December in The Upper Perkiomen Valley can only mean one thing… The Hometown Christmas Parade! Started back in 1952 by Kuraey Spaar, the parade ran until 1989. About a decade or so later, it was reintroduced by sons Tom and Dennis Spaar, and has been running continually ever since. My family and I will bundle in our warmest scarves and mittens, grab a few of our pups, and head over to our favorite viewing spot with some hot cocoa. It’s a tradition we never miss.

The parade always runs on the first Sunday of the month, and starts at 1pm. Grab your favorite hot beverage and make the Upper Perkiomen Hometown Christmas parade a part of your holiday traditions!

The parade traverses the 2 mile route along Main Street in Red hill, through Pennsburg and East Greenville, ending at the East Greenville Fire Company. Gleeful children are sure to see Santa and Mrs. Claus in their horse drawn sleigh before heading down to Santa Land at St. Mark’s church for photos. Along with Santa and Mrs. Claus you will see animals of all kinds, from horses, ponies, dogs and goats right on down to llamas and alpacas. In fact, what makes this parade truly special are that no motorized vehicles of any kind are in the parade. In keeping with tradition, Santa’s helpers will give oranges to parade watchers along the route, a tradition to honor Christmases past before refrigeration when an orange was a special treat.

She does not look or act that age. She was pretty overweight at 34 pounds, but she is doing very well with weight loss just by going for walks every day with her foster mom. Researching the past is a great way not only to appreciate the things we have today, but to understand what our parents and grandparents experienced during these same winter months years ago. Candace Perry, Curator of Collections at the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center Celebrating Community

in Pennsburg, is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to Christmas and holiday traditions in years past. Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s take a look at just what the Upper Perk area was like many years ago during this festive season. With our area strongly dominated by ccmonthly.com | 24

families of Pennsylvania German descent well into the 20th century, there were some popular traditions that were more common in this area, explains Perry. “Specifically, that would be the construction of a Christmas putz, a tradition that started with the Moravians and became very popular among others locally, especially in the early 20th century. The putz is a Christmas garden, or Christmas village layout. Originally, they were chiefly nativity scenes, then were more secularized and could include anything the imagination could dream up. Roadside America, out on route 78, started out decades ago as a putz.” Going broke on Black Friday isn’t exactly what our forefathers had in mind when it came to their gift lists. “There were some local small stores (the Dunkin Donuts location in Pennsburg was a dry goods store called Gilbert & Hevener) in the early to mid-20th century, which certainly had some kinds of things that people might give as gifts, such as clothing and shoes, but probably any actual shopping had to be done in larger towns,” advises Perry. “Hess’s was of course a destination for anyone who lived in a certain radius from Allentown. Their toy department was incredible and people also shopped at five and dime stores, especially for decorations.” Some local Christmas celebrations also included the `Belsnickel,” states Perry. This very ancient figure, whose roots come from German-speaking Europe, “was frequently a man or even a group of young men dressed in tattered clothing (sometimes furs) with a mask or painted face that came around to houses to give the good children a gift of an orange Celebrating Community

or other treat and to whip the naughty children with a switch. ‘Belsnickel’ literally translates to ‘Nicholas in furs,’ so the character was one of the many folk culture gift bringers in Europe. He also sort of relates to the Mummers in Philadelphia, though from a Germanic tradition, not Irish.” One major change throughout history is where the focus has shifted in regards to where the importance lies during the holiday itself. “The churches were often the center of the celebrations, especially for groups such as the Mennonites who try very hard to maintain the meaning of the day,” explains Perry. “That’s not to say that people didn’t decorate and buy gifts, it’s just that the emphasis was different. Many more people attended their church services.” Thinking back to her own childhood Perry recalls, “Our church needed the overflow seating on Christmas Eve in the 60s and into the 80s. There were Christmas pageants and parties at churches that were very well attended. I think this was common to everywhere. Also, people decorated the outside of their homes a lot more. Public decorating changed a lot also, meaning how municipalities decorated.” No matter how you celebrate, take a moment to appreciate all of the history that has gone into the formation of how the Upper Perkiomen Valley celebrates this holiday season. New Year’s Resolutions THAT LEAD TO LASTING CHANGE

It’s that time of year again – just one page left on the 2018 calendar -- January 1st, 2019 will be here soon. Are you planning to make new year’s resolutions this year? There is something kind of magical about the new year -- it’s a fresh start and we often have lots of ideas and motivation to make important changes in our lives that last until… oh, maybe about January 14th. It’s not that we don’t want to change. For most people, it’s just that we expect too much of ourselves, are too hard on ourselves, and we tend to give up when we slip up. If you want this year to be different, consider these tips for making resolutions that lead to lasting change: • Ask yourself what you want to change and why you want to change it. Think about all of the positive reasons why you deserve to meet your goal and imagine how your life will be better when you do. Don’t focus on what you don’t like about yourself – self-criticism actually makes it harder for people to change because it’s painful. For example, if you want to get in shape, think about how great you’ll feel when you exercise regularly – more energy, better sleep, happier mood – really focus on the benefits that are most important to you. • Write it down. Just writing a few sentences about your goal and why you deserve to meet it starts to build motivation, and can keep it going later if you start to lose momentum. • Pay attention. Notice what is happening in your life right now that is holding you back,

and come up with ways to get past those obstacles. If your schedule is packed and it looks like there’s no time to exercise, look for where it might fit in – a walk around your office complex at lunch could be a great place to start. • Make a plan. Start with small, measurable, do-able goals that fit your life as it is right now. If you’ve been spending most of your time sitting behind a desk or hanging on the couch, a good goal could be taking a 10 minute walk, 3 days a week. • Figure out what you need to make it happen. If your goal is to walk for 10 minutes but you don’t have sneakers, it’s time to go shopping. Thinking of quitting smoking? Schedule a visit with your doctor for advice – a nicotine patch or support group could make things a lot easier. • Schedule it in. Pick a start date, put it in your calendar, set a reminder. As it gets closer, picture yourself meeting your goal and feeling good about it when you do. • Track your progress. Make notes on your calendar or use a habit change app like Habit Bull. Give yourself credit when you make it happen, and encourage yourself when you don’t, accepting that setbacks are part of the process. • Reward yourself. Choose something you really enjoy and that’s meaningful to you – small rewards like taking a nap, spending time with a friend, or going to that movie you’ve been wanting to see can go a long way to keeping you on track. • Whatever you do, don’t give up. Over time, with patience and persistence your smaller goals will add up to bigger changes that improve your life in 2019. It’s going to be a great year!

Monitor greetings carefully. Your dog may be just as excited as you are to have friends and family around for the holidays, but that’s no excuse for jumping or barking at every arrival. You can teach him to hand target then sit as an acceptable way to say hello. If he’s prone to jumping or zooming around during greetings, consider keeping him on leash until everyone has arrived and he’s calmed down.

I hope you will be including your dog on the list of things you’re thankful for this year. You and your guests will be even more thankful if he’s on his best behavior during the holidays. Here are simple ways to help your dog mind his manners on during this holiday season. Designate a dog handler. If your dog is prone to problematic behaviors like mouthing, stealing, and overly rambunctious when guests arrive, you both may benefit from having someone watch him during the festivities. A designated handler can be helpful if you are concerned about your guests’ behavior around your dog, particularly if you have small children. Interactions between kids and dogs should always be closely supervised. If your handler needs a break to eat or socialize, make your dog comfortable in his crate or in a dog-safe part of your house that is off-limits to guests. Celebrating Community

Help your dog be a good host. Your guests may be happy to see your dog, but they may not want him climbing into their laps or leaning against them. If your dog is an attention hound who adores the spotlight and will do anything possible to get guests to pet or play with him, such as pawing or attention barking, redirect his attention to a food puzzle or favorite toy, or by asking him to do tricks for guests who are dying to spend time with him. Say no to begging and food stealing. Faced with an unattended table of hors d’oeuvres or an abandoned plate of feast remnants, even the best-behaved dog may give in to temptation. Mooching from dinner guests is never good manners. Careful supervision and a refresher of the “leave it,”“drop it” and “off ” commands. Some pups may need to be kept on leash during dinner or in a dog-safe space away from the festivities. Ask your guests not to feed your dog. With the holidays quickly approaching, we are nearing the time of year where many families get together to celebrate. Family traditions, passed down through generations, are an important way to keep memories alive. Traditions like setting out milk and cookies for Santa or putting food out for the reindeer can make lasting impressions on our children. Looking back on my own family’s holiday traditions, I’m filled with a nostalgic blend of happiness and foggy remembrance. I remember every Christmas Eve we would make a huge plate of crackers, cheese and Lebanon bologna. My favorite part of it was the crackers shaped like butterflies. Even today seeing those butterfly shaped crackers at the store brings back those warm memories. Now that I have kids of my own (three boys), we do things like Elf on a Shelf, helping to make sure the elf has a good hiding spot each day so he can report my boys behavior back to Santa. My mother lives many states away in Alabama, but

she still has her own tradition she calls the “Christmas Eve Box”. She wraps multiple small presents, usually fun Christmas themed activities the boys can do, and we unwrap a new gift every little bit throughout the day. The box finishes with matching pajamas, a Christmas movie and hot chocolate. The excitement and happiness of my children as we create new traditions that my children will remember when they are adults is something I truly look forward to each year.

Love Upper Perk is a movement to care about our community. Love Upper Perk is based out of the Upper Perk Community Life Center. The goal is to create a site that hosts and publishes everything that is awesome in the Upper Perk Valley. Before we know it the end of the year will be upon us. Whether it seems like this year has flown by or you’re more than ready to have a fresh start in 2019, these chilly days are the perfect time to take a deep breath and enjoy a minute for yourself. Busy holiday parties and crowded shops can take a toll on us when we’re already feeling rushed, so remember to use these stress-relieving tips to put your health first and gear up for a great year to come. Keep Calm and Shine On 1. Be aware of your breathing. When you’re feeling stressed out, take a few moments to notice your breath. You can practice deep breathing anywhere. Standing in line at the mall, waiting at a red light, sitting down at your desk... anywhere! Deep breathing reduces stress and tension and brings awareness to your body instead of your racing thoughts. 2. Limit your alcohol consumption and make more healthy eating choices. Yes, this might seem impossible at the holidays, but eating a few more pieces of fruit and veggies than usual before the greasy goodness is a little way to give your body something it needs to function at its best. Cut some sugar and calories by trying new recipes with whole grains, vegetables, and fruit for your family table. Fresh recipes are a great way to get your creative juices flowing. You might even find a new holiday favorite along the way!

3. Stay hydrated. All the hustle and bustle of the holidays can take a bigger toll on our bodies than we realize. Your skin will love a surge of hydration and so will the rest of your bod. If you’re not a fan of plain water, try flavored seltzer with a few berries or a splash of juice for a flavorful non-alcoholic cocktail. 4. Start a gratitude journal. Right on the heels of Thanksgiving, gratefulness is fresh in our minds, so now is the best time to make a tradition of recording what you’re thankful for to remember in years to come. Grab a few sheets of paper or index cards in morning or before bed and jot down even one or two things you’re grateful for. Commit to doing this even a few days a week and see the difference it makes in a season too focused on what we don’t have. 5. Make time for you! Take a few minutes each day for quiet self-reflection. Hit the gym for a brief walk on the treadmill or take a steamy shower with relaxing music playing in the background. There’s no better investment you can make than an investment in yourself. A Joyful Community Tradition With December come so many wonderful traditions, some old, some new. This year sees the second annual lighting of the Upper Perk Community Christmas tree. After hearing from many Valley residents, a few local business owners took it upon themselves to start shopping around and talking with centralized locations within the Valley, then in the spring of 2017 proceeded to purchase and plant a new Community Christmas Tree at St. Marks Church. A community wide ornament decorating contest was held, with judging from grades K-5, and one lucky winner from each grade got to participate in the lighting of the tree on December 2nd. What a wonderful way to celebrate the season, with community coming together to kick off the holidays in style!

Come and enjoy the Annual Hometown Christmas Parade and Santa Land Sunday, December 2. The parade begins at 1:00 pm in Red Hill and proceeds down Main St. (Rte 29) through the boroughs of Red Hill, Pennsburg and East Greenville. You will see many beautiful horses, llamas, sled dogs, etc. Santa ends the parade and then hosts individual visits with children at Santa Land at St. Mark’s Church, 81 Main St., Pennsburg.
