Message from the Chair I am very glad to be back as Chair of the Parish Council for another year and to have the opportunity of serving the Tupton community, and to be able to take forward our plans for further development of local facilities, particularly for children and young people in the village. Our local young people facilities committee will be meeting again soon so if anyone would like to get involved do let me know. We will also be looking at what more we can do to make our village safer for local people, in particular to tackle speeding on our roads. Also, as is mentioned elsewhere in this magazine, we are installing a defibrillator in the centre of the village for public use, for anyone to use on someone in cardiac arrest. We will be providing some training in resuscitation techniques for anyone who might be interested and I do ask that as many people attend as possible, after all it could save someone’s life. It was also great to attend the opening ceremony of the new Sports Pavilion on Northside in April which is such a great asset for the local community. Thanks to all those, particularly the Rugby Club who have worked very hard to make that dream a reality.

Over the last year the Parish Council has developed stronger links with local community groups in the village. It is a great privilege to work with so many people who give up their spare time to help in the village and I was particularly proud to have been able to help with the events that took place to mark the 70th anniversary of VE Day on the weekend of the 9th and 10th May. These ranged from a tea dance where people dressed up in 40s costume and danced the night away (and sang along !) to 40s songs by a local jazz band put together specially for the occasion by myself and Peter Smith, the Chair of the Village Hall Committee; a very successful street party for children in the village who each received a free mug commemorating the 70th anniversary and were entertained by a clown and party games, sponsored by the Parish Council, and a really excellent brass band concert by the Shirebrook Miner’s Welfare Unison band, organised by Tupton’s Events Committee, and to top it all off a fly past specially for Tupton of a Dakota plane flying low over the Village Hall and surrounding buildings - a fantastic sight to behold! Thanks to all those who made the weekend such a great success. Cathy Goodyer

A Summer of Success Exam season is in full swing here at Tupton Hall School. We offer a package of support to prepare students, enabling them to achieve the best possible success. Students have attended extra revision sessions, logged in for 1-2-1 tutoring via Twitter, been on a Controlled Assessment catch-up camp at Lea Green outdoor activity centre, and taken part in dramatic workshops based on GCSE texts Macbeth and An Inspector Calls. Expert staff can also offer pastoral and emotional support to any student who feels they are struggling. We would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our students the very best of luck in their exams.

8

Our students enjoy learning. This is clear from the wide variety of activities that they voluntarily do to complement their studies. This year we have seen students of all ages getting actively involved in their community. Sixth Formers set up their own business selling ‘nappy cakes’ (baby bundles) and were crowned Derbyshire winners as part of Young Enterprise. You can buy their award winning products from www.tantrumbp.wix.com/tantrumbabyproducts Year 8s grilled X Factor winner Joe McElderry when he performed at the Winding Wheel. interview skills as part of BBC School Report day. Watch their video on our YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/user/billedit Hundreds turned out to watch Tupton Hall’s finest musical talent. Tupton Live was a concert organised by our BTEC Music group showcasing live rock bands, acoustic singer-songwriters, a mandolin and a trombone player! You can also watch the performances on our YouTube channel or see photos from the gig here: www. tuptonhall.derbyshire.sch.uk/Tupton-Live-1 One of our school bands ‘Lost Generation’ visited Sharley Park Community Primary School. They talked to younger pupils about what it’s like being in a band and also ran a ukulele workshop.

Sporting achievements are always too numerous to mention them all. Let’s pinpoint a few highlights. The Year 8 girls’ football team were rewarded for a recent cup win with a visit from three Chesterfield FC players. Read more here: www.tuptonhall.derbyshire.sch.uk/Footballstars The A Level Sports Studies group were star struck when they spotted Olympians Jess Ennis-Hill and Nicola Adams while visiting the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. Lest We Forget… The ‘Lest We Forget’ project has now been running for over 12 months. The two main purposes of the project were to research and record, all the names listed on Tupton’s War memorial, and to commemorate the sacrifices made by these individuals over the 4 year WWI centenary period. In the last issue details were listed of the dates when the village flag would be flown at half mast, on the anniversary of each soldier’s death. This time I can give you details of a research trip that was recently undertaken to locate and photograph the graves of the Tupton soldiers buried in France & Belgium. Over the Easter period Parish Councillor Stephen Peters, Explorer Scout Leader Ian Almond, and myself spent 3 days in France & Belgium. During this period we visited 26 cemeteries, and memorials to take photographs of the headstones of the 20 soldiers buried, and the 14 soldiers listed on the different memorials. All of the soldiers are buried or remembered within 100 miles of Calais, and are located at many of the WWI battlefield sites. It is quite

10

poignant that when such famous sites as Passchendaele, Ypres, Messines Ridge, Loos and the Somme are mentioned, a Tupton soldier will be buried nearby. Every graveyard is kept in an immaculate condition by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, and there was a sense of peacefulness at each site we visited. At every location we visited, a small cross was planted which recorded the remembrance, and gratitude of their home village of Tupton. Where pictures of the soldiers were available, this was included on the cross. The visit was a total success, and all the soldiers’ locations were identified and photographed. These pictures will be included in a book of remembrance that will be produced when all the research is completed. They will also be a village resource, which will be available for use at the Remembrance Service, or school projects etc. I would like to thank Tupton Parish Council, and County Councillor Mr Brian Wright for their ongoing support, and financial assistance, in helping the project achieve its aims. 1st Tupton Scouts Gear up for Peak 2015 23 Scouts and 6 leaders from 1st Tupton are getting ready to attend the ‘Peak 2015 International Camp’. The Peak camps are special jamborees that are held every five years, and we are very fortunate that it takes place in Chatsworth Park on the Chatsworth Estate. Over 5,000 scouts and guides will be travelling to the jamboree in July from all over the world. The scouts are very excited at the prospect of making new friends and taking part in a variety of on and off site activities. Each group that attends is put in a sub camp, these provide a base for each section and soon become very competitive, with football,

rounders and other inter sub camp tournaments taking place. Some of the more adventurous activities on offer include canoeing, caving, sailing and rock climbing. There are also concerts and activities in the park to encourage the children to mix and make new friends. One thing is for sure the children will come back home having had the time of their lives and will talk about this experience for many a year to come. How can I be so sure; I attended the Peak 80 camp as a scout and I had the most fantastic time and I still talk about it now. David Parmley Scout Leader

The HEART of the Community… The Parish Council has recently been successful in obtaining a grant from the British Heart Foundation towards the cost of providing a Public Access Defibrillator. The Council wanted to reduce the odds of residents of the Parish dying or not recovering fully from a cardiac arrest and took the decision to install an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) outside the chemist on Green Lane which is in the centre of the Parish thereby giving 24 hour access to this life saving equipment. Without immediate defibrillation and CPR when cardiac arrest occurs, the chances of survival are less than 5%. With a defibrillator being used on a patient combined with effective CPR, the odds of survival can be increased to 50%. 12

This Public Access Defibrillator will provide 24 hour access so that emergency life saving equipment is available to everyone whenever it is needed. The AED will be housed in secure alarmed, weatherproof, heated cabinet on the exterior wall of the chemist and will be closely monitored by CCTV. The Council will also be arranging a number of community life saving events to teach residents the key life saving skills, including CPR if you suspect someone is experiencing a heart attack. These short courses could save someone’s life and all residents are encourage to attend. If you would like to book onto one of these free courses, then please contact the Clerk to the Council for further information on 01246 238738 or via email clerk@tuptonpc.org.uk Tupton Parish Council Magazine

Wayne Lilleyman 78.56% say “no!” to First of all I would like to thank everyone who turned out to support and vote for us in the recent election process in which myself and Stephen Peters were elected to represent you all at the District Council level of local government. I will endeavour to continue and support local residents and community groups in any way I can. Following on from the last report, unfortunately we are still encountering problems with speeding cars and irresponsible driving on mopeds and motorcycles, I urge you to continue to reports any occurrences to the police, without the reports we are finding it difficult to convince the local police that there is a problem. I and the Parish Council are continuing with the young person’s committee with a view to providing better facilities for the younger end of the community. Several ideas are being investigated which include upgrading or improvements of the facilities to all of the designated play areas. More detailed plans will be available in the very near future, with work starting on some of the smaller projects within the next few months. I am very pleased to announce that the Sports Pavilion down on the recreation ground is now up and running, this is a state of the art facility which provides changing facilities for varying sporting fixtures and events. I have every confidence that this will be a major asset to the community.

opencast mining at hilltop site

The application by Provectus Remediation Ltd to tear up the hillside west of the A61 between The Royal Oak public house in Tupton and Clay Cross is active once again. New documents have been submitted by the company to the Mineral Planning Authority on the 15th May and notices began appearing on some telegraph poles in the area announcing a new public consultation period, which will run until the 25th June 2015. In the view of the Hilltop Action Group, the new documents contain “nothing which substantially changes the application” and so all of the objections made against the plan still apply: noise; health concerns from dust pollution; site safety; visual impact; increased traffic congestion from lorry movements; the sheer proximity of so much housing and a large comprehensive school. Before June 25th 2015, final objections will be submitted by all concerned about the Provectus application, and a petition, signed by more than 1600 local residents and businesses, strongly objecting to the plans, will be presented to the Chair of the Planning Committee on the steps of the offices in Matlock. More than 78% of those asked said they were vehemently opposed to the plans. Visit the Hilltop Action Group website to follow the latest news and to read the speech by Natascha Engel, MP for North East Derbyshire, during the debate in Westminster about the damage caused to local communities by opencast mining carried out in the wrong place by the wrong people.

Please feel free to contact me with any issues and please enjoy your summer. Wayne 07909446650 Tupton Parish Council Magazine

Tupton Rugby Union Football Club Ltd

Our Journey to Build Our Clubhouse The Mission

The Plan

“Our mission is to provide opportunities for members of our Community to participate in Rugby in a safe, friendly and encouraging environment and to develop their sporting skills to whatever level they wish to obtain whilst valuing the friendship and camaraderie that comes from being a member of our Club”

• The decision to pursue the Clubhouse Development was made at the AGM in 2008

The Past

• Our Club was formed in 1969. It has since been largely nomadic in and around the Tupton/Clay Cross area. Early on, playing facilities were established at the Recreation Ground with changing provided at the Village Hall and refreshment taken at a number of local Public Houses! • Securing a “home of our own” has been a dream for well over twenty years.

• Initial consideration was given to “The Avenue” site:

We achieved preferred partner status but the following factors led to the project being abandoned: Uncertainty over the timescale Uncertainty over number of pitches available (since vindicated) Taking the Club out of the Village Lack of control over use A decision to target the Recreation Ground for development was made in May 2010

• The Playing Field at the Rec. was reconfigured in September 2012 to provide for Rugby, Football & Cricket • The Club secured a 99 year lease on the former allotment garden area in March 2013 • Planning permission obtained in June 2013

14

Tupton Parish Council Magazine

The Project

The Future

• The Club Development Plan identified “facilities are key!”

• The Club will continue to be positioned at the “Heart of the Community”

• A belief that the procurement of a “Flagship” Clubhouse offering excellent facilities would greatly enhance sustainability for all Sports Clubs in the Village and would address the current Shortage of Community Sports Facilities that are affordable and available for other Community use

• After having established the Clubs Mini/ Junior Section in 2011, the Club will continue to grow it’s Player base through:

• The estimated cost would be £475,000

• Links with Primary Schools to develop Tag and Junior Rugby, first made in 2009, will be developed further.

• Good backing from Parish Council, District Council & local MP • The Club appointed DJ Atkinson Ltd. from Grassmoor as the contractor on a design and build basis.

• Links with Tupton Hall School to develop Schools Rugby, first made in 2005, will be developed further with the RFU and be expanded to include Tibshelf

• The Club will celebrate the RWC 2015 as one of the RFUs “lead up and legacy” Clubs. • We will continue to develop the facilities available to Members.

The Acknowledgements Tupton RUFC is in the very fortunate position of having a tremendous Team of dedicated Volunteers who have worked tirelessly to deliver this Project. In the broadest terms we wish to recognise the contributions of the following: • • • • •

VE Day Cel Tupton was transported back in time on the weekend of the 9th and 10th May with a 1940s-themed weekend to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

On Saturday 9th May, A local jazz band played all of the popular tunes from the 1940s to the modern day in an evening of entertainment and dancing at the Village Hall. The Tea Dance event was sponsored by Tupton Parish Council. On Sunday 10th May all Tupton residents were invited to join in the Street Party held in the Village Hall Car Park. Those attending enjoyed music and entertainment, with all children being

18

given a commemorative mug. This family event was again sponsored by the Parish Council with Tescos providing some of the food. In addition, Colin Smith had a display of memorabilia from the 1940s and Trevor Armstrong from the Tupton Local History Society was on hand to do spoken history interviews. At around 4pm we were fortunate enough to have the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight

Douglas Dakota do a fly over the Parish as a tribute to all those men and women who gave their lives in the Second World War and to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of those hostilities. And finally the climax of the weekend celebrations was a Band Concert again held in the Village Hall. A variety of popular tunes from the past and present were played and light

refreshments were available at the interval. This was a fund raising event for the Tupton Events Committee with all proceeds going towards this year’s Summer Carnival. The Council would like to thank all those who helped organize these events, particularly those who were around on the day but more importantly those of you who came along and supported the events and hopefully had a great time.

Dog fouling The Parish Council has received many complaints and concerns regarding the amount of dog mess being left on our streets and footpaths. Despite providing numerous dog waste bins on all the parks and key locations throughout the parish at significant expense, there are a number of irresponsible dog owners who continue to not clear up after their pets. Dog faeces carry harmful infections such as Toxocariasis which is a potentially serious infection caught through contact with soil or sand contaminated with faeces. This condition is mainly found in children between 18 months and five years and is often contracted in children’s play areas and on the streets. Symptoms include eye disorders, aches, dizziness, nausea, asthma and epileptic fits. Toxocara eggs are not infectious until 2–3 weeks after they have been deposited by a dog, so that is why it is important that owners immediately clean up after their dog thereby removing the threat of infection. The Council is therefore seeking your help in identifying those irresponsible dog owners not clearing up after their pets by asking you to provide details of the offenders via the North East Derbyshire District Council Report Enviro-Crime initiative by either telephoning 01246 217610 or text 0780 0002425 or online

at www.ne-derbyshire.gov.uk/don’t-standfor-it. Details such as the date, time and place and if known, the name and address of the person together with a description of the dog will help the Environmental Health Officers tackle the problem. All information will be dealt with in the strictest of confidence and your personal details will not be released to the offender. If found guilty the District Council can issue a fixed penalty notice of £50, for a first offence, or take legal action with a maximum court fine of £1,000. Derbyshire County Council is also running a campaign against dog fouling and are providing a free ‘Yuk!” sign. The weather-proof Yuk! signs can be attached to gates, fences, or displayed in a window and acts as a reminder to the small amount of irresponsible dog owners to think of the health risks if they don’t clear up after their pets.

You can pick one up from any library or complete the form online www.derbyshire.gov.uk/yuk and they will post a sign out to you

Tupton Local History Society In March John Lower gave an interesting presentation about the Chesterfield Canal, its history, its recent partial restoration, and future plans to connect the sections each side of the collapsed Norwood Tunnel. This would create a continuous recreational route from the River Trent right through to Chesterfield. We intend to be present at the Tupton Carnival on Saturday 18th July 2015. There will be information about what we do and also a Spoken History booth where anyone can record memories of the village. This year being the 70th anniversary of VE Day, we would like to hear from anyone who may have any memories of the groups of people who, whilst not in the fighting forces, were undoubtedly helping to keep the population as safe as possible. This includes Air Raid Wardens,

Police, AFS/NFS Fire Fighters (Auxiliary Fire Service, later National Fire Service), Nurses, Doctors, and anyone I may have left out of that list. Did you have a relative, friend or neighbour who served with these groups? Do you have any photos and other items that you can show us? There was certainly a New Tupton AFS in 1941, based on information from the Derbyshire Times. The AFS became the NFS sometime in 1941. Unfortunately most AFS/NFS records were destroyed. Does anyone have any names? We recently heard from two sisters who are researching their family tree. Their great-great- grandparents (Potters) ran the chippy in New Tupton. Who remembers this? Have you any information that we can send to these young ladies?
