All Saints Church, Whitstable We wish this new publication all God’s blessings and are grateful to the editor for giving us space to advertise a few events. Most of what we stand for as a church, as well as details of how to book weddings, renewal of vows, christenings and so on, can be found on our website which is www. allsaintswhitstable.com. On the website are also details of our Holy Week and Easter services and our other church services during the month. A warm welcome awaits you. We run a drop in social club called Cameo, which meets on a Monday from 2pm to 3.30pm (excluding Bank Holidays) A Film Club which shows non religious films on Thursdays from 11.15am in our church hall on a large screen. We run Alpha courses, Christian discovery courses and other types of courses designed to help people find faith or grapple with questions of faith.

Warning Telephone Scam We have been made aware of a scam concerning phone calls received from the 0809 area code. A woman’s voice is heard saying “Hey, this is Karen. Sorry I missed you. Get back to me quickly - I have something important to tell you.” She then repeats a phone number beginning with 0809. If you receive a call like this, do not call the number back - you could be faced with a charge of at least £15 per minute.

Our Bowling Club is set in the idyllic grounds of Whitstable Castle and has been in existence since 1936. We are open right through the summer months and you are welcome to come along and watch a game of Bowls on our beautiful green, with the Castle providing a beautiful backdrop for our games. New driving laws - a guide to New laws mean that police are now able to issue on-the-spot penalties for careless driving. Some of the offences are new, while some have existed for a while. But what exactly is “careless driving” and how can you avoid penalties? What do the new laws cover? Many of the offences are covered by laws that already exist, but have been hard to enforce because police had to go through the courts. Now police can issue an on-the-spot fine, handed to you on the road, so it’ll be easier for them to do so. The standard fine for a number of offences has gone up, including: • Speeding • Using a mobile phone while driving • Driving on the hard shoulder • Ignoring traffic directions And two new bits of ‘careless driving’ have been made an offence: • Tailgating • Lane-hogging, usually middle lane What is tailgating and lane-hogging? Many drivers might be familiar with these things without necessarily knowing what they’re called.

Tailgating This is when someone drives too close to the car in front. It’s usually done by drivers trying to force the car in front to move faster or to change lanes. Lane-hogging Many drivers use the middle lane as a ‘cruising lane’ and drive too slowly. This is dangerous and can force cars to slow down quickly. These are big pet hates of many people since they inconvenience drivers and can put other road users at risk. How much can I be fined? It depends on the offence. You can be fined £100 and 3 points on your licence for: • Tailgating and lane-hogging • Using a mobile phone • Speeding • Not stopping at a red light

So you can be fined £50 for: • Failing to give way • Stopping on the hard shoulder unnecessarily What can I do to avoid the penalty? 29% of people admit to hogging the middle lane, according to a recent AA/Populus survey. And tailgating is prevalent too. That means there are lots of drivers who could face being pulled over and hit with the fine.

You can avoid the fines by doing a number of things: • Keep a safe distance from the car in front by using the ‘2-second rule’ – pick a landmark ahead and use it to see if you’re over 2 seconds away from the driver in front • Move to the inside lane when you’re at cruising speed, only using the middle and outside lane to overtake • Never use a mobile phone while driving. Instead, buy a phone holder and turn on the speaker function.

Whitstable Umbrella Whitstable Umbrella centre is open to the public and anyone can use our facilities or take part in activities. We have a special emphasis on mental health and wellbeing, and aim to support all users in being part of our community. We also welcome volunteers of all background who are an important part of centre activity. The Umbrella centre is a lively friendly place with many activities and opportunities to socialise, learn a new skill, find support, volunteer, or just relax. Here are some of the things we offer. For more information look at ‘What we do here’, contact us or drop in. uCommunity Café and Garden Open 12–4pm Tuesday to Saturday, with excellent value meals and refreshments. Internet Workstations We have computers with free internet access for public use, just ask in the office.

Community Centre uVolunteering There are many opportunities for volunteering at the Umbrella centre, do get in touch if you think you can offer some time whatever your background, it can be a very rewarding experience. uCommunity Events Our hall is a popular venue for many community events, including regular dates such as the farmers market, Indoor fairs and antique sales and also one-off events like craft fairs.
uHealth and Wellbeing There are many opportunities here to keep fit and healthy without joining a gym! From our relaxed but popular walk and talk group, to keep fit and dance classes for all ages, check out the timetable to find something to suit your pace. uFundraising Events Look out for our annual Funday (normally the 3rd Sunday in June) and other fundraising events and activities. We are always looking for new ideas and people to support our fundraising efforts. uCommunity Support Kent Law School have an outreach clinic based at our centre which can offer free legal advice. Citizens Advice Bureau also runs occasional outreach appointments here (Volunteer Bureau Office). Kent counselling Advice (KCA) runs an outreach appointment here. Rethink Advocacy Service (for anyone with metal health illness or expressing problems) runs an outreach appointment weekly on Mondays, mostly by appointment.

Easter Cake
Ingredients For the cake you will need 50g cocoa powder 125ml boiling water 185g butter, softened 330g firmly packed brown sugar 3 eggs 225g self-raising flour 75g plain flour ¼ teaspoon bicarbonate of soda 180ml milk 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 150g small milk chocolate Easter eggs Coloured cake decorations For the milk chocolate frosting 400g eating-quality milk chocolate, chopped 160ml thickened cream

To make the cake Combine cocoa and water in a small bowl; whisk until smooth. Cool. Preheat the oven to (160˚c or 140˚c fan oven). Grease a deep 22cm round cake tin, line base with baking paper. Beat butter and sugar with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating until combined between additions. Transfer mixture to a large bowl. Stir in sifted flours and soda, then milk, vanilla and cocoa mixture. Pour mixture into prepared tin. Bake for about 1 hour 10 minutes or until cooked. Stand for 10 minutes before turning onto a rack to cool. To make the milk chocolate frosting Combine chocolate and cream in a small saucepan, stir over a very low heat until smooth. Transfer to a bowl. Refrigerate, stirring frequently, until a spreadable consistency. Spread Milk Chocolate Frosting over top and side of cake, decorate with chocolate eggs and coloured decorations

Football Club team affiliated to the Club, although our longer term aim is to develop a structured set-up covering the younger years. History has been made this season, as the club progressed to the last 32 of the FA Trophy, under the Management of Nicky Southall. Nicky was a Premiership player with Bolton Wanderers but his fame in Kent really lies with Football League Gillingham FC. The club’s current shirt sponsors are Budgens of Whitstable, to whom we are grateful. Our income streams otherwise rely on gate revenue, sponsorship and commercial opportunities and the generosity of the few. It’s a massive task to run such a club for the benefit of the town, so why not come along and show your support for the remaining few games and into next season?
