all gone and we had to downsize, we couldn’t find a bungalow in Ramsgate. Why did you start helping the local community? I was originally Ramsgate International Boats sales representative and I worked in the harbour in the 1980’s, when that folded in 1995 I was asked to go and work for the Ramsgate Town Partnership, somebody came and asked me to do that, which I did, and I worked with someone called Joe Hudson. He left about a year after that. I worked at the Ramsgate Town Partnership as the Town Coordinator from 1995 – 2006. The reason I left there was because the Town Council came along and also we had Thanet Safe radios, Thanet Safe Ramsgate, Thanet Safe Margate and Thanet Safe Broadstairs and the Chairman of that group decided to pull it all into one.

What are your earliest memories of Ramsgate? When I first got married, all my children were born and bred down here, it was a booming town then, and it still is, but it has changed. What are your ambitions? The Ramsgate Town Team, are here to try to help to make Ramsgate a better place to live, work and visit. We want to bring some of the shops back into use. It is very similar to what the Ramsgate Town Centre Management or Ramsgate Town Partnership were doing. They are very similar lines but don’t have that sort of funding. It’s to basically try and help Ramsgate and to help other groups because every group is struggling. There is a lot of funding out there, you just have to know where to look for it. You have to be on the ball. What are you currently working on or towards in Ramsgate? We are currently finishing off the steps (Augusta Steps). We are going to work with the Town Council on the Clean Up Campaign, so we are putting money, time and effort into that along with the Ramsgate Society but that’s got to be co-ordinated yet.
Drummond Hayes ProPerty Care Painting & Decorating 01843 844715 | 07798 697483 info@drummondhayespropertycare.co.uk
Where did you get the idea from to start this? The Augusta steps was Rebekah Smith’s (Glendevon Guesthouse) idea. She had seen an article or read about what was happening in Istanbul and thought it was very good, brought it to the Town Team and we went from there. Thanet District Council agreed to paint the railings*, they did the initial clean sweep and hosed it all down and we were doing things with the schools, it ticked everybody’s boxes, the community, the youth and the elderly, it was a good project to start on. What can Ramsgate look forward to from you in the future? The Clean Up Campaign obviously, if you go to smaller shops some are lacking having paint on the front. If we could give up to 50% of it (the cost), we have put aside a budget for that, very similar to Margate, we will help them out so they can paint up their shopfronts, to improve the place, basically. The market is here Friday and Saturdays, the people are in the towns, it’s encouraging them to go into the shops, if the footfall is there you have to get it into your shop, we want to try and encourage the smaller traders to do this.

We are looking to get signage leading from the Ramsgate train station to the town, “you are here” maps and that sort of thing. How do you feel your contribution has helped or made a difference to Ramsgate? It has, but only by a little bit, people are only just starting to realise who we are, our Facebook page is very well done, we are going to get a website, we currently have two administrators and one manager on the Facebook page, people are beginning to use it. We have to be out there, getting known is the hardest bit, we have been going since December 2013, we are lucky really, all the people who are on it are all willing volunteers and are all genuinely nice people and that’s the main thing with any group.
RamsgateTownCouncil Magazine
Interview
Where do you see the Town Team helping the community in a year’s time? By still doing what we’re doing because we would have reinvested some of the 5.41 campaign money when we get it. People are keen to sign up; we just have to work out the legal part of it. * Footnote amendment from Rebekah Smith “it would have been a long wait so with the aid of over 30 volunteers and the town team, we did it ourselves putting in over 350 hours of labour to achieve our goal”

Interview
Craig Prentice How long have you lived in Ramsgate? I moved into Dumpton in 1981 when I was two years old. My parents moved from Suffolk to run a Fegans Children’s Home here. We moved to Broadstairs when I was 11, but I moved back to Ramsgate in 2000, having got married.
What are your earliest memories of Ramsgate? Racing around Pleasurama and getting fish and chips afterwards. I also have many fond memories of being at school at Chatham House.
Why did you start helping the local community? I love living in Ramsgate and feel part of this community. My community has always been a great support to me and my family, so I suppose I’m giving something back. Likewise, as a Christian, I am dependent on the help God gives me, and enjoy ‘paying it forward’ to the community.
What are your ambitions? I would love to see Ramsgate become the best place in the country to raise a family.
Over the years, I have been given many opportunities to serve the local community initially as a teenager through church and various organisations. My first job after university was with the Youth Offending Service based in Ramsgate, where I later trained to become a YOS social worker. For the last nine years, I have been the team leader at Fegans in Ramsgate, for the last four a leader at Community Church Ramsgate, and recently I have become a trustee of the Thanet CAP Debt Centre.

For my part in this, I’m channelling my energy into raising my three children, and working with friends at Fegans, Community Church Ramsgate and the Thanet CAP Debt Centre. What are you currently working on or towards in Ramsgate? In 2015, we (Fegans) will be opening a brand new £1m building in the top-end of Ramsgate. Our hope is that it serves the children, teenagers and families in the town really well. It will have a quality cafe with indoor play area, a community hall housing various activities and groups, and a purposebuilt Fegans pre-school, as well as offices and meeting rooms where a variety of activities, events and programmes will be run by Fegans, Community Church Ramsgate, Thanet CAP Debt Centre and other trusted partners.

Why did you start this current project? We felt that families in Ramsgate needed a centre where they could relax and get a good cup of coffee while their children played safely. We also felt that, when needed, families should be able to access the very best advice, information, support and inspiration for their job as a parent - the best, most important, but hardest job in the world! For some time now, the team at Fegans has been too large for our property on the Margate Road and we haven’t been able to expand our work because of the limitations of the buildings. Likewise, we wanted to begin new partnerships and start new initiatives in Ramsgate but needed larger premises. At the end of 2010 the Morris and Hilda Laing Charitable Trust contacted us to discuss funding a legacy project in the town with us. The new building is the result of this incredibly generous funding. Where did you get the idea from to start this? Fegans has been supporting children, young people and families since 1870. So in many ways this isn’t a new idea but simply repackaging the same heart to see children and families thrive.

However, since becoming a parent (I now have three children) I know how much a resource and project like this will benefit the whole community. What can Ramsgate look forward to from you in the future? We hope that this new centre is the first of many similar projects in the town, and in Thanet. We are hopeful that like-minded people will join with us to help see Ramsgate become the “best place in Britain to raise a family”.

Interview
How do you feel your contribution has helped or made a difference to Ramsgate? I would like to think that whenever people encounter Fegans, Community Church Ramsgate, or the Thanet CAP Debt Centre they feel welcome, encouraged, loved, valued and supported when needed. Where do you see yourself helping the community in a year’s time? In a year’s time I hope the new building is working well for the town. I see myself continuing to serve with Fegans, Community Church Ramsgate and the Thanet CAP Debt Centre. I would imagine we will be planning to develop the work and drawing together a group of people who will join us.
