Letter from the Chair
Cllr Sarah McManus Welcome to this edition of the Parish Magazine. My name is Sarah McManus and I am the new Chair of the Parish Council for St Nicholas-at-Wade & Sarre. For those of you that don’t know me, I live in Downbarton Road in St Nicholas with my husband Steve and two young children. I have been supporting villagers with their concerns for the past two years and because of this, I put myself forward for the May elections as I thought I could be a force for good for the community. It is an honour to serve my community and I will do my very best to ensure I represent the villagers. Our new Council is already facing some important challenges. The transfer of the freehold of Bell Meadow to the Parish Council will have several implications. We hope with fund raising and community involvement, we can take this as an opportunity to change Bell Meadow into a real community area. The Parish Council have already agreed in principle the addition of adult exercise equipment and the planting of fruit trees. Another challenge is the Thanet Local Plan which is already bearing fruits in the form of two housing proposal consultations in Manor Hall. Before I became a councillor, I ensured that (with the help of villagers) a questionnaire was delivered to every household in St Nicholas-at-Wade so all had the opportunity to submit 6
their comments to TDC. I will give you my assurances that as Chair of your Council, I will ensure that all major planning developments will be fully consulted with the community. This assurance also applies to a recent scoping submission to Canterbury City Council for a proposed on-shore Wind Farm in the area of Chislet. A recent workshop was held at Manor Hall by the wind farm developers and a group of approximately 50 villagers attended. For those who were unable attend or wanted further information, it was decided that this magazine would be a good opportunity to provide every single household in Sarre and St Nicholas-at-Wade with information on the scope. In the interest of balance we have invited a magazine submission from the developers, RES and the Stop Chislet Wind Farm action group. The Parish Council wants your views on whether or not you support the Wind Farm proposal and therefore, we ask you to complete and submit the enclosed survey. The results of this survey will be used to form the Council’s official response to the development. Please drop your survey responses into St Nicholas-at-Wade Post Office by Monday 31st August. The Parish Council have some interesting and also exciting times ahead of us. I do hope we can rely on our villages to support us.

Parish Council News New Parish Councillors Gordon Bryant and Ticia Cheniston were co-opted onto the Parish Council at our June meeting. Both are well known around the village and will bring new ideas and experience to the Council. There are still two councillor vacancies for St Nicolas-at-Wade and it is likely that we will advertise locally again in the autumn. If you would like to know more about these vacancies, contact the Clerk via snawpc@gmail.com or 07765 403318.
Play Area Repairs Following the annual inspection of the play area in Bell Meadow, some repairs and upgrades were organised. These have now been completed and those using the area will notice two brand new sets of swings and repairs made to the multi play piece of equipment.
Commemorative trees and hedges in Bell Meadow The Parish Council are currently looking into planting new fruit trees and hedging plants in a corner of Bell Meadow near the outdoor basketball court. It is hoped that villagers might like to donate money to buy a tree or plant to commemorate a birthday, anniversary, friend, relative or pet then participate in a community event to plant them sometime in the autumn. The cost of buying the trees or plants is still being finalised but it will be low to encourage as much participation as possible. If you are interested in this idea, please contact the Clerk via snawpc@gmail.com or 07765 403318. At this stage, any contact made will only be as an expression of interest and there will be no commitment to buy anything or take part in the planting until full details are finalised over the next couple of months.
Community Award At the Annual Parish meeting held in the Manor Hall on 27th May, councillor Peter Radclyffe and former councillor Bernard Clayson were presented with a community award by the Kent Association of Local Councils in recognition of their hard work to keep the villages clean and safe over many years.

Parish Council News Community Emergency Plan
Canterbury Road Bus Shelter
Along with many other Parish Councils, we are looking to produce a Community Emergency Plan. The plan will contain details of what resources we have locally and lay out how we will link in with the emergency services in response to critical incidents such as flooding, deep snow and power outages for example. Formulation of the plan is still at quite an early stage but villagers are likely to be sent a questionnaire soon which will capture what skills, equipment and resources are available locally.
Progress is being made to replace the bus shelter on Canterbury Road opposite the junction with The Length which was removed after it was damaged by a passing lorry. Kent County Councillor Roger Latchford has kindly volunteered cover the cost of a replacement shelter from his Community Fund and negotiations are currently under way with a local land owner and Kent County Council’s Highways Department about the siting of the shelter near where the old one was.
Dog Waste A complaint heard locally is about inconsiderate dog owners who do not clear up mess made by their dogs. Whilst the problem does not appear to be as bad in our villages as some other areas, it is still an issue that needs to be addressed. You may have seen local press coverage recently that Thanet District Council (TDC) are employing extra resources on a trial basis to tackle this problem. The Parish Council are keen to bid for these resources when they are available but want to target them to the most problematic areas. If you are aware of any particular areas where there are regular problems with dog mess, please let the Clerk know via snawpc@gmail.com or 07765 403318 so he can collate them and consider informing TDC.

St Nicholas at Wade A walk around this holy house of prayer for all people with Father Jim Rosenthal, Parish Priest The massive tower of St Nicholas Church beckons the passer-by to enter this medieval church and what an experience it can be for any visitor. In the porch one immediately sees the impressive figure of the church’s patron saint, Nicholas of Myra. The legend of the three pickled boys is marked by the image of the barrel with the heads of the boys looking out. Also on the image is a ship noting the Saint’s patronage of sailors. Once beyond the massive door, the holiness of the place is shone by the flickering candles where people offer their prayers and light a candle. Again, left, is the stone font where children and adults receive Holy Baptism, often called christening. An altar is situated underneath a large intricately carved image of Christ in Majesty. On the altar is a replica Glass piece depicting the Blessed Virgin Mary by a Flemish artist. At the front one can veer off to the far left and enter the Lady Chapel, also called the Bridges Chapel, named for the family of which members are entombed. The there is a reredos of wood depicting the crucified Lord with His Blessed Mother and His Beloved Disciple. The altar is draped in blue with an English stone image of the Mother and Child. To the far right, now a kitchen was the Chapel of St Thomas Becket. Coming up through the choir, past the eagle lectern one approaches the main altar, 14
with the brass processional cross affixed to the wall beyond it, making the place truly holy and tranquil. Just by the altar rail, on the right, is an 18th Century Russian icon of St Nicholas of Bari. This is on temporary loan from the St Nicholas Society. The spiritual gem in St Nicholas is the great East Window with the Crucifixion, surrounded by the Blessed Mother, St John the Beloved as well as St Nicholas of Myra and St Augustine of Canterbury. The reserved sacrament (communion bread) is kept in the ancient now restored ambry along with the Olea Sancta (Oils) for healing services, confirmations and baptisms. The church has a stunning array of Bible story windows including the Ascension, the Resurrection, Sermon on the Mount and Jesus with the children. A modern set of powerful images of the Stations of the Cross are placed around the church created at Turvey Abbey. On your way out you may wish to write a prayer request at the Prayer Tree. The faithful departed are remembered by the presence of the Book of Remembrance. St Nicholas Church is home to a strong worshipping community that gather for the Eucharist (Communion, Mass, Lord’s Supper) every week. All are always welcome. The Revd Canon Dr James M Rosenthal “Father Jim” Grace, mercy and peace, be with us all…

Wantsum Community & Sports Association Now the sun is shining and Bell Meadow seems to be a hive of summer fun and activity, WCSA continue to work hard alongside the Parish Council to develop the Pavilion facilities and increase its sporting and community use. Thanet Neighbourhood Watch I would like to introduce myself as the Neighbourhood Watch Liaison Officer for Kent Police, Tanya Clark. My role is to promote, set up and support NHW schemes across Thanet. I am currently working in partnership with your KCC Warden, PCSO and Community Safety Unit, to increase the amount of NHW coverage in rural Thanet. Over the coming months, we will be putting a team together to deliver leaflets, raise the profile and set up new watches in the area. We are looking for residents to become NHW coordinators, who become the point of contact for their street/close/road and receive regular email updates/ information on crime, scams, cold callers and rogue traders operating in your area. This information is then passed on to members of the scheme and vulnerable people within the community.
Why join NHW? The Thanet area is generally a safe place to live, but we can all help to make it even safer and better. NHW aims to help prevent crime by improving security, increasing vigilance and maintaining a caring community. NHW assists the Police in detecting crime and encouraging the prompt reporting of suspicious or criminal activity. Working together with the Police and other agencies to reduce the fear of crime, by giving accurate information about 18
risks and by promoting an even greater sense of security and community spirit. CountryEye plays a huge part within NHW, which is specific to rural homes and businesses. This concentrates on rural crime keeping communities which are isolated up to date with relevant information and warnings of crime/scams aimed at rural areas. A new App was launched on 11th July by NHW, Kent Police and Crimestoppers, this is a mobile app which enables information to be received whilst out and about, which is particularly useful in rural areas for farms, rural businesses and individuals. It will also help to combat fly tipping and other criminal activities specific the countryside. We are hoping that individuals, groups, businesses, farms in rural Thanet will join NHW and roll out the CountryEye app in the near future. If you are interested, please contact me, I look forward to hearing from you as together we can make Thanet a safer place to live. PTFA St. Nicholas-at-Wade Primary School PTFA are reaching the end of this fundraising year and a busy year it has been! The year started with an Auction of Promises which was a joint venture with St. Nicholas Fest. The evening was good fun and raised just over £1000 for each charity. Our Christmas Fair is always good fun with Santa’s grotto, homemade gifts made by each class and the usual stalls and refreshments. The 2014 fair broke all records by raising just over £2000 profit. We also raised over £200 from the sale of the children’s nativity DVD. Years 2-6 enjoyed a festive disco which raised £175. Bags 2 School are a really good way to raise money for the school and gives mums and dads the opportunity to clear out unwanted clothes and shoes. Both collections this year have raised around £80. Our Easter party for year R and 1 was good fun and raised just over £100. This money, along with other profit has contributed towards the cost of residential trips, Forest School and coaches for school trips. Our main fundraising is for developing the year R & 1 playground. Hopefully many of you will see the changes to the old pond area as you are passing. Last month, the PTFA and the Friends of Quex held a Family Fun Day at Quex Museum. The day included 20
a band, a dance troupe, Birds of Prey, puppet shows, tombolas, second hand books and clothes, refreshments and much more! The weather was kind to us and a profit of around £1400 was raised. We hope to plan a similar event next year. This month our Junior children enjoyed the annual Fizz and Quiz – it was loud and hot and great fun! We are now (at the time of writing) busy planning the summer fair on Friday 17th July. The fair will have a seaside theme with fairground rides, Punch and Judy, candyfloss, tombolas, a sandcastle competition and much more. We hope to set another record and make £2000 profit. The end of term is rounded off with the year 6 Leavers’ celebrations. The PTFA buys each year 6 child a £10 book token. The purchased books are brought into school to be signed by Mrs Kemp and then presented at the Leavers’ church service and are a special reminder of their time at St. Nic’s. The PTFA also provide a BBQ lunch for the Leavers on their last day. We are always looking for new members, new ideas for events and businesses to support us. We are grateful for all the support from our Parents, Teaching staff and Friends. Julie Gray Chair, St. Nicholas-at-Wade PTFA

Chislet Wind Farm - sepa If someone told you that a way of generating electricity using a power source that is free, abundant and infinite had been discovered, would you welcome and encourage its deployment, or try to prevent it at all costs? This is a choice that faces us as a nation, as communities and as individuals as we look for alternative ways of sustaining our modern lifestyles. If we want to have light at the flick of a switch, the Internet, computers and mobile phones (to name a few) then we have to find better, cleaner ways of generating the electricity on which these things rely. Modern wind technology means that, for the first time, we can generate energy on a large scale without causing acid rain, without producing radioactive waste and without any longterm health or environmental damage. This is an amazing human achievement. Perhaps this is why wind energy consistently achieves significant levels of support: around two thirds of people nationally favour onshore wind. This level of support was replicated in an independent poll that RES commissioned in Kent in advance of public consultation about the proposed Chislet Wind farm. The poll of 500 people was conducted in November 2014: 65% of those polled said they would support the building of an onshore wind farm within about 10 miles of where they live. However, some people are not supportive. Detractors claim that wind farms kill large quantities of wildlife. Birds in particular are apparently so stupid that they flock towards wind 22
turbines, rather than flying round them as they would with almost any other obstruction. In fact, the main killers of birds are traffic, cats and flying into windows.1 The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) is actually supportive of wind farms that are carefully sited and designed because they see climate change as posing a greater risk to the bird population than wind turbines.2 Indeed, the RSPB has recently obtained planning permission to build a wind turbine at its headquarters in Sandy, Bedfordshire, to reduce its own carbon footprint! Despite the fact that wind power was responsible for 50 per cent of total renewable electricity generation in 20143, wind energy is claimed to be inefficient. The evidence? Turbines don’t work if there is no wind. This is a false argument, because the same is true of any form of generation: for example, coal-fired power stations don’t work when there is no coal. The real difference is that fossil fuels, uranium and shale deposits are all finite. While wind may blow at varying speeds, it won’t ever run out. Indeed it takes very little wind to start generating electricity: the sort of
St.Nicholas-at-Wade and Sarre Parish Council Magazine
arating fact from fiction light breeze that ruffles the leaves on trees is sufficient. At the other end of the scale, turbines are stopped for safety reasons if wind speeds reach Gale Force. However, there are very few completely still days and very few severe storms in Britain, so wind turbines are actually turning 70-85% of the time. Last year they produced enough electricity to power around four million homes.4 As one of the windiest places in Europe, Britain has a homegrown, secure and clean energy supply that many other countries envy. We also have the means to exploit this free and infinite resource using proven, reliable technology. As traditional fuel sources dwindle, wind power is the country’s best hope of keeping the lights on and keeping energy bills under control. We know there are some tough decisions to be made about where
we want our electricity to come from in future. Yes, wind turbines are tall structures and they will change some views: but when they are no longer needed they can be dismantled and the landscape will remain as it was before. However, if we carry on burning fossil fuels and ignore all the evidence about climate change and its consequences, then Chislet Marshes and many other places like it are likely to disappear5. This is the context in which the proposal for wind turbines near your community needs to be considered. If you are interested in learning more or want to know how you can support the Chislet Wind Farm proposal, please email chislet.windfarm@res-ltd.com or visit the project website at www.chislet-windfarm.co.uk. Getting to know the Woodland Trust
The Woodland Trust is the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity, championing native woods and trees. It operates in an environment where tree disease, inappropriate development and changes in land use have reduced woodland cover in the UK to a meagre 13% compared to 37% in the rest of the EU. The Trust gives a voice to woods and trees, and tries to protect them where current planning law does not. There are 69 ancient woodlands currently under threat in Kent, and 21 have been lost in the last 10 years. Just one example of this is Oaken Wood. Although an important habitat for pipistrelle bats, dormice, reptiles, 37 species of bird and a range of plants, in July 2013 permission was granted for Gallaghers to quarry the area. 79 acres of precious ancient woodland was lost as a result. The Trust campaigns for better protection for
28
ancient woodland, and it hopes that people will think twice before they are mindlessly destroyed. Only 12% of Kent’s population live within 500m of a 2 hectare woodland and it suffers a below average woodland cover. The Trust believes that communities and families should be able to experience woods and trees as part of their everyday life, and aims to increase these figures. In fact it has recently sent 7,230 trees to schools in the Kent area as part of its free community tree packs scheme.
St.Nicholas-at-Wade and Sarre Parish Council Magazine
If you want to explore woods in your area, here are a few recommendations: • Hucking Estate (Hollingbourne) Hucking Estate is a mix of ancient woodland, and open grassland, nestled in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is scattered with archaeological remains, wonderful walks, and breathtaking views. • Dering Wood (Pluckley) Saved from development in the late 1990s, Dering Wood is home to more than 25 species of butterfly and rare beetles and renowned for its stunning display of bluebells and wood anemones. • Denge and Pennypot Woods (near Chartham) This ancient semi-natural woodland is home to many invertebrates, including the rare Duke of Burgundy butterfly. It is perfect for scenic dog walks during summer months. To find more woods in your area go to: www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/visiting-woods
This will enable schools and groups to create their own woodland, giving the next generation a personal connection to trees. Applications for the tree packs scheme are currently still open, with trees due to be delivered in November. The threats to woods, and the need to create more is an unrelenting battle – and the Trust simply cannot do it alone. There are many ways to get involved– planting trees, volunteering and making donations towards its work are just a few examples.
