Ace hardware in Harleysville is more then just a hardware store. Harleysville Ace is independently owned and operated since 1974. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s father started the business as a small town hardware store and it has grown into a business that has many unique niches. Don Hoff Jr started in the business at the age of 13 and bought the business in 2006. One of the constants at Harleysville Ace is adding products or changing to meet the needs of their customers. To help meet the needs of their growing nursery and outdoor area they added a beautiful new fenced in seasonal plant area as well as a four seasons patio room. The four seasons room will have inspiring product displays for each season of the year. Some of these products will include an expanded

selection of succulents and terrariums as well as wind chimes etc. The four seasons room is also the new location for their newly designed bird center. They have also expanded their large outdoor living selection to include new outdoor games for the entire family as well as all the accessories needed for your back yard entertainment. This new nursery area and four seasons room will provide a great shopping experience with colorful plants and unique new products for all four seasons of the year. Celebrations of mothers and motherhood can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans. These ancient cultures held festivals honoring the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele. In the United Kingdom and other parts of Europe, an early Christian celebration known as “Mothering Day” occurred. The celebration fell on the fourth Sunday in Lent. The faithful would return to their “mother church” for spiritual contemplation. It shifted over time to become a more secular holiday. It eventually merged with the American Mother’s Day in the 1930’s. Mother’s Day is commonly known as a time for celebratory meals, gifts, cards and outpourings of love and appreciation for mothers. Born of war, Mother’s Day has a surprisingly dark past. The somber roots of the holiday began in the 19th century with mourning women remembering and honoring fallen soldiers. It was also a time to observe and promote peace. When the holiday later became commercialized, Anna Jarvis, the woman who championed the holiday’s inception, devoted her life to reclaiming the holiday. It all began in the 1850’s West Virginia, when a women’s organizer, Ann Reeves Jarvis- Anna’s mother-organized Mother’s Day workshop

clubs to teach sanitation methods in hopes of promoting infant health and mortality. In postwar years, Jarvis and other woman organized Women’s Friendship Day Picnics and other events to rally women to take active political roles in promoting peace and pacifism. Her daughter Anna, is responsible for what we now call Mother’s Day. After the death of her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis in 1905, Anna organized the first Mother’s Day observance in 1908. For Jarvis, it was a time for daughters and sons to honor their own mothers. Mostly though Anna’s efforts, it became celebrated in growing numbers across the U.S. President Woodrow Wilson, officially set aside the second Sunday in May as the national holiday. Anna’s idea of an intimate Mother’s Day quickly became a commercial goldmine that focused on the selling and buying of gifts. This deeply disturbed Anna. She fiercely fought against what the holiday had become. Her attempts continued well into the 1940’s. In 1948, she died at the age of 84 in Philadelphia’s Marshall Square Sanatorium. -Jennifer Frieze

Tannery of Michael Ziegler, Jr. Researched and written by Mike Dickey Member of Skippack Historical Society The Ziegler land extended along the southern side of Skippack Pike from Rt. 113 to Cressman Rd. In 1727, Michael Ziegler, Sr. purchased a 100 acre farm from Andrew and Barbara Schrager, along the opposite side of Skippack Pike from Rt.113 to Cressman Rd. The Schrager’s bought the land from Van Bebber in 1709. At this Cressman Road intersection, northeast corner, you can see the old schoolhouse that was operating in the 1800’s, as part of a network on schoolhouses in the township. It was named “Ziegler’s School”. (Read more in the “Schoolhouse” section.) The northwest corner of Skippack Pike and Cressman Rd. was also owned by Michael Ziegler through the purchase of the Schrager farm. On this corner, the narrow 2-story house of stucco over stone may have been built in the early 1700’s. This small structure housed a successful tannery business that Michael Ziegler, Jr. started in 1747. It was a tannery and curried shop. In 1896, author Heckler wrote, here was “the tannery and the buildings-

bark sheds, bark-mill, vats, and hide vats, belonging to it.” He indicates that the shop was a tenant house that was converted and added onto, “being made ready for use as a tannery.” It appears to have been quite a prosperous business. A great-granddaughter of Michael Ziegler, Jr., Mrs. William F. Hallman, allowed Heckler to review ledger books of the tannery, written in German and started in 1747 until 1840 when it may have been closed. (a Mr. and Mrs. Hallman had the Victorian built at Store Rd. and Skippack Pike, in 1873) The tannery may have been the first in the community. The finished product was used for apparel or furnishings. Undoubtedly, the tannery provided a welcomed service to early residents. Presently, 2002, there is a local resident who has told us of her memories living in this house during the 1940’s, and of a small stone outbuilding. Her father used to describe the full, stone wall fireplace that existed on the first floor. (“History of Skippack”, James Heckler, 1896)
