Message from the Chair As we approach the end of the year and the Christmas season, I would like to take the opportunity of thanking all voluntary groups in the village: the sports, dance and exercise clubs, the Brownies, Scouts, the Village Hall Committee, the Events Committee, the Churches, and the many specialist clubs and groups for all their hard work during the year. You really make a difference to this village and make it the vibrant, compassionate and caring place that it is! Elsewhere in this magazine are some photos of the very successful Carnival the Events Committee organized in July. And there are a number of events to mark the Autumn and Christmas Season coming up that I encourage members of the local community to attend – the Chapel players performances from 25th29th November at Old Tupton Methodist Church, the Tupton Christmas Market in the Village Hall on the 30th November, a Musical Christmas evening (with a bit of jazz!) at St John’s Church on the 13th December, Carols by candlelight at St John’s Church on 14th December, a Family Christmas party on the 20th December in the Village Hall, a Christmas Party for the over 60s on the 23rd December in the Village Hall, a Christmas lunch in St John’s Church Hall for those who are on their own on Christmas day and finally a New Year’s Eve Party at the Village Hall. And this does not include the events that our local schools will be holding over the Christmas period! What an amazing village this is! This year is also the centenary of the start of the Brownies. Happy Birthday to the Brownies! On a more sombre note, this year has also seen the centenary of the start of WW1. There have been a number of events held in the village organised by St John’s Church, the Tupton Local History Society and others, Tupton Parish Council Magazine
and there will be more over the next three years. The Council is arranging for the flag to be flown at half mast in honour of the men who died in the War on the anniversary of their individual deaths. Thanks to a lot of hard work by individual members of the community a lot more is now known about those who died for us during the War and this information will now be available for future generations. The Remembrance Service will take place on the afternoon of 9th November and this will also mark the centenary. In significant contrast to all of the hard work people contribute to the local community, the village did suffer with a couple of acts of vandalism in the area of the community garden over the summer, with the large planter being tipped over and its contents damaged, and the bus shelter being smashed, apparently by a projectile from a passing car in the early hours of the morning. I would like to make it clear that contrary to some myths in the village, the CCTV is alive and working. We are specifically targeting the village’s community assets so that the police will be able to identify any culprits and take action accordingly. It is your money that is being wasted if local community assets are damaged and have to be replaced, so please report it! We are also working with the police to stop speeding in the village and are also working on initiatives to improve and promote safe parking in the village. Lastly the Parish Council is setting up a subcommittee to look at young people’s facilities in the village. If anyone would like to get involved or have specific ideas do get in touch. Seasons Greetings and Happy New Year to all. Cathy Goodyer Chair Tupton Parish Council 3
Speed Camera Ten parish councils in the North East Derbyshire area have clubbed together to provide a speed camera for police to use in a joint bid to make local roads safer. Ashover, Heath and Holmewood, Morton, North Wingfield, Pilsley, Shirland and Higham, Stretton, Sutton cum Duckmanton, Tupton and Wingerworth parish councils have all contributed to the campaign, and provided funding for the camera and maintenance. Joanne Taylor, a local clerk representing the councils, said: “Local residents regularly raise concerns regarding safety and speeding in their community and look to their local parish councillors for help. All the councils which have provided funding were keen to be involved in a pro-active scheme working alongside the police to help address these issues.” Officers plan to use the camera in the area to help educate drivers, for enforcement checks

and in regular speed awareness campaigns. Sgt. Les Rawson, of the local Safer Neighbourhood policing teams, said: “Speeding and road safety is a concern to local residents and this device will be a real benefit to our teams, and the officers who work in the Clay Cross area. “We already have a great partnership with the local parish councils and will use the camera as part of our ongoing commitment to keeping our roads safe, as well as focusing on any areas which may have been highlighted as an issue to the parish councils.” The camera was officially handed over by representatives from the local councils to at Clay Cross police station on Thursday, October 2.

Christmas Recipe
Chocolate Log
Method 1. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. Lightly grease a baking tin, and line with non-stick paper, pushing it into the corners. 2. In a large bowl whisk the eggs and sugar using an electric hand whisk until the mixture is pale in colour, light and frothy. 3. Sift the flour and cocoa powder into the bowl and carefully cut and fold together, using a spatula, until all the cocoa and flour are incorporated into the egg mixture. (Be careful not to beat the air out of the mixture). 4. Pour the mixture into the lined tin and spread evenly out into the corners. Bake in the middle of the preheated oven for 8–10 minutes, or until well risen and firm to the touch. 5. Place a large piece of baking paper on the work surface. Dust with icing sugar generously. Carefully turn the cake upside down onto the paper and remove the bottom lining paper.
Ingredients For the chocolate sponge • 4 large free-range eggs • 100g Caster sugar • 65g Self-raising flour • 40g Cocoa powder • Icing sugar (to dust)
For the chocolate topping • ½ pint double cream • 300g dark chocolate broken into small pieces
For the cream filling • ½ pint double cream, whipped
6. Cut a score mark 2.5cm in along one of the longer edges. Starting with this edge, begin to tightly roll up the sponge using the paper. Roll with the paper inside and sit the roll on top of its outside edge to cool completely. 7. While the cake is cooling down, make the topping. Warm the cream in a saucepan. Remove from the heat and add the chocolate, stirring until it is melted. Cool to room temperature, then put into the fridge to firm up. 8. Uncurl the cold Swiss roll and remove the paper. Spread the whipped cream on top, and re-roll tightly. Cut a quarter of the cake off from the end on the diagonal. Transfer the large piece of cake to a serving plate and angle the cut end in to the middle of the large cake to make a branch. 9. Put the chocolate icing into a piping bag fitted with a nozzle. Pipe long thick lines along the cake, covering the cake completely. Cover each end with icing. 10. Dust with icing sugar and decorate as you wish.

1st Tupton Scouts The summer seems to be a distant memory, but has been a very busy one for the 1st Tupton Scout Group. Our numbers continue to grow and in some sections, we are running waiting lists.
on Kinder and biking on the five pits trail. They have also been on their annual camp to Hesley Wood where they took part in a host of activities including crate building, go karting and the death slide.
The Beavers (our youngest members) had a sleepover at another local scout group HQ, when I say a sleep over I feel it should have been called an ‘over’ as not much sleep took place! The Beavers have also been taking part in the Beaver challenge, finding out about different countries and cultures.
The group also took part in the Tupton Carnival with their own float, themed ‘seaside’, the children really enjoyed the occasion and the good weather certainly added to the seaside spirit. The group carried out their annual ‘litter duty’ at the Chatsworth Country Fair, which is the groups largest fund raiser and our thanks go to ‘The Red Socks’ for their continued support. The group was also represented at the Dowager Duchess of Devonshire’s funeral with whom the group had a long standing association, a very special lady who will be greatly missed.
The Cub section has been on their annual camp, enjoyed by all cubs and their leaders. They have also been working towards a number of badges including their scientist badge. The Scout section is working at full capacity. They have been climbing, canoeing, hiking

Tupton Event On Sunday afternoon, 22nd June, Tupton Events Committee held a brand new event, their Midsummer Brass Band Tea Party, featuring award winning brass band Shirebrook Miners Welfare Brass Band. The band was presented and conducted, with appropriate comments and explanations throughout, by Mark Wilcockson, who has successfully led the band for many years. Guests to this ticket-only event were treated to a rousing selection of popular classical music, besides theme tunes, theatre and showtime, a little jazz, and great singalong and toe-tapping rhythms. Tables were set with antique tablecloths and decked with flowers, followed at the interval by old fashioned style tiered cake stands piled high with fresh, home-made sandwiches, home-baked scones with jam and cream, and home-made cakes and buns. Teas and coffees were also served, and the bar was open throughout the afternoon to ensure everyone had the refreshments of their choice. The joint was really jumping, flags were being waved, everyone seemed to really enjoy the afternoon. All the committee members are volunteers for all the events, and on this occasion made and served the teas, with all proceeds going towards the main event of the year, Tupton Carnival. Despite competition from Chesterfield’s new Carnival, on one of the hottest days of the summer, Tupton’s 12th Village Carnival was a roaring success. Saturday, 26th July saw the streets lined with people who had gathered to watch the procession to the Carnival field as the main event in the village unfolded. This year, the Parade began on Ford Street, wound around the village, and ended on the spacious playing fields of Tupton Primary School. The magnificent City of Sheffield Pipe Band in their swinging kilts again led the procession, followed by fabulous new Queen Natalie Broadhead and her Princesses, Lucy Gordon, Chloe Burton, and Skye Fulwood on their beautifully decorated float. Retiring queen Amber Wilbourn’s beautiful blue dress exactly matched the blue of the classic Ford Mustang which very carefully drove her in the procession . Rainbows, Scouts, WI, the Primary School, Rugby Club, Evangelical Church, Primary Colours Dance 14

ts Committee Group, Lion and Dragon Dancers, Smiffy Music Group, New Orleans Jazz, Tupton Tractor Club, and other classic vehicles followed. Two main arenas allowed for various displays and musical performances, and many attractions held stalls and small marquees around the perimeter of the field. Lots of stands selling ice cream, do-nuts, sweets, burgers, sausages, drinks etc attracted many hungry people, and kept them satisfied during the heat of the afternoon. Clay Cross Fire Service team very kindly brought their fire engine to the display, and St John Ambulance Service was kept busy during the heat of the afternoon. Freddie the Fearless Fox and the Dancing Dragon pranced amongst the crowds and performed various antics for the children. The UK’s Strongest Man Adrian Smith held the audience spellbound with his demonstrations, there were circus skills being performed and have-a-go attempts being encouraged. New Orleans Strollers Jazz Band played many lively tunes, followed by the melodic Local Vocals from Smiffy Music. One highlight of the attractions for many people, younger and older, was the display of photographs of Tupton and its residents through the years. At around 5.00 pm the various prize-winners and raffle-winners were announced, and tired but happy people were drifting home for tea. Following a break for the summer holidays, the next event produced was a night of Jazz at Tupton Village Hall, on Saturday 27th September, performed by Geoff Beardsall and his band, the New Orleans Strollers. The bar was open, and the evening was enjoyed by many people, although unfortunately, numbers were affected because of continuing holidays. Look out for the posters for the next event – the Christmas Market, to be held on Sunday, 30th November, from 1.00pm in the Village Hall, and later in the Community Garden where there will be the official Lights Up on the Christmas Tree. Then on Saturday, 20th December, the Family Christmas Party at the Village Hall will be a ticket entry only event so watch out for flyers and posters to get your tickets at the earliest opportunity. 50 Plus Forum 50+ Forums are supported by Derbyshire County Council but are totally independent and run by local people creating a powerful voice for people 50 and over. We get involved, take action and influence services.
What’s in it for you?
Information. Choice. Opportunity. Fun and Friendship.
Our August Forum was held at Tupton Village Hall where we received a very interesting illustrated talk from a representative of the Western Front Association about First World War soldiers’ lives. Free tea/coffee and light refreshments were served after which members took part in a survey about older people and money matters. Topics covered ranged from fuel bills, equity release, powers of attorney, care allowance and extra help for pensioners. The results will feed into a presentation to the Pensions Minister and the Care and Support Minister in November. In September Tupton members joined their friends from Clay Cross, North Wingfield and Grassmoor on a FREE day trip to York. It was a lovely sunny and enjoyable day made possible by a kind donation of £350 from County Councilors Kevin Gillott and Brian Wright. The Memorial Garden at Sharley Park Primary School to commemorate the centenary of the First World War has been completed and should be opened officially late October. 18

Tupton Hall School Our trees have turned every shade of Autumn here at Tupton Hall School but our students and staff made the most of the long summer. The first term was packed full of innovative learning, exciting trips, welcome visitors and students’ success. In September we welcomed 500 visitors to our Open Evening. Year 6 pupils, their families and local people toured our classrooms and heard first-hand how great it is to be a Tupton Hall student. Our Sixth Form Open Evening on Thursday 20th November from 5.30 – 8pm. Everyone is welcome, so we hope to see you there!

September also saw our new Year 7s take a trip to Tissington in the Peak District. They had an amazing time in the great outdoors hiking and doing teambuilding activities. Language and literacy were on everyone’s lips this term as we welcomed local author Emma Pass to host a creative writing workshop in our library. Year 8 students were also thrilled to attend a book signing at Trent College by children’s writer Michelle Paver. European Languages Day was celebrated across the school with 150 primary school pupils filling our hall for a language festival. They enjoyed quizzes, games, singing and

dancing accompanied by 40 of our Year 11 Foreign Language Leaders who have now completed their FLLA Award. Our own students pondered the question ‘Why should I learn a language when so many people in the world speak English?’ And teachers of all subjects incorporated foreign languages into their lessons. In October we welcomed 48 students and staff from Collège Marie Curie in Troyes, France. They enjoyed English hospitality with our exchange families, experienced student life at Tupton Hall School and took a tour of Chesterfield including the Crooked Spire. We have also been celebrating sporting success as 10 students were chosen to become Sports Ambassadors for our school and Derbyshire School Sports Partnership. Year 12 student Josh Hough also represented
Great Britain at the MLAIC World Championship rifle shooting competition in Grenada, Spain. Josh came 64th in his senior event and 4th in his junior event. Well done to all of our sporting achievers this term! Looking ahead we are launching Tupton’s Heroes, a project which will chart our community’s links to the two World Wars. Tupton Local History Society On 11th September we hosted a presentation by Mr Scott Knowles, who took on the persona of a First World War Private Infantryman and talked about life in the trenches. He wore the uniform of the time and had all the kit that the soldiers were expected to carry and take care of. This included a Lee Enfield rifle and bayonet- the same model still being used in WW2! He allowed us to handle (and wear) the various items of the typical soldiers kit, which he would be required to march with, sometimes in excess of 30 miles a day (the same distance as Tupton to Sheffield and back). Conditions in the trenches were truly horrific and had to
be endured for weeks at a time before being relieved by others. Scott’s presentation was well received by all with many staying on long after the presentation to talk to him and amongst themselves. The event was a great success. Scott specializes in making these presentations to a wide range of organisations, from schools to societies like ourselves, as well as being active with other WW1 organisations such as the Accrington Pals Battalion. See his web site at www.thetommyteaches.com Scott Knowles is pictured below

Tupton - what a great place to live! Having been a lifelong resident of Tupton, I firmly believe in the comment above, The village is so lucky to have so many residents and families who give enormous amounts of spare time in order to make this village a better and safer place to live and as a Parish and District Councillor I would like to send my personal thanks to each and every one of you. This has been a busy and exiting year for Tupton. I will start with the on-going success with the Annual Carnival, hosted by the Tupton Events Committee; I am pleased to be part of a Parish Council who has agreed to continue to support this organisation to enable its continued success. I am sure if anyone wants to get involved with this organisation you would be welcomed by the team involved. Please see article within this magazine for details. After many years of preparation and fund raising, this year will see the opening of Tupton Rugby Clubs £490,000 flagship sports pavilion. Having being personally involved in this project I am aware of the commitment that has gone into making this dream reality, I am sure that these facilities will have a major impact on the future sporting activities that Tupton has to offer. This project is due to be completed in early December 2014 (subject to weather conditions). The funding for this project has come from several organisations offering grants, with Tupton Parish Council contributing £15,000 as part of the participatory budget scheme run by the Parish Council last year. This left £440,000
to be sourced from the other income avenues, with the club having to raise about £35,000 for their own contribution. I would like to thank the members and officials of the club for applying their dogged determination in making this dream a reality. I am also on the Village Hall Management Committee who is also another volunteer group working hard to support the people of this village. I would ask that each and every one of you give this Hall consideration when looking to hire a venue for a special occasion (you may even see my smiling face volunteering behind the bar). As part of this committee our next big venture is to internally redecorate the hall and we are considering whether it would be possible to do this using volunteers, so if you would be prepared to contribute to the improvement of your Village Hall please let us know. I know I have only mentioned 3 voluntary organisation in this article however as you know there are many more out there. If I was to try and mention them all this would be a book. Again I would like to thank each and everyone one of you, and also the members of public who support these events and groups. Thanks for reading and if you have any issues within the community that you would like help or support with please do not hesitate to contact me. Wayne Lilleyman 07909 446650
Parish Council meetings are held at 7pm on the third Thursday of every month. There is a public forum at the start which everyone is welcome to attend, to provide feedback or ask questions of the Council. 26
