Ahhh yes – Who has the most incredible breakfasts, delicious lunches, homemade soups, friendly atmosphere, and the best bacon in The Valley and beyond? – In fact, if you ask anyone where to get the best breakfast, chances are they will tell you, hands down, Powderbourne.

Best known for their incredible thick slab bacon, Powderbourne is much more than just this breakfast staple. The sausage is thick, smoked just perfect and fried up perfectly juicy. The homemade soups, decadent desserts and thick milkshakes are sure to please even the pickiest palettes.

Brewing Up Excitement

Tucked away in Pennsburg, a uniquely inspired coffee roaster and well established company, specializing in spices, herbs and other goodies, makes its home.

The relationship of the two companies is based on family and friendship. The owner of Spices & Such, Lorraine Brinkman, has known Nelson and his family for many years. When Zern’s closed, it was a natural transition, for both businesses to work together. Spices & Such moved next store to SpeakEasy Coffee Company. They are located in the back of the Perkiomen Tours building. An interesting historic note, is that when importing began, specialty coffee included the trade of exotic spices and herbs.

Nelson of SpeakEasy coffee company, has always been a free spirited creative thinker. He grew up with coffee as a focal point of family gatherings. It intrigued him that people loved coffee and how a cup of this complex dark elixir would change a person’s mood instantly.

Nelson told this writer, “Its magical because people wake up first thing to partake.” One of his cherished coffee memories involves his grandfather. His grandfather served as pastor at a church in Lansdale.

Nelson would go early in the morning with his grandfather to church.

Coffee would be made and a day of service and prayer would begin.

As a teenager, Nelson dreamed of owning his own coffee shop. He made sketches and plans of an inclusive and artistic gathering place centered around incredible coffee.

As an adult, Nelson moved to Ohio and worked various jobs. He met his wife and eventually the pair made their way back to Pennsylvania after a marriage ceremony in Ohio. A fellow band member of his worked as a master coffee roaster. Nelson got a job as an apprentice roaster. It was his first real job in the industry and he loved it. With the support of family, he has slowly but steadily brought his dream to fruition. Nelson shared, “My motto has been to take my time and not rush into things. It’s a healthy cautiousness”.

Spices & Such is known by many throughout the Perkiomen Valley.

I personally have great memories of Zerns on a Friday or Saturday night. It was the place for country folk to visit on the weekend. As a teenager, Spices & Such was one of my stops for spices, herbs and delicious teas. The shop has moved, but it’s the same great place. They have an incredible selection of spices, cooking salts, medicinal herbs, teas and flavored coffee. You can easily purchase small amounts to try and the staff is friendly and helpful. They even carry sacred sage to burn!
