Messages from the Chair Retiring…but it’s business as usual at your Parish Council This May I informed my council colleagues of my decision not to seek re-election at the Parish Elections next May. By then I will be entering my seventies and my voluntary workload has increased significantly over the past year with the Chairmanship of the Derbyshire Older Persons Advisory Group and Derbyshire Trusted Befriending Network, Executive membership of East Midlands Later Life Forum and Age Action

Alliance Loneliness & Isolation Working Group in London. The past three years have seen significant advances in the Parish and throughout that time I have enjoyed the full support of the Vice Chair Cathy Goodyer and all your Councillors. Cathy will replace me as Chair for the final ten months of this term and, as a former Parish Council Chair, brings her wealth of experience to the position. My very best wishes to you all. Cllr Peter Frakes

Your new Chair of the Parish Council I am delighted to be elected as your Parish Council Chair for the final period of this election term. It has been a privilege to serve as Vice Chair to Peter Frakes and I would like to pay tribute Peter for all his hard work as Chair of the Council over the last couple of years during which there have been a number of developments. I have lived in Tupton now for 18 years. I brought up my daughter here and I feel it is a wonderful village to bring up a family in. I do feel that Tupton is a special community. There can’t be many places of our size that have so many

active community groups, all committed to improving the lives of people who live in the village. As your new Chair of the Parish Council I pledge to continue to do my utmost to serve your interests to the best of my ability. Please do not hesitate to get in contact with the Council or directly with myself if you have an issue that needs addressing. The Council meets on the third Thursday of the month in the Committee Room of the Village Hall and the first part of the meeting is allocated to members of the public to raise issues with the Council. You can also raise issues at any time directly with me on 07867 538287. Best wishes, Cathy Goodyer

Lest We Forget Your village needs you Currently, a project is underway to trace the details of the 65 individuals listed on Tupton’s War Memorial. This project is designed to tie in with all the special acts of remembrance taking place this year, to mark 100 years since the outbreak of WWI. The project is making good progress, however the available information sources have not produced full results. Therefore we are asking the village to see if there is any memory, or information of the following people We have two listed soldiers of whom we can find no details: • WH Hill from WWI • D Green from WWII We have two listed soldiers whom we believe we have identified, but can find no service records: • Fred Elliott born 1891 in Tupton, son of Henry & Margaret Elliott of Woodside Cottages • Alfred Ewing born 1870 in Tupton, son of John & Hannah Ewing of Queen Victoria Road

HIPCEA is a Derbyshire Trusted Trader, Tupton-based provider of

Energy Performance Certificates (EPC)

Home Inspections Property Condition & Energy Assessments

We have one soldier of whom we have details and a service record, but cannot link him to Tupton: • Sydney John Alfred Scammell born in Portsmouth in 1897, son of Walter Quinton and Hannah Matilda Scammell, from Birmingham We are also looking for any information, and photographs, regarding the eleven parishioners who were killed in the bombing raid on Tupton in March 1941 We have sourced some photographs from the Derbyshire Times archives for many of Tupton’s 65 remembered people, however they are of extremely poor quality. All the information gathered so far, can be viewed on the Tupton Local History Society website.

Village Website Tupton now has its own website tuptonvillagederbyshire.com One of the ideas behind the website is to highlight all the events happening in Tupton. So instead of going to different websites you can find them all on one and then you can get more information by going directly to the hosting website. There is a page for each month so there is no excuse not to know what is going on and put the event in your diary. However, the website can only work effectively if those who are organising events let me know. You can send details via the website. The website is also an opportunity for local businesses to advertise their product or services. There is no charge for advertising providing they are based in Tupton. If you think that there is something that is of interest to the people of Tupton please let me know. Colin Morton

1st Tupton Scout Group - why do we do it? This is a question we have probably asked ourselves on many occasions over the years. Usually after another night of little sleep at camp, or sleepover… or a particularly boisterous meeting. So why? The answer must be something to do with the enormous amount of fun we get out of being involved with Scouting. Be it with the younger end, the Beavers (6-8 years), the Cubs (8- 10 ½) or Scouts (10 ½ -14). Watching the kids take up new challenges and grow as young people is rewarding in its self, but also the challenges we take on as leaders and helpers or committee members. 1st Tupton Scout Group is a thriving group of 81 members; this includes the young people,

10

Tupton Parish Council Magazine

leaders and helpers; there is also a committee consisting of elected members, our treasurer and secretary. The group’s mini bus and premises constantly need attention and upkeep. We have working days to paint, refurbish and tidy the hut. Then there is the continuous need to fundraise to ensure that we have enough funds to keep these things in a good condition, and are able to buy other resources such as camping equipment or fund some of the activities. Some of our committee and leaders have had the challenge to cater at our family camp at Chatsworth, when we sell programmes and litter pick for the Country fair. Feeding over a hundred in a field is indeed a challenge. All this may sound like hard work, and sometimes it is a challenge to juggle work and home life with scouting, but the rewards of working within this team make it all worthwhile. Leaders can undertake a variety of training and learn new skills (archery, first aid are examples). Our young leaders (over 14 years) find plenty to put on their CV or university application forms. There is also the fun. Being involved with a team of adults, there is a lot of humour and occasional social fuddle. It certainly isn’t all work and no play!

So, why do we do it? We enjoy it. If you would like to join the Group as a leader, helper or become involved with the committee, please give me a call.

50 Plus Forum 50+ Forums are supported by Derbyshire County Council but are totally independent and run by local people creating a powerful voice for people 50 and over. We get involved, take action and influence services. We are about enhancing your life and the lives of others.

What’s in it for you? Information. Choice. Opportunity. Fun and Friendship. Our Annual General Meeting was held at the North Wingfield Forum on 29 May at which the current Management Committee were re-elected. This was followed by an afternoon of entertainment provided by the Penny Bun duo. It was also a very special occasion with our most senior member Mrs G. Bishton of Holmewood celebrating her 100th birthday with a cake and card signed by all the members present. The Management Committee were pleased to announced the receipt of a donation of £350 from County Councillors Kevin Gillott and Brian Wright which will go towards a Summer outing for members again this year. A very big thank you to both of them. Funding has also been secured from Derbyshire County Council to part fund a Memorial Garden at Sharley Park Primary School to commemorate the centenary of the First World War. Once again we are grateful for the continued support of Gill Clarke DCC Intergenerational Officer. We 14

are also indebted to Apollo Contractors Ltd for their very generous contribution of materials and labour that have made this project possible. An opening date for the garden will be announced soon. Our next Open Forum will be at Tupton Village Hall on 20 August from 1.30pm until 4pm. Free drinks and light refreshments will be served. We aim to combat loneliness and isolation by getting people away from the same four walls for a few hours in the company of friends old and new.

Safer Neighbourhoods It’s that time of the year again when we all want to be outdoors making the best of it, but the summer months can mean more opportunities for crimes to take place. By following some simple steps you can help to protect your home and belongings and still make the most of the summer. Gates, fencing, walls or hedges should not be more than 1 metre high so that the front of your property can be seen by passers-by. Rear gardens should have fencing at least six feet high. Trellis work on top of fencing panels is not only decorative; it is also difficult to climb over as it breaks easily and noisily. Garden gates should be at least the same height and strength as your fencing with hinges securely attached to the gateposts. Locks/padlocks should be of good quality with concealed screws. Garden sheds should be kept locked with a padlock or mortise deadlock as they often contain tools suitable for

b

breaking into your home and valuable equipment such as lawnmowers. Secure garden furniture and wheelie bins so that they cannot be used to climb on to gain access to upstairs windows. Install security lights to illuminate your garden - they can help deter thieves. Mark your metal items with weatherproof marking kits, etching or engraving. Make sure any metals are not left in an easily-accessible location. Did you know that the Police offer free crime prevention advice for your home? Further safety advice can been found at www.derbyshire.police.uk/Safety-advice

A general reminder! If you see any suspicious activity don’t worry about ‘disturbing the police’, your efforts can make a real difference. PCSO 12735 Turner and PC 3358 Sunderland

Tupton Film Club Tupton Film Club is now entering its third year and runs from September to May, meeting on the first Wednesday of the month at St John’s Church, Queen Victoria Road, New Tupton. Meetings start at 7pm, with a short interval part way through when drinks and home-made refreshments are on offer. A small raffle also takes place. Members voted for the programme last year which started off with Hope Springs, followed by Song for Marion, Anna Karenina, Lincoln, Life of Pi, The Impossible and Quartet. Members choice in February was Les Misérables. During Lent we also showed The Bible over five weeks which was very well attended. Last year we had 100% increase in members from 20 to 40. We had 26 guests throughout the year and 7 of them decided to become members. An added bonus is that members can also borrow DVDs once they have been shown at no extra cost.

Come along and join the growing numbers to enjoy a completely new cinematic experience! To commemorate the centenary of WW1 there is a special showing of All Quiet on the Western Front on 6 August at 7pm. This film is being shown as part of Tupton’s remembrance of ‘those who gave their lives so that we might live.’ Everyone is welcome as this is a free showing, and not part of the membership.

bDetails of films chosen by members to be shown in the coming year, together with information about membership fees, can be found on our website www.tuptonfilmclub.co.uk or by contacting the Erica Morton on 01246 204863

Tupton Local History Society We have hosted two events to date in 2014 On Thursday 6 March 2014, “History of Queen’s Park” was presented by local historian Janet Murphy. The park was opened to the public in 1893 having been proposed in 1886 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in 1887. This interesting and informative talk was presented courtesy of the Friends of Queen’s Park.

On Thursday 5 June 2014, “North Wingfield”, a look at our neighbouring community, was presented by John Robinson, a local ex-coal miner and historian. John is a very knowledgeable and amusing presenter. He covered not only North Wingfield, but also the surrounding area including Tupton, especially the important coal mining heritage of our area.

Our upcoming events are as follows Thursday 11 September 2014

Thursday 4 December 2014

The Great War - A Tommy’s Life

Tupton Village from the 1920s

A commemoration of the First World War from a soldier’s perspective, with Mr Scott Knowles, a Great War re-enactor. Mr Knowles will be showing uniform and other items of a soldier’s kit and food as well as giving an illustrated talk. Quiz Night and Carnival Royals Tupton Events Committee hold a Quiz Night and announce new Carnival Royals for 2014 On Saturday 29 March, Tupton’s Village Hall on Green Lane was busy with excited children, their nervous parents, and quiz lovers on Saturday evening, for Tupton Events Committee’s famous Family Quiz Night. This event was to help raise funds to cover costs of the 12th Annual Tupton Carnival, set for 26 July 2014. The quiz covered various different topics, so there was something for everyone, and there was much good natured rivalry amongst the teams. Cost of entry included a chip

butty supper, there was a raffle during the interval, and several prizes were handed out to lucky winners. However the major event of the evening was the announcement and introduction of Tupton’s new Carnival Queen and Royal Princesses by the outgoing Queen, Amber Wilbourn. performing her various duties as Carnival Queen. She then announced the names of the successful applicants for Princess attendants. These were: Lucy Gordon, aged 5, Chloe Burton aged 12, and Skye Fullwood aged 8. Each came forward as their names were called. Amber then pronounced the new Queen as Miss Natalie Broadhead, aged 15. She also came forward to be welcomed to the group for photo opportunities. All the girls were presented with a gift of a necklet, to be worn with their new Carnival dresses. Peter Wardlow, Chairman of the Committee thanked everyone for their support, and reminded everyone again of the very strict protocol within which an independent recorder works in the decision process. This ensures fairness for everyone, and the process is open to the public to watch. The Royals are chosen on their individual merits, having completed their own application form, and taking their ages into account. This is a difficult process because of the very high standard of the applications. Commiserations were offered to the unsuccessful applicants, with a plea

to try again next year. On Sunday, 22 June at 3pm, Tupton Events Committee held their first Midsummer Brass Band Tea Party in Tupton Village Hall, to raise funds for the Carnival. The tables were decked out with coloured cloths, and delicious cakes and teas were served during the interval. Award winning Shirebrook Miners Welfare Unison Band, a great favourite in Tupton, again gave a magnificent performance, with many singalong tunes and favourite musical pieces, and including solo performances by several of the band members in turn. Further information on our concerts and fundraising evenings is available on our website at www.tuptonevents.net Don’t forget the 12th Annual Tupton Carnival and Procession on Saturday, 26 July. The Procession starts as usual from the Ford Street play area, at 1pm, and the Carnival is being held this year on the Primary School Playing Field, off Nethermoor Road, Tupton. Sheila Greaves
