Living a Better Life with Parkinson’s Disease April usually marks the beginning of warmer weather, longer sunlight days, and the end to the long hard winter. It is also a time to recognize Parkinson’s disease and 1+ million individuals inflicted with the disease. Parkinson’s is a disease that never ends but can be managed. That is why it is so important to learn how to live with the disease and to have a medical plan in place from the time of diagnosis. By implementing a plan early, it improves one’s quality of life while living with Parkinson’s. Not doing so has major negative consequences to ones’ quality of life. Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative muscular disease that affects movement. Basically, Parkinson’s is a loss of dopamine neurons of the brain that causes an interruption of signals from your brain to your muscles. A proper medical plan that focuses on muscle memory and movement along with medication can actually train those signals to get through.

One classic symptom people experience is tremors, but there are many more symptoms such as stiffness, muscle freezing, and balance issues. In the later stages of Parkinson’s disease, a person’s voice weakens, and memory can be affected. By implementing a comprehensive medical plan including exercise activities and proper diet, these symptoms can be minimized, reducing a person’s risk for hospitalizations.

We know that the lack of focus and motivation caused by this disease makes it hard for a person to stay on point with their long-term plan. Often fatigue affects one’s motivation and energy level to even get up and do their regular activities of daily living. This also affects their loves ones who struggle to get the person involved in doing the daily exercises needed in the plan.

Often families call us at Family Caregivers Network asking, “What can I do? What are my options?”

There are resources and treatments available for individuals and family members right here in our local community. • Family Caregivers Network offers a specialized Parkinson’s program, started in 2012, to keep an individual engaged in exercises and activities aimed to reduce hospitalizations and relapses in their disease. They work with your doctor and/or outpatient therapist to implement the right plan for you. www.family-caregivers.com/parkinsons-programs • The LSVT Big and Loud is a specialized trademark therapy program offered at area outpatient rehab facilities, such as Good Shepherd Rehab. This is a fantastic resource for individuals struggling with Parkinson’s disease. www.goodshepherdrehab.org/condition/lee-silverman-voicetraining-lsvt-big-and-loud/

• Family Caregivers offers a monthly support group specifically directed towards helping family members effected by their loved one’s disease. • The Parkinson’s Foundation on-line provides invaluable resources. www.parkinson.org
