7 lives left! During the summer last year, black and white kitten Billy was hit by a car in Birchington and left for dead by a driver who didn’t stop. Billy went missing, but after 4 days he managed to drag himself back to owner Tony’s home who took him straight to the vet. Unfortunately the injuries to his front leg were too severe and it had to be amputated. After a few months Billy started getting used to having 3 legs and he was back on top form again. However, on the 20th December he went missing again, and didn’t come back right over the Christmas period. Owner Tony was extremely concerned and went knocking on doors to see if anybody had seen him, and he even made a Facebook group looking for little Billy. Eventually on the 29th December he got a call from Eagle Vets in Minster who Billy had been brought to by one of their customers. As he was chipped, the vets were able to find the owner and get in touch with him, but unfortunately the news wasn’t good; Billy was not in good shape, and X-rays showed that his entire pelvis has been completely shattered. “When Billy was hit by the car last year, he was covered in scuffs, cuts and blood, but this time there were absolutely no injuries like this everything seemed to be internal”, Tony told me. “I honestly think that someone kicked Billy which makes me feel sick, especially after what those kids from Thanet did to that poor puppy last year. Who could do something like that?”.

The operation to repair Billy’s pelvis was such a specialist task that many of the local vets around Thanet were unable to help, but George of Eagle Vets came to the rescue. Billy had to have plates and pins inserted into his pelvis to hold it together, and happily, he is now back home and recovering. “The vets have been absolutely wonderful, not only throughout the procedure, but the aftercare has also been amazing. Billy has had trouble urinating since the accident, so he needs his bladder squeezed manually at the moment while he recovers. I found it really hard to do this so the vets have been doing it for me every day. Even when the practice was closed, Vet Debbie came and opened up so that she could do it for me! They’ve also been coming round once a week to do laser treatment to help heal his bones”. “I really cant thank them enough for everything they’ve done. They’re definitely not just a money making company - they really genuinely care about the animals”. Billy is making a slow recovery but he is out of pain and resting at home. He is now beginning to walk again, but Tony estimates that it will be many months before he is back to his old self again.

Bin it for Good

anti-litter campaign celebrates success The results are in and the anti-litter campaign ‘Bin it for Good’ has raised a tremendous £1,500 during its three months for Thanet based charities. In addition to the money and awareness raised for Oasis Domestic Abuse Service, Porchlight and Pilgrims Hospices, the campaign has been successful in reducing the amount of litter dropped on our streets over the three months by an average of 35%. Each charity has achieved the maximum prize pot of £500 each due to these fantastic results. Launched at the start of September, the three month initiative - which is a partnership between Thanet District Council, The Wrigley Company and Keep Britain Tidy - aimed to change behaviour whilst turning cleaner streets into cash for charities and good causes; and it has worked. The ‘Bin it for Good’ charity pot logo was proudly displayed on designated public bins around Margate Old Town. The more litter that went into these charity pot bins, instead of on the ground, the more money the featured charity received.

Plumber Sam

The scheme’s success has pleased all those involved who worked to get it launched. Cllr. Suzanne Brimm, Cabinet Member for Operational Services, said “We are so pleased with how the public and local businesses have responded to the scheme and supported it. We have seen a positive change in attitude to dropping litter since the start of the campaign. Initiatives such as ‘Bin it for Good’ are a great proactive way to encourage people not to drop their rubbish rather than having to rely on fines. The learning from this project will hopefully inspire some other similar projects in the future around the district” The above photo shows the delegates from the three charities receiving there cheques. From left to right the photo includes Rachel van Hoven (Community Fundraising Manager, Porchlight), Loukia Michael (Fundraiser, Oasis Domestic Abuse Service), Jasmin Rose (Environmental Education Officer, Thanet District Council), Darren Scott (Cleansing Operative, Thanet District Council), Steven Hadley (Cleansing Operatives, Thanet District Council) and Karen Kenward (Community Fundraising Manager, Pilgrims Hospices)

Housing and Infrastructure KCC calls for joined-up approach to housing and infrastructure to support growth in the south east.

“It tells a sobering story about the challenge we face in delivering the growth to which the 12 districts aspire, but it also gives us a unique chance to do something about it.

Long term growth in Kent could be jeopardised by a chasm between housing and infrastructure, according to a new report commissioned by KCC.

“The growth challenge we face in Kent and Medway is significant – to deliver the approximately 160,000 homes and over 135,000 jobs that local authorities are planning across the area to 2031, there is a £6.74bn bill for infrastructure, of which £2bn is unfunded.

The Kent and Medway Growth Infrastructure Framework (GIF) has been developed by the authority in collaboration with Medway Council, the 12 district authorities and health and utility sectors. The report highlights the significant growth anticipated in Kent over the next 16 years and identifies £6.74bn of infrastructure developments required to support it.

“The resulting infrastructure challenge is one that we face collectively across local authorities, the development industry, our communities and national Government.

Kent County Council is taking action to address this and find innovative solutions with the government and other partners, including private sector investors, to meet the significant funding gap.

“The solution to this challenge will not come from the public sector alone, nor can we simply expect to get all of this from the industry; rather we need real innovation in how we work with the private sector and Government to get the most out of the resources we have, whilst introducing new ways of leveraging funding and capturing value from development.

Speaking at the launch of the GIF initiative, Kent County Council Leader Paul Carter said: “The GIF is an incredibly exciting opportunity for us to set the terms of the agenda for infrastructure in Kent and Medway with Government and the private sector.

“With the GIF and our 10 point action plan, we will be working with industry, public sector and communities to create the best opportunity for quality communities across Kent and Medway into the future.”

It also recognises a funding gap of £2.01bn which, if not addressed, will impede the county’s growth.

Silver for Thanet Visitor Information Service at the 2015 Beautiful South Tourism Awards Thanet Visitor Information Service has won Silver in the ‘Visitor Information Provider of the Year’ category at the Beautiful South Tourism Awards 2015! This category was awarded to the Thanet District Council staff at a glamorous award ceremony held at the Grand Hotel in Brighton on Wednesday 2nd December. Other finalists in the category were Isle of Wight Visitor Information Centre which won Gold, East Hampshire Tourist Information Centre which won Bronze and Eastbourne Tourist Information Centre which was highly commended. The prestigious Beautiful South Tourism Awards, which are sponsored by Shepherd Neame, attracted over 120 entries this year and, in addition to the award applications, entries were judged on a combination of web searches, review sites, emails, telephone calls and a ‘secret shopper’ visit. For the finalists, judges were looking for all these elements to be ‘Excellent’ or ‘Outstanding’.

Cabinet Member for Tourism Cllr Hunter StummerSchmertzing said, “Tourism in Thanet is worth £245 million to the local economy and the district welcomes around 3.36 million visitors each year. It is therefore fantastic to see our Visitor Services team recognised in this way. The fact that this is the fifth time they have reached the award finals demonstrates that they are consistently delivering excellent customer service and being acknowledged as leader in their field. On behalf of the team and the council I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our volunteers and Visitor Ambassadors that play an important part in welcoming visitors to Thanet and providing information.” Being a finalist means that the Thanet Visitor Information Service will be part of the ‘South East Team’ in the National VisitEngland Awards in 2016, held as part of English Tourism Week (5-13 March).

Bring back the Dane Park fountain Restore the Memorial fountain in Dane park to its former working glory instead of using it as a plant pot! WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? Many people feel that we are currently depriving the local community of an amazing centrepiece to the park, and that it is also disrespectful to the memorial of the man who donated the land to the town in the first place, so that we could have a park. They want their kids to see it in its working glory like it was years ago. HISTORY Dane Park was previously farmland, then a great local resident, John Woodward, purchased it at an auction in 1895. Mr Woodward presented the land to the inhabitants of Margate to form the park, together with additional land for forming and widening the surrounding roads and six acres of building land on the south west side of the park, with the proceeds derived from the sale to be

Please mention

devoted towards the expenses of the park. Dane Park was opened by the Lord Mayor of London on June 1st, 1898. Dane Park had a substantial lake, rustic bridges, swans and peacocks, refreshment rooms and a bandstand. The fountain was erected by the corporation of Margate as a memorial to the late John Woodward, a native of Margate and a great and generous man! The lake has been filled in and the Fountain shut down and lost to the town. Many feel that it’s a shame that this memorial to a great man has now become a flowerpot!

Royal National Lifeboat Institution The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is a national charity, founded in 1824, that is funded entirely by public donation. It provides a free 24-hour, 365 day a year search and rescue service up to 100 miles out at sea from the coasts of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. There are over 230 coastal lifeboat stations, of which 2 are located in Thanet. The vast majority of lifeboat crew members and all local lifeboat station management team members and fundraisers are volunteers. Additionally, the RNLI provides a highly-trained and well-equipped beach lifeguard service to over 220 beaches around the UK, 10 of which are in Thanet. The lifeguards are on duty from May to September and many are full-time during this period with local authorities contributing towards the RNLI’s costs which helps cover wages. Fundraising is essential to maintain the RNLI’s work both nationally and locally. Every lifeboat station has its own group of fundraisers who raise money towards their station costs through a variety of events such as street and shop collections,

quiz nights, and selling souvenirs at stalls and in the RNLI’s shops. More help is always needed and if you feel that you may be able to assist, if only occasionally, please contact Michael Bon, Ramsgate and Broadstairs Lifeboat Fundraisers on 01843 861253 or Vic Champs, Margate Lifeboat Fundraisers on 07887 868174 or Barbara Sims, Ramsgate RNLI Shop on 01843 604210. The RNLI also have approved, experienced volunteer Education Presenters locally who can visit schools and youth groups, free of charge, to talk about beach and sea safety. These talks can be adapted to suit any age range and can take place at your venue or at Ramsgate Lifeboat Station. Talks on other aspects of the RNLI’s work can also be presented by arrangement. To find out more go to www.rnli.org.uk/education and/or contact John or Vanessa Ray on 01843 862612 to discuss any particular questions you may have. Talks about the work of the RNLI and/or boathouse visits are also available for adult groups, clubs and organisations at no charge (but any donation to the RNLI is always gratefully received!). To discuss such talks and/or visits contact John Ray on 01843 862612. Bookings are already being taken well into 2016.

Incredible Edible Thanet Good news!! We have recently started a community group for Thanet - Incredible Edible Thanet. Basically, it is about creating edible landscapes throughout each town in Thanet, providing free produce for the community and enriching our access to local food. It is a fun thing to do for everyone in Thanet to get involved and meet like-minded people, growing and learning more about local produce/food. There are over 200 Incredible Edible groups around the country that help and support each other with resources and plans. It’s a rapidly expanding success story and we are the first one in Kent! We speak the common language of food to make change happen by • Working together • Learning – from field to classroom to kitchen • Supporting local business

Community

Learning

From its inception, Incredible Edible sought to show how ordinary people can work together to transform their own landscapes and turned disused plots into abundant sources of healthy food. Incredible Edible believes reviving our hands-on knowledge of growing food is essential for all our futures. Here in Thanet we can utilize our own front gardens, community spaces, overgrown areas, waste plots, business shrubberies etc to create growing patches that will be edible attractions to get folk interested in joining in too. Community is at the very heart of Incredible Edible’s work. Small actions like sowing herb seeds to creating raised beds for vegetable growing – they are all as important as each other for working together for the good of our community.

Schools are natural places to start, with food plan an increasingly important part in the curriculum. We could work with schools and their gardening clubs to pass on skills and get them growing. These schools can initiate groups themselves and these then can reach out into the community. The same can be said of churches and youth groups. Of course, learning doesn’t end at the school gates, and other Incredible Edible groups across the country provide training through adult gardening clubs, training courses and workshops such as chutney making, pickling and frugal cooking. We can do this too – it just needs participation and enthusiasm from you guys to join in!

Business The business plate is nothing at all to do with sponsorship or asking others for help. It’s everything about what we as individuals can do to support a local food economy. It is mutually beneficial – getting pounds into the pockets of small local food businesses so that over time they might be able to produce more and employ more.

Thanet Hidden History HIdden away to most people is the fact that St Johns Church is over 1000 years old! The large parish church of St John the Baptist, Margate, is located on high ground about a mile inland from the coast and would have been widely visible throughout the parish before the town became more built up in the 19th and 20th centuries. The church was constructed mainly in knapped flint with some ragstone used later. St John’s was a chapel to the mother church at Minster until 1275 when it became a parish church in its own right. There may have been a church here as early as the mid 11th century although parts of the original surviving Norman church were probably constructed in the mid 12th century. The Norman church was much smaller than the current structure although it did have a north aisle of two or three bays and part of the existing north aisle and the chancel arcades date to this phase. The church was significantly extended to the west later in the 12th century and the rest of the north and south aisle were added.

18

Please mention

Some of the south and north arcades were replaced in the 13th century possibly to resolve problems with the structure which may have been the result of a fire or a collapse. The very tall northwest tower was constructed in the 13th century and the spire was added in the 14th century. In the late 15th to early 16th century, a treasury built of Kentish ragstone with a low pitched roof and crenellated parapet was built at the north east end of the church which suggests that the church had become wealthy enough to need somewhere to secure valuables. It later became the place where the churchwardens administered poor relief and as a secure store for gunpowder and weapons. The exterior of the church was heavily restored in the 1870s by the well known architect Ewan Christian.

The new Margate Local History website

Margate has a long and fascinating history as a holiday town and as an important port for travel to Calais. Much of this history has been captured in oil paintings and watercolours, in prints and engravings, and in photographs and postcards. The aim of the Margate Local History website is to make this wealth of material easily available to a wide audience. The site is designed around a series of maps of Margate, dating from 1717. Many of these maps are ‘clickable’ – they are decorated with coloured spots marking particular buildings and streets, and clicking on one of these spots opens up a picture viewer showing pictures relevant to that spot. the maps can be accessed from a menu on the left hand side of the web page. The left-hand menu also gives access to the other facilities available on the site. For those with an interest in family history there are a number of street directories and other lists dating from 1791 showing where their family members might have lived. There is a history of the storms that battered Margate over the years from 1646 to 1979, showing how the town was shaped by the damage. The history of Dreamland and its predecessor, the Hall by the Sea, is given a separate page, with many photographs of Dreamland and the old amusement park.

For those with a deeper interest in the history of the town, there is a history of Margate in the period before the start of the craze for sea bathing (13001736), and a history of the period during which the town was run by a Local Board of Health prior to its becoming a Borough (1851-1858). Shorter histories are provided of important families in Margate’s history such as the Waddington and the Jarvis families, and of odd corners of Margate’s history such as the town’s use of Triumphal Arches to greet important visitors, the strange lives of the Margate architect William Edmunds and of his daughter Christiana, the Brighton poisoner, and the role played by Margate in many early London Pantomimes.

The Amy Johnson Eight years ago, Jane Priston set out on a mission to bring the memory of aviation pioneer Amy Johnson back to life in her final resting place of Herne Bay.

she had always felt like this was nothing more than a far off dream. However, after receiving a personal recommendation, Jane got in touch with artist Stephen Melton at Meltdowns Fine Art Production Studio in Ramsgate to discuss whether or not this dream could in fact become a reality.

This inspirational woman, who died serving her country in 1941, defied social expectations and became an icon of her time after her daring solo flight from London to Australia in a Gipsy Moth biplane in 1930 - just one year after being awarded her pilot’s licence.

She explained that she wanted a life-size Amy to stand among the crowd as a lasting tribute to her, to keep her memory alive. After some discussion, Jane realised that the bronze statue was no longer a dream; she had found a team with the skill and resources to bring her idea to life, and at this point she knew it was achievable, so she commissioned Meltdowns to begin the process of making the sculpture.

Jane Priston’s dream was to inspire a new generation by bringing the story of Amy Johnson back to Herne Bay, and in 2014 an information board about this great woman was unveiled on the seafront. But this was by no means the conclusion of the project…it had always been Jane’s ambition to install a bronze statue of Amy in Herne Bay, but

24

Stephen Melton told me that the design process has very much been a collaborative effort. They are “continuing the ageless tradition of figurative sculpture, and we really found it important to

Project depict her, not standing static like a monument to a Royal, but actually physically moving and being dynamic, interacting with the environment, because that’s what Amy did”. He continued, “she was a go-getter, and the narrative that we wanted to employ was her interacting with the crowd and the environment, looking at the sky and assessing the conditions, making the decision as to whether, that day, she was going to fly or not”. It was very important to Jane that this was an interactive tribute to Amy so that a new generation could get up close to her and be inspired. The bronze will be embellished with quotes from Amy Johnson, and Jane told me that there may even be some hidden ones so that people have to really search and get up close to find them. “We didn’t want her to be elevated on a plinth like a god, but amongst the crowd, because that’s who she was; a middle class girl from the North who did exceptional things”. “Amy was a real people’s person, and she hated the celebrity side of what she did. She had to embrace that just to be able to fund what she wanted to do. She was a woman; she couldn’t fly for a job - it just wasn’t possible - so she had to play the game, but she detested that side of it. She just wanted to disappear in the crowd, so when Stephen and I started speaking, the first thing I knew was that I wanted her on the ground so that when Herne Bay is busy, she almost disappears”. The statue is currently at the maquette stage, but this will shortly be modelled into a full size clay sculpture, and then the final stage will be casting it into bronze. In order to get to this stage, Jane has worked hard to obtain funding which has largely been from members of the public and donations from local businesses.

A The project still requires some additional

funding before the grand unveiling by HRH Prince Michael of Kent on 17th September, so if you would like to donate any amount, big or small, please contact Jane through www.amyjohnsonhernebay.com

Recycle Now! Thanet District Council is taking part in a national campaign with a number of other councils across Kent to increase recycling in the county. The campaign, designed by Recycle Now, is asking residents to think about what they can recycle from the different rooms around their homes, such as the kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom, starting with plastic items. Products from the bathroom, including plastic shampoo and conditioner bottles, shower gel containers, liquid soap bottles, and bleach and bathroom cleaner containers can all be recycled, but are often overlooked as we focus our attention on kitchen items. Later in the year the focus will move onto recycling paper and card items, followed by metal and glass in the spring. Cabinet Member for Operational Services Cllr Suzanne Brimm says: ‘‘Recycling has such an important positive impact on our environment, which is why we are working in partnership with other councils across Kent to encourage residents to recycle more. You can make a real difference by recycling plastic from around your home.’’

A

Here are a few handy tips to follow when recycling plastic containers and bottles in your blue lidded bin or blue box: • Rinse and wash containers and bottles to remove any leftover residue • Remove the trigger spay and pump dispenser tops and place them in your black bin • Squash and flatten containers and bottles so they take up less space in your recycling bin

The council is working towards its goal of increasing Thanet’s recycling to 50%, but can only do this with help from residents. Residents unsure about what goes in specific bins or who want to check a collection day should visit www. thanet.gov.uk/recycling or call the Recycle for Thanet phoneline on 01843 577115. For more information please visit the council’s website at www.thanet.gov.uk for more local advice on recycling or the Recycle Now campaign at www.recyclenow.com/ are-you-recycling-everything-you-can

Anything is Possible Broadstairs based singer / songwriter Trevor Harper has had a life changing year, and has realised his life-long dream of recording and releasing his very own album of all original music. Halo’s takes you on his journey, both personal and spiritual, in his search for himself, concluding with the defining track Singer.

Trevor’s background was not in music; for many years he worked as an engineer, but after organising the “Songwriter’s Den” at a Broadstairs pub - a platform for local artists to get their own original songs heard he found inspiration to finally put his words to music, and produce the album that he had always dreamed of making. With the help of some local friends and musicians including Joe Inkpen and Graham Nibbs, Trevor managed to write, record and produce his first album, which is now available online, and playing on internet radio in 42 countries worldwide. When speaking to Trevor about Halo’s, it is clear that his ambition and determination is a major driving force behind the success of the album. He told me, “in today’s music industry, anybody can do it; you just have to have the belief in yourself and the drive to do it”, and furthermore, with the internet making music widely and easily available to people all over the world, “a million album sales is not impossible”.

But it hasn’t been an easy journey for Trevor. With technology making it possible for more and more people to record and produce their own music, breaking into the industry and differentiating himself from the crowd has been his biggest challenge. “You can produce an excellent album and put it in the hands of someone you believe will take it to the stars and back, and you can find out that it hasn’t even got off the ground. You need to be able to find the right people who can pick your album out of the dirt and who can throw it up there. I suppose I did get lucky. I found people that I can work with, and those people got my album onto Spotify, iTunes, GooglePlay and Amazon”. Halo’s has a very personal and intimate feeling to it, and the listener is taken on a journey of exploration, just as Trevor went on when making the album. Through the personal challenges that he has faced

throughout his life, Trevor has managed to produce a beautiful album, with the philosophy that “anything is possible - if anybody takes anything from the album, that what I’d want it to be”. Following the success of Halo’s, trevor is currently in the process of writing his new album, and we can look forward to the release of his new single What’s Your Name later on this year. He also hopes to be able to help more local artists “make their dreams a reality” and “give other people the opportunity I’ve had to get their music heard all around the world”.

Working out a repayment It’s crucial to work out the total cost of the credit you’re taking out, including interest payments, and not just the amount you’re borrowing or how much you can afford to pay every month. Taking the time to work out the full cost of any borrowing lets you plan your finances and ensure that you really can afford it.

What affects your borrowing costs How much you’ll pay to borrow money depends on how much you need and how quickly you plan to repay it. For example, if you want to borrow a small amount over a short period of time with a low interest rate, you may well pay very little interest (or none at all if you use a credit card charging 0% interest). On the other hand, borrowing a large amount of money over a long time will cost you more. In general, use the APR to compare products. The lower the APR the better, but also look at how much it will cost overall. This will usually be more for a longer-term loan even if the APR is less, and will show as the total amount payable. Find out more on deciding the best type of credit for you.

Borrowing options Let’s look at an example. John needs to borrow £1,000 to replace his old boiler. He gets a quote from a big energy company for the boiler and the installation, including paying back the cost over two years. However, when he reads the contract he notices that if he takes out their credit for two years he will pay more than £300 in interest.

plan for your borrowing John looks around at other options. As he has a good credit rating, he considers: • Taking out a credit card with an introductory interest-free period of 15 months on new purchases, or • Applying for a personal loan with an interest rate of 10% that he can pay back over two years

This is how much John may have to repay each month and overall: Option

Energy company credit agreement over two years

In the end, John takes a look at his monthly budget and decides that he can afford to take out the credit card and pay the extra £10.76 each month to avoid having to pay any interest. It means he will have paid off the balance in 15 months and he won’t have been charged interest. John will only save money because he knows he can make the payments within the 15 months. If you don’t think you would be able to do that, a credit card could cost you more.

may mean you’re able to take out a much cheaper form of credit. It also highlights the importance of shopping around for credit and not just taking the first product you are offered. Always spend some time shopping around for credit. Use comparison websites to look at different deals. Be aware of any extra charges or fees. All loans should tell you how much you will pay back overall, including any interest.

What this table shows is the difference in repayment plans over different periods of time and how being able to pay a little more each month

Things to do TADSAD

Thanet Colts

TADSAD is a voluntary-run organisation which is celebrating 30 years of running Thanet & District Sport Association for Disability. The Friday club is mixed sport and circus sport to suit a range of disabilities of secondary school age and up.

Founded in 1992, Thanet Colts Football Club has gone from strength to strength, now boasting 32 teams, ranging from U7s boys to seniors, and from U9s girls to ladies.

Our Archery section is on Wednesday’s and it has been running for 17 years. All of our team leaders are trained, as are our coaches, and again this is for secondary school age and up. The Friday club is an open door “just come along”. There is a £2.50 fee to come along to the club. Please see Fay for opening times. Wednesday evening has a waiting list, so to try this sport to see if you are able to manage it you can try it any week at 7.45 during the break, and you will be assessed as suitable for the waiting list. Two of our members have been coming for 30 years so there is an extensive age range. We run a scheme of badges for scores throughout the year, finishing with a fun Christmas shoot and a Christmas party. Archery is £3.50. We have suitable bows and arrows, and some choose eventually to buy their own. We do compete at other venues in the year, all for fun. We run both clubs from the Ramsgate Sports and Leisure Centre.

The club is run solely by volunteers, many of whom are mums and dads giving up their time to help and encourage boys and girls to play football. There are many roles behind the scenes that are fulfilled, again by volunteers, without whom the club would not be able to function. We are also purely funded by money raised from our sponsors and subs. As the club has evolved so have the requirements for managers, and all of our managers are now qualified and police checked. In 2014, Thanet Colts was awarded The F.A. Charter Standard club of the year by Kent F.A. - something the club has worked very hard for and we are all extremely proud of. We now use several venues around Margate, including Hartsdown Park, Dane Park, Hartsdown Academy and Garlinge Recreational ground. Some of our players have gone on to have trials at a professional level and some have even gone on to play for professional clubs. As a club we also encourage our players to see the other side of the game, many going on referee courses, all paid for by the club. The club has just launched our new website, so if you are thinking of joining the club for a trial, or you are interested in volunteering at Thanet Colts, please visit www.thanetcolts.uk for more information.

Things to do Thanet Community Support Partnership (TCSP) TCSP is line managed by Thanet Volunteer Bureau in Ramsgate. It is made up of a group of organisations who have come together to support older people in their own homes. The services provided include volunteer befrienders, assisted shopping, dog walking, information and guidance and much more. If you have a few hours to spare, you can help make a local person’s life a little bit easier. For example, we have a Broadstairs man who is blind and needs someone with a car to take him and his guide dog out for walks. So if you need a little exercise, like dogs and would enjoy a little jaunt, why not let us know? Other people are just lonely and would really benefit from a regular visitor popping in for a chat - maybe to put the world to rights! This can make a world of difference to someone who never sees anyone from day to day. If you are interested in getting involved or know someone who needs our help, you can call Louise or Fran on 01843 597115 (Mon-Fr 9am-3pm) or email tcspc@hotmail.co.uk or visit our website: thanetcommunitysupport.org.

It’s behind you….. Why not join the Kent Police Pantomime Group at the Theatre Royal in Margate, 18 - 20 February? The charitable gang will be performing their 18th pantomime, The Miss-adventures of Robin Hood, in aid of Parkinson’s UK and other good causes. The serving and retired police officers from Thanet, have been able to raise many thousands of pounds for local and national charities over the years and Parkinson’s UK are delighted to have their support again in 2016. Scripts written by Ken Pickett, and directed by Alan Davison are bound to have the family in stitches, so please do support this event. To book tickets please contact The Box Office: 01843 292795

Stuck for something to do during January and February? How’s your trivia? What better way to see out the long dark winter nights than by hosting a Quiz Night for Parkinson’s UK. It’s a great way to raise both funds and awareness and we provide you with everything you need! Download a pack now at www.parkinsons.org.uk/quiznight or email fundraising@parkinsons.org.uk

Great News for Westbrook Bowls Club and Westbrook Sport England “Inspired Facilities” have given a generous grant of nearly £58,000 to Westbrook Bowls Club. Sport England invests National Lottery and Exchequer Funding in projects that will grow and sustain participation in grass roots sport and create opportunities for people to excel at their chosen sport. This grant will enable the club to modernise, adapt and slightly enlarge its aging pavilion, improve the surrounds to the bowling green and provide additional equipment to cater for a variety of sports, particularly during the Winter months. Westbrook bowls club is hoping that the community at large, particually youngsters, will avail themselves of the opportunities which it will be able to offer. Older people, even if they do not wish to bowl outdoors, could take part in table-tennis, short mat bowling and other activities which the club is intending to provide. Some of the grant from Sport England “Inspired Facilities” will be used to make the club-house and surrounding areas more accessible for those with physical difficulties, in particular, by providing disabled access on to the bowling green and resurfacing the uneven tarmac surrounding the green and entrance to the club-house. The enlargement of the club-house will provide improved changing rooms, disabled toilets and a larger communal space to facilitate a greater variety of indoor activities. Since taking over from T.D.C the responsibility for maintaining the club-house and bowling green, members of the club, at their own expense, have done much work to improve the quality of the green and its immediate surrounds and it is now recognised to be one of the best greens in the area. The grant from Sport England will enable the club to be more attractive to the local community.

Joe walsh, Westbrook Bowls Club President said: “ Westbrook bowls club is a strong local club always looking to attract more members, particularly youngsters. Our project will be opening up our club and giving people the opportunity to play bowls competitively or for fun, or to partake in other activities. We’re delighted to have received Sport England funding to make it all happen.” Joel Brookfield, Sport England’s regional Lead for South England said : “If Community sports clubs want to attract and retain participants, they need to be able to offer quality facilities for everyone. The improvements to Westbrook bowls clubs facilities will be welcomed by regular users and those who are new to bowling”. The members intend to continue, as in the past, working together in a friendly and harmonious manner for the benefit of all the club. Whilst outdoor bowling in the Summer will be the principle sport, the club hope that the improved opportunities and facilities will attract new bowling members, youngsters and non-bowlers including the less mobile. Hopefully, the work will be completed by April this year, as a result of the generosity of Sport England “Inspired Facilities”.
