Beacon Lighting Event

Welcome to Martin Savage who the Parish Council have recently employed as our new handyman. You should see him around quite regularly as he undertakes grounds maintenance, small repairs to our property and generally keeps both villages clean and tidy.

A small crowd were present to watch and enjoy the lighting of a beacon in Bell Meadow on 21st April to mark HM the Queen’s 90th birthday. Other beacons and bonfires were set alight on the night across the UK. Clean For The Queen

Clean For The Queen Event

Commonwealth Day

A litter picking initiative took place from 2nd – 5th March as part of a national event. Thank you to the thirteen volunteers who took part. The event was very successful with 43 bags of litter weighting approximately 215kg being collected. Whilst much of the litter was collected from the main roads, a good deal of rubbish was still collected from the village roads and Bell Meadow. The Parish Council would like to hold more litter collections in the future so if you are interested in taking part please contact the Clerk to the Council Paul Drake.

Parish Council Vice Chair Val McManus and Councillor Peter Radclyffe raised the Commonwealth flag in Sarre on 14th March to mark Commonwealth Day. The ceremony was part of similar simultaneous events across the Commonwealth on the day.

Sarre Garden Party & Picnic A garden party and picnic will be held on the green in Sarre Court, Sarre between 2pm and 5pm on Saturday 11th June. The event will be part of national celebrations to mark HM the Queen’s 90th birthday that weekend. In addition to the picnic, there will be some 10th century historical re-enactments including coin striking and a small number of stalls. Entry will be free on the day.

Fireworks Display The annual professional fireworks display will take place in Bell Meadow at 6.30pm on Sunday 6th November. The bar will be open in the Pavilion on the night so please note the date and come along on the evening as it is sure to be enjoyable for people of all ages.

Fly Tipping Along with many other villages, we suffer from fly tipping in areas such as Orchard Lane, Potten Street Road and Chambers Wall. If you find any fly tipping or have any information about possible offenders, you can report it to Thanet District Council via their on line form or by e-mailing streetscene.enforcement@thanet.gov.uk so they can investigate it and arrange for it to be removed. Letter from the Chair The Councillors and Clerk have been busy recently and I am delighted to announce that some of the actions I highlighted in the last magazine have been completed due to their efforts. The Clerk has given further details about these actions in this magazine. Thank you to those who showed an interest in the Neighbourhood Development Plan Meeting this month. I cannot apologise enough for my guest speaker’s absence! Claire finally arrived at 8pm and was able to offer a small session with Councillors and the remaining members of the public. However, to ensure all have another opportunity to meet and consult with Claire, I have arranged another meeting for Wednesday 25th May, at 7pm in the backroom of the Village Hall. Claire has given me her assurances she will definitely remember and arrive on time! Unfortunately, we had the disappointing news that after a TDC Planning Committee meeting and a site visit, unanimous approval was given by the Committee to grant permission for the erection of 17 dwellings behind Manor Hall in Manor Road. This decision was based on land allocated in the draft Local Plan. I have no doubt that the planning application for the erection of a further 39 houses in Manor Road will be considered by the Planning Committee soon and I give you my assurances that I will represent the village and voice my objections just as strongly for this development as I did the last one. As a Parish Council, we have never been able to guarantee we can get the answers we want at a District or County level. However, I hope you agree with me that we have lived up to our assurances that we have fully consulted the community and represented what the majority have wanted to the best of our ability. I believe that listening to the villagers and making decisions based on what the majority want is the most democratically important aspect of this role.

Council Contacts The Parish Council meets on the second Tuesday of every month and councillors from Thanet District Council and Kent County Council also usually attend. Members of the public are always welcome and a slot is available for questions so if you would like to ask a specific question, make a suggestion or simply listen to what is going on locally then please come along. Additionally, you can speak to the councillors at their surgeries (see website for details).

Thanet Neighbourhood Watch IDENTITY FRAUD

PHISHING

Do you give your details away?

That email from your bank suggesting that your account has been compromised and asking you to confirm your details.

Identity thieves get information in several ways.

The email from the taxman or local council saying you have a rebate due and again asking for your bank details so that they can transfer money to your account.

Often we give out our details to strangers over the phone when we are buying things. It is amazing how much information is available on social media.

These are a both common scams to try and get your bank details.

We throw away in our dustbins a lot of information.

Never rely on phone numbers given to you to check out the caller, be it on the phone or at the door.

Dustbins are a wealth of information especially as we now make it easier for the thieves by sorting it out. Letters and reports from banks and building societies and receipts from goods purchased all help the fraudsters build up your identity. So often when banks and building societies write to you they put your account number and details on the letter and receipts often contain personal details. Social media like Facebook and Twitter are a wealth of information about you. Things like date of birth are often easy to work out from comments left for example “Happy birthday Jean what does it feel like to be 25”. As date of birth is often used as a security question asked online and over the phone this gives them a start. Mother’s name and place of birth can also often be easily found on Facebook. Another way that is used is where post is left in communal boxes in flats etc. The fraudster removes letters which are likely to contain information such as bank statements. Often people give up information to callers over the phone or at the door because they seem genuine, for example they seem to have the correct uniform. This is called social engineering.

10

If you have any doubts about a doorstep caller, even if he has a badge, tell him to go away and come back later. This gives you time to look up the telephone number of the company involved and check on the caller’s authenticity. You will find the number on your bill. DO NOT use the number the caller may have on his identity badge. If the badge is counterfeit the telephone number will be too. If you do not know the person emailing or calling you and have not instigated the communication by making enquiries about something you are interested in, it is best to delete the email or terminate the call. If you are worried that the email or call may be important, Google the firm and get their telephone number and contact them by phone. While it sounds as if life is getting difficult please don’t get alarmed, just be wary of what you put on social media and throw away (shredders are quite cheap). Remember, If it looks too good to be true it probably is. J Sims Chair of Thanet Neighbourhood Watch nhw.thanet@kent.pnn.police.uk

Community Speed Watch What is the purpose of Community Speed Watch (CSW)? Speed Watch is a community-based, education-centred scheme that helps people in Kent make a significant contribution to improving the safety of their own roads and to the quality of local life by reducing vehicle speeds - without penalising drivers.

How does the Kent Scheme work? Operating at carefully selected roadside sites in 20-, 30and 40-MPH (miles per hour) speed limits, a group typically of two or three police-trained CSW (Community Speed Watch) volunteers monitors the speed of passing vehicles using a portable speed indication device. They record and report details of vehicles travelling at or above nationally-specified thresholds. Many of the registered keepers of vehicles observed speeding are then sent advisory letters by Kent Police.

G.W.

FINN& SONS

12

In Kent in the four years between January 2012 and December 2015, 68,247 observations of speeding vehicles were reported to Kent Police by CSW volunteers based in more than 100 parishes. These observations generated 8,539 letters of advice from which we can conclude that on average: • 89.4% of all the vehicles detected speeding once were not detected again by any CSW scheme in Kent in the next 12 months. • 89.1% of all speeding vehicles that were sent an advice letter for a second detection in 12 months did not generate another. • Only 4.3% (1 in 23) of all speeding vehicles were 50%+ over the speed limit.

What about in St. Nicholas-atWade & Sarre? Working with Kent Police, in March 2015 Tony Gander - the parish’s KCC Community Warden - organised a special demonstration Speed Watch session at carefully risk-assessed sites on roads in

D. COLEMAN St Nicholas-at-Wade and Sarre. These included sites on the A28 Canterbury Road and the A253 Ramsgate Road. In a little over three hours, 38 vehicles were recorded speeding, five of which were measured at or above 40-MPH in 30MPH speed limits.

DECORATORS Interior | Exterior | Residential | Commercial

Established in 1988, we are a company that strives to produce top quality results in all that we do. As well as painting and decorating, we carry out all aspects of plastering and various building works.

Are there any benefits for the residents of St. Nicholas-at-Wade & Sarre from running their own Speed Watch scheme?

We take pride in our work!

We think so! The Speed Watch scheme in Kent can positively impact a large majority of drivers’ speeding behaviour. The Speed Watch session held in 2015 demonstrated a clear need to encourage vehicles to slow down especially on the main roads through our Parish.

Wantsum Community & Sports Association As we quickly approach summer, we have the opportunity to reflect on the successes of both Blean FC and Herne bay Harriers (our football teams) who completed another successful season with us. Added to this we have already seen Bell Meadow become a hive of activity having played host to a Vintage Car Rally, our thanks go to Ramsgate Old Motor and Motorcycle club for their participation in this event which we hope to host regularly in our future. Looking into the future the association are very much looking forward to the kitchen renovations that will be taking place in the Pavilion during June of this year. The kitchen that we currently have, has always been described as ‘homely and compact’. However after enormous fund raising efforts over the last few years by WCSA and the generosity of Nicholas Harris Interiors limited, this is being completely renovated with walls being moved and built in appliances being installed. We do hope that with this new space we will be able to increase our hire of the Pavilion and thereby begin to raise funds towards our next project. Over the past few months you may have noticed substantial works being carried out on the cricket square and we are pleased to welcome back St Nicholas and Sarre Cricket team for their second season with us. As they continue in their best efforts to make a name for themselves in the Kent Village Cricket league, they would welcome any new members who would like to play for the team or anyone who simply wishes to pop along on a sunny Sunday afternoon to show their support and watch a game of village cricket. Any enquiries can be made by contacting Mark Richardson on 07979108398. With the better weather comes the increased 14

popularity of WCSA boot fairs, these boot fairs are a key fund raising activity for WCSA, but also raise money for our chosen Charity ‘Everyman’ which raises much needed funds for the research, prevention and cure of male cancers. WCSA run their own stall specifically to raise money for this charity, and last year managed to raise over £250, so if you have any unwanted items that we can sell on our Everyman stall or would like to volunteer your time to help run this, please get in touch. There are 2 more boot fairs this year: • Sunday 26th June at 8am • Sunday 24th July at 8am • Pitches are £7 for a car or £10 for a van. As we entered a new phase of selfsufficiency in April this year we would like to thank the Parish Council for their financial support of the former Wantsum Sports Association and for working alongside Wantsum Community and Sports Association on a reducing financial support scheme to allow us to achieve our goal of self-sufficiency. The association continues its hard work of fund raising activities on Bell Meadow and the Pavilion with our regular Friday Night Socials, held on the first Friday of the month. These events range from karaoke, theme evenings to games nights and everything in between. So why not just come along for a drink and a catch up with friends. Not a member, not a problem, download an application form from our website www. wcsassociation.wix.com/wcsa or pop in and grab a form from one of the bar team. We are always looking for new ideas, new members and volunteers so if you have some time to spare please get in touch. WCSA look forward to seeing you at The Pavilion soon.

St Nicholas at Wade & Sarre Parish Council

Welcomes responsible dog owners! Nobody likes dog poo in public places. If you have ever stepped in dog faeces, you will probably agree that its very smelly and very difficult to remove from shoes. As well as being unpleasant, dog faeces is potentially harmful and whilst the majority of dog walkers are responsible and do pick up after their pets, a small number of people choose to ignore the rules. Within the village parish dog faeces can be disposed of in designated dog waste bins. If a designated dog waste bin is not available, dog faeces should be sealed well in a bag and disposed of in a litter bin or taken home and placed in your household waste.

WHY SHOULD I SCOOP THE POOP? Thanet District Council has adopted the Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996, which makes it an offence if dog walkers do not clean up after their dogs when they foul anywhere to which the public has a right of access. This includes: • Pavements • Paths • Playing fields • Grass Verges • Gutters • Carriageways

St.Nicholas-at-Wade & Sarre Parish Council Magazine

BREAKING THE RULES Anyone that chooses not to clean up after their dog in the Thanet District can be taken to court and fined up to £1000.

STAMP IT OUT! You can help to stamp out dog fouling in St Nicholas at Wade & Sarre by reporting offences to the Dog Warden. Information provided by members of the local community can assist in the way in which the Dog Wardens carry out their patrols. When reporting an offence of dog fouling, think about the following: • Do you know the dog owner? • Do they usually walk the dog at a certain time?
