Youth Council Events Children’s Christmas Party 13th December 2014 Our Youth Council arranged another amazing Christmas party at the Parish Centre. Father Christmas popped in to see the children! He even stayed and had a dance with them before rushing off to continue his busy schedule organising his Christmas day deliveries.

Beginnings of the Greater Beaulieu development in north Springfield are well underway and residents can now visibly see the first phase of houses. New neighbourhood areas will provide a wide range of facilities from shops, schools and clinics. Part of the new neighbourhood will include a community centre which is being provided by the developer for the benefit of residents. This is being delivered through an agreement known as Section 106; the expected completion date of the new facility is the early part of 2017. Upon its completion a long term lease will be in place to enable Springfield Parish Council to administer the Centre for the benefit of the community.

• Find out how to get help with Housing Benefit or Council Tax

The Parish Council has agreed that it will work in partnership with a group called Beaulieu Churches to deliver the day to day management of the Centre and to facilitate this they will form a charity.

Appointments are not necessary. For more information, please contact the Customer Services Team on 01245 606891 or visit www.chelmsford.gov.uk/mobileinfo

This is an exciting project for the Parish Council that will attract a good deal of important work on behalf of our residents over the coming months.

The J’s are inviting couples, families, friends and colleagues to take part in Pedal for The J’s - now in its sixth year - a successful charity bike ride that draws people from across Essex with excellent reviews for its organisation and variety of routes.

the j’s hospice

J’s Hospice The event will take place on Sunday 3rd May 2015 and promises to be a great day out for experienced cyclists and novices alike. The ride takes in some of Essex’s most beautiful scenery with a choice of three distances; 15, 35 or 50 miles. All routes will start and finish at Admirals Park in Chelmsford with the 15 mile route taking in Mashbury, Pleshey and Great Waltham and the longer ones travelling west towards Hatfield Heath, returning through the Easters then all three rides join up at Pleshey. The spirit of the event is ‘taking part’ so you can go as fast or slow as you like. This year, riders will be getting plenty of vocal support from Heart FM’s Heart Angels – Martin & Su from the Breakfast Show were also there to lend their own encouragement at the launch of Pedal for The J’s 2015, though it remains to be seen whether Martin can be tempted onto a bicycle! (pictured). Heart Breakfast presenter Su Harrison said; “Cycling’s always been a popular hobby but since the Tour de France came through our county, it seems more people than ever are getting on their bikes! “I can’t think of a better way to raise vital money for such a brilliant cause than pedalling for The J’s Hospice! “We’ll be entering a team – it’ll be a challenge

but loads of fun… and hopefully not as strenuous as my last cycling challenge – which was riding to Paris!” Traditionally, Pedal for The J’s is viewed as one of the most family-friendly rides in Essex – the 15-mile route is on quiet, picturesque country roads and attracts a large number of parents with children. “We took my youngest out for his first charity cycle ride – it was a beautiful day, we took it at our own pace and the encouragement of the other riders and marshals really kept a smile on his face! He was really proud of his medal and took it into school for show and tell the next day.” This year’s event is proudly sponsored by Beaulieu, the exciting new residential development by Countryside and L&Q in Chelmsford, who are entering a team of staff and friends to take part. Training has already begun and they are looking forward to the challenge. Andrew Carrington, Managing Director of Countryside said; “We are delighted to be sponsoring this year’s Pedal for The J’s and our team of keen cyclists can’t wait to take part. It is a great community event that not only encourages everyone to get fit and healthy, but most importantly helps

the j’s hospice Pedal Power (continued) raise money to support The J’s Hospice, which is such a worthy charity helping to support young adults in need of hospice care throughout Essex.” Due to be launched this Spring, just in time for Pedal for The J’s, Beaulieu is set to make a huge impact on Chelmsford, bringing new homes and community facilities, including schools, shops, health and enhanced transport connections to the area. Residents at Beaulieu will have a range of amenities on their doorstep reducing the need for car travel and a network of cycleways and footpaths to encourage healthy lifestyles – perfect for the type of active cyclist that takes

part in Pedal for The J’s! The J’s Hospice provides hospice care in the home for young adults throughout Essex. Due to improvements in medical care and technology, the population of young adults with life limiting conditions is growing. But at 19 years old, these patients have outgrown children’s services and need age appropriate care and support. The J’s Hospice team provides hospice, medical, nursing and respite care for patients, carers and their families. They also provide emotional and bereavement support. The long term aim is to build a stand-alone hospice building in Essex.

You can register to take part in Pedal for the J’s by visiting www.thejshospice.org.uk or call 01245 475474 to request a registration form. Registration starts at just £14 (£7 for under 16s) and this includes refreshments; there is no minimum sponsorship but of course please try to raise as much as you can! the j’s hospice

CEO of Amara Supporting The J’s Hospice Andrew Hood, CEO of luxury online retailer Amara, set himself a rather daring challenge in 2014 - to cycle 2014 miles throughout the course of the year, raising funds for Chelmsford-based J’s Hospice and although he took the challenge right to the wire in the final few days of 2014, he managed it!

With only days to spare, Andrew cycled his last few miles on Sunday 13th December and chose to complete the challenge in less than ideal weather, through the muddiest route possible. It is safe to say that he completed 2014’s challenge in a far muddier state than when he started it! Andrew donated a very generous £2,014 to The J’s and he and the rest of the Amara team have also been involved in numerous charity events for The Hospice in 2014 and are planning to take part in the ever-popular Pedal for The J’s cycling event taking place on 3rd May as well as other exciting fundraisers in 2015. The J’s Hospice care exclusively for young adults patients between the ages of 16 and 40 with life-limiting illnesses, an often-overlooked part of the community. “Andrew is justifiably proud of his achievement, not just in terms of the impressive distance cycled and the commitment shown but also the funds raised – they will go a long way towards helping young adults in his own local community.” If you or your company would like to get involved with The J’s Hospice please call our Corporate Fundraiser; Laura Birden 01245 475474, ext 3106 or email laura.birden@thejshospice.org.uk Find out more about the work of The J’s Hospice at www.thejshospice.org.uk.

the j’s hospice

The J’s Christmas Carol Richard Curtis and Ben Elton once again allowed the Chelmsford Theatre Workshop permission to produce a stage version of the BBC Historical Comedy ‘Blackadder’, to aid in raising money for the J’s Hospice, as well as the Old Court Theatre over the Christmas period. CTW is a local Charity itself, where anyone is welcomed to act on the stage, help behind the scenes or even to just be part of the front of house team. This Christmas saw an enthusiastic cast of 14 (led once more by family directing team Dean and Katherine Hempstead and Sue Tokley) take to the stage to produce a festive edition with Blackadder’s Christmas Carol. The cast ranged from school leaving age to retired, with a range of experience from ‘first time on stage’ to stalwarts of CTW and local amateur theatre. Rehearsals ran three times a week from September, including three hour rehearsals every Sunday evening and full commitment from all cast and crew (the often unsung heroes). All rallied around learning lines, finding characters, singing ridiculous versions of carols, sourcing the oddest array of props and costumes (futuristic helmet or flying squirrel,

anyone?) and digging out the holly and ivy to decorate the set and foyer of the theatre. Mulled wine was warmed, mince pies were served by Victorian ladies and raffle tickets sold to aid in raising funds for The J’s Hospice. The doors were opened for The J’s Hospice employees and patients for the final dress rehearsal, to give them a chance to enjoy an unrestricted evening of comedy. £1 from each ticket sold was also donated directly to The J’s over the 9 evenings the production ran. Blackadder entertained approximately 100 audience members per night, who were too happy to donate to such a worthy cause in the Christmas season. The atmosphere in the theatre was one of warmth, laughter and enthusiasm from both the audience and the cast backstage, who couldn’t wait to run around the front to meet the audience during the intervals to sell raffle tickets and be part of the festive spirit. More than one audience member was heard to say ‘I feel all Christmassy now’... J’s Hospice Healthcare Assistant Mark Cannon was among the audience and told us; “It was a fantastic show and a great start to the festive season for our patients, staff and volunteers. The J’s Hospice service is exclusively for young adults so this fun and energetic performance was a perfect way to bring some Christmas spirit into their lives!” Chelmsford Theatre Workshop recently received news that they are nominated for a NODA (National Operatic and Dramatic Association) Award for best Drama in the region. In the two weeks of the run, Blackadder raised nearly £2400 for The J’s Hospice from the generosity of their audience and supporters. Only 30% of The J’s funding comes from statutory sources so this sort of support from within our local community goes a long way towards the remaining 70%! Hold a Fish and Chip Supper

and help spinal cord injured people rebuild Great British Fish and Chip Supper Friday 15 May 2015 Want to eat Fish and Chips, while raising money for charity? Hold a fish and chip supper on Friday 15th May 2015 whilst raising awareness of spinal cord injury and supporting SIA’s vital services. You can hold a fish and chip supper in your own home, at work or hold a larger supper at your local community centre. SIA will provide a fundraising pack containing hints and tips, recipes, invitations and donation envelopes. By inviting 8 friends and asking them to donate an additional £5.00 means you will raise at least £40.00 from your supper but we will also give you additional fundraising ideas to raise even more money for SIA.

In 2015 we want to make the batter matter and raise £40,000 from everyone holding suppers. Last year we raised £20,000 from the suppers. The money raised from the suppers will help the Spinal Injuries Association offer support to individuals who become paralysed and their families, from the moment a spinal injury occurs, and for the rest of their lives by providing services and publications which enable and encourage paralysed people to rebuild lives after spinal cord injury. Every year in the UK over 1,000 people experience a spinal cord injury and there are an estimated 40,000 spinal cord injured people in the UK alone. Community Fundraising Manager, Elizabeth Wright, says, “The Fish and Chip Supper is a wonderful opportunity for a great evening with friends and family. We are also encouraging people who work to hold a Fish and Chip Lunch in their work places to raise even more funds. You may be even a local community group wanting to run a fun evening with your group.” For more information or request a fundraising pack call Elizabeth Wright on 0845 071 4350 or email fundraising@siafishandchips.co.uk or visit www.siafishandchips.co.uk

Chelmsford Cats Protection Q | How long has Chelmsford Cats Protection been established ? A | 50 years. The branch started in 1963 with a few cat pens in Jean Middlemiss’s garden and with Walter Rolf’s help in donating some land in 1976, the centre started its humble beginning. Work has continued throughout the years to upgrade the centre to what you see today. Q | What is the main aim of the organisation? A | We have three main aims: Neutering, Education and Homing. Q | Are you a charitable organisation do you receive any funding at all? A | We are a self-funding branch and rely on fundraising and legacies to run the adoption centre. In 2014 it cost £110,000 to run the centre. Q | How big is the organisation, how many staff do you have? A | As a branch we have 8 staff, 3 full time and 5 part time. Currently there are around 80 volunteers helping within the branch from cleaners, cat cuddlers, admin, gardeners, helping with events and committee roles. Q | How big a problem are abandoned cats and has it become more of an issue in recent years? A | We run a waiting list for cats to. There are on average around 150 cats and kittens looking to come into the centre at any one time.

A third of the cats on our waiting list are stray cats. We are getting higher numbers of stray cats needing our help every year. It seems that people are abandoning their cats more regularly than they were several years ago. Reasons include: moving and leaving their cat behind, many private landlords will not allow pets, families then cannot take them but due to the demand for spaces we cannot take them, the only option then is for cats to be left behind. Unneutered cats especially females breeding increasing the cat population, many of these are strays. Owners leaving it too late when they have problems caring for a cat, we are unable to help immediately due to the demands of our waiting list. Q | If it has become more of a problem in recent years, why do you think that is? A | Financially people are taking on cats without understanding the cost of caring for a cat, vets bills and the daily cost of owning a cats is not cheap. Lack of commitment of what could be 15 years from owners towards a cats lifetime, it seems they are a disposable item in our modern times. The last five years have seen a change in most families as regards income and jobs, with many people losing their jobs and having less disposable income.
