2015

Another fantastic year for Ramsgate!

Ramsgate achieved so much in 2015; the Town website reached 500,000 visits; Property Detective recognised Ramsgate as a Top Tweeter in East Kent and 9 Editions of the Ramsgate Community Ad Magazine were created.

60th Anniversary of Queen’s Reign and 75th Anniversary of Ramsgate Blitz, with a reunion of the tunnel shelterers.

The Town was voted the UK’s Most Lovable Medium Sized Town 2015; Flavours by Kumar won the Tiffin Cup and gained the title of The Best South Asian Restaurant in the UK 2015; Ramsgate Music Hall won Britain’s Best Small Venue 2015 and Chatham and Clarendon House broke a World Record for World’s Largest Mobile Phone Gaming Event.

The Mayor of Ramsgate along with the Mayor’s Charity Committee, have so far raised just over £3,000 for two local charities; Ramsgate Sea Scouts and Hornets Boxing Club , with 4 months left in office as Mayor. The Mayor also held a volunteers welcome day, where volunteers were praised for their help within Ramsgate, another is being planned. The Mayor visited Conflans and Chimay, along with the Ramsgate Twinning Association.

The Heritage Lottery Fund granted £800,000 to St Augustine’s Church to create an Education, Research and Visitor Centre. Ramsgate was awarded £50,000 from the Government’s Coastal Revival Fund. A large amount of events happened in Ramsgate last year; the Ramsgate Carnival, Lark in the Park, Carols by Candlelight, the Ellington Park Events, Sprint Revival, Ramsgate Festival, Ramsgate Week, Addington Street Fayre, the Viking Model Boat Club, 75th Anniversary of Battle of Britain, Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle Jazz Festival, The Alfie Gough Trust Teddy Bear’s Picnic, Miss Ramsgate Selection and Dance, all of which were funded or partial funded by the Town Council. Some special anniversaries happened last year; 75th Anniversary of Operation Dynamo, 200th Anniversary of Battle of Waterloo,

Several community groups were recognised at the Thanet Sports Awards 2015; Leszek Grela won Highly Commended as Coach of the Year and Alfies Striders won Commended Club of the Year.

The Harbour lights became a major attraction for the town last year, attracting the BBC South East News and not forgetting the Christmas Light Switch On, which was also successful. Ramsgate has lots to look forward to in 2016. Using the £50,000 from the Coastal Revival Fund, the Harbour Street area can be regenerated. A New Ramsgate Town Promoter, Rebekah Smith, has begun her role, with new ideas to promote the town and we look forward to future developments and investments happening within Ramsgate. If we have missed anyone out, we do apologise, but so much happened over the last year in Ramsgate.

From the Mayor It’s now getting close to the end of my Mayoral year and there have been so many highlights during this time. It has been an honour to take on this role, to help promote Ramsgate and to be able to get out and meet so many Ramsgate residents. During my time as Mayor, the Town Sergeant and I have been asked to attend some of the local schools to give a talk on the role of Mayor and the local history. These talks have really been a highlight as these children are our future and by informing them of how great the town and history is, I really do think this will inspire them for the future. At the beginning of December, I had the opportunity to attend the Ramsgate Salvation Army 130 years celebration weekend. This is an outstanding achievement and I was honoured to be able to celebrate it with them, I thank all the members for the work they do for our local community and the help they give our residents who need it most. I was able to go along for a few hours on Christmas Day where they were providing a Christmas Lunch to those in need. Before Christmas, I held a volunteer thank you afternoon get together in the Council Chamber. It was great to see so many come along for a mince pie and a chat, this gave me a chance to thank them all personally for their hard work. As a town we are very lucky to have so many residents take the time to volunteer and to help our local community. I hope to arrange another volunteer day before the end of my Mayoral year and I look forward to meeting you all again. As my Mayoral year comes to an end, I would like to take this opportunity to say some thank yous; firstly to the Mayoress of Ramsgate, my wife, Mandy Shonk, who where possible with her own work commitments has been by my side helping with my role as Mayor this year.

10

Special thanks to Malcolm “Mac” for his years of office both past and present. His role is more important than mine making sure I’m where I’m supposed to be and ensuring the Chains and the Town Silver are kept safe. I would like to thank the previous Town Sergeant, Terry. Thank you to all my Charity Committee members, Dave, Penny and Sarah for all their help with raising funds for my chosen charities (Hornets Boxing Club and the Ramsgate Sea Scouts) and for helping to promote Ramsgate. I would to thank all my fellow councillors who work very hard for their Wards and Ramsgate as a whole. Thank you to Richard the Town Clerk, Eileen the Assistant Town Clerk and Emma the Administrative Assistant, who also acts as my PA. Finally, a special thank you goes to Dean the Technical Officer, who works very hard in putting this magazine together. Congratulations on reaching your 10th Edition. Trevor Shonk Mayor of Ramsgate

Olympic gold medal winner to promote Ramsgate regeneration initiative Skeleton athlete Lizzy Yarnold is the new Active Ramsgate Ambassador A Ramsgate Town Council regeneration initiative, Active Ramsgate, has won the support of Olympic Gold medal winner Lizzy Yarnold. The skeleton athlete, from Sevenoaks has been appointed the new celebrity ambassador of the initiative and will be helping to promote activities and visitation to the Ramsgate area over this year. The initiative, project managed by Explore Kent, is designed to support economic regeneration, by promoting the Ramsgate area through its outdoor activities, such as walking, cycling, canoeing, seal & fishing trips, golf and geocaching trails. This is the third phase of the project, the second phase brought in over £190,000 to the town in just one year alone, an increase of 20% on the first year. Planned initiatives throughout the year include: • Launch of two canoe trails from Ramsgate • Themed walking trail from Ramsgate to Margate (in addition to three existing Active Ramsgate themed walks) • E-cycle itineraries of the Viking Coastal Trail • Continued promotion of other outdoor activities such as golf, geocaching, seal & fishing trips etc.

14

Lizzy Yarnold said of her Active Ramsgate Ambassador role: “Keeping fit and active is so important and I’m delighted to be supporting such a valuable initiative. Getting out in the fresh air with friends and family and making the most of Thanet’s beautiful coastline and countryside; what could be better? I’ve heard about the activities that are planned for the future and those that are already in place, and they sound great; you can go for a themed walk, cycle part of the Viking Coastal Trail, go on a geocaching treasure hunt, play golf, get out on the water in a canoe or on a seal watching or fishing trip, the list is endless. And to treat yourself afterwards there are some lovely restaurants, bars and cafes all along the waterfront around the Royal Harbour. I urge everyone to visit Ramsgate and get active, I certainly will be!” For more information, visit the links below: www.ramsgatetown.org/activeramsgate f www.facebook.com/RamsgateTown t www.twitter.com/RamsgateTown

Fegans’ Family Centre What is it going to be? There has been much speculation over recent months about what the demolished church on Whitehall Road, Ramsgate, will become. The great news is, it is not even more flats, but a building that hopes to bring joy, support and happiness to the residents surrounding it. Next month a brand new family centre, set in the heart of the Newington and Whitehall estates, will open its doors to the local community. This centre will house a new preschool, private rooms for counselling and meeting families, a community café, a free mini soft play area and a community hall with areas that can be hired. However, this is unlike many other community centres as the organisation opening this centre is an established children’s charity, Fegans.

Fegans’ qualified professionals support children and their families facing trauma or experiencing distress and offer emotional and practical help to parents or young people who need extra support. So in addition to the fantastic family centre facilities there will also be a team of caring people ready to help families deal with the various challenges life brings. This centre will also be home to Fegans’ preschool, Buttons, managed by qualified, experienced, early years professionals with a big heart for children. Their brand new play rooms and outdoor play areas have space for 24 children aged 2-4 years old, with funded places available. Parents wishing to find out more or register a place for their child in the New Year should contact Jane Williams on 01843 597777.

The Best of Us In early 2015 People United and Newington Big Local commissioned artistin-residence Nova Marshall to develop a large-scale participatory arts project alongside Newington residents, and so The Best of Us was born. The Best of Us has been collecting and celebrating good news stories from Newington through a whole range of arts activities. Local people have been uncovering stories (both past and present) that reflect the best human characteristics and strengths of people.

Fest and the Gulbenkian to meet other young people from the youth-led group Art31.

Nova has been empowering residents of Newington to transform and positively influence their community through participating and collaborating as Creative Champions. Working with Nova, they have already co-created to develop a project that speaks to their community. The Creative Champions have made work, curated exhibitions and events, and programmed a high quality arts festival that the whole community could take part in called Best Fest.

“I love being creative and working with different materials that I haven’t used before. We were able to explore what we wanted to do and I feel more confident.” - Lily, Dame Janet Primary Academy Pupil

“It is nice to be a Creative Champion because you get to meet nice people and make new friends like Nova. It changes me, it makes me confident.” - Chanese, Creative Champion. In 2015 the group visited; Tower of London to discover historical stories, Tate Modern to look at modern art around the themes of courage and hope, Postman’s Park to explore stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things, Resort Studios in Margate to screen print hoodies for the Best

Join The Green Gym in Montefiore Woodland If you are looking for fresh air, gentle exercise and pleasant company come and join us for a Montefiore Woodland Conservation Work Party. The Friends of Montefiore Woodland have been tending this site, next to the Medical Centre in Dumpton Park Drive, for the past few years. Visitors have noticed considerable improvements to the area as work parties have begun to clear away invasive brambles and ivy which was choking many of the trees. Unwanted sycamore saplings and some of the damaged trees are being removed and the wood is used to make benches or is chipped for use on the pathways. Where the woodland floor has been exposed bluebells, daffodils, foxgloves and other native plants have been planted as well as a variety of trees and shrubs. A larger area was cleared to enable a wildflower meadow to be planted and all of these actions have resulted in a greater variety of birds, butterflies and other wildlife occupying the Woodland. During the year we participate in national events such as the winter RSPB bird count and in the summer the big butterfly count. We also lead monthly evening bat walks and have links with the Kent Bat Group. Woodland management is an ongoing process which is why we hold regular work parties and newcomers are always made to feel welcome. The work parties are advertised on posters at the entrances to the Woodland as well as on our website montefiorewoodland.org.uk . There is also a membership application online, the membership is free and members can be kept up to date via emails or by looking at our Facebook page. Montefiore Woodland is a community asset, open to all at all times. Take a walk through and enjoy.

Mayor of Ramsgate’s

Charity Christmas Light Competition The Mayor of Ramsgate’s Charity Committee held a Christmas Light Competition to find the best decorated dwelling in Ramsgate during the Christmas period. The Mayor’s Charity Committee are very grateful to Vattenfall UK for their support in financing the competition. Vattenfall UK are one of the wind farm companies working from Ramsgate Port, who monitor and service the Thanet Offshore Wind Farm and the Kentish Flats Offshore Wind Farm. Dave Hougham, Charity Committee Chairman, said “It was a good competition but it was poorly supported with applications from only four out of seven wards, this left hundreds of pounds with no ward winners to claim it.”

Results

The competition was widely advertised in all media forms during December and Mr Hougham delivered competition invitations to 90 properties in the town, two weeks before Christmas, to encourage more support. It is hoped that the competition will be held for Christmas 2016, if there are more participants and sponsorship. The Committee are grateful to the judges for giving their time in judging the competition including the Miss Ramsgate Court, and also the staff at the Racing Greyhound Pub for hosting the Competition Cheque Presentation Evening.

Calling all Ramsgate canines Discover the wonderful wildlife of Pegwell Bay on some very special doggy events. The weather will soon be improving and it will be time to strike out further with your trusty hound to enjoy the sunshine and discover the delights of the Thanet Coast, which will become part of the England Coast Path in 2016. If you live near Ramsgate you have the wonderful Sandwich and Pegwell Bay National Nature Reserve on your doorstep, home to internationally important populations of waders and wildfowl and other spectacular wildlife. Dog owners know how important it is to keep their pets safe and healthy and it’s also important to do the same for the birds and special wildlife living along the coast. Come and learn more about how you can play your part in keeping the wildlife in your bay safe and healthy, too.

These will help you and your dog tune up your knowledge about Doggy Dos and Don’ts, find out about local green spaces to walk your dog, get tips on helping to improve your dog’s behaviour and, of course, there will be free doggy treats as a reward. Please also join us for a fascinating guided walk along the coast from Pegwell Bay Country Park from 2pm to 4pm on Saturday March 19 to meet other dog walkers, learn about the amazing local wildlife and how you and your dog can help to protect it. Why not become a Voluntary Warden? More information can be found at www.nekmpa.org.uk

We will be holding Doggy Pit Stop events between 9am and 12noon on Friday 18 March at and at the same time on Saturday 19 March, location to be confirmed.

Ageless Thanet Ageless Thanet is one of 14 projects nationally, funded through the Big Lottery Fund’s ‘Fulfilling Lives: Ageing Better’ programme and is providing £3m over 5 years to reduce social isolation and loneliness and to improve mental and physical health in older people. The project activities are aimed at people who are over 50 and residents of Thanet. There are plenty of new activities starting in Ramsgate such as Art, Belly Dancing, Pickleball, Karate and Walking Football. Pickleball is a hybrid of badminton, tennis and table tennis; played with a low net, so it is suitable for all abilities. Ageless Thanet has had some fantastic feedback about their activities, with one person saying through attending the classes they now feel confident enough to leave the house. These activities are free to attend, and transport can also be provided at no cost if required. For more information about any of these activities, or to book a space please call 01843 601550. The ‘Older Entrepreneurs’ programme has launched! Ageless Thanet is working in partnership with Thanet Community Development Trust to deliver a 13 week programme to equip people with entrepreneurial skills to start up their own business or develop an already existing one. It will cover business basics such as finance, marketing and online selling. Natalie Glover who is leading the Older Entrepreneurs programme says: “This is a fantastic opportunity for those who are thinking about starting up their own business but are not entirely sure where to start. We can show you how to turn your hobby into a business and help you understand how your new income may affect other income you may receive. We will be there every step of the way to support you to grow your business.” To find out more about the programme or to book a place call 01843 855155 or email admin@tcdt.org.uk. The Ageless Thanet ‘Age-Friendly Businesses’ scheme is in full development. It will bring together businesses across Thanet in appreciating the contributions of older

24

people as customers, staff and service users. Wherever you see the Ageless Thanet logo displayed in a business, you’ll know they truly appreciate and meet the needs of older people. Examples of this could include: • A cafe offering discounts for older people, or a local garage running an older people’s discount day once a week • A shop really thinking about its layout and ensuring it is fully accessible to people with mobility issues • A local business offering employment opportunities to older people, appreciating the wealth of skills and experience they can offer • A shop/bar/restaurant that offers somewhere for older people to stop, catch their breath and relax without feeling rushed or pressured It can be something big, or something small, but whatever it is, Ageless Thanet want local businesses to recognise older people as a vital part of the community, appreciate this and provide services that meet their needs. This isn’t a one-way street. Participating businesses will be able to take advantage of the free advertising they can offer through their dedicated smartphone app, website and the Ageless Thanet partnership. Older people in the UK today really do hold the balance of spending power. If a business recognises this and operates in a way that works for older people then everyone benefits! If you would like any more information on this please contact Sharon Davies by emailing: Sharon.Davies@ruralkent.org.uk or calling on 07551 725383.

Thanet Police I am the Police Community Support Officer (PCSO), John Litchfield, I have been the local officer for the Central Harbour Ward since October 2015. I was a PCSO based at Ramsgate York Street for just over two years. PCSO Hollier left to become a police officer at Kent Police, I soon took over. I was a little apprehensive to be following in PCSO Hollier’s footsteps as he had been in the role for eight years as Central Harbour PCSO and had built up a good working partnership within the Ward. Since taking over, I have started a walk-in surgery at Ramsgate Library once a month, which has been very successful. Thank you to everyone that has attended and to the Ramsgate Library for allowing me to use their facilities. Surgery dates this year are as follows: Wednesday February 10 and March 9, 10:30am - 11:30am. More dates will follow.

I was lucky enough to be invited to the Town Council in December by the Mayor of Ramsgate, Councillor Trevor Shonk. I had tea and mince pies with some of the great people that make Ramsgate a special place to work including Friends of Ellington Park and the Ramsgate Society, just to name a couple.

Ramsgate had a busy Christmas, the town looked great with the lights and tree and not to forget all the boat owners that put lights up as well, well done.

One of the tools we use to keep crime down in Thanet is Predictive Policing (PredPol). This is a computer programme that analyses data and calculates where crime is most likely to take place, and it is used on a daily basis. PredPol builds on the intelligence-led policing method pioneered in Kent and was developed in the USA where it has been effective in reducing crime rates by up to 25%. I am looking forward to all that Ramsgate has to offer through 2016 and look forward to serving you for another year. Follow Kent Police Thanet t @Kentpolicethan.

2016 at The Micro Museum While the Museum was closed to the public during the winter, we were busy making improvements to the building and re-organising many of the displays to accommodate recent additions to our collection of vintage computers, games and micro electronics. New for 2016 is the Museum gift shop which is a showcase for many of our local artists and crafters who have been turning their diverse talents to creating wonderful technologythemed items. We hope that visitors to the Museum, and anyone else who comes in to just browse, will enjoy finding a unique souvenir or gift at Tech.Treasures. During 2015 a number of visitors, local people and tourists, mentioned that they would prefer to come along on Saturdays or Sundays, so this year we are changing our opening days. At Easter we will be open on Good Friday, Saturday, Bank Holiday Monday and Tuesday then, from April to October we will open on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays, plus Fridays during school holidays (1-4pm on all days). During other days we will be happy to open for special or group bookings. Full details of exact dates and what we can offer for special bookings can be found on our website. On our website you will also find other news updates and, during the year, we’ll be adding information about some of our display items, acquisitions and the 2016 anniversaries.

The Micro Museum

Would you like to volunteer to help at the Museum? This is an opportunity to gain work experience in the local tourism industry or to use some spare time in an interesting and enjoyable way. We are a husband and wife team who own and operate the The Micro Museum independently, without any funding, sponsorship or assistance from other sources. The Museum enables us to share our enthusiasm for our subject with our visitors and to add to the many attractions of Ramsgate Town. Our visitor numbers are rising (a three-fold increase in 2015 over the previous year) so it would be great to have some help in the new season. Duties would be; meeting and greeting visitors, helping with the history quiz and games play and assisting in the shop. No technical/computing knowledge required, but willingness to learn a bit about the exhibits and engage with visitors is essential, because we pride ourselves on making every person who visits, feel welcomed. So, if you would like to help us to run Kent’s only computer history museum during the afternoons when we are open, we’d love to talk to you.
