A small snow blower to assist with clearing paths
Message from the Chair May I offer every member of the Tupton community a Happy New Year. If 2014 was not a good year for you, I hope the new year of 2015 brings you a much better year, and for those who had a great year in 2014, I hope 2015 will be even greater. May all your hopes and wishes come true.
Thanks to Local Groups for the Local Christmas Activities I also hope you had a good Christmas. I would like to take the opportunity of thanking all those groups and individuals who worked hard over the Christmas season to care and provide support for others and I would also like to thank the various organisations in the village including the Village Hall Committee, the Events Committee, the Churches and other groups who put on some very enjoyable events and activities over the festive period such as the Christmas Market, the Pensioners Party, The Village Hall Family Christmas Party, the New Years Eve Party and the various Church carol services, concert and, plays. These were a great opportunity to bring the whole village together and were such a success that I know plans are afoot to repeat similar activities during the year.
Winter Weather The end of last year was marked by a sudden drop in temperatures and a fall of heavy snow on Boxing Day which froze very quickly and provided very icy conditions on roads and pavements. Many roads became impassable or unsafe. As a Parish Council we have had further discussions with County Councillors about what can be done to improve the situation. The Parish Council are purchasing as a matter of urgency a hand propelled motorised snow plough to enable pavements to be cleared more easily. Priority will be given to areas of more general public use and near older people’s bungalows in the village. We will also endeavour to keep the grit bins filled up regularly with grit and salt. However I would ask the general public to use these responsibly – they are for general community use to keep public roads and pavements clear. They are NOT for use on private property and you can be prosecuted if you take grit for use on your own drive or property. Local garages and businesses do have smaller quantities of grit and salt that can be purchased for private use. Elsewhere in this magazine is an article reprinted from the County Council’s magazine “Your Derbyshire” on the truth about snow and ice. continued overleaf u

Dog Fouling
Precept for 2015
We have also received a significant number of concerns about dog fouling being the worst it has been in the village for a number of years. We are arranging for this to be cleared up as a matter of urgency and for more signs asking responsible dog owners to pick up their dogs’ mess. It does not take much effort to carry with you when walking the dog a supply of small plastic bags. However in relation to what I suspect is a relative minority of irresponsible dog owners, if you see such a dog owner not picking up their dog’s mess, PLEASE REPORT IT to the District Council Report Enviro-Crime either by telephoning 01246 217610 or text 0780 0002425 or online at www.ne-derbyshire.gov.uk/don’tstand-for-it with the date, time and place and if known, the name and address of the person together with a description of the dog . Don’t worry if you don’t have all these details, but the more information that is available the easier it will be for the wardens to take action.
Councillors have recently met to agree the precept for 2015/16 that we draw down from the District Council. We have agreed to keep this the same amount as the last three years at £99k in order to keep costs down for what I know are difficult times for a number of individuals and families.
All information is dealt with in the strictest confidence and no personal details will be released to the offender. We are arranging for the dog wardens to patrol but knowing the time this is happening, particularly if it is regularly happening, is essential so we can time the dog wardens’ patrols appropriately. If you are an irresponsible dog owner you have been warned- if you are caught you will be prosecuted! Dog wardens can issue a fixed penalty notice of £50 for a first offence, or take legal action with a court fine of up to £1,000.
Facilities for Young People We have recently established a committee to discuss and take forward developing improved facilities for young people in the Parish. We have made provision within the budget for 2015/16 for a number of schemes. As a matter of urgency we are looking to reinstate the multi-use games area near the Tupton Youth Centre with floodlighting so that this can be used between the hours of 6pm-10pm during the winter period at no cost to participants. Other projects being looked at further include similar floodlighting of the Northside multi use games area, provision of outdoor gym equipment for young people and adults, provision of indoor soft play facilities for younger children and development of the Birkin Avenue site. The Parish Council is also willing to provide the funding for a room, for example at the Village Hall, to allow voluntary groups to meet to enable them to provide additional activities for younger people. Please get in touch if you would be interested in organising such an activity. Cathy Goodyer Chair, Tupton Parish Council

The Truth about Snow and Ice Here are five common myths busted… f I could get sued if I clear a path and someone slips There’s no law stopping you from clearing snow and ice from outside your house. It’s highly unlikely that you’ll be sued or held legally responsible if someone is injured on a path if you’ve cleared it carefully from outside your house or business premises
f It doesn’t matter what time of day you clear snow Not true. The best method is to clear the snow or ice early in the day and then cover the path with salt before nightfall to stop it freezing.
f Sand and cat litter can be used instead of salt Sand, cat litter or ash can be used to give good grip underfoot, but it won’t stop paths icing over. You can use ordinary table salt, rock salt or dishwasher salt to prevent black ice. A tablespoon for each square metre should work.
f I can use grit from bins on my own property Not true. Grit bin and salt heaps are for keeping public roads and pavements in your area clear. They are not for use on private property. You can be prosecuted if you are caught taking grit for use on your own drive or property.
f Once the gritter has put salt on the road all ice will melt Not true. Spreading salt on the road is only the start of the de-icing process. Movement of salt around the road by traffic is essential to complete the process. Overnight, when traffic levels are low, roads can remain icy for some time. reprinted from “Your Derbyshire December 2014”

Lest We Forget… Last year on 4th of August we commemorated the 100 years since the start of the First World War and at the Remembrance Sunday Service, David Parmley shared with those in attendance some of the facts that he had managed to research about those soldiers from our parish who gave their lives during the conflict. In total 65 individuals are listed on the War Memorial as being killed in different battles during the First World War. The information collated by David through his research into their lives and death means that we know when each of them was killed. It is intended to fly the flag on the Community Garden at half-mast on the 100 anniversary of their death.
The dates of those whose deaths will be remembered this year are as follows George Waite Firby Thomas Morton Harold Buxton Fred Beard Alfred Poyser Walter Ralph Westbury

Dog fouling The Parish Council has received many complaints and concerns regarding the amount of dog mess being left on our streets and footpaths. Despite providing numerous dog waste bins on all the parks and key locations throughout the parish at significant expense, there are a number of irresponsible dog owners who continue to not clear up after their pets. Dog faeces carry harmful infections such as Toxocariasis which is a potentially serious infection caught through contact with soil or sand contaminated with faeces. This condition is mainly found in children between 18 months and five years and is often contracted in children’s play areas and on the streets. Symptoms include eye disorders, aches, dizziness, nausea, asthma and epileptic fits. Toxocara eggs are not infectious until 2–3 weeks after they have been deposited by a dog, so that is why it is important that owners immediately clean up after their dog thereby removing the threat of infection. The Council is therefore seeking your help in identifying those irresponsible dog owners not clearing up after their pets by asking you to provide details of the offenders via the North East Derbyshire District Council Report

Derbyshire County Council is also running a campaign against dog fouling and are providing a free ‘Yuk!” sign. The weatherproof Yuk! signs can be attached to gates, fences, or displayed in a window and acts as a reminder to the small amount of irresponsible dog owners to think of the health risks if they don’t clear up after their pets.

Stephen Peters I can’t believe where the last four years have gone! I have found it difficult at times trying to juggle my working life, family life and council life but it has been rewarding. The new Tupton Rugby Club building should be opening up soon, this will make a big difference for all involved in the future of Rugby in Tupton. I am also looking forward to moving closer to home when the new North East Derbyshire District Council Offices opens its doors on Mill Lane, Wingerworth. This should be March onwards and should hopefully save money for NEDDC. In recent events I have campaigned against the closure of Alton Ward at Clay Cross Hospital, of which is on hold till after the General Election. And I have campaigned along side my other colleagues from Tupton and Clay Cross to object against the opencast, just off the A61. On the 29th January I will be raising the Union Jack to half mast to remember George Waite Firby, who was 22 years old and was the first soldier from Tupton to be killed in the First World War, there will be other dates later in the year. Autumn Half Term Body Zorbing Event Tupton Parish Council’s second sponsored young person event was held on 28 October 2014 in the Tupton Village Hall. The event was attended by around 20 children and their parents, which saw an inflatable arena with 5 inflatable balls called Body Zorbing! This is carried out on our behalf by colleagues from Bolsover District Council, who run several different events all year round! Tupton Parish Council are hoping to run another event again this year, either in February half term or Easter. A big thank you to Councillors Mick Scott, Tom Card and Stephen Peters for their help in attending and supporting the event on the day.

Wheelie bin stickers In the last magazine published before Christmas we told you about the joint initiative the Parish Council had entered into to purchase a speed camera with nine other local councils to try and make our local roads safer. The Council has recently been successful in a bid for funding from the Rykneld Homes Neighbourhood Improvement Budget, which has part funded the purchase of wheelie bin stickers encouraging motorists to reduce their speed whilst travelling through our Parish. You will have received one of these wheelie bin stickers with this magazine and you are asked to stick it to the side of one of your wheelie bins. Residents who live on some of the main routes through the village where speeding is considered to be more of an issue will receive two stickers, allowing them to stick one to their grey bin and the other to either their green or burgundy bin ensuring that the signs are visible each week. With your help we can make our roads safer for all our residents.

Christmas Fun and Festivities at Deck the Hall On the morning of Saturday, 29th November, the Village Hall was alive with people festooning its walls and ceilings with Christmas decorations, a large tree was put up in the foyer, and an even larger, real Christmas tree in the Community Garden was installed and ready for the great switch-on of the lights for Tupton’s own Christmas Market on Sunday, 30th November. This was the beginning of a great Christmas period in Tupton. From 1pm on the 30th November, Santa had his very own grotto in the smaller hall, with lots of excited children queueing to see him and receive a special
gift. In the main hall were many stalls and tables selling cards, gifts, jewellery, table decorations, tokens and local artworks, and there was an excited buzz around them all. In the centre, chairs were placed for people to sit and listen to members of Local Vocals singers performing Christmas songs and carols, and the kitchen hatch was open to buy hot and cold drinks, snacks and tasty, home-cooked, hot pork rolls with stuffing. The children were also busy dashing around outside, trying out candy floss, toffee apples and the like, and there were several children’s rides set up in the car park. A fruit, vegetable and flower stall had also taken advantage of the occasion, and was proving very popular. The afternoon drew to a close with the highlight of the Children’s Lantern Parade around the streets, before a crowd gathered around the tree in the Community Garden. At 5pm, and with lots of music and cheers, Tupton’s Carnival Queen, Natalie Broadhead performed her traditional duty of lighting up the tree with a special switch.
Christmas Parties Closer to the big day, and to start the school holidays, the ever popular Children’s Christmas Party was held in the Village Hall on Saturday, 20th December. Mums and dads were able to relax and allow their little ones to enjoy the afternoon, with disco lights and dancing, lots of games, and a present for each child to ensure that everyone went home happy and smiling. Next came the turn of the more elderly in the village to have a party, on Tuesday, 23rd December. This was a new venture and involved several of Tupton’s voluntary organisations. The event was initiated and organised by Tupton Events Committee, to help elderly people who may be living alone, perhaps disabled, to enjoy friendly chat, 14

the Village Hall entertainment and a buffet tea with their friends. Support for the event also came from the Village Hall Committee, Tupton Parish Council, Tupton St John’s Church, and from Tesco. Although on the day there were fewer people than those who had originally accepted the invitation, everyone who attended said they had really enjoyed the occasion. Because so many enjoyed the party, another one may be held in 2015, so watch out for those posters at the Village Hall and in the Community Magazine.
New Year’s Eve New Year’s Eve was the grand finale for entertainment at the Village Hall. Tables were set, balloons filled the area in the main hall, disco lights and music arranged, and a whole host of silly games were organised for children and adults alike. Tickets were free but in limited numbers to ensure everyone’s safety and enjoyment, and party goers were invited to bring their own food for an indoor picnic. Prizes were available for best fancy dress, raffles held, and of course, prizes for games winners. Tension mounted as the clock hands climbed towards midnight, then cheers and whistles and balloon popping, as the New Year began with hugs, kisses and last calls for drinks all round. Altogether a fabulous evening’s entertainment, and a hope that Tupton folks really did enjoy the remainder of their Christmas holidays in and around the Village Hall. So many local volunteers put in their time, money and talents to produce traditions of which Tupton can be proud, including raising money for the ultimate event, the now famous Tupton Carnival. Please continue to show your support for these events which are organised especially for the residents of Tupton. A happy and prosperous New Year to you all. Tupton’s Big Issue Wayne Lilleyman highlights the most pressing issues affecting Tupton and its Residents
Dog Fouling
Snow
Until recently I would have commented on the improvement with this menace, however recently the streets of Tupton have again been blighted with the increased presence in Dog waste being left on the pavements. Unfortunately there is a trend associated with this problem; it would appear that this problem gets worse during the winter months (darker nights). I know that the Parish Council have provided and maintain the dog waste bins and in recent times provided more bins to tackle hot spots. After this recent increase in the problem the council at both parish district level are working together to look at extra dog warden patrols and extra signage around the village to remind owners of their responsibilities and the health dangers associated with dog waste. I personally would like to urge all dog owners to take responsibility for your waste and consider the effects this has on our local community.
Having encountered some snowfall in the area over the Christmas period, it would seem that the action taken to clear the snow was not as efficient as it could have been, I and the parish council have raised our concerns with our colleagues at Derbyshire County Council regarding the accessibility on most of our roads in the village and hopefully any future wintery spells will be better dealt with. The parish council have entered into an agreement to purchase a small snow blower to assist with the clearing of paths around old people’s bungalows or any other area which it would be of benefit to clear of snow. This will be monitored to see what improvement’s this makes.

Children’s Activities One of the big issues I get from the younger end of the community is lack of facilities and spaces for younger people; we have just set up our own Young Persons Activities Forum. This is aimed at looking to improve the provisions our community can provide to give our children and teenagers somewhere to socialise and also make improvements to the existing play areas. This is very much in the early stages however some of the easier tasks will be progressing quite quickly.

Tupton Rugby Club Forty five years after it was founded Tupton Rugby Club finally has a permanent new home. Following years of fundraising by volunteers the club’s dream has at last been realised with the building of its new clubhouse on the Recreation Ground at North Side, Tupton. The clubhouse will have spacious changing rooms for all teams and a warm and welcoming bar that includes a veranda where people can look out on to the playing fields.
make the building work along with decoration and fitting out that we know will complete a facility that everyone can be proud of. Outside the car park is to be completed and the whole site will be restored to normal use.
Players and coaches hope this will provide a boost to the club’s development and allow them to continue the success of recent years as they’ve become known as the area’s friendliest rugby club.
The club has 2 senior teams playing in the Midlands League and a growing junior section with teams across all age from 6 up to 18 years. All teams train on Wednesday evenings (juniors 6.30-7.30pm & seniors from 7pm) with the seniors playing league matches on Saturday afternoons and the junior teams either play games against local teams or train on Sunday mornings (10:30-12:00).
Junior Club Chairman, Stephen Baggaley said “It’s thanks to the dedication and commitment of our members, as well as the support from people in the village, that we now have this excellent facility that will be the heart of our club” The last month has seen significant progress made by the Contractors working to construct the new Clubhouse on the Recreation Ground. The external and internal walls are now complete, as is the roof structure, and we are now starting to get a real feel for the size of the building and how it will benefit sporting Clubs in the Village. The next steps will be to complete the electrical and plumbing installation that will
b
We now expect work to be complete by the end of January and so, by the time you are reading this, we will be very close to fulfilling our ambition of being self-sufficient and playing Rugby, Football and Cricket regularly on the Recreation Ground!
Our RFU qualified coaches make sure the sessions are fun and everyone gets a chance to be involved regardless of ability. The junior section is looking out for new coaching staff. If anyone has experience of coaching rugby or would like to learn please contact the club. We are looking into starting up a junior cricket team over the summer months, probably from age 10-14 years. If anyone is interested in playing or helping please contact the club, or if anyone has any ideas of how we can use the facilities that will help the village.

Tupton Local History Society Colin Smith presented “Tupton from the 1920s” on 4th November, 2014. This was a long-awaited event and did not disappoint. Colin had spent many hours digitising his large collection of old photos of Tupton in the months preceding the event, and included a selection of them in his powerpoint slide show. This covered the period from the early part of the 20th century to the present day. Colin provided a commentary on who was who and how the village has changed over the years. The members of the audience were able to recognize relatives, friends, and, in some cases, themselves from the old photos. There was lots of animated conversation between people about the slides. Many stayed on after to talk to Colin and members of the committee, providing valuable personal insights in to the history of the village. We are hoping that Colin will make a second presentation in the near future, concentrating more on the Old Tupton area, as requested by some visitors.

How would you feel about taking part in a Tupton oral history project? We are thinking about setting up a tape recorder at the 2015 carnival for people to record their memories of Tupton. Do you think this is a good idea?

Tupton Local History Society We are getting requests about Tupton history as well as some photos, for which we are grateful. Requests for information are: • Chloros bleach factory on Ankerbold Road. We had a request from someone whose auntie worked there in the 1940-50s. The factory is now the garage just before Station Road. We found some information in the Derbyshire Times - one looking for “Two boys, aged 14 years, wharehouse, for filling Chloros”- 31 August 1945. Do you know of anyone who worked there or has any other information, especially photos?
• Cowlishaw Family. A Cowlishaw in Hampshire is looking for any information about his ancestors, who were farmers who lived in Old Tupton and Woodthorpe in the 17th and 18th centuries. There is a Cowlishaw Wood in Old Tupton/ Woodthorpe, but is there a specific farm associated with the Cowlishaw family? Any information about the Cowlishaw family would be appreciated.
• Sergeant Tombs, Clay Cross Police. This is a request from a collector of police memorabilia. Do you know where this photo was taken? Do you recognize anyone? Sgt Tombs is seated. He retired in 1952. Any information would be useful.

Hold a Fish and Chip Supper to help spinal cord injured people rebuild lives after injury Great British Fish and Chip Supper Friday 15th May 2015 Want to eat Fish and Chips, while raising money for charity? Hold a fish and chip supper on Friday 15th May 2015 whilst raising awareness of spinal cord injury and supporting SIA’s vital services. You can hold a fish and chip supper in your own home, at work or hold a larger supper at your local community centre. SIA will provide a fundraising pack containing tips, recipes, invitations and donation envelopes. By inviting 8 friends and asking them to donate an additional £5 means you will raise at least £40 from your supper but we will also give you additional fundraising ideas to raise even more money for SIA. In 2015 we want to make the batter matter and raise £40,000 from everyone holding suppers. Last year £20,000 was raised. The money raised from the suppers will help the Spinal Injuries Association offer support to individuals who become paralysed and their families, from the moment a spinal
injury occurs, and for the rest of their lives by providing services and publications which enable and encourage paralysed people to rebuild lives after spinal cord injury. Every year in the UK over 1,000 people experience a spinal cord injury and there are an estimated 40,000 spinal cord injured people in the UK alone. Community Fundraising Manager, Elizabeth Wright, says, “The Fish and Chip Supper is a wonderful opportunity for a great evening with friends and family. We are also encouraging people who work to hold a Fish and Chip Lunch in their work places to raise even more funds. You may be even a local community group wanting to run a fun evening with your group.
