Easy Pill Dispensing
By Marion O’Neil
Getting your dog to swallow a pill can be more than challenging – it can be impossible! Finding treats to hide pills in effectively is also difficult. We’ve tried pill guns, cheese, liverwurst, peanut butter, and even cream cheese. Dogs are incredibly sneaky when it comes to taking meds. Our dogs have eaten every piece of kibble in their bowls, except the doctored pill. They have also held medication in their mouths, then spit it out. We have seen it all!
There are store-bought options specifically for wrapping pills, but they’re pretty expensive. If you have a pup that needs daily medications, buying pre-made pill pockets can really add up. Fortunately, making homemade treats you can hide pills in are super easy and inexpensive. These two recipes are noncook and include just a few ingredients.
Here’s the deal breaker, first make two balls. The first ball has the hidden pill. The second ball is empty. Have one ball in your left hand and the second in your right hand. Show both balls to the dog at the same time. Now, give her the pill ball first while you’re showing her the second ball. The dog typically gobbles down the first ball wanting the second ball right away (they’re that good). From experience, these have worked on our very picky medication-hating dogs.
Peanut Butter Pockets:
Ingredients
1/2 cup of milk or water
1/2 cup of peanut butter (no xylitol)
1 cup of flour (any kind)
Instructions: Combine the ingredients.
Tear off a small chunk and form around your pet’s medication.
This recipe can be stored in the refrigerator for a week or kept in the freezer for a longer amount of time.
Peanut Butter and Pumpkin Balls
Ingredients
1/2 cup of peanut butter (no xylitol)
1 cup of pumpkin puree (not pie filling)
3 tablespoons of honey
2 1/2 cups of rolled oats
Instructions
Place parchment paper over a baking sheet.
In a bowl, combine peanut butter, pumpkin, honey and rolled oats.
Tear off chunks and roll into little balls placing on the baking sheet.
Refrigerate until balls have hardened enough to hold their shape. Can be stored up to 3 weeks in an airtight container and the refrigerator, 3 months if stored in the freezer.
If you’re still are having problems, ask your vet about liquid flavored compound meds in place of pills.

HEALTHY living
Cut Back on Added Sugars.
Healthy eating is important at every age. Eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, protein foods, and dairy or fortified soy alternatives. When deciding what to eat or drink, choose options that are full of nutrients and limited in added sugars, saturated fat, and sodium. Start with these tips:
Think about your drinks.
Balance your meal by drinking water instead of sugary drinks like soda, lemonade, or sports drinks. Try some sparkling water with a lemon wedge or a small piece of fresh fruit.
Enjoy a sprinkle or two.
Skip the sugar and top your coffee with a dash of cinnamon, nutmeg, or cocoa powder instead. This adds a little variety to the flavor of your coffee.
Satisfy your sweet tooth.
Indulge in a naturally sweet dessert—fruit! Enjoy a fresh fruit salad, baked apples with cinnamon, or a piece of fruit right out of the fridge.
Split the sweets.
Share dessert with a friend. Half a pastry or slice of cake means only half the added sugars (and calories) for each of you.
Pick lower sugar options.
Choose packaged foods that have less or no added sugars such as plain low-fat or fat-free yogurt, unsweetened applesauce, or canned fruit packed in its own juice or water.
Check the label.
Added sugars are now prominently displayed on the Nutrition Facts label of packaged foods. Use this information to compare added sugars on similar products. Keep in mind that there are many names for added sugars, such as fructose, dextrose, maple syrup, and cane juice.

This might sound weird to some of you, but there are few seasons I get more excited about than Salad Season! Salad has a season? Yes! It is located directly between soup season and pumpkin season, which is well, now! Unlike soup season though, salad season can be a little tricky. Sometimes you don’t have enough toppings, or dressing, or everything in it is a little wilty and the textures are not texturing. Or when I try to make them at home, they just never hit as hard, just always missing a little somethin’ something. If this sounds familiar, let me put you onto my new favorite find! I recently stumbled upon Main Street Salads and was blown away! I had the most delicious buffalo chicken salad of my life, and they didn’t even judge me when I asked to add craisins to it. (Try it) There are so many topping and veggie options and each one comes with a warm roll on the side.
Luckily for our safety, Main Street Salads toppings hit the BOTTOM!! Each salad is crafted by friendly employees who toss the toppings, lettuce and dressings of your choice before it even hits the container it’s served to you in. They don’t skimp either, I had a very generous portion of toppings left AFTER my lettuce was gone! Which of course I ate happily, because toppings are the best part. Everything was so fresh, so tasty, with many delicious combos and they even had a Cantaloupe tea which I was hesitant about but it was absolutely delectable! Salads come in the option of a full salad, or you can do a half portion for a kids salad, which is still huge and filling! If you are someone who does enjoy salads, they also have soup and sandwiches, which are absolutely out of this world. I split a chicken caprese and pesto sandwich with a friend, and we were both raving about it long after it was finished!
Main Street Salads is located at 345 Main St, Harleysville, and I couldn’t speak more highly of this restaurant. You guys know I love supporting small businesses but it’s even more special when that business does it well, and you can tell they are passionate about serving the best and the most fresh. Get out there and get your salads, my friends! Tell them Tor sent ya!
