Folk and Ale in Sandwich Sandwich Folk and Ale Festival 9-10 July 2016 Once more on the second week of July the streets and pubs of Sandwich will reverberate to the sounds of an eclectic and colourful band of folk musicians, Morris dancers and street performers, as the annual Folk and Ale Festival swings into action. This year is our fifth year and promises to be even bigger and better, with an amazing array of artists and events on three stages. In the Guildhall Forecourt, we have the Main Stage for the tried and tested performers, some of whom are old favourites, as well as the Acorn Stage, established two years ago for young and up and coming artistes. A new initiative this year on Saturday the 9th, will be the New Barbican stage in the
area bounded by the Admiral Owen and Crispin pubs and the Bell Hotel. Here you will be able to hear something a little different from the main stage. The area will also be awash with Morris and traditional folk dancers, who will as usual, be in evidence in other parts of the town throughout the weekend. Every year, the festival opens with a major folk act and this year is no exception. We have been fortunate to persuade the internationally known Scottish folk singer and songwriter, Dougie Maclean, who will be performing on Friday the 8th July in the ancient surroundings of St Mary’s Arts Centre. This concert should really not be missed, as it is Dougie’s only performance in the south of England in 2016. Finally, as if that wasn’t enough, there will be stalls featuring artisan goods, food and, of course, ale and cider throughout the town as well as a ‘Chill out Area in St Peter’s gardens for children and those that just need a respite from the music and fun.

Also new for 2016 there will be a cocktail bar provided by The Old Fashioned Cocktail Co. Steph and Dom, who shot to fame after appearing on the BAFTA Award winning show Gogglebox, will be hosting the charity auction. Doors open at 12 noon and tickets, in advance, cost £30 for a family (2 adults and up to 3 children under 16 years of age), single tickets cost £12 per adult and £5 per child. You can purchase tickets online at www.marthatrust.org.uk/sandwichprom, by calling 01304 610448 or direct from The Salutation or Hercules Wine Warehouse in Sandwich. Sandwich Local History Society The Sandwich Local History Society was founded in 1962, one of the town’s oldest and most successful community groups. Its primary aim, as the name suggests, is to promote the rich story of Sandwich. The Society arranges an annual series of evening lectures in the Guildhall which are open to members and non-members alike, addressing a broad spectrum of history subjects which appeal to the widest possible audience interests. Following the ’rediscovery’ of the Sandwich copies of the Magna Carta and the Charter of the Forest, Society members played a key role as voluntary stewards and guides in the exhibition of these documents at the Guildhall. The SLHS also finances the publication of books and booklets on the history of the town. The proceeds from these sales help finance the Society’s activities. The most productive, enjoyable and visible activities of the Society members are the ‘Official’ town guided tours. The colourful histories of Sandwich, its buildings, pubs, people, waterways and port lend themselves to fascinating and increasingly popular tours. They are led by our team of guides, each one an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and natural story teller. Adorned in distinctive bright blue sashes, SLHS guides can
be seen during the season leading small groups from around the world along the narrow streets, alleyways, through the Guildhall and churches and along the Quay. Our first tour of this (2016) season was our largest ever; 120 Belgian students with their teachers. Three hours later, very cheerful students, restored by the town’s fish and chip shops, departed for London; the exhausted guides and their ‘wheeled in’ extra resident French speakers for restorative refreshment at home! We charge £2 per head (or a minimum of £12). Joining the Sandwich Local History Society, obtaining a copy of our lecture programme or booking a tour is easy. For membership contact Jacqui Linning on 01304 614866 or email jacquilinning@aol.com. To arrange a tour contact Mike Vaile on 01227 722324 or email mike.vaile@zen.co.uk.

Centenary of Manston Airfield 1916 – 2016 The Centenary of Manston Airfield is a non-political celebration of 100 years of Manston Airfield with a focus on its history and the role that the airfield has played in Thanet.
Unsure of the actual date to hold the celebration we consulted with specialist Manston historians and authors Joe Bamford and John Williams, who have researched and co-written ‘A Detailed History of RAF Manston 1916 - 1930 - The Men Who Made Manston’, to pinpoint the date for Manston’s Centenary. They agreed that the definitive date should be 25th May 2016. As this is mid-week we settled on the closest Saturday which is 28th May. The event is being held, on 28th May, in the grounds of the Spitfire and Hurricane Memorial Museum. We have arranged for parking on the Northern grass accessed via the B2050 Manston Road. There is a limited bus service, 11 and 38, from Broadstairs, Ramsgate and Westwood Cross to the airport terminal from which it is a ten minute walk away. Events on the day, include history talks and exhibitions led by Joe Bamford; a military vehicle display and ‘open cockpit’ day at the RAF
Manston History Museum; book signings by veterans from the Spitfire and Hurricane Memorial Museum; 1940’s style music from Swingtime Swearthearts and Hotsy Totsy and jitterbug dance performances, and classes, from Reverend Boogie. The 2433 and 438 Air Training Cadet Squadrons will perform. There will be flypasts and helicopter pleasure flights provided by Heli-Charter Ltd. Both museums will both be open for tours. All events will be weather dependent. We are advertising far and wide to encourage as many veterans and exemployees of the airfield to attend and we have our own Facebook page. Please search for Centenary of Manston Airfield 1916-2016 and share with friends and relatives who may be interested. This non-profit making collaborative event involves the Spitfire and Hurricane Memorial Museum, the RAF Manston History Museum and the Supporters of Manston Airport with input from the DFTDC Fire School. We are being advised and supported by historian and author Joe Bamford and his colleague John Williams. All parties are giving their time free of charge. Most of the activities are free of charge. We have received some funding from Thanet District Council and are hoping for more from Kent County Council. Entry will be via donations. Please give generously, any proceeds left after expenses have been taken into account will be divided between the two museums. For any more information about the event please contact via email ruthangelabailey@hotmail. com, telephone 07956 376907 or check out our Centenary of Manston Airfield 1916-2016 Facebook Page.

Beachcombing Bottles After the January gales of 1953, the beaches from Walmer to Pegwell Bay were littered with jetsam. Beachcombers at Sandwich Bay found some very interesting and curious shaped bottles that had washed ashore. A number of these were discovered intact – and a few were still corked and contained their original contents. A local fishmonger scooped up five bottles whilst he was pushing his shrimp net, and Mrs B.Longmore of Sandwich, walking along the beach, found six. From the broken bottles that lay shattered above the tide line Major-General and Mrs I.D.Erskine discovered four more undamaged. These squat dark green bottles had the profile of a ships’ decanter. Their contents were certainly undrinkable and the fluid had an unpleasant aroma that was hard to dispel, however, it was their shape that made them collectable. Later, it was found that most of these bottles came from the ships that were lost in the great storm of 1703. Some were from the vessels cargo and many others were from the officers’ personal wine supplies. In those days much of the ships’ water became stagnant and the crews’ would rely on beer to quench their thirst – normally a gallon a day. However, wine was sometimes the preferred taste of the ship’s captain and officers, and these onion shaped bottles contained a pint and a half of the liquid. Needless to say, the precious onion bottles were not discarded when empty. Some were refilled with wine when the ship put into different ports during the voyage. In the Mediterranean, the officers occasionally used them to store olive oil.

Another spate of bottles was found at St Margaret’s Bay in 1908. These were from the wreck of the Loanda, which sank inshore just east of the Bay. The Loanda’s destination was the West Coast of Africa and part of her cargo was 6,000 cases of gin, and the same again in rum and schnapps. When the winter weather started to wash out the contents of the wreck’s hold, the bottles were washed ashore in vast quantities. The alerted local inhabitants were quick in rescuing those bottles that had not broken in the surf. Coastguards did their utmost to relinquish this illicit windfall from the residents. Nevertheless, some of the populace decided to empty the bottles contents before they could be confiscated. It was recorded that one old lady died on the beach through alcohol poisoning. When the original divers discovered the Loanda in the 1970s, they described the cargo holds of the rusting wreck to be similar to the stacked shelves of Tesco’s. Racks of bottles were everywhere to be seen, and most of them still with their corks in place. However, time and saltwater had spoilt the contents of the bottles and there were none that were drinkable. It must be remembered that anything of value, washed up, or found on the foreshore should be declared to the Receiver of Wreck. Not to do so is classed as ‘theft by finding’ and could lead to a prosecution. David Chamberlain

Beautiful blooms
on show at ‘Little Gardens of Sandwich’ April 2016, Sandwich, Kent: Beautiful blooms behind hidden gardens will once again be on show during the ever-popular ‘Little Gardens of Sandwich’ which this year takes place on Sunday, June 19. Every summer Sandwich in east Kent hosts the ‘Little Gardens’ giving garden-lovers from all over the south east a rare opportunity to visit and be inspired by a number of private gardens, hidden behind ancient walls of this quaint, medieval town. Afterwards visitors can enjoy a tea and scones in the St Mary’s Arts Centre, a stunning 14th former church in Strand Street, and browse a number of specialist plant nurseries that will be displaying and selling a wide variety of perennials, annuals and shrubs. For those feeling lucky, a raffle offering prizes for the garden and more will be held with all proceeds going to charity. Once again supported by local estate agents, Colebrook Sturrock, and SPC design & print, this year’s event will feature seven gardens, situated 18

Office at the Guildhall and will be on sale at each garden on the day. All proceeds from tickets and teas go the upkeep of St Clement’s Church in Sandwich. “Due to popular demand, we have decided to extend the opening hours of the ‘Little Gardens of Sandwich’ this year by an extra half an hour to allow visitors a bit more time to get around all six gardens and still have some time to enjoy a relaxing cup of tea afterwards,” comments Liz Watson, chairperson of the Little Gardens Committee. “We again look forward to welcoming hundreds of garden lovers to Sandwich and to raising funds for St Clement’s Church which is at the heart of the community and one of Sandwich’s most enigmatic buildings.” The Little Gardens of Sandwich, which regularly raises several thousand pounds, has been running for over 35 years and is one of the highlights of the town’s summer calendar.

Situated in Sandwich Bay Estates, the Club has launching across the beach or from a ramp, for larger boats up to 17ft in length. The Clubhouse has a large lounge, galley, bar, toilets and showers. The grounds consist of a boatyard area, car parking and picnic/barbecue area looking out over a golf course and nature reserve. The Club is a ‘not for profit’ club run by the Members for the Members through an elected Committee, taken from the Members. The Club offers all that would be expected from any sailing club, at a very affordable price. The Club has no paid staff and it is expected that if Members use the facilities, they leave the club as they found it. From time to time, Members get together to clean and maintain the Clubhouse and surrounding property.

Membership Fees are very reasonable. Family membership for a member plus their partner and children under 18 years of age is £163.00 per year, that’s little more than £3.00 a week including boat parking. Anyone who doesn’t have a boat but wishing to join as a social member can do so for £63.00 per year. Throughout the year there are boating and social events, from a Wednesday night sailing series of races, to a worldwide charity event in aid of the Andrew Simpson Foundation, from fancy-dress to the Christmas party for the youngsters, from a hog roast to a camping weekend, we try to have something going on each month. These events help to keep the membership fees low and depend on the membership supporting these events.
