Cats Protection Cats Protection is the UK’s leading feline welfare charity, dedicated to helping cats through its network of 252 volunteer-run branches and 31 adoption centres. Our vision is a world where every cat is treated with kindness and an understanding of its needs. We have simple and clear objectives: • Homing: finding good homes for cats in need • Neutering supporting and encouraging the neutering of cats • Education and information improving people’s understanding of cats and their care At any one point in time, we have thousands of cats in our care. Through rehoming, reuniting and neutering, we directly helped over 194,000 cats during 2013 - that’s more than 500 cats a day on average.

‘Fantastic’ help for Strood residents What do you do when your phone is cut off even though you’ve paid the bill but they say the payment hasn’t been received? The misery and confusion caused by continuing to receive bills for the months with no service just added to the anxiety of not knowing what to do. When the Strood resident went to the Advice Centre at Strood Community Project the trained Advisor knew just what to do and within days the matter was cleared up. ‘That’s fantastic news.’ This is just one example of the many thorny issues that the Advice Centre at Strood Community Project has dealt with in recent months. Out of control debt, housing crises and employment issues are sadly common reasons for people to seek help but success is the normal outcome. ‘When things get really difficult many people feel that there is no way out,’ says Paul Robinson, CEO of Strood Community Project, ‘but we’ve built up a team of experts who can help with anything from unemployment to domestic abuse.’ Started in 2007 by local churches in Strood, SCP now offers literacy and numeracy courses, computer training, Foodbank, employability

support, help for victims of Domestic Abuse, Youth Work and more. ‘Everything we have started has been in response to a local need,’ explains Paul. ‘Our mission is to respond to needs as they emerge. Five years ago we had no Foodbank – currently we provide emergency food to 1,000 local adults and children a year.’ Paul hopes that one day this service won’t be needed but there will be other areas which the charity looks forward to meeting. ‘A growing problem is the number of people in work who are not earning enough to survive – this is the next big issue.’ Volunteers are the backbone of the charity. Currently over 40 local people offer their time each week to help their neighbours. A volunteer can offer as little as three hours a week, which suits many with family or work responsibilities.

Unit 1 Skatepark In this edition we speak to Kathy, trustee and manager at Unit 1 Skatepark. She tells how she feels the park helps the community‌ What was the inspiration behind the setting up of the Skatepark ?

How do you think the Skatepark has benefited the community?

My children used the park when they were younger, but with high overheads on the building, the two former leaseholders closed the park. This was a great loss to the community,

The Skatepark is a place where young people can meet together and socialise, as well as learn new skills in skateboarding, scootering, inline and BMX. Where we are aware of family problems or financial hardship we allow some of those young people to volunteer for us and in return they have free use of the park which helps them feel valued and gives them experience when they are in a position to look for paid employment.

and 300 young people signed a petition to keep the Skatepark open, so myself and a group of parents went to Medway Council with the petition to see if they could keep it open. They were unable to do so, so we decided to run it ourselves and formed the Charity in 2007, and affiliated with Young Kent to ensure we had the right insurances etc.

The Skatepark has been established as a charity since 2008 and have seen many changes in this time. We are seeing many more young people coming from disadvantaged backgrounds with often little or no family support.

We have seen a rise of homelessness amongst include the telephone youth, and this has meantPlease we have been number – Email:liaising with different authorities on their behalf. Unfortunately, there appears to be a lack of accommodation, in our experience, when they are just over 18, so we are looking at ways of maybe providing a hostel in the future.

What other facilities do you have at the park ? We have a large Skatepark area and separate beginners area for young people to practise their chosen sport, we also have a settee room with games machines, a cafe we open at weekends and a large viewing area where parents can sit and watch or play pool.

We have a large party table where we cater for birthday parties as part of our private hire. The party hire helps us keep the Skatepark running as we have high running costs and receive little or often no Government funding. We have special days for scouts to visit, autistic groups and home school groups. Do you cater for all skill levels and if so how do you do this ? We cater for all skill levels. We have lessons for skateboarding and scooters. Our volunteers teach the younger ones Monday evenings which helps them learn new tricks and increases their confidence in their chosen sport.

Students dance for charity A dedicated group of dance students have raised hundreds of pounds for charity Members of Gillingham-based Buxton Dance and Drama Studios visited Demelza Hospice Care for Children on Friday (23rd January) to hand over a cheque for £375.

Principal and teacher Paula Buxton said: “We feel very glad to be able to help such an important and worthwhile cause and the children performing have a great time.”

The studios in the High Street offer classes for children aged two to adults in a range of genres including ballet, tap, modern and jazz.

Demelza community fundraiser Hannah Shotton said: “We are so grateful to all the students and staff at the studios for choosing to support us throughout 2014.

Money was raised throughout 2014 for Demelza, which has a hospice in Bobbing, Sittingbourne, by holding quiz and cabaret evenings which are supported by parents and friends of students at the studio. Raffles also took place to raise funds.

“The money raised by community groups such as Buxton makes a vital difference to our children and families. “It was lovely to welcome some of the members into our hospice last week so they could see first-hand the work we do here.”

Pedal for a A group of Swale-based cyclists is encouraging other enthusiasts to join in with a charity bike ride. Members of the Quick Release Cycling Club have come up with a way to raise money for Demelza Hospice Care for Children. In partnership with the charity, they have organised the Pedal for a Purpose fundraiser, which is taking place in April. The circular route starts and ends at Demelza’s hospice in Rook Lane, Bobbing. There are three separate routes to choose from - family (17 miles); classic (52 miles) and epic (103 miles). Club members Darren Elliott and Scott Peters from Sheppey and Sittingbourne residents Luke Coleman, Dave Coleman, Gary Cheetham and Keith Johnson have all been involved with organising the event.

a purpose Dave Coleman said: “We created Quick Release Cycling Club in February 2013 As it grew, we wanted to arrange a cycling sportive for those new to cycling and the experienced cyclist but we wanted people to pedal for a purpose. Being a local club, we have known about Demelza for many years and the work they do to help families and children. A few of our cyclists were involved in the Demelza 101 challenge last year with 100 riders travelling from Sittingbourne to Paris, who collectively raised £186,000. Being inspired by this, we decided to start planning our first event and we would like to encourage you all to join forces and cycle for this fantastic charity.” A place on the family route costs £15 per adult and £5 per child; classic is £20 per person and epic is £30. All participants will be given a medal on completion and children who join in will be given a Demelza Dotty wristband to wear during the day. Demelza events coordinator Emma Austen said: “Over the last few years we have really seen the popularity of our cycling events grow. Many people, inspired by the London 2012 Olympics, have been taking to their bikes to get fit. So why not combine this with raising money for a great local cause?”

Avoid high fees and hidden bo Credit cards and loans often come with high fees and sometimes hidden charges too. Here’s what to watch out for and what to do if you think you’ve been charged unfairly. Late payment charges If you make a payment on a credit card or loan after its due date or miss the payment altogether you will usually have to pay a late payment charge. This can also affect your credit score, meaning it could be harder to borrow money in the future. Cost: up to £12 Make sure you never miss a payment by setting up a Direct Debit to your credit card company.

Charges for going over your credit limit If you go over your agreed credit limit on your credit card, you will also have to pay a charge. Cost: up to £12 Ensure you know how much money is left on your credit card each month - check your balance online or on the phone.

Returned payment fee If your credit card company tries to take a payment via Direct Debit or a cheque but you don’t have enough money to cover it you’ll be charged a returned payment fee. Cost: £5–£12 Make sure you have enough money to cover your repayments.

Cash withdrawal fees Beware! Over two-thirds of people who made credit card cash withdrawals didn’t know how much it had cost them. Don’t be one of them! (Source: uSwitch.com) Using your credit card to withdraw money from a cash machine is a bad idea. You’re often charged a percentage fee with a minimum level (usually £2–£3) plus interest from the day you make the withdrawal, whereas spending on a credit card usually has an interest-free period. The interest rate you’ll pay for cash will also be higher than the rate for spending. Cost: £2–£3 plus any interest charges Avoid withdrawing cash using your credit card. If you are having problems paying your bills, talk to the companies and tell them your situation.

Dormancy fees Some credit card companies actually charge you a fee for not using your card. This is known as a dormancy fee and it varies depending on the card company. Cost: £2–£20, depending on the card company Check the terms and conditions of your credit card agreement to see if this applies to you and cancel any cards you no longer use or switch to one that doesn’t charge a dormancy fee.

orrowing costs Fees for paying with your credit card Beware of credit card fees when you pay for things, as they can increase the cost of whatever it is you’re buying considerably. In many cases, the charge is only revealed during the closing stage of the payment process, for example when you’re paying for a flight or event tickets online, making it difficult to compare prices. Cost: £2–£3, but can be more or a percentage of the cost of the purchase

Using a card abroad

Unfair charges It may be possible to get your current or old credit card provider to repay the last six years of late payment fees or charges for going beyond your limit. In 2006 the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) ruled these charges of up to £35 were unfair. While the OFT ruling had no technical power, across the board, most card companies reduced their charges to this £12 level. You can reclaim back the difference between what you were charged and the £12 figure. Please mention

SMALL CLASS SIZES

Small group and private lessons for all ages and abilities starting from 4 months.

If the cost is under £100, consider using a debit card instead. If it’s over £100, bear in mind credit cards give you protection if there is a problem with your purchase. Using your credit card abroad can also be very expensive. When you pay for something, a charge called a loading fee is added onto the exchange rate by your bank. Once your bank adds this, your exchange rate won’t be so favourable and fees for withdrawing cash may be slightly higher. The loading fee may not show up on your statement either so you won’t even know you’re paying it unless you check your terms and conditions.

On 21 July 2014 the government released their response to the ‘Freedom and Choice in Pensions’ consultation, effectively giving the goahead for the sweeping pension changes that were proposed as part of the 2014 Budget in March. These changes could radically alter your plans for retirement. More Freedom in how you draw your income In theory, the flexibility will allow you to treat your pension fund in the same way as any other investment: you will be able to take withdrawals whenever you want. From April 2015, if you are a member of a defined contribution pension scheme and aged 55 or over, you will be able to draw money from it as you see fit. You can receive a tax free cash sum of up to 25% of the amount you take, then you will have the freedom to access some or all of the remaining fund as income, taxable at your marginal rate of income tax. So if you want to access all of the money from your pension, you will be able to take it as a lump sum. As tempting as it sounds to get hold of your money when you want it, in practice, the tax treatment may discourage you from extracting large sums in a single year. So unless you really need the extra income, you may want to withdraw your pension savings at a slow rate that is more tax-efficient.

Magazine

How retirement will look in 2015 Although the new pension freedoms mean you will no longer be compelled to buy an annuity, if you are looking to secure a guaranteed income for the rest of your life, an annuity will still be an appropriate option for you, especially as it’s impossible to tell how long you will live. Taxation on death to be reviewed The tax position on death under the current rules is that lump sum payments from any money remaining in drawdown is subject to a death tax charge of 55%. The same tax rate also applies to any remaining pension fund not being used to provide benefits, if the death occurs from age 75 onwards. As part of the new reforms, the government intends to abolish the 55% tax charge from money inherited from pension funds, regardless of the age of death. It has also extended the same generosity to money in drawdown, if the death of the holder occurs before age 75. For deaths after age 75, the tax rate for money inherited from drawdown will reduce to 45%. The new rules are effective from April 2015 but importantly, it is the date the claim is settled rather than the date of death, which determines if the money is paid at the new rates.
