COMMUNITY MAGAZINE Spring 2014
Produced by Tupton Parish Council for the Community
1st Tupton Beavers
It’s all about having fun!
Message from the Chair Cllr. Peter Frakes Welcome to the second edition of our, or should I say your, new magazine. To emphasise that it is “yours” it has been re-titled Tupton Community Magazine because we intend it to be a showcase for the community and the many voluntary groups to advertise and expand the magnificent work that they do across all age groups in the village. As someone who is involved in the voluntary sector, especially addressing loneliness and isolation, I was delighted that the Parish Council supported the St John’s Church initiative to provide a Christmas Day dinner for those who would otherwise have been alone on that special day. If that initiative were to be repeated and enlarged this year I am sure that we would again consider support. We have already taken the decision to continue our support for the excellent St John’s luncheon club which is held on the third Tuesday every month in the Village Hall. The Parish Council, for the second year running, has held the Parish Precept (our budget) at £99,000 despite rising costs and improvements. This provides employment for three full time, two part time and we are seeking a third part time weekend employee. We have a responsibility to maintain playgrounds, recreational areas, bus shelters and bench seating. We provide and service dog waste bins, litter bins, winter grit bins and a variety of other functions. None of your Parish Councillors are paid for their Parish responsibilities. Last year the Parish Council introduced the concept of Participatory Budgeting which Tupton Parish Council Magazine
asks the community to submit schemes, up to £20,000, that provide new or expand existing facilities for the benefit of the community. Importantly it also gives you the opportunity to have YOUR say on whether we use YOUR money to finance any of these schemes. Unfortunately only one submission this year fitted the criteria, of being a new or expanding facility, but under the terms of Participatory Budgets the proposed £15,000 scheme was presented for your comments on our website and in the Village Hall on Thursday 20th March. Subsequently the Council were able to approve the scheme. The exercise will be repeated again this year but instead of requiring fully priced detailed schemes the Parish Council will accept broad outlined schemes that can be developed for presentation to you before the end of the financial year 2014/15, so “don your thinking caps” and put pen to paper! Best wishes to you all and I leave you to enjoy YOUR magazine.

Councillor B Wright Since elected in May of last year to represent the people of Tupton I’ve received many communications concerning: Speeding, parked cars, road conditions, street lighting, grass verges and footpaths. Some have been addressed whilst others are ongoing and still under investigation. In recent months the County Council initiated a Members’ casework system. This enables constituents and their councillor to report their concerns to the relevant departments more efficiently, keep a record on file and feed back updates. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me directly or through the Council Contact Centre. Recent reports have been
concerned with street lighting around the Hall Walk/ Ivanhoe Close area, I have visited a couple of times with Parish Councillors and Environmental Services are still trying to resolve the problem. Other street lighting problems have been reported on Hagg Hill; information received to date indicates that there is a problem with the electricity company’s power supply cable. WesternPower Distribution are aware and dealing with the matter. With the community leadership fund I have also been able to support Tupton RUFC and Jumping Jacks Parent and Toddler group at St Johns Church. Currently I’m processing a further six applications to help local groups in Tupton and will update in future editions of the magazine.
St John’s Church Christmas Meal St John’s Church hosted a Christmas day lunch for anybody in the community who wanted to come along. There was a small response to this but it is safe to say all those who attended had a thoroughly great time. Great food, good company and a chance to share together this very special day. I would like to thank all those who came, all those who gave up their time to help and a special thank you to those who donated food and money which enabled this lunch to take place. We would hope to do this again next year and look forward to that.

1st Tupton Scout Group - The Beavers 1st Tupton Beaver Colony are the youngest members of the Scout Group. Beavers are boys and girls aged 6-8. Scouting is about fun, challenges and adventure. Since September we have built a monster from rubbish, for our imagination badge. We had a visit from a police dog handler to learn about our community and those who work in it. A key principle of scouting is a duty to others. In November we made poppies, learnt about Remembrance and attended the Tupton Service of Remembrance. We also had fun having a fancy dress party and raising money for Children in Need. We joined in the carol service attended by all the Beaver colonies in Chesterfield. Our own Christmas celebrations included visiting the Christmas lights in Chesterfield, singing carols around the Christmas tree and culminated in supper at McDonalds.
10
This year we are participating in a county challenge to ‘visit’ several countries in each continent, learning new skills. So far we have built miniature rafts, learnt about things that float and being safe around water. We are keen on campfire singing, enjoy lots of games and being part of the scouting family. There is a waiting list for youngsters who’d like to join. If your child is interested, or if you are interested in helping as a leader/assistant, please contact any leader in the group, or call me.

As always the Management Committee, elected at each AGM, continue to seek funding and, if successful, will wish to organize a Spring/Summer outing again this year. We are proud of our intergenerational work with local schools and are seeking members who can share their skills. In return the children can explain the “mysteries” of computers, internet and mobile phones to our members. There are also plans to create a school memorial garden to commemorate the centenary of the First World War. We aim to combat Loneliness and Isolation by getting people away from the same four walls for a few hours in the company of friends old and new.

NHS 111 NHS 111 is a new service that has been introduced to make it easier for you to access local NHS healthcare services. It provides one, easy-to-remember number that is free to call from landlines or mobiles. Call 111 if… • you need medical help fast but it’s not a 999 emergency • you think you need to go to A&E or need another NHS urgent care service • you don’t know who to call or you don’t have a GP to call • you need health information or reassurance about what to do next
What happens when you call NHS 111? When you call 111, a trained advisor will ask you questions to find out what’s wrong, give you medical advice and direct you to someone who can help you, like an out-of-hours doctor or a community nurse. If the advisor thinks your condition is more serious, they will direct you to hospital or send an ambulance. If you do not speak English, tell the advisor what language you want to speak and they will get you an interpreter. You can call NHS 111 any time of the day or night, 365 days a year.

Jumping Jacks Parent and Toddler Group ‘Jumping Jacks’ Parent and Toddler Group meet on Friday mornings between 9.00am and 11am in St. Johns Church Hall. We currently have 14 children on our register but this fluctuates due to children becoming eligible for nursery and new babies being added. The children are given refreshments, a bowl of fresh fruit and sugar free juice, halfway through the session. Parents have unlimited coffee or tea and biscuits available during the morning. We make a small charge of £1 to cover these costs. We are an extremely friendly, happy outgoing group and are non-profit making. We occasionally have a fund-raising event to raise money for equipment.

Tupton Local History Society Our December 2013 event was a great success. Mr. Richard Booth of the Ashover Light Railway Society presented an informative and amusing illustrated talk about the Ashover Light Railway. Many of the audience had memories of the old railway. Local resident Ann Holmes recounted her memories of riding on the Ashover Light Railway shortly before it closed. On Bank Holidays, the Clay Cross Company, owners of the railway, put on excursion trains from Clay Cross to Ashover, where families would picnic or dine at the Rainbow’s End café. Some of the picnickers would just ask for hot water at the café to make their own tea! The railway was primarily meant for the transport of minerals from the Ashover quarries to Clay Cross works, with passenger services starting in 1925. The bulk of the railway was closed in 1950 and all locomotives, rolling stock, track etc were sold off. Very little remains of the route today, but probably the most obvious relic that can be seen is the western abutment of the Pirelli bridge over the A61 just north of Clay Cross . Other minor remains can be seen all along the route if you care to explore. There is also one of the original passenger carriages at the Midland railway Centre at Butterley. The Ashover Light Railway Society would like to open up at least part of the route and are working towards that end. See www.alrs.org.uk 18

Lest We Forget… This year we will be commemorating 100 years of the start of the First World War, on 28 July 2014. Tupton, like many other towns and villages throughout the country, did not go unscathed and 42 local residents were killed in action as part of the conflicts. We remember these individuals, together with those local residents that were killed in the Second World War, at the Remembrance Sunday Service each year. In the Service this year, we would like to bring life to the names that are read out by providing additional information about these people such as where they lived, how old they were, what they did for a living and any other interesting facts.
That is where you can help. Are you related to any of those people, do you know stories or have information that will help us put together a profile of each of these brave individuals? The following information would be most helpful: Date of birth Any home addresses known Service number Service details Date of death Place of death Where buried (if known) Photographs of the individual Family details Living relatives (in the village?)
b If you have any information about any individuals killed in the First or Second World War, or indeed as part of the enemy action over the village, please contact David Parmley on 07578 524056 or via email d.parmley@btinternet.com A full list of the fallen is available on the Council’s website www.tuptonpc.org.uk

Grass Verge Damage Your help is needed to stop grass verges from being destroyed… Parking on grass verges throughout the Parish is becoming a persistent problem, which is causing damage and making the area look very unsightly. Not only does parking on the grass verges cause damage but it can also obstruct the highway and prevent pedestrians and wheel chair users from accessing roads and footways if there is no other pathway. Verge parking can also cause a hazard to other motorists especially
if the vehicle is parked on a bend, narrow road or junction. The Parish Council has received numerous complaints about vehicles parking on the grass verges along Queen Victoria Road, Northside and Davenport Road. These areas will be monitored over the coming months and the Council will be working with other agencies to try and prevent further damage occurring.
It’s your community and we need your help to protect it by avoiding parking on grass verges or driving over them and discouraging other people from doing the same.

Tupton Rugby Club Clubhouse dream moves ever closer As readers will be aware, the village Rugby Club has been leading a project to secure changing facilities on the Recreation Ground to support the playing of support and community activities. The last few weeks have seen a number of steps forward with two funding awards being announced, bringing us very close to our target and the delivery of the Tender to a number of construction companies who will deliver the building for us. Attention is now being turned to the fit out of the Clubhouse as we look to fund chairs, tables, pots pans and the like. Two initiatives have been announced that are open to everyone to get involved with and help us push on to achieve our dream – a facility that will support sport in our community for years to come! Firstly we are operating a “buy-a-brick” scheme to support our fundraising initiative with an opportunity to offer you and your family/friends the chance to be part of this fantastic development, and have your mark remain on the building for years to come. The main entrance to the Clubhouse area in the development is flanked by two blank
walls that we would like to proudly display the bricks purchased. This is the perfect opportunity to be a part of aiding the fundraising to build the Clubhouse. The bricks will be Charcoal in colour and have gold engraving on them. There is a maximum of 2 lines of 16 characters, inc. spaces per brick. The price per brick will be just £25. To order your brick simply contact Phil Harrison by email at tuptonrufc@live.co.uk or pick up a form at one of our events. Secondly a date for your diaries - on Saturday 21st June 2014 we are organising a family day with sponsored fun walk/run and cycle ride. Planning is at an early stage but the event will be held on the Rec. and we are keen to involve as many people in our community as possible and therefore the event is open to all. You can keep up to date with details of this event at www.tuptonrufc.com
Tupton Cricket Club
You may not be aware but the village now has its own Cricket Club! The first few games were played on the Recreation Ground last summer and we are looking to play even more this summer. If you would like to get involved as a Player (we really do welcome all abilities!), Official or Supporter then please contact Shaun Grocutt on 07790 931988 to register your details and learn more about Tupton CC
