ccm Celebrating Fifteen Wonderful Years!

To say that it has been a whirlwind of emotions is probably the biggest understatement of the century. If you would have told me back in 2006 that the little magazine that I started with a friend would grow into the Upper Perkiomen Valley’s most talked about, most used, most trusted and welcomed piece of local advertising I would never have believed it. It has been a personal journey, one that gave me the opportunity to watch my daughter grow from an 8 year old child into an amazing young woman, while being the Mom I wanted to be, by her side and attending ALL of her functions. Being an entrepreneur is tough. The worry, the stress, the wondering what tomorrow will bring.

But I wouldn’t change a thing. This little magazine of mine has survived a recession, and a pandemic, all while overcoming the print advertising objections. Print will never die. Holding a magazine in your hands, flipping the pages, using a real pen to fill out a puzzle, cutting a coupon, these are all visceral experiences that the soul yearns for.

The past 15 years have introduced me to experiences that I will never forget, and emotions that I hadn’t counted on. But the biggest perks are the friends I made along the way. I am so blessed, and so very humbled, to have met people that have stood by my side and had my back from day one. I can not begin to thank everyone that has made the past 15 years possible, because we simply do not have enough room here. I have attempted to list the people that have made an impact in my life in the pages of this months issue. I tried to remember everyone, but if you don’t see your name, know it is only because my brain is overwhelmed as I write this. Each and every one of you has made this journey not only possible, but so very enjoyable. So thank you dear friends for all the support you have shown me, and the kindnesses you have bestowed upon me.

And then there are the two people that have stood by my side through thick and thin, when I didn’t think I could go on. They have endured all the stress, all the sleepless nights, all the rants and raves, and the many many “press week crazies”. I, of course, am speaking about my daughter, Nicole, and my husband, Warren. I spent the best years of this journey with my daughter by my side, introducing her to my crazy world, and making some amazing memories. (Who can forget Carchuterie!) And my husband, Warren, who would do simply anything I asked to make this journey easier.

From helping with day to day operations, to finding all of the “lost checks” in the seats of my car, I will never be able to fully express my gratitude to have the best family by my side than anyone could ask for.

This truly is a family business, even if they aren’t officially on the payroll, I sometimes think they should be!

So thank you both, from the bottom of my press crazy heart!

In closing, I have only one thing left to say...I look forward to the next 15 years of bringing you the best local advertising around!

TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT

My Journey

Growing up, I remember thinking, I am invincible. I played softball, I was in marching band, I played tennis and racquetball, and I rode horses. Knee pain? Nope. Not me, I am a warrior. And then one day, bam. What the hell was that knee pain out of nowhere? Walked it off. A few days later. Bam. Same pain. Did I twist my knee? Did I sleep wrong? Suck it up! I am a WARRIOR damn it! It wasn’t long after the third or fourth or fifth time that I saw my dr. I was sooo young. Early twenties, maybe.

And the diagnosis came back. I had osteoarthritis, (OA). My cartilage was significantly worn down. In both knees.

I remember thinking, that’s wrong. I only have pain in one.

After that diagnosis, my life changed.

And I cannot say it has been an easy ride.

For the years that followed, I managed my pain with meds and injections and physical therapy. Eventually, I became less active. The pain was too much to bear some days. But knee replacements were out of the question. I was much to young. So, anti inflammatories became my friend. And as the years progressed, the less active I became, the more weight I gained. By my forties I knew I couldn’t bear much more. So, I made the decision to find a surgeon that I trusted to replace my knees.

I took lightly. But alas, when I started to look for that surgeon that I trusted with my life, I was met with the dreaded, “You need to lose weight, and you are still young for knee replacements”. OH NO! Fast forward 17 years. I am now 57 years old, and the past 17 years are almost a blur. The emotional and physical toll that this journey has taken me on has been nothing short of Pulitzer Prize winning. That is, if my ADHD would allow me to write it down. Barring my NY times bestselling book, I had to settle for this short story.

The past few years have not been kind to my knees. The OA progressed to bone on bone in both knees, which was not shocking to me. But I still needed to lose a significant amount of weight before knee replacement.

And anyone that knows how hard it is to lose weight when you can exercise, will know how nearly impossible that sounded with knees that made it impossible to walk without a cane on most days. At some point, I ended up needing a wheelchair, unable to walk even the smallest distance. Shortly after, I had weight loss surgery to help get the weight off to be eligible for knee replacement.

One thing you should know about me, I am a baby. Surgeries, needles, no way!

So, the decision to do this was not one Celebrating Community

As the years progressed and the weight came off, the pain was so unbearable that most days it was an effort to get out of bed. My Dr. recommended Physical Therapy, and gave me a list of the therapists they used. I tried a few, and was not happy having to work on my own, while the PT tended to other patients. I felt that I wasn’t getting better, and asked my Dr. if I could switch. Who knew I could pick my own therapist, and didn’t have to go off their recommendations!!? It was then that I found Dr. Jenna Klenieski, at Advanced Motion Rehabilitation in Red Hill.

Dr. Jenna works with patients one-on-one, which means that I am the only patient she has in her facility for the entire hour. Not only does she watch every step I make, but a large part of the hour is spent hands on, working the muscles, assisted stretching, and torture, er, I mean, massaging the sore muscles. It was like a dream. Slowly, with her guidance, I started to be able to walk. Without a cane! Mind you, I knew the day of my knee replacement

was coming, but I wanted to make sure I was in the best possible condition BEFORE the replacement, so that I could have the best possible outcome after. And I finally found that with Dr. Jenna.

So here we are, and I am scheduled for my Total Knee replacement on June 29th.

I have jumped through all the hoops, and I am on my way! I have found an AMAZING surgeon, out of St. Lukes, (more on him in next month’s continuation of this article) and I continue to see Dr. Jenna on a regular basis to help with my pre-surgery strengthening and stretching. It has been an incredibly tough journey to get to this point, but it has made me who I am today, and with the team I have assembled to help with my surgery and recovery, I know I am in good hands.

P O H S E K I B E V I EXCLUS It was a simple problem without a simple solution. How do we train students to work when businesses do not hire them?

Scott Roth, then director of the Upper Perk Community Life Center (UPCLC), mentored seniors from Upper Perkiomen High School in Pennsburg. Roth would teach them how to swing a hammer, update a website, make phone calls, and order supplies from a vendor. Roth learned these “simple skills” while working in his family’s business early on. But most students wouldn’t have these experiences on their own.

Meanwhile, a $22 million YMCA was opening in the Upper Perkiomen school district. Roth began working as a consultant for the YMCA helping shape their youth programs while still working with UPCLC. Roth began to promote the idea of an “earn-A-bike program”: teach kids to work and they can earn a bike, fixed with their own hands. Roth just needed a bike mechanic, so he prayed and kept asking.

An acquaintance of Roth’s, Dick Fox, felt called to be that mechanic and the program began.

After a couple months in the garage of the UPCLC, with 15 kids in the program and more bicycles coming in for repairs, the demand for parts was exceeding the donated bicycles in need of repair.

JBI, the largest bicycle parts distributor in the US, partnered with the program. However, the program needed to be in a traditional brick and mortar shop. Soon a banner was hung on the garage with the name, “Bike & Sol.” Paul Chesloski works on an E-bike conversion

Eventually, UPCLC programs diminished as YMCA programming increased. Bike & Sol became a student work program through the YMCA. Weekly, ten students came to the shop to volunteer. When UPCLC closed, the entire building was now Bike & Sol. Bike & Sol has serviced over 1500 bikes and touched many more lives. New at Bike & Sol this year, bring your current bike in and convert it to an E-Bike! Bike & Sol can take any bike and make this conversion. No need to buy an expensive new E-bike, your current bike will be perfect! And custom conversions are no problem. Bike & Sol works on all bikes, no matter where they came from.

With the COVID pandemic, bicycling has become more popular than ever. This has forced Bike & Sol to become more than a student work program. Now it is a bicycle shop that happens to have a student program. More than ten adults regularly volunteer at the shop.

Bike & Sol is now an intergenerational space for young and old to meet and share their love of life. Helping people ride bicycles is one of the best things we can do for mental health and relationship building.

Today Bike & Sol is a community non-profit bicycle shop that covers all biking needs, from a trash-picked bicycle to a high-end race bike.

The volunteers, young and old, are continuing to improve their skills to keep people riding in all kinds of bikes.
