The vicar, Rev Simon Tillotson, writes: We are a friendly church with a large Sunday school for children, a Senior Choir, a Junior choir, a Film club, a Coffee and Chat afternoon, a youth group, a Football for Fitness club, and so much more. We run Alpha courses to help people discover the Christian faith for themselves. We conduct many christenings and weddings each year and also offer renewal of vows ceremonies for couples who wish to commit themselves afresh to each other either at a special anniversary or to rededicate their lives to each other. I am happy to visit anyone who would like to chat about spiritual matters or who is needing company, as are our pastoral assistants. Our popular church hall is available for private functions and for weekly, regular bookings and we have excellent parking facilities. We care for each and every person whether or not they are church attenders or believe in God or not. Call 01227 275947 on week day mornings after 10am or email me at tillotsons@gmail.com if you have any questions. May God bless you. Man on the Run 5k Join hundreds of men and boys running to beat male cancer, in our BIGGEST EVER Man On The Run - a 5k run or walk for men only, in aid of Cancer Research UK MAN ON THE RUN 5K Hampton Pier Avenue, Herne Bay, Kent 6th July 2014 It is a male-only race and entries cost £12 (£6 for under 18s) Entries now open

Man on the Run is a 5k charity run for men and boys, that has been devised to raise awareness of male cancers. It is for men and boys although we advise that under 18s be accompanied by a male adult. The event is in aid of Cancer Research UK and it is hoped that each runner will help to raise money for Cancer Research in preventing and curing cancer. 2014 will be the tenth anniversary we have held this fun run – the inaugural race in 2005 was called Run For Your Life. The name has been changed to avoid any possible confusion with Race for Life. The race was conceived by Stephanie Lam, a health professional within the Eastern & Coastal Kent Primary Care Trust, who is a runner herself. Whilst events such as Race for Life have increased the awareness of possible cancer risks for women, there has been relatively little in the UK highlighting the corresponding dangers for men. Man on the Run is trying to address this with a fun, informal summer event. The current race organisers, Sarah Gower, Sean Reilly & Gerry Reilly, will be assisted by volunteers from the Canterbury Harriers running club.

Discover a woodland walk with a difference The WildArt Trail of West Blean & Thornden Woods is an intriguing art and sensory experience featuring wildlife totem poles, ‘woody’ woodpeckers, giant willow woven creatures and arches, and ‘log cabin’ insect homes. Children’s art, from workshops held in local schools, has helped transform posts and tree stumps around the trail. In fact, there are surprises to be had at every turn. The one mile circular waymarked trail can be found off the road between Tyler Hill and Greenhill between Canterbury and Herne Bay. This ever-evolving project was started by Kent Wildlife Trust in 2011, thanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, with the aim of encouraging more people to visit and appreciate these ancient woodlands. The family friendly hard track is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs, and leads from the car park on Thornden Wood Road, which has designated spaces for blue badge holders and people with young children.

Artists have used natural materials to create sustainable, non-invasive artwork which blends into the surroundings. An example of this is the giant woven ants at the side of an ant hill formed from woodchip harvested from Thornden Wood. The use of sustainable materials is essential on a Site of Special Scientific Interest such as this and means that the artwork can evolve and change through the years. As pieces begin to decay, new artwork can be created and installed. West Blean and Thornden Woods nature reserves cover about 490 hectares - a significant part of the Blean Complex of over 3,000 hectares (11 square miles) one of the largest concentrated tracts of ancient seminatural woodland in England. Kent Wildlife Trust works within a partnership of other owners and managers of Blean woodland to establish and maintain a continuous nature conservation complex - a real ‘Living Landscape’. The WildArt Trail adds an entertaining new dimension to a woodland walk and can be enjoyed whatever the season.

We support Medic Alert and Message in a Bottle which both give medics immediate vital information in the event of an emergency. The money local people have generously donated has enabled us to help many organisations and individuals including; Greenhill Gymnastics club, Whitstable and Herne Bay Sea Cadets, Whitstable Sea Scouts, Kent and Surrey Air Ambulance, Strode Park, Whitstable Gymnastics Club, Pilgrims Hospice, Whitstable and Herne Bay Umbrella centres, Kent association for the Blind and Hope for Tomorrow a new mobile Cancer unit. erne Bay Lions Club Lions Clubs International Foundation provides immediate relief to people affected by major disasters anywhere in the world funded via local Lions Clubs. Recent disaster areas have benefitted from Paul Disaster Relief Water Filters funded by Lions Clubs. The Paul units filter germs out of water making it fit to drink offering protection against Cholera, Typhoid and other infectious diseases. We collect thousands of used spectacles which are sent to various third world countries for re-use. We raise funds for LIBRA, the Lions International Blood Research Appeal which supports the Haematology Unit at Kings College Hospital where invaluable research and treatments are carried out on Haemophilia, Leukaemia and Sickle Cell Disease.

Connor needs a cure Connor is a lovely and gentle 4 year old boy. He lives with his parents Georgina and Wayne Olsen and baby brother Kye in Westgate on Sea in Kent. The family only discovered that Connor has a Duchene Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) in March 2013. DMD is a very rare muscle wasting disease that will rapidly affect every muscle in his body including his heart. DMD is caused by a defect occurring in his gene and in Connor’s case this was spontaneous and could happen to anybody. DMD will see Connor in a full time power wheelchair by

around 10 years old and most boys with DMD do not survive their 20s. Connor is unaware of his illness and his parents would like it to stay that way for the moment. Although there isn’t a cure yet for this cruel disease, we will keep our fingers crossed that with your support one can be found before it is too late. We invite you to organise, host an event or make a donation. The caring for Connor campaign needs to raise enough money to send our little man for treatment he needs.

The Samaritans A listening voice at times of crisis and despair Local Samaritans took over 14,000 calls in 2013 The Samaritans is best known for its completely confidential telephone service for people in despair and mental distress. The Whitstable area is covered by Canterbury and District branch. Like all Samaritan branches, it is staffed entirely by trained volunteers. Confidentiality is assured when calling, e-mailing or having a face to face meeting with a Samaritan. Callers don’t have to give their name and a caller’s telephone number cannot be seen by the Samaritan volunteer. Calls can’t be recorded. Apart from the costs of calling, the service is free. People call the Samaritans for many reasons - bereavement, personal debts, business failure, redundancy, mental illness, relationship breakdown, family breakup, loneliness, illness, work or study pressures, domestic violence, sexual abuse, racism, homelessness, sexuality issues and workplace bullying are just some of the reasons. All callers are treated with

the same respect, consideration and patience. There is no such thing as a typical caller to the Samaritans. Samaritans understand that what an individual caller is going through is unique to that person. The common denominator is that all callers seek someone to hear them. Someone who’s attention is entirely focussed on them, who won’t judge them or advise them, but just listen with complete focus on the caller. The Samaritans offer no promises and can work no miracles. Their constant hope is that suicidal callers decide not to take their own lives and that those in anguish have found some relief through talking to a Samaritan. The local branch is busier than ever and, in addition to its one to one services, it runs outreach programmes to the area’s huge student population and to prisoners in some of Kent’s jails.

Whitstable Brewery The official brewery of the world-famous Whitstable Oyster Company History Of The Brewery In 2003, the Whitstable Oyster Company stepped in to save a Kentish microbrewery’s site when it folded. They hired Rafik Abidi, a Heriot-Watt trained brewer with years of experience of the British brewing industry and he got straight to brewing great beer! Almost ten years and a huge increase in production later and Whitstable Brewery’s range has gone from one to twelve beers and five to hundreds of outlets. Needless to say Raf finally has someone else to drive the van and do the cleaning for him!

intense fruity burst of Citra or the glorious spice of the East Kent Golding, no amount of Pinot Blanc will tempt them back! We are not afraid to experiment with the unusual; we’ve brewed everything from a Wheat Beer made with hundreds of kilos of raspberries to a Black Lager, a cask beer combining the best aspects of a crisp Czech Pilsner and a rich, roasted Stout.

How We Brew Our brewing style focuses not only on producing first-rate examples of popular styles, like our East India Pale Ale and Native Bitter, but also on supporting varieties which are often unfairly overlooked, such as our Renaissance Ruby Mild and Oyster Stout. Our single-hop range of ales is designed to make drinkers more intimately aware of the ingredients which make their beer and the diversity of flavours and aromas that hops can provide. Once someone has tasted the

Where to buy A selection of our cask ale and craft keg beer is served at every one of the worldfamous Whitstable Oyster Company’s venues, including our very own Whitstable Brewery Bar: The Hotel Continental; The Lobster Shack @ The East Quay; The Royal Native Oyster Stores; The Forge.

Summer Pudding recipe This quintessentially British pud, packed with juicy summer berries, is so much easier than it looks, perfect for beginners… Ingredients 300g strawberries 250g blackberries 100g redcurrants 500g raspberries OR 1¼kg/2lb 12oz mixed berries and currants of your choice 175g golden caster sugar 7 slices day-old white bread, from a square, medium-cut loaf Prep: 20 mins Cook: 10 mins plus chilling Skill level: easy Serves 8

Please mention

Method Bring out the juices: Wash fruit and gently dry on kitchen paper - keep strawberries separate. Put sugar and 3 tbsp water into a large pan. Gently heat until sugar dissolves; stir a few times. Bring to a boil for 1 min, then tip in the fruit (not strawberries). Cook for 3 mins over a low heat, stirring 2-3 times. The fruit will be softened, mostly intact and surrounded by dark red juice. Put a sieve over a bowl and tip in the fruit and juice. Prepare the bread: Line the 1.25-litre basin with cling film as this will help you to turn out the pudding. overlap two pieces in the middle of the bowl as it’s easier than trying to get one sheet to stick to all of the curves. Let the edges overhang by about 15cm. Cut the crusts off the bread. Cut 4 pieces of bread in half, a little on an angle, to give 2 lopsided rectangles per piece. Cut 2 slices into 4 triangles each and leave the final piece whole. Build the pud: Dip the whole piece of bread into the juice for a few secs just to coat. Push this into the bottom of the basin. Now dip the wonky rectangular pieces one at a time and press around the basin’s sides so that they fit together neatly, alternately placing wide and narrow ends up. If you can’t quite fit the last piece of bread in it doesn’t matter, just trim into a triangle, dip in juice and slot in. Now spoon in the softened fruit, adding the strawberries here and there as you go. Let flavours mingle then serve: Dip the bread triangles in juice and place on top; trim off overhang with scissors. Keep leftover juice for later. Bring cling film up and loosely seal. Put a side plate on top and weight down with cans. Chill for 6 hrs or overnight. To serve, open out cling film then put a serving plate upside-down on top and flip over. Serve with leftover juice, any extra berries and cream.

Dreamland by Whitstable author

Nick Evans

Dreamland Revived is a new book tracing the 150 year history of the amusement park Reflecting the impending reopening of Dreamland is a new book which charts its history from the 1860s to the present day. Dreamland Revived has been written by Whitstable author Nick Evans and made its debut in Margate over the Whitsun Bank Holiday weekend. The 128 page book contains nearly 250 photographs of the park’s best known rides including the Scenic Railway, the Looping Star, the Caterpillar, the Big Wheel, the Miniature Railway as well as the cinema, ballroom, bingo hall and squash courts. He said: “I’m delighted, like so many people, to see real progress taking place at Dreamland and the title reflects that change in fortunes. “Not only have I used photographs from my own sources but I have been very fortunate to have been loaned others, some of which haven’t appeared

in print before or at least not for several decades. I uncovered a rarely seen mid 1960s John Hinde postcard of the park at night and the publisher in Ireland kindly lent me a copy of the original transparency. “Like Dreamland itself, the book will appeal to all tastes and ages. It’s full of nostalgia when times were perhaps simpler and holidays involved heady days at the seaside. Youth was never properly misspent without visiting Dreamland a few times.” The majority of photographs come from the Bill Evans Collection, named after Nick’s late father who was press officer for Dreamland, and its sister operation, the Lido, Cliftonville, in the 1970s and early 1980s. Nick added: “It’s thanks to him that many of the photographs survive as Bill intervened in 1981 when he realised they had been earmarked for the skip during a clear out to make way for the arrival of the Bemboms. It wasn’t just photographs but a lot of reference material which was saved as well.” The story begins 150 years ago in the late Victorian era with the creation of the Hall By The Sea by circus showman ‘Lord’ George Sanger. The book outlines the building of Dreamland from 1920 by John Henry Iles and Please mention

family, successive takeovers by Associated Leisure, the Bembom Brothers and the late Jimmy Godden and the site’s transfer into the hands of the Dreamland Trust. The final chapter in the book discusses the Trust’s involvement and its plans for the future along with photos of the cinema building while closed to the public. Dreamland Revived will be on sale not only at the Dreamland visitor and learning centre but at the tourism information centre at Margate’s Droit House; The Kitchen in Duke Street, Margate; The Shell Grotto, Grotto Hill, Margate; Waterstone’s and WH Smith stores at Westwood Cross and Margate; Lovely’s Art Gallery, Northdown Road, Cliftonville; Michaels Bookshop, Ramsgate, and Hidden Treasures, Minnis Bay, Birchington, priced £15.99. Whitstable Harbour In the late 1820s, the Canterbury and Whitstable Railway Company built a railway from Canterbury to Whitstable and a new port at Whitstable to bring heavy goods such as coal from the north east. The railway between Canterbury and Whitstable, known as the Crab and Winkle line, was opened in 1830 and was the first in the world to carry passengers in trains drawn by steam power. The harbour was officially opened on the 19 March 1832, two years after the railway was finished. 10,000 people attended the opening, many coming by train from Canterbury in open wagons. Although the harbour halved the cost of the transport of goods from London to north east Kent, the opening of the direct north Kent railway line, from London in 1861 proved competitive. The harbour continued, with

the fishing industry doing well, and the introduction of new cargoes such as timber imports from the Baltic. Road transport created more competition for the Crab and Winkle railway. The railway therefore closed to passenger traffic in 1932, freight continued with the harbour still open for coal, grain and timber. When British Railways finally closed the railway line from Canterbury in 1952, the harbour lost much of its trade. In 1958 the Whitstable Urban District Council bought the harbour from the railway for ÂŁ12,500. In 1974 Whitstable Council became part of Canterbury City Council. The harbour is now managed by a Harbour Board, appointed by the council, which develops the harbour as a profitable mixeduse port for the benefit of the local community.

Whitstable Town

Football Club Whitstable Town Football Club was founded in 1886 and plays at The Belmont ground. A semi-professional club, our First Team plays within The Isthmian Football League Ltd, commonly known as the Ryman League, after its title sponsors Ryman Stationers. The Club has two additional teams. Firstly, the U21 Development Side aims to yield and nurture talent as well as providing a platform for returning injured players (three overage players are allowed!) Secondly, the Kent Youth League U18s is the only youth team affiliated to the Club, although our longer term aim is to develop a structured set-up covering the younger years. History was made last season, as the club progressed to the last 32 of the FA Trophy. Can our new management duo of brothers Jim & Danny Ward emulate that success? Can they guide the club to achieve their best ever year at this level? The season kicks off on Saturday 9 August, with a number of pre-season fixtures. All details, such as Club breaking news, can be found on our website www.whitstabletownfc.co.uk

The Club are delighted to confirm that this year’s shirt sponsors are once again Budgens of Whitstable, the High Street store open from 7am through 8pm. They also offer home delivery. Visit Binny and his team at Budgens!

Jim Ward, Ian Pulman, Gary Johnson, Simon Pettit and Danny Ward Other than sponsorship, our income streams rely on gate revenue, sponsorship, commercial opportunities and the generosity of the few. It’s a massive task to run such a club for the benefit of the Town, so why not come along and show your support next season?
