All Saints Church All Saints Whitstable is a delightful location for your baptism or wedding or renewal of vows ceremony. We also have a large hall which is suitable for many groups or for an event you may be planning. Located in the popular Church Street area of Whitstable, between the Thanet Way and the railway station, All Saints has stood on the same spot since the 12th century. The tower was known as a “staple in the medieval period and because it is of a light coloured stone it was known as the White Staple. From this the name Whitstable emerged from which the town gets its name. Many still come to worship here each week and there are all sorts of community groups from drop in cafes to film clubs to singing groups. Please visit www.allsaintswhitstable.com for more information on the life of the church. Two events coming up this summer are the popular Summer Fete on Saturday 25th June from 2pm to 4pm in the Vicarage garden with all the popular stalls and activities, and our famous Pet Blessing on Sunday 14th August at 10am in the Vicarage garden (now in its 10th year). You are warmly invited to either event. Do contact the Vicar, Simon, on 01227 275947 or via email at tillotsons@gmail.com if you have any questions.

Canterbury Photographic Society We believe that the first meeting of local photographers took place in Canterbury in 1898. By all accounts they met to share ideas, methods, compare new equipment and perhaps most important of all to discuss why some pictures were visually more exciting than others. Today our club still meets for the same purpose! Our members are of all ages and from all walks of life, interested in all aspects of photography from film to digital, from traditional landscapes to contemporary images. Members’ photographs have been exhibited nationally and internationally. Our aim is to help photographers improve their image-making, both in terms of art and technique. We meet at Tyler Hill during our season which runs from September to May and during the summer break we arrange local outings when members can come along and take part in various visits to places where we take pictures maybe for the next seasons competitions or just for our own enjoyment. Usually we have to finish the evening with a visit the local tavern to discuss the evening’s events! We have a varied programme of events and can cater for all abilities from absolute beginner to more advanced photographers but we all continue to learn from each other and from our varied and interesting selection of speakers and judges that come along to our meetings. Various competitions are held throughout the season and you are not forced to take part but you are encouraged to join in. Most members enjoy the competitive aspect.

Competitions are normally one of two types, print or projected digital images with both set and open subjects This might change if we are holding a battle against other Clubs when both types of image are usually required. We often arrange workshops where more experienced members share their skills and enjoy various talks from interesting speakers Although not purporting to be experts we have members who are particularly interested in certain subjects and aspects of photography and you are sure to enjoy a warm welcome and usually be introduced to someone who shares a similar interest in our hobby. Amongst our membership we try to keep up to date with the latest trends, ideas and technology and share our knowledge freely with others. Public exhibitions are held annually and this year we have three in Canterbury where members are able to display their work. We invite and encourage work from schools and colleges and are keen to engage with the local community, we have members from not just Canterbury but from many of the surrounding districts too. If you would like to get involved with our Club why not visit our website for a taste of some of our members work and up to date news of what’s been happening and do come along free as a guest to a meeting to see firsthand what we are all about, you are most welcome. www.canterburyphotographicsociety.co.uk Our Facebook page ‘Canterbury Photographic Society’ is also available to view and several members have their pictures displayed on their individual Flickr sites. Whitstable Oyster Festival Whitstable Oyster Festival are pleased to announce three-headline shows at The Shuck this coming July. Following on from triumphant shows in 2014 and 15 we are extremely excited to welcome back The Cuban Brothers on Friday 22nd July. However this year they are returning mob handed bringing with them the man who coined the phrase “rare

groove”, a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, Norman Jay MBE. Also joining the party will be BAM (Jungle Brothers) the first hip-hop group to use a housemusic producer. The Jungle Brothers are also said to have pioneered the fusion of jazz and hip-hop. Early bird tickets sold out extremely quickly for this show, the remaining advance tickets are priced at £14 and £18 on the door. Music pioneer, contemporary/graffiti artist, drum & bass icon, DJ, actor and producer Goldie will be performing at The Shuck on Friday 29th July. While appearing in critically acclaimed films and on TV, he’s still found the time to oversee the growth of his very own drum & bass label Metalheadz. A total original, a multi talented shape shifter, who’s sold more than 3 million records worldwide. A hand full of early bird tickets are still available for this show priced at £12 after which advance sales will be £14 and £18 on the door.

Cuban Brothers

Lastly coming back to the WOF stage is the Comedy Impro All-Stars and after last years success at The Shuck they return with two new additions to the team. Having appeared on ‘Have I Got News for You’ and ‘Whose Line Is It Anyway’ we are incredibly happy to welcome Steve Steen

The History of the Whitstable Oyster The festival is relatively new, having started in 1985, but is draws reference from voracious and longstanding traditions of the area including the Blessing of the Waters and the Landing of the Oysters. Most notably the festival is based on the service of thanksgiving held by local fisherman that took place around the feast day of St. James Compostella, a tradition dating back to Norman times The Whitstable Oyster Festival celebrates this and the customs realised by the oystermen. To give 10

Please mention

you some logistics, oysters have been farmed in Whitstable for centuries and became highly regulated in 1793. The Whitstable Oyster Fishery Company was set up by an Act of Parliament in 1897, and still runs the oyster trade today. Such tradition and regulation filters down to the practices of the oystermen. The British native oyster spawns from May to August, during which time they are left alone by the fishermen, hence the traditional closed season for oyster eating in any month with an “r” in it. to the show for 2016. The Impro Show will this year also be graced by former ‘Perrier Comedy Award’ winner for Best Newcomer and recurring guest panellist on ‘Mock the Week’, Milton Jones. Very limited early bird tickets are still available for the Impro All Stars priced at £16 after which advance sales will be £18 and £22 on the door. are farmed year-round and it is these that are available during the festival. The Romans loved British oysters, cultivated them on the north Kent coast and elsewhere, ate them in great quantities and exported them to the rest of the Roman Empire. After the Romans left, oysters went out of fashion, and Britons did not start eating them again until the eighth century. Thankfully, the resurgence of the culinary trend has given us an occasion to celebrate oyster eating and other forms of lifestyle and entertainment annually. Please mention

Train your brain at Bright Young Things

Summer….. Sun, sea and, for many children, exams. Although it is important not to put too much pressure on children, passing exams is important, to get into first-choice schools, obtain university places, and, ultimately, secure worthwhile employment. As our children prepare for the Kent Test, SATs, GCSEs and A Levels, Bright Young Things Canterbury Tuition Centre is here to support and stretch young minds.

We run weekly courses throughout the year, from Small Group Maths & English, 11 Plus courses, one-to-one GCSE and A Level tuition, and university interview preparation assistance. For Year 5 students looking to sit the Kent Test, the summer holidays are a crucial time, and we've designed a special timetable for this period, with mock assessments and revision workshops running throughout the week. Of course, our holiday timetable isn’t aimed solely at Year 5s. We know school holidays can be a logistical nightmare for parents, and we are pleased to be able to help alleviate some of the strain with our daily Brain Gym sessions, running from 9am to 4pm, which keep children’s minds active and ensure their literacy and numeracy skills continue to develop. We also run a series of weekly workshops, in creative writing, philosophy, and debating, and dramatic storytelling sessions for younger children. Bright Young Things Canterbury Tuition Centre is committed to providing children with the confidence and ability to think independently and analytically. We like to create enjoyable learning experiences and our friendly approach encourages children to ask questions and become fully involved in their bespoke programmes, thus taking ownership of topics and gaining in confidence. Dealing with mental health issues The NHS states that 1 in 4 of us will experience some sort of mental health issue with 4-10% of us in the UK experiencing depression within our lifetime. It is becoming increasingly evident that mental health is an important subject within society, however is still an area of health care and wellbeing that is affected by negative stigma and discrimination on a daily basis, leaving many people embarrassed or feeling alone. Currently we are seeing increasing numbers of people being diagnosed with mental health related issues, such as anxiety and depression caused by a variety of factors including: work related stress, low self-esteem, bereavement and relationship issues. Mental health illness can affect anyone of any age or background at any point in their lives. For example recent research shows that depression affects around 22% of men and 28% of women aged 65 years and over within the UK, and suicide is the most common cause of death for men aged 20-49 years in England and Wales. Although these statistics alone are shocking, it’s important to remember that if you are suffering from mental health issues that you are not alone. Sometimes mental health illness can be hard to recognise and can be equally as difficult to talk about. One way of dealing with emotional distress and mental health related issues is to speak to a counsellor. Talking to a counsellor can provide just the help you need to work through personal difficulties and find solutions to problems, which are often very sensitive and can be long-standing in nature. Counsellors are trained to listen and are able to help you explore your feelings, thoughts and behaviours in a safe, confidential and nonjudgmental way.

Do you see yourself in any of the following situations? • Feeling down and low, anxious, worried or over-stressed about something • Suffering from panic attacks, a traumatic experience or phobia • Going through a crisis, bereavement, redundancy, early retirement or illness • Experiencing obsessive compulsives thoughts and behaviours • Having to face a separation or divorce and wanting some help • Suffering from the effects of physical, emotional or sexual abuse • Wanting someone to share your thoughts and feelings with to help see a ways through • Wanting to talk about other issues in confidence If so we may be able to help you… FCS Talking Therapies has been established for 20 years within the local community, priding ourselves on ensuring our clients receive the most supportive service available to support them through any situation they may be going through. Our aim is not to only help treat those with mental health related issues, but to also help the community understand the importance of positive mental health and for mental health to be considered just as important as physical health without any negative stigma. We offer a free NHS IAPT counselling service to clients aged 18+ within Swale, Canterbury and Coastal Kent areas, as well as an option to seek long term or couples therapy within the service. Carrie-Anne Heath Assistant Clinical Director - FCS Talking Therapies

Clients can self refer to our service by calling us directly on 01795 591019 or by enquiring through our website www.favershamcounsellingservice.co.uk (Statistics within article are available on www.mentalhealth.org.uk)

Dates for your diary Regatta

Whitstable and Herne Bay Lions Club have preparations well under way for this year’s Regatta on August 6th and 7th; two days packed with fun, the live music of various bands, and a magnificent array of stalls and sideshows along Tankerton Slopes, plus all the fun of the fair brought by Traditional Fairground Amusements. Free entertainment for the children will include Uncle Myles’ Punch and Judy and Magic Shows. The EKHO re-enactment group will be back, the Dog Show and the Flypast by the Historic Spitfire plus an aerial display by Trig aerobatics.

At sea, Whitstable Yacht Club will be organising the sailing events and the local Lifeboat Service will demonstrate their skills at a seaborne rescue. There is also the return of the popular “Greasy Pole” contest.

Mike Shaw of Whitstable and Herne Bay Lions Club, said, ‘Each year people come out and support us, and we are very grateful to them. Although it involves a great deal of work behind the scenes, it also means that we can raise funds for the disadvantaged, whilst providing two days of fun for local people and visitors to Whitstable.

Classic Car Show The popular Classic Car Show will be held on Sunday, 21st August, on the slopes at Tankerton, Whitstable. Last year there were more than seven hundred vehicles on the beautiful greens overlooking the sea. Whitstable Parkrun Juniors Whitstsble Parkrun Juniors is a weekly event which takes place every Sunday starting at 0930 at the kiosk on Tankerton Slopes, opposite the Marine Hotel. It is a free event for children aged 4 to 14 years of age who may run with a parent if they wish. We do find that as the children grew more confident after a few weeks they leave mum or dad standing and no longer which to be accompanied. The course is safe with plenty of volunteer marshals to make sure that no child is left without anybody to turn to if they need help or just a word of encouragement. Our run

directors (those in charge on the day) are all DBS checked and we have at least one first aider ready to assist if necessary. We start with a mini pre run briefing and then the children, mums and dads do a warm up before being given the call to ‘go’. The event is free but children will need a barcode which can be obtained free from www.parkrun.com/register which they must bring with them to each event they take part in to ensure they get a time. There are rewards to! After completing half a marathon (11 runs), marathon (21 runs) ultra marathon (50 runs) they are rewarded with a wrist bands.

The campaign to repair and widen Church In this edition of 5 minutes with… we talk with Andy Wade about the issues around Church Lane, what can be done to resolve this and how the local community can help support the cause. How long have you lived in Seasalter and how long has this been a problem? I have only lived in Seasalter for about 18 months, but I’ve always been local so have used Church Lane over the years. As far back as I can remember, it has been a nightmare to negotiate. The fact that it’s been neglected over a period of many years just adds to its on-going poor condition. Has anything been done in the past to address the problems with Church lane? I know I’m not the only person to take the Council to task over Church Lane, it has been inspected before and deemed “not bad enough” to do anything about! For those who use the road daily, that statement is truly ridiculous! It’s not just the surface of the road and the potholes, it’s the overall width, and the way the passing bays have been built with a huge high kerb. For those in their cars facing a large van or lorry, there’s just no place to go without causing some kind of damage to the car, be it a scuffed wheel or scratched paintwork.

01233 840624 CLEANSING SERVICES LTD

The largest independently owned liquid waste management company in the UK

Andy Wade Is there a lot of support from the local community to get this problem sorted and what would be the best solution? Many of the almost 600 motorists who have signed my petition have expressed their opinion that traffic lights are the answer, but in reality, at peak times, that would not be viable because the volume of traffic would be backed up onto the old Thanet Way, which would be immensely dangerous. Once the new shopping complex is open, the traffic will be increased significantly, so in my opinion traffic lights wouldn’t work. I think the ideal solution would be priority passing. That way, all traffic coming from the Thanet way end will have priority over traffic travelling up towards it. The traffic can flow freely from the danger of queueing on the slip road. You would need to put at least four stop/flow points in due to the length of the road to avoid “jumpers”, but this can only work if the road is wide enough, so the hedgerow needs cutting back either side. It’s wasted space, and deep enough that it wouldn’t encroach on anyone living behind. I can’t imagine anyone on the caravan parks objecting, they have to use the road too.

All aspects of Landscaping work undertaken: Decking, Patios, Driveways, Fencing, Block Paving, Brick and Stone Work, Ponds, Planting and more all finished to a high standard at competitive rates

Lane, Seasalter Should there be provisions made for pedestrians?

Whitstable

Magazine

Repair & widen Church Lane, Seasalter!

Yes I think there should be a footpath on one side, for the pensioners, dog walkers or school children who have to walk up that road, it’s only a matter of time before there’s an accident. The level of support continues to grow daily, with the petition well on its way to 600 signatures. People feel strongly about it. It’s a terrible, unacceptable and dangerous road. Many women are really intimidated by angry aggressive drivers on a daily basis, and that’s fact! That’s the feedback I’m getting. Is it causing damage to people’s vehicles with the road conditions? The damage to vehicles is another major concern. I’ve had an alloy wheel ruined by a pothole and several bad scratches. Also tyres and suspension are being damaged. We all pay road tax, we all pay council tax. It’s our right to get this road improved. Our absolute right! We pay for it! In short, if people want something done, they should sign the petition and share the link so others can too. It’s time for action. We are fed up with being ignored and fobbed off with silly excuses and the blind eye approach to a big problem.

Confused about the I’m sure that I’m not the only one confused about the up-coming EU Referendum on June 23 and the pros and cons of staying or leaving the EU. On the face of it, Britain leaving the EU and becoming an independent state with free trade and more control over its legislation, fishing, borders and future seems like a good idea. The complexity of a Brexit might not be as clear cut, or as one sided as I thought. Like many people in the UK, I’m now frantically reading up and questioning both sides of the argument as the referendum draws closer. How we vote, and the long term affects will have implications for generations to come. One of the major concerns and one that has undoubtedly forced the government to call a referendum, is the issue of immigration. As a member state of the EU, there is a freedom of movement of people from other EU states and one argument for exiting the EU would be that we, as a country would regain control of our borders and have more say about the regulation governing immigration. There is a counter argument that thousands of Britain’s travel around Europe every year, whether it be on business or holiday, and this would not be as easy to do if Britain were to become independent. Do we also rely to some

of these migrant workers to keep the cost of our manufacturing and agriculture cost down? If you were to look at a proportion of unskilled workers in manufacturing, farming, production etc are these migrant workers. So if we left the EU and tightened our immigration to the extent that some would like us to, would we see a shortage of workers? This shortfall could be taken up with English workers that would perhaps be demanding higher rates of pay and better working conditions. There is also the question whether Britain has lost its identity and by leaving the EU would we begin to get this back. Are we “Great Britain” with our morals, history and patriotism or are we “Little Britain” a subservient state of the bigger European Union? There are concerns that the EU dictates so much of the bureaucracy and red tape in this country, agriculture, farming, fishing etc and it appears that we are paying £55 million a day in EU membership for the privilege. After a lot of searching through the internet, I’m struggling to see that we are actually gaining financially as

EU Referendum? a direct result of this. It seems there is still a deficit on our investment. The EU does fund some of the poorer communities with grants and subsidies, but surely we could just inject some of the £55 Million a day we pay in membership directly in to this? The pro-Europe campaigners say that if we stay in the EU is we are viewed as a much more attractive investment for other countries, we get more of a vote of confidence for investment and trade and that by exciting the EU and going it alone. They feel that a Brexit could see us with years of economic uncertainty and that it’s better the devil you know. Britain, is at the moment is one of the strongest economies in Europe and even the world, so would we be risking this if we left the EU? There have been benefits in being part of the EU, we have better working conditions, cleaner beaches and environment, but equally there have been the negatives of being dictated to by Brussels on what we can and can’t do in our own country and having to follow their rules and regulations. We will all get to have our say in the referendum on June 23, so make sure you choose wisely with an informed decision.
