Message from the Chair It may seem a little late to be saying Happy New Year as Christmas and the beginning of the year seem a long time ago but I do hope that your own family festivities went well. The New Year has brought its share of bad weather although we have been saved from the terrible conditions that people have had to suffer in the North West, the Lake District and in Yorkshire. We may not have had a significant snow fall since the beginning of the year but the Parish Council is ready to help with our snow plough if necessary. The Parish Council is proceeding with its plans to improve facilities in the village as is illustrated elsewhere in this magazine. In particular we are developing our plans to vastly improve the current somewhat barren and underutilised land and outdated children’s play area at Birkin Avenue. We are looking to create a family park with modern facilities, including landscaped walkways and activities for the young and older generations to enjoy. We will be discussing our revised plans with interested parties in the near future.
Further developments have also been implemented at Northside play area with floodlighting being installed for the multi use games area. Lighting will only be on until 9pm to limit any potential nuisance to local residents. Floral displays will again be going up this year with hanging baskets, floral arrangements on the roof of bus shelters, and displays in larger containers, at strategic sites across the village. We know how much the displays are appreciated by local people. Finally, residents may be interested to know that over the next few months the flag on the community garden is being raised at half mast in honour of those Tupton soldiers who died during the First World War on the anniversary of their death. Details will be displayed at the base of the flag pole and are also available on the Tupton Local History Society website. I do hope you enjoy this edition of the magazine and we are always pleased to receive articles or feedback on the content. Cathy Goodyer Chair of Tupton Parish Council

The Derbyshire Challenge When the people of Tupton chose to elect me as their County Councillor in 2013, I was proud they had given me the chance to help improve the services the community of Tupton receive from the County Council. However, the reality of the Central Government’s austerity programme has been relentless and with the ongoing cuts to the Council’s budgets, it is becoming ever more difficult to provide the services the Council has worked so hard over many years to build.
pupils with learning difficulties or disabilities. There are also further cuts to our Countryside Services. These are just some examples of what we are facing under the current Central Government austerity measures. You can find out more details and have your say on all the proposed cuts being considered by visiting the County Council www.derbyshire.gov.uk/challenge Cllr. Brian Wright County Councillor
The Council’s budget has been affected by centrally imposed cuts to grants which have been reduced from £312m in 2010 to £137m.
Tupton Parish Council
This means that we have to look at making further cuts of almost £70m over the next 2 years. This is on top of the £175m of cuts since 2010. Inevitably something will have to give as the same level of services cannot be delivered with such massive reductions to our budgets. This in no doubt will result in job losses and the loss of a vast wealth of skills and experience that the Council have spent years building up. Cuts to services that help our most vulnerable in society such as Social Services and Family Support, our Children’s Centres, a flagship programme that has helped 100s of children and families since being established, are being decimated, as well as reduced funding for Transport Services including transport for

Neighbourhood Watch In these days we all know that, while we can rest secure in the knowledge that we live in a basically law-abiding society, we have each of us a responsibility to look out for others. That is what Neighbourhood Watch is all about. It means keeping a weather eye open, and if we notice anything unusual or worrying, to have someone to whom we can refer it.
Street, contact number 0300 122 8526 or email chesterfielddistrictnhw@hotmail.co.uk.
Both Tuptons, new and old (and, of course, they are basically the same) are fortunate in that the crime rates are low and we can all lock our doors and garages and pop out for a morning or an afternoon in town without worrying about what we will uncover the moment we get home.
Cllr Brian and Mandy Wakefield initiated and ran this scheme for many years and are just as actively involved today. We invited everyone from the three streets to attend a coffe/tea/biscuits evening at 93 Station New Road (S42 6DD – 01246 865606) to talk about Neighbourhood Watch on Monday evening February 22nd from 7.00 pm. Joye attended with Derek Weston, who gave a most informative presentation, and we now have not only an intrepid band of Neighbourhood Watchers, but also stickers and other materials to distribute. Well done, all who turned up on a chilly evening – and anyone else who wishes to be involved, do contact the scheme at: 93 Station New Road, Old Tupton S42 6DD.
But it is also true that care, and caution, and double-checking the doors and windows are secure, is a part of that confidence. The road to peaceful co-existence is eternal vigilance! So, with that in mind, we are re-launching a Neighbourhood Watch scheme. This applies to Station New Road(Old Tupton), the Church View Estate, and Wingfield Road, from Station New Road, all the way down to the junction with Nethermoor Road and Green Lane. This project has the support of Joye Dobbs at the Chesterfield Police HQ in Beetwell

Could you be a Community First Responder…? Community First Responders (CFRs) are members of the Community who volunteer to respond to Emergency Calls through the 999 system in conjunction with the Ambulance Service and NHS Trust. Community First Responders provide care to patients in their local area before the arrival of an Ambulance or Paramedic. First Responders are trained to deliver Life Saving intervention and defibrillation to patients in Cardiac Arrest. Other calls a CFR may attend include: Choking; Diabetic problems; Stroke; Fitting; Unconsciousness; Difficulty in breathing; Peadiatric; Falls and Trauma; Heart Attack. As Community Responders are based within the Community in which they live or work, they can attend the scene of an Emergency in a very short time, often arriving before the attendance of an Ambulance.
In the case of Chesterfield Community First Responders, in 98% of cases we are the First Emergency Resource to get to the scene, often arriving within minutes of the Emergency 999 call being made. The Community First Responders can then begin vital life saving treatment before the Ambulance arrives, further increasing the patient’s chance of survival. In an ideal world, there would be an Ambulance available on every street corner in each town or in every village. This is not the case, and is why Community First Responders can make such a difference in their Communities, especially in rural areas. If you are interested in becoming a Community First Responder for Tupton and being affiliated to the Chesterfield Community First Responder Group, please contact the Clerk to the Council on 01246 238738 or clerk@tuptonpc.org.uk.

Feel confident with a Derbyshire Trusted Trader Finding a company that you can trust to do some work for you can be a bit daunting – how can you be sure that you won’t get ripped off? What if things go wrong? How do you choose between lots of different companies? These sorts of dilemmas were a driving force behind the setting up by Derbyshire County Council of the Trusted Trader scheme to help local people find traders and businesses that do a good job at a fair price and provide good customer service. That was back in 2008 and the popular scheme has gone from strength to strength. These days there are nearly 17,000 searches each month on the Trusted Trader website, www.derbyshire.gov.uk/tt by people looking for reliable companies to use. Another ringing endorsement for the scheme was a recent survey which gathered feedback from more than 16,000 people who had used a Trusted Trader and an impressive 94% said they were very satisfied with the service they received. So people can have lots of confidence when employing one of the 1,200 traders who are part of the scheme. In the very unlikely event of someone having a problem with one of the traders then help is at hand. Derbyshire County Council trading standards officers can get involved in any queries involving Trusted
Traders and seek to resolve them. The scheme particularly helps to protect older and vulnerable adults by making it easier for them to use Trusted Traders rather than rogue traders who typically cold-call and use high pressure sales techniques. A recent development has been the inclusion of Financial Advisors who specialise in providing financial advice for people in later life and can help with matters like care fees, pensions and investments.
Find out more about all aspects of Trusted Trader at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/tt or call 01629 536148. Enquiries are also welcome from businesses interested in signing up to the scheme – membership brings lots of benefits and costs only £70 - £100 per year.

Helping you stay fit and healthy‌ Thanks to a National Lottery grant the Parish Council is pleased to announce that outdoor gym equipment will soon be available on the Ford Street recreation ground. Funding was applied for towards the end of 2015 and the Parish Council was informed earlier this year that it had been successful. The installation of the equipment will take place at the beginning of April with an opening event planned for the end of the month where a professional trainer will be on hand to provide advice and guidance on the use of the equipment and to answer any questions. We know that this equipment will be a valuable addition to the Parish facilities and we hope you will make full use of them. Detailed below are the type of equipment that will be available

A park for the whole Community‌ In the last Community Magazine the Parish Council outlined a proposal for redeveloping the recreation ground to the rear of Birkin Avenue and sought your views. The Council received a variety of responses to the proposals, many in support of the area being redeveloped and the idea of additional facilities for the younger people in our community was well received. There were understandably some concerns regarding certain elements of the proposal, particularly from residents living in close proximity to the site, so the Council has listened to these views and has made some changes to the design which is outlined below. Many of the features have been retained and outdoor gym equipment has been added. Access to the site for emergency vehicles has improved and a link path through out the site has been provided. In addition low level lighting will be installed throughout the park which will be turned off at 9pm and CCTV cameras will be positioned at strategic locations and working around the clock to record and monitor the area. We hope you agree that this will make the area far more attractive and will help provide another valuable community facility for everyone to enjoy.

Off the gas grid? Save money on your oil buying costs Rural Action Derbyshire (RAD) is a charity set up in 1924 to support rural communities in Derbyshire. One of their current projects is running a community bulk oil buying scheme. Oil prices are extremely low at the moment which is good news for oil users. RAD can make cheap oil even cheaper through this bulk buying scheme. The scheme is open to anyone using Kerosene28 for their heating – households, businesses or community buildings. There is NO registration or annual membership fee. The scheme is run online where members can register, order and pay for their oil. If you are one of the 20% of rural Derbyshire that do not use a computer or have reliable access to the internet then you can manage your account through the Project Manager at RAD. There is no obligation to buy your oil through the scheme, you can dip in and out of it depending on your needs. RAD will always be able to negotiate a better oil price than you would be able to arrange with a supplier in the same period due to the quantity they are negotiating with. RAD orders oil once a month on behalf of their ‘members’ and negotiate with up to 8 oil suppliers for the best possible price. The deadline for the next oil order is 12 noon on Tuesday 5th April 2016. The rest of the dates for the next few months are as follows:
14
10th May 7th June 5th July Deadline day is always 12 noon on a Tuesday. Payment is taken the following day, delivery is within the following 10 working days.
What people say “Very happy to recommend this scheme – I placed my order, it was delivered speedily and the price gave me an excellent saving.” “If only I had known about the scheme earlier. I just paid over £400 for 500 litres of oil. If I had bought through the scheme I would have saved over £250. At least I know I will get a good price next time.” For more information on the scheme please contact the Project Manager, Emma Simpson at RAD on 01629 592970 or 0845 313 8800, email oil@ruralactionderbyshire.org.uk or visit the RAD website www.ruralactionderbyshire.org.uk/oil. “Go outside. Remain” Nick Offerman
A wise man once said go outdoors and remain there. There might still be a chill in the air but days are getting longer and the galanthus are in bloom – it’s the perfect time to prep the garden. Here are some beginner tips to get you started at this time of year.
One: Get your tools in order
Three: Prepare the ground
Everyone needs the tools of their trade. My big five for the garden are fork, spade, hoe, rake, and trowel. A good pair of gloves are a must and a decent pair of secateurs will be at home in your pocket. A wheelbarrow completes the rock star look.
In other words: weeding. Dig out tired old shrubs and weeds, especially perennials (thistle, nettle, bindweed etc.) Try to remove all parts of the roots, but don’t be over hasty. My grandfather would tell me a garden would only ever be finished if there was nothing left to take out. Use a fork to turn the soil over, hoe and then rake. Then bask in satisfaction. At this time of year if you’re not going to plant anything for another week or two then it helps to lay some old carpet over your freshly turned soil. This prevents new weeds from getting any sunlight and helps warm the ground.
Two: Compost One of the first things you want to establish is a compost heap. This can begin as simply a sunny corner in the garden where you put your vegetable scraps but you’ll soon want a container of sorts. There are numerous ones available on the market but it’s an easy job (and fun) to construct one from scrap timber or pallets, old tyres, bricks or wire mesh. A quick search online will yield countless tutorials; ignore them all and make up your own design. Avoid placing the heap on concrete, patio slabs or tarmac. You want a site on bare soil so worms and other creatures can colonise, they help mix the compost. When adding ingredients include a healthy mix of green (vegetable peelings, fruit waste, tea bags, plant prunings, grass cuttings etc.) and brown (cardboard egg boxes, scrunched up paper, small twigs etc.) waste. Do not add meat or cooked food waste, this attracts rats, and avoid citrus. Some egg shells provide good minerals though! 18

Four: Sow A simple way to start planting is sow some herb seeds in small pots with fresh compost and sit them inside by a window with plenty of light. Water regularly but don’t drown them. Basil, parsley and thyme are all pretty easy to look after and don’t take long to grow. If you also grow tomatoes this year some basil will taste great with them.
Five: Sit Another tip from my grandfather: when the work is complete don’t forget to sit in the garden; it’s important to enjoy the space you’ve created. If the nights are a little chilly, grab some blankets, get a fire pit on the go, cuddle up and crack open a bottle of the parsley wine you’ve had brewing in the shed since last year. You didn’t think we were sowing herbs for a salad now did you! By Stewart McClelland

Tupton Local History Society Monkey Hollow, Tupton
Ashover Light Railway Bridge
This is on the footpath from Furnace Hill Road in Clay cross through to Tupton along the side of the Derby branch of the railway (George Stephenson’s North Midland Railway from Derby to Rotherham). The question is: was it caused by a bomb on 15th March 1941 when part of Ward Street was destroyed? Also, why is it called Monkey Hollow? It certainly looks like a bomb crater. The trees have had nearly 75 years to grow since then, so their presence there is reasonable. However, some sources say that it was an air raid shelter for Clay Cross Works. In the bottom of the hollow is this steel trapdoor. Does anyone know what is underneath it? Is it an entrance to an underground chamber? The trapdoor seems to indicate that Monkey Hollow was an air raid shelter rather than being caused by a bomb. If it was a bomb then it dropped very close to the railway- less than 50m away and not too far from the northern portal of the Clay Cross railway tunnel. Of course, it is also not far from the Clay Cross Works. This company would, presumably, have been very important to the war effort. Does anyone know what the works were manufacturing at that time?

On the other side of the footpath is a bridge crossing the railway diagonally. The footpath on the other side leads to North Wingfield. The bridge has a quite substantial Clay Cross Tunnel construction. Was Northern Portal this part of the Ashover Light Railway? I think that the ALR circled round over the main line railway just south of the tunnel’s northern portal into the Clay Cross works and then on towards Ashover. On the Monkey Hollow side of the bridge the ALR probably dropped down to sidings near the main line railway. Is this correct? If Monkey Hollow was an air raid shelter for Clay Cross Works the employees would have to cross the Midland railway to get to it. Would that be via the bridge? The view to the south gives an excellent view of the tunnel’s northern portal. It is quite a magnificent structure complete with defensive arrow slots! The Victorians knew how to build lasting and attractive structures.

December 2015 Event We were unable to do Colin Smith’s “Old Tupton” presentation in December due to circumstances beyond our control. Instead we showed a film, “Derbyshire on Film”. This was a compilation of amateur and professional films about our beautiful county and was well received by those who attended. We hope that Colin Smith will be able to make his presentation in the near future.
Upcoming Events • On Thursday 3rd March 2016 Cathy Goodyer will talk about her home, Egstow Hall, which is on Brassington Lane.
