Drapers Windmill Drapers Windmill was restored by volunteers of the Drapers Windmill Trust 1965-75 and although the mill is owned by Kent County Council, the volunteers continue to manage the historic building and open it to the public. The Trust is celebrating the 50th anniversary this year of the campaign that saved the mill for future generations. The windmill is on St Peter’s Footpath, off College Road, near to QEQM Hospital. It is also on the Dickens and Turner Walk which links the Old Town area of Margate to Broadstairs Harbour. The mill is next open on Easter Sunday 2-4pm (5 April) and Easter Monday 2-4pm (6 April). There will be further openings as part of National Mills Weekend on 9 and 10 May.

TAG Pet Rescue

TAG Pet Rescue is a registered charity, based in Margate, that rescues and rehomes unwanted pets in Thanet. To rescue a pet from a rehoming centre knowing they had been abandoned, mistreated or simply given away, is so very very satisfying but the other thing to remember is that by rescuing one pet you are actually helping TWO!! The one you take will leave a space for another needy helpless soul to be admitted.

At present we have two white cats that desperately need good homes. They have been with us for over a year now and are lovely cats who each deserve a break…

LOTTIE LUX

CASSIE

Lottie Lux is a very pretty little 3 year old white cat. She was down on her luck as someone had just dumped her in Ramsgate. A kind local resident came along and took her to TAG who have cared for her since. TAG put out appeals for her owner to come forward but nobody did so now she is looking for someone who will love her forever this time so she can be their special little kitty. She can be a very loving kitty and would adore having someone to play with her and give her lots of strokes and cuddles. One of our volunteers wrote this poem: My name is Lottie Lux, I’m a pretty white cat I have been at TAG for over a year and that is a long time to sit in a pen and wait for someone to choose me to be their mate. A lot of white cats are deaf you see But I can hear properly when visitors talk about me I’m so sad when they say ‘Oh look at that kitten’ I wish it were me with whom they are smitten Please would you give me a chance in your home I’d love to play in a garden and roam A place in the warm with someone who cares Is something I dream of if only I dare.

A 6

Cassie is a special, pretty little female white cat aged 7 years. She is deaf so she needs a very special home that is really safe for her. Maybe in a cul de sac or an enclosed garden so that she can play which she loves to do. She really hates other cats so it would need to be somewhere without cats or dogs because they frighten her. She is a very affectionate little cat and has lots of love to give so she hopes you might love her too. One of our volunteers wrote this little poem: To sit in my pen makes me feel quite sad I know TAG love me so I shouldn’t feel bad But when everyone goes home, I am here all alone I’d love a warm home with family of my own If you need a smile watch my antics a while Please love me do and I will love you.

5 minutes with...

Thomas King In this edition of 5 Minutes With, we talk with Councillor Thomas King about the formation of Westgate Parish council and how this could put Westgate back on the map. A bit about Thomas King Thomas king has lived down in Westgate for the last 15 years, since moving down from London 15 years ago he has been part of the Westgate Residents Association. We took some of his time to discuss the forthcoming formation of the Westgate Parish Council What is a Parish council A parish council like to describe themselves as the first tier of local government because they always were in years gone by when there were villages and settlements, they don’t like to be referred to as the lower tier. I’ve been discussing with other parishes and with a parish council you can have as little or as much workload as you could possibly take on, obviously this needs to be paid for and this will accounted for with an added precept on the council tax bill of around we think 35p a week for the parish contribution. In the first year I’ve been told there will be very little difference in Westgate but this is because in that first year the parish council will be looking to formulate what it is going to take on. Does that35p a week build up a pot of money to get the parish council going ? Yes it does and we will also get money allotted as we’re coming away from the charter trustees as they hold some assets of ours so there will be discussions about what actually is ours, there have been quotes of around our first years allotment being around £60,000. The charter trustees can 8

Please mention

usually be found in the Cinque Ports and they have a mayors and mayoresses who can raise lots of money for charities. Hopefully we start to take on services that improve Westgate as a parish but you have to bear in mind whatever we do has to be paid for it’s quite a simple thing if you want cleaner streets, if you want the dog fouling cleared up, if you want bit of play furniture for the children along the seafront or in the parks, if you want the squares kept nice then these things need to be paid for. I believe that I don’t mind paying a little extra for these things as things as long I see the improvements. The problem occurs when people pay extra and see no improvements. How will the parish council be made Up The most important thing is to get a parish clerk and that’s what we are trying to do at the moment, what we need is someone to act as an administrator on a 3 month interim basis and there task will be to draw all the assets away from the charter trustees to do the administration for the fledgling parish council such as set up bank accounts etc all the stuff you would need to run a parish council. The parish clerk is the engine room if you like it’s almost like the chief executive but on a very small scale. When that’s done the parish council will be elected, it’ll have a chairman it will have a committee and then they will put out on recruitment for a full time clerk. The more services we take on the more hours the clerk will be required to work. We are actually restarting from scratch because Magazine when responding to advertisements

Westgate was a parish many years ago. What a Charter trustee is-Charter Trustees are elected members of Thanet District Council whose wards lie within the boundary of the old Borough of Margate. Westgate still comes under the borough of Margate until it’s a Parish in its own right. Do you think the residents of Westgate will embrace the idea of a Westgate parish council? A lot of people have been very supportive of the idea of a parish council. The feedback that we got from the residents association was very positive .We set up at least 4 street stalls from which we distributed leaflets about a town council, these were supplied by the district council. It’s been very well received and I can honestly say most of the people we spoke to in Westgate are very much in favour of a parish council, their looking forward to it. How will they elect the parish council in May? Westgate has been allotted 10 councillors to make up the council. If 10 people put their names forward then those 10 people will be automatically elected if more than 10 people put their names forward then it would go through the democratic voting system. If there are less than 10 councillors then the elected councillors will have the power to co –opt to elect additional members to make the full council. Will the formation the Parish Council give more of a sense of community to Westgate? I think the formation of the parish council will give Westgate its own Identity. This is a time to re-identify Westgate as a parish in its own right and I also think that places that have Parish councils or Town Councils tend to get more locally if you look at neighbouring town councils like Broadstairs which is a town council or Birchington which is a parish council as examples.

Thanet Sea Anglers Thanet Sea Anglers Facebook Group was set up back in December 2011, it was initially set up to promote local tackle shops and local charter boats. The ethos was also to encourage anglers to fish locally instead of travelling hundreds of miles to fish. Thanet Sea Anglers is a non-profit making group that helps anglers with varying ability, from top match anglers looking through the site for general catch reports to novice anglers looking for help and advice on what baits and rigs to use. We also have an additional Thanet Sea Anglers Selling Page where local tackle shops or anglers can sell their tackle. We try to promote the catch and release of undersize fish by following NFSA guidelines (National Federation of Sea Anglers) and we also try to eradicate the practice of illegal gill netting which unfortunately is a big problem along our stretch of the coast line and not only effects anglers but also dog

walkers, local wildlife and beach users . We also encourage anglers fishing the local piers and beaches to take their litter home with themselves as old line and tackle can be an environmental issue for local birds. The Site has proved a hit with local people wanting to meet up and share information. A good number of group members attended the “World Dab Championships In Dungeness showing their support in raising money for the R.N.L.I. Thanet has a diverse range of species and the types of ground that we have available to fish over. The shallow chalk ledges, estuarine ground and sandy beaches provide the perfect habitat for most species from specimen Bass to the humble flounder. Through Ramsgate ,Broadstairs , Margate and Birchington we have a variety of species of fish that frequent the shore through the spring and Summer Months including Rays, Smoothounds, Flounders, Plaice, Dogfish and of course Bass , we have also been lucky enough to have a good run of codling through the last Autumn and Winter as well. We have some firmly established local tackle shops that we try to support by encouraging people to buy locally for tackle instead of buying from the internet.

A Anyone interested please feel free to have a look at our page on Facebook f Thanet Sea Anglers Social Meets ILLEGAL NETTING Please contact the environment agency on 0800 807060 if you see any nets along the shoreline that you think may be operating illegally

Charlie Crampton’s Super Team Seven year old Ramsgate boy Charlie was heartbreakingly diagnosed with brain cancer in January 2014. He has been super-strong and brave during six weeks of daily radiotherapy, followed by the last year of chemotherapy and transfusions. In March he’s due to finish treatment and there’s a real risk of relapse. His family desperately want him to get the best treatment available. This could mean entering a trial or medications that may not be available on the NHS and would therefore be expensive. Please help raise money for Charlies’ treatment. Any excess money will go to another child that needs it through the Tree Of Hope organisation.

Sport 4 NRG Thanet Council’s Sport 4 NRG Programme celebrates 10 years Thanet District Council’s award winning Sport 4 NRG programme has reached a massive milestone in delivering community doorstep sport sessions in reaching its 10 year anniversary. The project which was established in 2005 provides positive sporting opportunities and positive activities for young people in deprived communities and encourages young people to adopt an active and healthier lifestyle and prevent them from getting involved in anti-social behaviour. The project has continued to provide doorstep sport opportunities using both council and private sports facilities to increase sports participation. The project has developed partnerships with local and national partners including, local leisure trust, Your Leisure, Youth offending service, porch light, housing associations, sports clubs, local schools and national sports charity Street games. Sport 4 NRG provides a range of community sports opportunities across the year and throughout the school holidays. As well as having a main focus on sport, the project’s coaches act as role models by valuing their opinions, taking time to listen and raising their self-esteem to ensure that they not only succeed in sport, but also in life. The team can provide links into volunteering and also provide advice and support for young people to gain sports qualifications.

Sport 4 NRG also received recognition in 2007 in the form of the National Lottery Awards ‘Best Sports Project’ coming runner up after being shortlisted from 650 projects and has since joined national sports charity Street Games to deliver doorstep sport clubs to ensure the project is part of a national network. Leader of Thanet District Council and Cabinet Member for Community Services Cllr Iris Johnston said, “It is fantastic that Sport 4 NRG has been encouraging young people into sport now for 10 years. Over this time the scheme has made a massive difference to young adults and encouraged people to get involved with sports – some of which they had never heard of before! I would like to congratulate not only all the officers behind the scenes that have worked so hard making this a success, but also all the young people who’ve taken part and enjoyed themselves. That is what Sport 4 NRG is about. I’d urge everyone to get further involved and give Sport 4 NRG a try.”

Worry… the greatest enemy of a good mood We can all probably relate to having experienced worry at some point in our lives. Worrying is actually very common and, naturally in life, we occasionally experience situations that lead us to worry about some, or even many, things. Sometimes though worry can be problematic, especially if we find ourselves worrying uncontrollably and frequently; we can then find it hard to concentrate on anything other than the worry. We can also experience worries at quite inconvenient times – for example, when we are trying to drop off to sleep in the evening. We might find ourselves dwelling on things late into the night and this can mean that we find it harder to get to sleep. Often worries can seem overwhelming. Sometimes our worries act in a similar way to a magnet – we start worrying about one thing and then, before we know it, a whole load of other worries are pulled in; we then end up worrying about a whole host of different things. So wouldn’t it be great if we could be taught strategies to help us to deal with worries in a

A

productive way that can help us to feel less anxious? Well the good news is we can! Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or CBT for short, is an evidence based approach that teaches us different tools and strategies for dealing with things like worry, low mood, anxiety and panic. CBT teaches us that there are two different types of worry: practical worries (those for which we may be able to find a solution) and hypothetical worries (those which are based so far in the future that we have absolutely no way of knowing if they may happen and cannot do anything about). Sorting our worries into these two categories can be very useful as there are different CBT tools to be used in overcoming each of them to manage excessive worrying. These tools are just a small part of the CBT toolkit which can be used to manage common everyday problems such as worry, stress, anxiety, low mood, panic or phobias. CBT can be accessed for free on the NHS via IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) services.

Our service at Talking Therapies @ Psicon offers individual face to face psychological coaching and therapy to people aged 18 years and over. If you are experiencing any of the difficulties mentioned above and think that you may benefit from learning how to use CBT to overcome and manage your difficulties, please contact us directly on 01227 479902 or email us at talkingtherapies@psicon.co.uk

Time Saving Dinner Tips We’re living in a age where we work long or unsociable hours and it’s hard to find time to prepare meals, especially if you are a working parent and juggling household duties with work. Here’s my top 3 tips for quick, easy and nutritional meals. 1 Use frozen veg - it’s time consuming preparing vegetables for the table. Washing, peeling, slicing and dicing all takes time. Most of the frozen veg nowadays is blast-frozen so the important nutrients are preserved 2 Freezing down - it may be an idea to pre-prepare food when you have got time and freeze them down for dinners throughout the week. Dinners like bolognese, chilli con carne and lasagne. 3 Slow cookers - these are an absolute godsend: you can put all of your ingredients in them in the morning and when you return from work or the teenage kids come home from school, there’s a hot meal ready . Stews, soups, curries are some of the options you have.

Step-by-step Modelled Elephant You will need ] Grey modelling paste (made by adding CMC to sugar paste) ] Tiny piece of white sugar paste ] Black food pen ] Size guide ] Tin of circle cutters ] Modelling tools - ball tool, flower/ leaf shaper (also known as a Dresden tool) ] Scallop & comb tool (also known as the smile tool) ] Cutting wheel ] Edible glue and brush ] Cornflour dusting bag ] Small rolling pin 1 The body roll a ball (size of Kiwi fruit) of grey modelling paste until it is smooth and crack free. Roll to lengthen slightly. 2 The legs. Roll a smooth round ball of grey modelling paste into a thick sausage using a smoother to keep it even. Judge the thickness and size of the legs by looking at the body you have just made. Cut four equal lengths and indent toes using the smile tool. Position the legs so the body may be placed directly on top. Paint edible glue on top of each leg, and place on the body. 3 The trunk Roll a size 16 ball of grey modelling paste. For guidance on how to use the size guide read our blog post. http:// confectionperfection.co.uk/blog/read/howto-use-the-size-guide Shape into a pear and then continue to roll the narrower end to shape a trunk. Pinch and flatten the end of the trunk and then indent 2 nostrils using a ball tool. Mark a few creases into the trunk with the ridged end of the flower/ leaf shaper (Dresden tool). Secure the head to the elephant’s body using edible glue. If it feels unstable use a strand of dry spaghetti. Use a ball tool to indent where the eyes are to sit. 18

4 The ears Roll grey modelling paste approximately 2mm thick and cut out 2 circles. Trim a piece off each side using a cutting wheel and pinch around the remainder of each ear to thin and shape. Paint a line of edible glue along the straight edge of each ear and secure to the side of the head. 5 The eyes Paint a little edible glue in the indentations where the eyes are to sit. Roll a small ball of white in your hand, cut this in half and roll each piece. Place in the indentations. Draw black pupils using a food pen. 6 The tail Roll a size 7 ball into a sausage 2-3cm long. Taper one end, and flatten the wider end. Texture the flattened area with the ridged end of the flower/ leaf shaper (Dresden tool) and glue onto back end of elephant bottom.

Thanet Lions Thank you, thank you, thank you to you all for the support and generosity you have given to Thanet Lions Club. The monies raised over the last few months have allowed the Club to support individuals, families and organisations. Unfortunately the change in the weather in October meant the end of our Boot Fairs at Drapers Mills School for the year. However we were delighted to present the school a cheque for £976.20 being their share of the profits raised during the season. Hopefully our Boot fairs will resume in the spring when the field is dry enough to allow the cars to drive on. At the end of October we held our Murder Mystery evening ‘Beyond the Devils Field’ A fun evening with the cast being made up of Club members. Money raised from this event £500.00 is to be donated to Blood Runnersa group of volunteers who on a daily basis transport blood and blood products from the blood banks to hospitals and the air ambulance airfield.

Our Christmas quiz took place at St Peters Church Hall in aid of the Church Tower appeal. A great evening with 116 people being treated to a turkey dinner and trimmings plus dessert. Feeding so many was no mean feat but the evening raised £800.00 which was donated to the appeal at the Christmas Tree Festival. Thanet Lions were able to distribute 237 Christmas hampers to individuals and families who are less fortunate than ourselves. Our thanks to Asda Broadstairs for dealing with our very long shopping list and allowing us to pack our bags in their restaurant. We were also able to provide presents for the Mums and children spending Christmas at Oasis, the women’s refuge. We have received some very lovely letters and e-mails of thanks which the Club very much appreciate. Our total Christmas spend was just under £2500.00. Christmas also gives club members the opportunity to bring out their Father Christmas and elf outfits. Club members were delighted to assist Wyevale Garden Centre

with their Breakfast and Tea with Father Christmas events. A good time was had by all; the children we met were delightful, ranging in ages from 10 days to 12 years old. It was lovely to hear what was on their Christmas list, from Lego, everything you can imagine to do with Frozen and marbles! We would like to thank everyone who has supported our Christmas basket raffles and our tin shakes at Asda, Tesco and Wyevale. Monies raised from these events helped fund our Christmas projects. It is not all fundraising at Thanet Lions Club, giving of time is just as important as money. In October some Club members helped the plot holders of Culmers Allotments clear some derelict overgrown land. It is hoped by the spring that the area will provide habitat for insects and wildlife as well as extend some of the existing plots. In November and January Club members helped the Dane Valley Woods team plant a further 600 saplings being part of the next stage of creating the woods. Dane Valley Woods in turn donated 3 hazelnut trees which we were able to pass on Dame Janet Academy School. The Year 3 children had been working on a Rainforest project and this was a fitting end for them to help plant the trees in their school grounds and watch them grow.

More volunteers, please! Thanet Community Support Partnership is a central point of contact for a group of organisations who support older people in various ways. The aim is to reduce isolation and boost their morale by way of recruiting volunteers to pop in on someone regularly for a cup of tea and a chat, help with shopping or maybe go for a drive just to break the day up. Here are some of the comments from our volunteers… “It’s very rewarding and I look forward to each week” “I feel good about myself” “I really enjoy being more active in my community. The interactions I have with my friend are just as valuable to me as they are to her” “It’s about meeting people, helping others, feeling needed” Here are the comments from some of our people using our service:“We have become great friends and feel very comfortable in each other’s company” “As I don’t get out much, having a volunteer has given me much more to look forward to”

Making the Pennies Go further It’s a sad fact of life that we’re living in an age where our expenditures and our incomes are tightly contested. People from all walks of life are pinching the pennies and trying to make their hard earned cash go further.

Over the next few issues we’ll look at some ways to save money by making small changes to our buying choices. It’s the simple things that can make the difference and the way we spend money can often be habitual in the way we shop and consume.

Car Insurance Unfortunately we all have to pay insurance it’s a yearly ritual that we all dread doing. Insurance is never as straight forward as it looks and although strictly regulated by the FCA it still appears as clear as mud for Joe public as far as the small print and terms and conditions. Quite often we never look at the renewals that we are sent through or we set them aside and put them on the the “to do list”. We have been blessed in recent years with the comparison sites that do all the hard work for us searching hundreds of websites for the best deals for us. What we need to remember is that the Insurance companies all have individual underwriters that stipulate the terms and conditions for the policies we buy, it’s always worth using a few different comparison sites as they will search different companies. Mileage, usage, driver age, claims history the list is endless for the risk factors that they will take in to consideration. The secret to keeping your insurance cost down without being deceitful and breaking the law is to accurately record information. Mileage is a key factor in risk, quite often people vastly over estimate their mileage a good way to estimate your mileage is to take a weekly average and multiply by 52, this will give you 24

Please mention

a fair estimate for the year. Is your spouse or partner on the policy? Quite often there is a discount if they are added, some underwriters will see this as a lower risk as the couple both have an financial interest in the vehicle and if there is a lower risk on long journeys if driving responsibility can be shared so don’t shy away from adding them to the quote in fear of the premium going up. Named drivers on the policy can increase the price of the policy dramatically; it’s always worth looking at how often they use the vehicle, if their only using it very occasionally then it may be worth adding them on when you need them by using “Temporary Driver Cover” it’s always worth checking . Another fact that is quite often over looked is that having fully comprehensive insurance can be cheaper than third Party , this is because higher risk drivers like young drivers, bad drivers or drivers with claims or convictions have often opted for this option thus making it a higher risk in the eyes of the underwriter. The key is to plan in advance but remember that most quotes are only valid for a certain period so it’s best to start looking a couple of weeks before your renewal. Westgate Heritage Centre The Westgate Heritage Centre in St Saviour’s Church, Westgate Bay Avenue will be open for the summer season on Saturdays and Wednesdays from 10am to 12 noon, from Saturday 2 May until Saturday 5 September. There will be a talk at 10.30am on the first Saturday of the month. 2015 is a year of anniversaries, which the Heritage Centre will be keeping. We shall be finishing our winter season with three events in April to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the creation of “Greater Margate”, when the civil parishes of Westgateon-Sea and Birchington were amalgamated with the Borough of Margate. Whether this was time to celebrate or commiserate depended on one’s point of view! On Saturday 4 April there will be a talk at 10.30am by Dr Dawn Crouch on the events leading up to the amalgamation, based on archives from many sources. On Friday 10 April Heather Letley, a member of the Heritage Centre, will lead a walk to commemorate the “Beating of the Bounds” ceremony that took place on 1 April 1935 with much pomp and ceremony. The full bounds of the enlarged Borough were covered by officials and dignitaries in cars and coaches; choir boys were bumped and toasts drunk liberally from the 1892 “Loving Cup” at several points on the way. The Heritage Walk, (which will combine with the weekly Health Walk), starts from Westgate Library at

10.30am. Those walkers hope to arrive at the junction of Old Boundary Road with Westgate Bay Avenue about 10.45am when there will be an “enactment” of the 1935 ceremony. The walkers will then proceed via Sea Road to the Westgate-Birchington boundary marker, which is near to the entrance to 131 Sea Road. Please join us at any point along the way. Those who cannot walk will be welcome to follow in cars, as happened in 1935. On Wednesday 15 April at 7.30pm in Christ Church URC Church Westgate Bay Avenue, James Brazier will give an illustrated talk on the Beating of the Bounds in 1935 – he has a fantastic collection of Sunbeam photos that were taken on the day at various points along the route, amongst others. It should be of interest to anyone who lives in Margate, Westgate or Birchington. 2015 is also the 150th anniversary of the building of the first two houses of the “new town”. We shall be celebrating that in July, but in the meanwhile, we should like to encourage anyone who regards him or herself as a true Westgatonian to celebrate, in a way they choose, by going to St Mildred’s Bay to walk, to sit, to have a coffee or a drink and think how lucky we are to live in such an interesting and lovely place. Please look out for posters and flyers about events. Dr Dawn Crouch Curator Copper Connect Plumbing Services From a dripping tap to full renovations

Pegwell Bay The estuary of the River Stour runs into Pegwell Bay producing a fertile mudflat with saltmarsh. It is a Ramsar Site of International Importance for migrating wading birds and wildfowl. In the winter the foreshore and mudflats attract thousands of wading birds; including dunlin, lapwing, curlew, oystercatcher, sanderling and grey plover. Birds of prey, such as merlin and peregrine falcon are occasional visitors in search of a meal; providing a spectacle as they pursue the small waders Sanderling and select the weakest, later consuming them on the saltmarsh. The peregrine is a conservation success, having once been decimated by insecticides such as DDT and the organo-chlorides; fortunately now banned. The Saxon Shore Way passes through Pegwell Bay; walking south brings you into the Stonelees area and here there are southern marsh orchids, pyramidal orchids and marsh helleborine orchids. The wooded scrub here is very good for breeding warblers, finches and other passerines. Golden orioles are sometimes seen in the Peregrine Falcon poplars bordering the Sports Ground and these are rare migrants; an occasional nightingale may sing in the spring. The best way to get to grips with the variety of birds and other wildlife is to join a local group such as the Thanet Group of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, who meet at The Portland Centre, Hopeville Avenue, St Peters on the last Tuesday of each month. At spring and autumn the area can be alive with migrant spotted flycatchers, chiffchaff and willow warblers with blackcaps, common whitethroat and lesser whitethroat Brian Summerfield

Dalby Square Dalby Square in Cliftonville was laid out in 1865 on what were previously cornfields. These three-sided squares were considered to protect the eminent Victorians from the North Sea winds. Properties were built on the west, south and east sides of Dalby Square with the properties numbered consecutively in that order. Firstly, there was much confusion regarding the name of this square. Montpelier Square, Warrior Square, Ethelbert Square and Dalby Square were all suggested names for this piece of land and, in the end, the Borough Council decided on the last one which was named after the entrepreneur Thomas Dalby Reeve (1814-1875) who pioneered the development and built a high-class residential area. Mr Reeve, once Mayor of Margate (1873-75), was a prominent local businessman who founded Reeves Mineral Water Manufacturers and, using products from his own brickfield,

built much of what is now Cliftonville. In 1885, tennis courts and lawns were added to the centre of the square and many of the buildings became ladies’ schools and colleges. In 1907, the estate of the late Thomas Dalby Reeve was sold and the garden enclosure let out again as tennis courts and croquet lawns. Later, in 1914, the residents of Dalby Square suggested the gardens be purchased and laid out by the Margate Corporation. The Corporation rejected this suggestion saying: “If the occupiers wanted the land improved, they should do it themselves”. If you look above numbers 11-15 on the west side of Dalby Square, you will note the words DALBY TERRACE 1870 on the fascia of these buildings. Also built in 1870 was number 33 Dalby Square, on the east side of Dalby Square. This property was built for the renowned London gunsmith, James Purdy. By 1894, this building had become Skelsmergh House School.

The author Dennis Wheatley attended this school from 1905 to 1909. The school was sold in 1919. On the 1891 Census, William Knight Treves, surgeon, was living at 31 Dalby Square. He was the brother of Frederick Treves, also a surgeon, who is known for treating Joseph Carey Merrick, better known as the ‘Elephant Man’. Frederick Treves was also appointed Sergeant Surgeon to King Edward VII. One of Alfred Lord Tennyson’s sisters, Mary, lived in Cliftonville and lays at rest in Margate Cemetery. She died on 4th April 1884 aged 71 at 1 Dalby Road, Cliftonville. She was married to the Honourable Justice Ker, Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court of Jamaica. New College at 16 Dalby Square was built in 1871 and started its school life under the name Palmer House School. By 1886, it had become New College when the Jones family took over. The headmaster was the Rev George Hugh Jones of Trinity College who made a reputation in tutorial work in his university, and whose pupils rose to the highest positions in the Church and at the Bar. The Rev George Hugh Jones had a daughter, Ethel Ann Walton née Jones, who, after teaching at New College set up her own school at 9-10 Dalby Square in 1899, called the Queen’s School. In the 1913-14 edition of Kelly’s Directory to the Isle of Thanet, number 16 Dalby Square is shown as Northcliffe House Preparatory School. A local would note that the two roads which lead from Dalby Square to Northdown Road are named Dalby Road, which is self explanatory, and Arthur Road. Arthur Road was named after Robert Dalby Reeve’s son Arthur Reeve (1855-1933), who married Please mention

Dalby Square (continued) Harriet Sanger (1855-1929), daughter of the great showman ‘Lord’ George Sanger (18271911) of the Hall-by-the-Sea in Margate. Arthur Road has had its fair share of interesting properties and well-known residents. The first buildings to appear on the road are now numbered 21-23, The Warren Court Hotel. This once grand building is sadly beyond redevelopment after many arson attacks. In December 2007, fire crews from as far as Herne Bay, Canterbury and Wingham fought a blaze which raged for nine hours. The Warren Court Hotel was previously Cliftonville College for Boys. The first mention of Cliftonville College that I can find is on the 1891 Census when Thomas Everard Healey was schoolmaster and, later, an advertisement dated 1897 when Oscar Skey was headmaster. Cliftonville College was still running in 1927. By 1936, it had become Cliftonville School of Domestic Science before it was a boarding house. Later on, it was a typical seaside hotel. It may be hard to imagine but on the area to the north of the Warren Court Hotel, and which is now an open green space, were seven properties, numbered 17-23 Dalby

Square. On 1st June 1943, enemy bombs fell on Margate destroying shops at the bottom part of Margate High Street and also Holy Trinity Church. Numbers 20 and 21 Dalby Square were also bombed and never rebuilt. After the war, most properties in Dalby Square became seaside hotels and lodgings. By the 1980s, the former Hotel Mediterranean numbered 17-19 Dalby Square had fallen into disrepair and, in 1989, was used for filming a Christmas special of the TV series Only Fools and Horses when it was named Mrs Creswell’s Villa Bella. Number 32 was also used in the filming of Only Fools and Horses as Mrs Baker’s Sunny Sea Guest House. In 1997, it was reported that Thanet District Council were to purchase this area of land in the centre of Dalby Square for £50,000. The site, which was repossessed by a bank, was on the market for £250,000 in 1995. At the height of the property boom in 1989, planning consent was given to build a seven-storey block of 85 sheltered flats, but the development never went ahead. Today, community groups are working hard to keep this area clean, tidy and accessible to all. Suzannah Foad

Staffordshire Street site Proposals welcomed for Staffordshire Street site in Ramsgate Thanet District Council is calling for expressions of interest in a potential development opportunity at Staffordshire Street in Ramsgate. The council-owned site, situated on the north east of Ramsgate Town Centre, is currently used as a car park and was suggested for disposal in 2009. Although all options will be considered, the council would prefer the site to be developed for leisure use for Ramsgate residents and to support the wider regeneration of the town by increasing footfall in this part of the town shopping centre. Innovative proposals that retain an element of town centre parking will be welcomed. Proposals for development would also need to carefully reflect that part of the site falls within Ramsgate’s conservation area. All expressions of interest, including details of the development, should be sent to estates@thanet.gov.uk by no later than Friday 2 March 2015. The council will review the proposals put forward before making a decision on how to progress. Any decision for the site would be subject to the council’s Asset Management process.

Manston Airport Government will appoint a consultant to review the process so far on decisions about the future of Manston Airport. The government will appoint a consultant to undertake a review of the process so far on decisions about the future of Manston Airport, Transport Minister John Hayes announced today (5 March 2015). The Kent airport closed on 15 May 2014 and Thanet District Council has subsequently been seeking a deal to secure its future. The Prime Minister made a commitment to do everything he can to help. Creating more jobs so more people have the security of a regular wage is a part of the government’s long-term economic plan for South Thanet, and Manston Airport has a vital role to play. John Hayes was at Manston today to meet those at the heart of the process, including leader of Thanet District Council Iris Johnston and local MP Roger Gale.

38

Please mention

John Hayes said: I recognise the strong interest in keeping Manston Airport open which is why the government is leaving no stone unturned in the battle to secure its future. Today I can confirm my department will appoint a well-established consultant to review the process so far on decisions about the airport’s future. While it is down to Thanet District Council ultimately to agree a deal, the government is doing everything possible to support them in finding a way forward. The council considered the suitability of a compulsory purchase order on the site, but was unable to agree a suitable indemnity partner. The Department for Transport will now commission an independent consultant to review the process on its behalf.
