While I was visiting a friend the other day, I observed in horror as one of the most obnoxious behaviors a dog could offer unfolded right before my eyes. Not only was her dog Demand Barking but my friend was reinforcing it! Yep, that little bugger was barking at my friend because she wanted a cookie. Little Sophia the Yorkie knew exactly where those cookies were stashed. She parked her self right in front of the cookie jar and she was not budging until she got her cookie. The more my friend ignored her dog, the loud er the little devil dog became. After a couple minutes of Sophia’s temper tantrum, my friend laughed and said “Isn’t she so cute and smart that she can tell me she wants a cookie” and then gave her the cookie. I know we all wish our dogs could talk sometimes but be careful what you wish for. I can only imagine what my dog would say, “I love you, too; come on scratch my butt; let me out; let me in; what, that kibble again; once more around the block, James, throw the ball;, you little wimp; oops, sorry I have gas.” Most people think it is amazing that their dog knows exactly where the cookie is, plus can communicate that feeling. Then there are some folks like me who think it’s pretty rude to be barked at. Hey, I’m not perfect; I have been known to occasionally bribe my dogs with the words “cookies” to get their attention. I regularly treat my dog with a cookie – if she asks nicely. I think it is so cute that my dog can sit nicely in front of the cookie jar, glance at me, then back to the cookie jar as if to say “please, mom.” I will ask her “would you like a cookie?” So when she sits and is quiet as if is your dog telling you what to do? Not the end of the road for walking your reactive dog

There’s nothing better on a summer night than to leash up your dog and go to the park for a walk. That is, unless your dog turns into a dog you do not rec ognize. If your dog suddenly begins to growl, bark, or lunge toward another dog on leash, your evening walk has now turned into a summer nightmare. You are not alone. Many dogs become reactive on leash when another dog approaches. You may find yourself pulling your dog back toward you while yelling at them to knock it off! Now there is a lunging and snarling dog with a frantic owner. Whew! You can see how this is a no-win situation. Those approaching may see a barking or lunging leashed dog and instantly believe that your dog is aggressive. This behavior does not mean that your dog is aggressive. If your dog is normally good around people and most other dogs, but your dog’s demean or changes when on leash, what you are most likely dealing with is leash reactivity. Leash reactivity is when a dog overreacts to a stimu lus while they are on a leash. Dogs can be “reactive” towards any kind of trigger they have a negative asso ciation with such as other dogs, cars, or people. Dog manners are different from people manners. It is rude in dog language for two dogs to look head on at one another. Dogs would much rather meet gradually and use their nose to decide if they like each other or not. Dogs like to circle one another first and they cannot do that while on leash. This past January, Joanna called me needing just such help for her dog Gunner. A few months prior, Gunner was attacked while on leash by a large dog that was off leash. Ever since then Gunner has become reac tive toward some other dogs when out for a walk. Jo anna wanted help with Gunner’s leash reactivity be cause she planned to bring Gunner on her vacation in August. The method that we used to help Gunner is known as Counterconditioning and Desensitization. Counterconditioning means “changing the dog’s emotional response, feelings or attitude toward a stimulus.” Desensitization is a gradual exposure to situations or stimuli that would normally bring on the undesirable behavior. In Gunner’s case the trigger stimulus was other dogs approaching on leash. It is a slow process, but it has great rewards for the owner and dog. We first trained Gunner to “look” at Joanna and to “touch” her hand when cued or asked to do so. This helped Gunner to keep his focus on Jo anna. When he did look or touch as cued, he was re

Gunner is ready for his Vacation!!

warded. Next, we trained Gunner to “find it” by drop ping high-value treats, like cut up hotdogs or chicken, by Joanne’s feet so Gunner had to look down and for age for the goodies. This new skill was used anytime Gunner noticed a dog approaching. It helped Gunner to keep his focus right where he was standing. We paired these new behaviors and rewards, with some distance from other dogs, to help change Gunner’s emotional response. Now Gunner will look at Joanna when he sees a dog approach and receives a yum my treat instead of lunging toward the approaching dog. Gunner has made great progress over the last 6 months and Joanna feels ready to walk him in the park and to take him on vacation in August. Joanna’s planning ahead and consistent training helped Gun ner to get the training he needed to ensure a happy vacation for both of them.

I can help your reactive dog to become a better walking buddy. To get started please schedule your FREE 30-Minute phone consult with me to discuss your dog and learn more about the training program. Visit: www.yourbestbuddydogtraining.com or email me at: yourbestbuddydogtraining@gmail.com

By Bryan Fioriglio Did you know that falls are one of the leading causes of hospital admissions in aging adults? No one likes to think about falls, yet they happen as we age. So what can we do to prevent a fall?

Fall Prevention in Aging

What steps can we take to ensure our safety in our home? Lets discuss some ways to know if you are at risk of having a fall and effective tips on how to prevent them.

Tips for fall prevention: Have a home safety assessment done by a nurse or therapist. Keep all routine doctor visits.

Dehydration – This is one of the leading causes of falls and one of the easiest to prevent.

Loss of Balance – This can be caused by several factors in aging individuals, but the one most clinically noted is arthritis of the knee or hip joints. – Cognitive impairment caused by Dementia or Alzheimer’s disease such as, disorientation, hallucinations, or the inability to accurately determine changes in floor texture, color, or elevation can cause falls.

• If you are taking 4 or more medications have your balance checked by your doctor or therapist.

• Have your vision checked by an eye doctor.

Factors for knowing if you are at risk of falls: – low/high blood sugar, neuropathy, and blurry vision are all symptoms of diabetes that create a greater fall risk for those living with the disease.
