HANK GROUNDHOG DAY

Extravaganz

The Harleysville Hank Groundhog Day extravaganza was the brainchild of Steve Diehl.

Having recently returned to his hometown in the Indian Valley to work as the Director of Advancement of The Mennonite Heritage Center, Diehl wanted to have some fun with the PA Dutch Groundhog tradition. He also wanted to provide exposure for the Heritage Center’s reconstructed barn as a rental venue.

The Heritage Center had little stomach for making a Groundhog Day an official event at that time. But Heritage Center Director Sarah Heffner borrowed “Goschenhoppen George” a very realistic stuffed hog and allowed Diehl to use the barn. Diehl then began taking the converted “George” around the community as Harleysville Hank, making stops for photo opps at businesses, schools, and nonprofits.

Hank’s popularity and penchant for popping up around the community found traction on his own Facebook page.

The first Extravaganza was held on Feb. 2, 2016. All the food was donated and given away for free. A staple is “loose scrapple”— the PA Dutch delicacy served straight from the kettle. Attendees come early and help stir the scrapple while enjoying the singing of Groundhog Carols by The Barnyard Singers. At 7 a.m. the members of H.O.G. emerged from an upper door in the barn to conduct the ceremony of word, song, and prognostication about the spring. Habtmon (President) Steve Diehl, Geldahaver (Treasurer) Steve Hunsberger, and Schreiver (Secretary) Randy Nyce each take part in the agenda. The ceremony climaxes with the appearance of Hank himself, who reveals whether he has seen his shadow or not.

The revelers then enjoy all the food—coffee, hot chocolate, funny cake, and shoo fly pie along with the scrapple, free of charge. After the success of the first event, it became a co-

sponsored affair of the Heritage Center, where Habtmon Diehl is now the Executive Director, and The Indian Valley Chamber of Commerce, where Geldhaver Hunsberger is the President.

About 150 revelers enjoyed the event the past two years; however many more enjoy Hank through his Facebook posts and community visits.

Each year takes on a different flavor. Following the 2017 Presidential inauguration, Hank became obsessed with crowd size and inflated his numbers. Since then, there has been an official crowd estimator. In 2018, two days before the Super Bowl, H.O.G. officers unfurled an Eagles banner and the crowd sang “Fly Eagles Fly” to conclude the ceremony.

People begin to gather from 6:30am; coffee is available from One Village Coffee and Hot Chocolate from Franconia Cafe; ceremony at 7 wraps up around 7:20; food follows the ceremony with scrapple meat provided

by Blooming Glen Pork and bread and condiments by Landis Markets.

Groundhog Day is always on February 2.

This is because it marks the halfway point in winter—six weeks from the Winter solstice, and six weeks to Spring equinox. The event has been held on weekdays the first three years; this year Feb. 2 falls on a Saturday.

1. Review presents and hostess gifts Of course your friends and family love you and were grateful for your hospitality, but no doubt you don’t really need all the tokens of affection you received. Surely someone else could make better use of that collection of tea, those pot holders or that picture frame? Hold on to what you love, by all means, but get rid of the rest by dropping it off at open link or The Community Thrift store.

2. Tapers, tea lights, scented...

Candles make the season and since you’ve probably gone through a whack of them, replace your stock now. They don’t have a shelf life so it’ll be one less thing to shop for next year.

3. Move the furniture You may be surprised what you find there. Take the cushions off sofas and chairs, vacuum along the wall behind the furniture and then turn your attention to the inside of the furniture itself. After the hosting you’ve done, no doubt it needs it.

4. Sort your CDs Are there songs or compilations you wish you’d had at your last get-together? Are there CDs you just never listen to anymore? Now’s the time to get rid of those and make a list of the titles you want to add to your collection. Look online –- some of your favorites may be on sale now.

5. Clean out the fridge All those half bottles of olives, maraschino cherries, and other garnishes that you use only for special occasions… Those opened containers of sauces, dips and marinades that don’t work with weekday meals… why hold on to them? The next time you need them, they will probably have passed their best-before date. Either plan menus around them or get rid of them and don’t feel guilty about it.

6. Inspect your seasonal decorations When you put them away, look for missing hooks or broken bits on balls and wreaths. You can probably fix them yourself, but if you can’t, get rid of them now and use this as an excuse to go shopping again. There will no doubt be serious bargains to be had.

7. Restock the liquor cabinet You may have used up a lot of your mix and stand-by offerings like vodka, rum or scotch. It’s always nice to have a few sweet after-dinner bottles as well, and they may also be close to empty now that the guests have gone.

8. Take care of your dinner party accessories Polish the silver and pack it away carefully. Check table linens for small holes before washing them and putting them away. Don’t bother putting them away if they need to be mended. It’s easier to take care of this stuff now, rather than adding it to your to-do list when you’re in the throes of getting ready for the next holiday.

9. Deal with your pictures Take that film in if you used a traditional camera or download the precious ones if you’ve gone digital. If you wait till after the next celebration, you’ll feel overwhelmed by them all. Sit down now and edit the great ones from the less-than-stellar and make a plan for them all. As you create a file, e-mail them to people who were in the shots, as a way of saying thank you for celebrating with us. (You’ll kill two birds, as they say; see number 10.) And if you’re going to hang on to all the shots yourself, pick up a few photo albums now.

10. Send thank-you cards Keeping on top of holiday notes can be tough when you’re in the middle of planning, celebrating and shopping. But now that things have slowed down, there’s more time to draft short missives of gratitude. Do it — you’ll feel good about it.

The Michael Ziegler farm The Michael Ziegler farm on Rt.73 near Skippack village is the location of a brick schoolhouse which still stands at the corner of Cressman Rd. The schoolhouse is known as “Ziegler’s School”. It is indicated on the map of 1848. Now a converted home with stucco over brick exterior. The original size and material appears intact, as well as the roof lines.

About the mid 1800’s, the State government began to organize an education system, and as residents grew in numbers, additional schoolhouses came into use. They were constructed in areas where there may have been more families with schoolage children. Families in an area might have decided to construct a

schoolhouse for their children, instead of having to travel miles to the nearest school. Some schoolhouses, if not all, were constructed on lands owned by farmers. Many schoolhouses reflect the name of the farmer. Skippack township had seven schoolhouses in use at the peak of the “schoolhouse period” that lasted into the 1920’s, approximately.

This schoolhouse was built on a farm purchased by settler Michael Ziegler, in 1727. The Ziegler family was important to the development and prosperity of Skippack on both the religious and business fronts. Michael, Sr., a minister, was highly respected in the Mennonite church and by the Lower Skippack Mennonite congregation. He was appointed a trustee by Van Bebber

for the 100 acres he transferred to the settlers of Skippack. His son Andrew was a Mennonite Bishop. His son Michael, Jr. started a tannery business as early as 1747 (operating close to 100 years) in the building on the opposite corner, across Cressman Rd. His grandson, John Ziegler, who built the house at Rt. 113 & 73, SW corner, was a well known musician and organ builder.

A long time resident recalls a teacher being Alice Smith. The writer remembers Ms. Smith as a music teacher. She was a kind person, also playing the organ on Sunday at the Trinity Church, which is her final resting place.

Fox, Katie T. Grater, Newton T. Grater, Kathryn F. Hallman, Sara F. Hallman, Frank N. Kratz, Martha N. Kratz, Lizzie Mae N. Kratz, Agnes R. Kreibel, Daisy E. Mench, Norman G. Metz, Lizzie J. Reinford, Elizabeth W. Tyson, Emma W. Tyson, Ruth W. Warren, Mabel A. Whitman, Mildred A. Whitman A booklet dated April 10, 1916 was a gift to the graduating class from their teacher. The hand written inscription, inside the front cover, reads “Miss Mabel A. Witman, presented by my teacher Melvin T. Tyson, Zigler’s school, Penna.” The front reads “Best Wishes, With pleasant memories of happy days spent together in the schoolroom, this souvenir is presented to you with the best wishes of your teacher.”

HISTORY OF PLAYCRAFTERS Playcrafters was born in 1949 and was based in Lansdale. In 1956, Dage Nilsson bought some land adjacent to his property in Skippack, the site of an old barn. His son-in-law, John Bitterman Barricks, was a member of Playcrafters and suggested that the barn could be spruced up and made into a theater. One year later, after a full year of blood and sweat, the Playcrafters organization finished the barn in time for the first show in the space - Harvey - in the summer of 1957.

Over the years, the organization has been an integral part of the Skippack community.

The Barn itself has been remodeled numerous times, with the biggest recent remodel being completed in the early 2000s, adding a full addition to the building which now houses all of the dressing rooms for the actors and actresses.
