Battle of Britain Following the huge success of the 75th Anniversary of Operation Dynamo, the Dunkirk Little Ships Event in May, it follows that we should give a similar event for the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain Festival in September. The Starlite Entertainers and the Community Spirit of Ramsgate have teamed up to stage a very special two-day event to commemorate this amazing historical event, which changed the World forever. On Saturday, September 19, there will be a Wartime Street Party for the Children of Ramsgate in the King’s Community Theatre in the Town Centre. This is a ticketed event but the tickets are free to the first 75 children, tickets can be found from the Ramsgate Visitor Information Centre in the Custom House on Harbour Parade. Using the same venue throughout the weekend, a Wartime exhibition will take place Saturday evening from 7.30pm. The 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain Wartime Show including wartime images of Ramsgate on the big screen, this show will take you back to those days 75 years ago with music from the era. It is also hoped to put a small stage in the town centre with similar style of entertainment throughout Saturday, and on Sunday September 20 the traditional town Battle of Britain Parade will take you to Saint George’s Church for the annual service. A Trip Down Memory Lane Nostalgia Illustrated talk, takes place every third Thursday in the month at 7 for 7.30pm at the King’s Theatre and the following Tuesday at Saint George’s Church Hall as an afternoon matinee at 2.30pm. Ramsgate Croquet Club Summer is now in full swing and so are the many activities at Ramsgate Croquet Club. A number of local groups continue to enjoy our especially laid-on evenings of croquet, followed by a ploughman’s. In particular, we are pleased to welcome back the U3A this year, thanks to the efforts of Rodney Sutherland, a member of both organisations. In 2014, the U3A enjoyed a total of four two-hour sessions of croquet – so much so that something like four people joined us on a permanent basis. If your group is interested in paying us a visit, please contact Mrs. Enid Colbear on 01843 868275. A variety of different competitions are also planned. The first weekend of August sees club members competing for Ramsgate’s own Association Croquet Tournament. Meanwhile a members’ Family Day is planned for September. Then in the same month, the more experienced and less experienced club players will be paired together in a Mixed Ability Association Croquet Tournament. Coaching provided by Tony Mockett continues to be popular with members – both beginners and the more experienced - wanting to improve their game. And under the direction of Douglas Cossey, our Junior Section, which meets up every Saturday morning between 10am and 12 noon, is thriving. Hopefully some of them will go on to emulate former Ramsgate juniors Tobi Savage and James Goodbun, both of whom now feature in the world golf croquet rankings. If all of this has whetted your appetite, then free taster sessions in both golf and association croquet are on offer to members of the public at the Club’s Westcliff Lawns on Royal Parade. For more information, please contact the Membership Secretary on 01843 604934

Enjoy Ramsgate’s past, present and future Ramsgate has been on view all over the world, as well as the UK this summer. As a real earthquake followed the election version, smiling seals basked on the Downs for Spring Watch. The Hotel Inspector’s Albion Sunsets revealed the Town as a class destination, while the little ships bound for Dunkirk again, filled the skyline and grabbed the heartstrings. Fifty years ago, Ramsgate locals combined to stop the demolition of beautiful historic buildings. One was also the oldest surviving house. Now the Ramsgate Society’s projects are for everyone to enjoy including the gardens, waterfalls, “cliffs” and exquisite

Smiling with “Dinosaurs” At the Micro Museum our great summer Smile exhibition is now on with examples from our collection of vintage cameras along with a display of photographs taken by Ramsgate’s own Royal Harbour Photographic Group. Earlier this year we set up a display in reception of some very old adding machines, calculators and typewriters. Because it predates the main body of our collection, we call it our “pre-history” display and the machines are the “dinosaurs” of calculating and text. Among these items are an adding machine that was first patented in 1911 and visitors can see the progression from this early design through electronic comptometers and LED (Light Emitting Diode) and LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) calculators before moving on to the more recognisable models. We also have three examples of early typewriters dating from the 1950s and 60s. I remember learning to touch type in school on a typewriter like one on show and, in his younger days at work, Mike used an adding machine just like one of those on display (he told me to be sure to add: “It’s not the one from 1911”). I suppose that makes us prehistoric too!

Project Motorhouse Project MotorHouse is a £5 million community led project to turn the derelict old motor museum on Ramsgate’s West Cliff into the kind of modern facilities which the town currently lacks. The building is currently owned by Thanet District Council but PMH has an option on the site. When redevelopment is completed, it will provide a lift between the port and the harbour, a restaurant and two bars, a café, three boutique cinemas, a flexible modern theatre, an outdoor theatre/cinema, two function rooms and offices. Our work is at that irritating stage when an awful lot is going on but very little is visible yet. Hopefully, by the time you read this, we will have shown the public the architect plans for the site. Many of you are probably aware by now that the recommendation from the structural engineer, the quantity surveyor, Ramsgate Society, Historic England and from TDC’s Mike Humber is that we replace the building’s steel frame. It is badly rusted. We have had to do extensive propping of some key sections and shut part of the West Cliff Promenade. Originally, we had hoped to simply repair the frame. But it does hold up the side of the main access road to the harbour as well as support the first 40 metres of the West Cliff Promenade, so safety has to come first.
14
In addition to the propping, we have made the site secure, repaired the main garden walkway and tidied the gardens; removed the asbestos and the debris; done the utilities, drains and as existing surveys, plus a structural engineer’s report. We have also raised a total of £268,000. We held a competitive tender process to select an architectural practice and chose award winning East Kent practice, Guy Hollaway Architects. We have begun working with Julie’s Bicycle which sets the Arts Council’s environmental reporting standards. We have partnered with Ellington and Hereson School and done a number of projects together and have applied for a tranche of funding to allow us to do a major project which will combine local heritage with the students acquiring employability and entrepreneurial skills. For more information and a copy of our abridged business plan please visit our gleaming new website at www.projectmotorhouse.org.uk

Ramsgate Arts Festival Sat 29 - Mon 31 August Many of you will have been to, or heard of, A Summer Squall, the family-friendly arts festival which has been running each August bank holiday since 2010. Five years in, the festival is growing and this year the name has changed to become the first Ramsgate Festival. For the first time, we are working together with the harbour bars, to bring a taste of the ‘good old times’ to the seafront, with a big music festival, funfair and street food and craft market. Around and about, in the town centre, on the bandstand, and in Albion and Winterstoke gardens, you’ll find street theatre, music, workshops for all the family and art, mostly all free to take part in. It’s the first of a new festival which we hope will gradually bring many areas and organisations in Ramsgate together, to create a huge town display of what we have to offer – simply the best town in Thanet!
To tempt you to come down to this free festival, here’s a taste of what’s on…
Sat 29 Alabama 3 Acoustic set – the legendary band likely always to be known as the ones that wrote ‘The Sopranos’ theme song. Nell Bryden – a darling of Radio 2, she has just supported Gary Barlow on a world tour and played with Jools Holland at the Albert Hall.
Sun 30 Street theatre with Rag & Bone, Knuckle and Joint puppeteers and The Dancing DayTrippers
Mon 31 Spooky storytelling, talks and walks and the Sticky People Wedding March, our parade to the beach for bonfire and fireworks! There will be a big programme of activity, so come on down to the seafront and town to enjoy the very best of Ramsgate. Ramsgate Bowls Club Our open Tournament starts on August 3 and finishes early on August 14. We have had to bring the closing date forward due to other events happening at the same time. This would have caused problems for our competitors and visitors parking. The date for applications closed in early June but we look forward to receiving applications for next year from any bowlers. These will be available in the clubhouse after next season starts. The tournament is always well attended and visitors are very welcome to come and watch. Please do not be put off by the steps as we have a side entrance. Light refreshments are available and the efforts from the ladies at the club are really appreciated. We always have a great time regardless of the weather. Over the years, bowls has gained a reputation of being a sport for oldies. Surprise! Our youngest member is 11 and is a wonderful bowler. The variety of ages and abilities means that the club is a good mix. We have had the pleasure of welcoming a number of new members this year and hope they continue to enjoy playing. If you would like to try bowls pop in and book up for 4 free taster sessions. We look forward to seeing you.

For 12 years, the Sunbeam Motor Cycle Club organised quarter-mile sprints along the Western Undercliff at Ramsgate. The events drew large crowds to see some of the giants of straight-line sport in the country perform. Eventually, speeds became too high on the slightly curved, sea front course, with its unforgiving cast-iron railings and limited shut-off area, so Ramsgate passed into history. That was until 2015! Over the weekend of August 15/16, and for the first time since 1968, the Undercliff will once again echo to the sound of race engines. A short course will allow demonstrations of bikes of the era, including a number that were stars of the original events, to evoke memories of times past. The chance to ride at this historic venue has been eagerly taken up by many riders, ensuring a fine variety of machinery will be seen and heard over the weekend.
On Government Acre, the clifftop area above the course, further attractions will include a static display of bikes organised by the East Kent Classic Motorcycle Club and Messham’s Wall of Death will hopefully keep its spectacular action contained within its own smaller arena. The Revival will not be just for enthusiasts, as a whole sixties scene will be re-created. There will be a funfair and performances from a top Elvis look-alike and ‘The Revolvers’, a sixties revival band, will provide a sound track for the weekend. The Revival has the enthusiastic support of the Town Council and admission to everything except the Wall of Death will be free. Ramsgate is well signposted and the event is at CT11 0HE.

Thanet Lions Club What and who are Lions? A Rugby club, an animal charity? No - Thanet Lions Club is part of Lions Club International, one of the largest service organisations in the world, currently with 1.36 million members, located in 202 countries.
together on Lions projects or provide relief when disaster strikes.
Thanet Lions Club was chartered in 1968 and has now been serving the community for over 47 years. Our motto is ‘ We Serve’. We are a group of ordinary people wishing to provide help and assistance, either by donating money, our time or both to individuals, groups and organisations. Primarily our help goes to the local community, but we do join together with other Lions Clubs in our area, our country and the world when we work
Our donations can be just from a few pounds to hundreds of pounds. Our request for help can be varied. From supporting young people on trips at home and abroad, to donations needed to go towards the purchase of equipment, to providing hampers for families at Christmas. On occasion we receive emergency calls from Surestart and similar organisations requesting children’s clothes, equipment and toys.
Thanet Lions Club runs various fundraising events throughout the year. These include our annual Summer Fete and Dog Show, Quiz, Race and Bingo nights, Murder Mystery evenings and tin shakes.
Left Life membership awards were presented by Lion President Cathy to Charter member Lion Julian Poupard and Lion Barrie Cannon at our recent Charter night again held at the Sir Stanley Gray Right Club members receiving 100% attendance awards at a meeting at the Sir Stanley Gray

But it as not all work and no play. Lions do have fun! During the year our members have visited the theatre, held a Bar-b-que, had a ‘Garden Party’, attended the St Peters Village Tour and tried our hands at Green Bowls.
To find out more about Thanet Lions Club, visit www.thanetlions.org.uk or f Thanet Lions Club. You would of course be very welcome to pop along to one of our business meetings, held every second Monday of the month at the Sir Stanley Gray Pub, Pegwell Bay. The Obelisk Awards Gala Evening Have you ever watched the Oscars & BAFTA ceremonies and thought what a great experience that would be? Well now you can experience that in Ramsgate. Once a year the Starlite Entertainers stage a special awards night that recognises the Best of Talent in Thanet and they produce a very special Gala Evening at the King’s Theatre in Ramsgate’s Town Centre. This year the show is on November 28 at 7.30pm. The show is run just like the TV Awards Gala Evenings with many local celebrities presenting the Awards. The Awards are given to; Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Male & Female Singers, Best Dancers, Best Musical Theatre Production, Best Play, Best Event and there is a Lifetime Achievement Award and also a Special Award.
The show takes the form of a two-hour Variety Show with Award presentations throughout, and is open to one and all. So, if you are a singer, actor, staging a Play or a Musical, running an event or any form of family entertainment, let Ralph Hoult know what, where and when, and we will put you on the list of possible winners for this year’s events.
At last year’s presentation, we had Brenda Blethyn OBE presenting some of the awards, also the three Thanet Mayor’s, Mr Margate, Mandy Winters, Joan Le Mesurier and Shirley Greenwood. We have many national celebrities living in Thanet and they are always willing to help.

lOcATION:
Come along and find out more about this pivotal moment in World War Two when the greatest evacuation in the history of warfare took place and why. Read how the ‘Little Ships’ which sailed from Ramsgate helped save the lives of 338,226 servicemen. Find out how the German army forced the British Expeditionary Force, along with their Belgian and French counterparts into a fighting withdrawal to the beaches and port of Dunkirk. View the many artefacts on show, kindly loaned and donated to the Museum. And learn just how the people of Thanet and auxiliary services who rallied to the cause in a magnificent display of courage under adversity did so much to save so many. Future exhibits will focus on the many other significant events which took place during World War Two. Amongst our many objectives, we intend to place Thanet, its people & heritage squarely on the map as a location of both historical & strategic importance.
