Snap Fitness & Upper Perk Yoga

Perfect Together

BY: Noelle Kingsbauer

If you’ve never taken a Power Vinyasa yoga class you’re not alone; up until a few weeks ago I hadn’t either! A little intimidated and a lot interested I was invited to one of the several yoga classes taught by Jacque Porterfield at Snap Fitness in Pennsburg. The experience is unlike any workout class I’d taken before, not just in the specialized attention I was given as a student, but in the way I felt during the class. “Yoga is a lesson in how to be alive in your body and how it moves,” explained Porterfield. “What muscle does what and how to observe without that critical voice telling you you’re not good enough.” Jacque Porterfield, who is also the studio owner of Lehigh Valley Yoga, has been practicing Ashtanga yoga (classes using poses in the same order each time) and Vinyasa yoga (different fluid movements each time) since 1999 and has been teaching it since 2002. Porterfield made me feel that I was in good hands right away. “I have lots of experience teaching beginners and really advanced students all in one room,” she explained. “There are going to be really experienced people and people who’ve never done it before who can’t touch their toes.” I wasn’t sure what to expect in the Power Vinyasa class, which is held at 6:30pm every Wednesday. “You can expect to feel like you don’t know what you’re doing, that you might be uncomfortable a little bit, but you’re also safe and that’s ok to feel that way,” Porterfield said.

“You’ll feel challenged physically and mentally by the poses. Mostly, you’ll have fun. The attitudes of my classes are upbeat, friendly and fun. No pressure.” That’s definitely the kind of class I’m interested in. My fear has always been the only person in class making a mistake and getting singled out! During the class on either side of me were two friendly and experienced ladies who Porterfield knew by name and spoke glowingly about. Heidilyn Hoffmeister stated she has been doing yoga with Porterfield for about three years. “I like the way I feel afterwards. I have a lot of physical damage and injury and this helps keep me on track. This helps me work on my different affected areas.” Katie Flaherty, who has been doing yoga for about eight years, explained that she is hyper-flexible. This means she is usually able to stretch into most any move, but has to be careful not to overextend herself in the process. Yoga has helped her learn to how grow in her strength and to not tear small muscles when she goes into her movements. “It’s a big stress reducer,” she added. The movements given in class varied from pretty simple to rather challenging, but in every movement Porterfield was right there to make sure I was doing the move correctly. She would also show modified versions of poses I could follow if one was just out of my reach. I didn’t feel singled out or pressured, just encouraged to do what I could and at the end felt proud of what I accomplished.

a

Having taken more beginner-level yoga classes previously, the challenge of a “Power” class was fun to try, but I would also like to improve on some of my basic moves. Luckily, Snap has that covered too. In addition to this Wednesday evening class they also offer “Yoga for Beginners” on Saturday mornings at 7:30am and “Gentle Flow Yoga” on Sundays at 4:30pm. In any class beginners are welcome and can move at their own pace. No matter what your fitness level, shape, size, or age, yoga is something you can do. In honor of Valentine’s Day what better way is there to show love than to take care of yourself and try something new? Bring a friend or two and have a fun time tree posing, downward facing dog-ing and if you’re lucky you can find someone who can demonstrate what a “bird of paradise” is because it just sounds like a fun pose to check out. Find out more about the yoga classes at Snap Fitness and all of their other amenities by stopping by 476 Pottstown Ave. in Pennsburg or giving them a call at 267-923-5891. Don’t forget to “Like” their Facebook page too!

#LIVINLAVIDALOCAVORE Detox with these 5 Foods

It’s the new year. You’ve already had time to decide on your resolutions for 2018. Maybe one of them is to eat healthy, maybe one of them is to lose weight, or maybe you actually want to eat more. No matter what your resolution may be, it is always good to kick-start your metabolism with a little detox. This is not a juice cleanse, this not a fast nor a diet but rather, some suggestions to help you be the healthiest you yet. Adding these 5 foods to your diet can help you detox and reset:

Cabbage: “Cabbage does double detox duty. Its diuretic properties help rid your body of excess liquid, carrying toxins along with it. Like other cruciferous veggies, cabbage is also sulfur-rich, helping your liver break down toxins so they can be more easily expelled.” HuffingtonPost.com

Salmon: “Cold-water fish like salmon, mackerel and sardines contain good fats that reduce inflammation and boost immune functioning.” - GreenEatz.com

Onions: “Onions are rich in sulfur-containing compounds that are responsible for their strong odor. Sulfur is a powerful detox element and helps the body to release toxins, especially for the liver. Foods naturally high in sulfur also help the body to detox from heavy metals like lead, arsenic and cadmium.” HealthyBliss.com

Eggs: “Fruit and vegetables do not provide the body with muchneeded protein. During a detox diet, protein can be added to the diet through eggs and beans. Each organic free-range egg, when hard-boiled adds 7g of high quality protein”. Livestrong.com Kombucha: “Kombucha is high in Glucaric acid, which is beneficial to the liver and aids its natural detoxification. As Kombucha also supports healthy gut bacteria and digestion, it helps the body assimilate food more easily and provides quick and easy energy without caffeine.” - WellnessMama.com Just adding these food to your regular (already healthy diet) can help cleanse your body and make you feel good. The best part is that most of these foods you can cook all different ways so you’ll never get bored! Learn more: Locavoreatyourdoor.com/detox

EXPERIENCE WHAT “NORMAL” FEELS LIKE

WITH HALL FAMILY CHIROPRACTIC! BY: Noelle Kingsbauer

As an experienced doctor and chiropractor, Dr. Craig Hall has catered to his clients at Hall Family Chiropractic for over 15 years. The name, he says, sometimes leads people to believe that his family working with him is the reason for it, when in fact family is the mission statement of the office. “We’re all about families,” says Dr. Hall.“I saw somebody who is 92 years old yesterday and before that someone who is 4-weeks old. It’s about taking care of your family for the life of your family.” Some of the most common ailments people go to a chiropractor for are neck and lower back pain as well as headaches. Chiropractic work can also occasionally aid in alleviating allergies and sciatica. Sometimes it’s not accidents that cause the pain you’re now feeling, explains Dr. Hall, but a slow build-up of years of wear and tear and not being properly adjusted. “It’s not a one-sizefits-all. I don’t just do chiropractic, I do a little bit of stretching and I give exercises where needed.” Kinesiotaping is another service the practice provides for sports-related injuries, which can help the body heal itself and support injured areas without restriction.

His clients’ valuable time is at the forefront of Dr. Hall’s mind. Appointments are available for both evening and weekend hours and walk-ins are welcome too, so you’ll never feel like you’ll have to wait to get the pain relief you need. Busy moms and dads can also feel welcome to bring their children into the office while they are being treated. “I love it when people realize how they could have felt all along,” says Dr. Hall.“Too many people thinking living with these aches and pains in normal and then they think ‘Oh, this is what normal feels like? I never thought I could feel this good.’” Dr. Hall not only serves the public in his practice, but also keeps involved in the Upper Perk community as the leader of the volunteer trail crew at Green Lane Park. His practice also helps runners at area 5Ks by stretching them before and after.“I love this area, it’s great. It’s a small-town community where everyone knows everyone.” An ounce of prevention is truly worth a pound of cure especially when it comes to your health. Dr. Hall is in-network with many insurance plans including Aetna and Blue Cross to serve every member of his community the best he can.“That’s really my thing. I like keeping people healthy.

ItÊs great getting people better, but I like keeping them healthy.‰

It’s great getting people better, but I like keeping them healthy.”During this season of new workout routines and enhanced physical activity there is no better time to get your body properly aligned and in tip-top shape.Located in the back of the building at 570 Main Street in Pennsburg (267-923-5333) and in the shopping center at 440 Town Center in New Britain (215-340-5376), Dr. Hall and is his staff are the friendly faces and skilled hands you need to help your body become aligned, comfortable and ready for whatever the new year brings to you. “Most people are probably already thinking about [going to a chiropractor]. They feel their aches and pains, but they need to stop thinking about it. They need to come. No one has a deficiency in ibuprofen!” jokes Dr. Hall.

The Practical Vet

By Dr. Kristy L. Walter, DVM, cVMA

The litter box (LB) causes cat owners more problems. There’s many reasons cats stop using a litter box: hygiene, illness, fear, size, anxiety, pain, and accessibility. Anytime your cat’s elimination habits change, a phone call or visit to your vet is advised. Listed below are some common issues and possible solutions. • Generally, if a cat is defecating outside of the LB it’s because there’s a problem with the box. Urinating outside of the LB tends to be a multifactorial issue for most cats. • Temporarily placing a LB in the location your cat is inappropriately eliminating provides an opportunity to figure out what the problem is and how to approach it without the frustration of cleaning up a daily mess. • Litter boxes should be located in a quiet, low traffic area, which can be easily accessed by your cat(s). Loud noises such as a washing machine on spin cycle or slamming cabinets, abrupt interruptions or lights turning on and off, or people and pets passing nearby can make your kitty insecure in the very vulnerable position of posturing to eliminate. • Remove LB covers. Most cats prefer an open box; covers concentrate odors and fumes (think ammonia), decrease space to move around, darken the area, and only allow a single entry or exit. • Ensure the LB is big enough. Extra “fluffy” cats may not fit or feel comfortable in the typically sized LB. Think outside the (litter) box and utilize under-bed storage containers or modify a large container by an entrance and exit at heights appropriate for your cat. • Geriatric cats may have trouble climbing in and out of a LB because of arthritis or other medical issue. Find a suitable replacement or accommodate your pet with creative thinking: make a step up or a padded landing, maybe a ramp works better… • Litter boxes should be located in different areas. This is especially important in multicat households where one cat could potentially block access to this valuable resource if they are all located in the same place. • The general formula for LBs to cats is: 1+(number of cats in household) per floor. Yes this mean if you have 3 cats, you should have 4 LBs per floor. • Pheromones such as Feliway, as a spray or plug-in diffuser, can reduce anxiety and make the area feel more familiar. This increases the likelihood a cat will accept using a LB. • Many cats have preferences for the type of litter you use and even the depth of it. Trial and error is usually the easiest means of determining what your kitty prefers. • Scrub the box weekly using hot water but DO NOT use scented cleansers. To encourage cats to continue using the LB it should retain some of their own scent and not an overpowering cleanser scent. • Scoop the box at least once daily. • Cleaning up cat pee can be exasperating! My go-to products are Urine-Away (by Ceva) and Simple Green (appropriately diluted). Remember, a medical issue may be behind your cat’s inappropriate eliminations. If these helpful hints aren’t solving your cat’s LB issues a vet visit is warranted early on, before you and your cat are at wit’s end.

Lovely Valentine

And just like that…it’s February.

By Lisa Palmer

We do so much planning for the holidays and New Year that we blink and its Valentine’s Day. One thing I’ve noticed is that it’s so hard to find good decorations for this holiday. Halloween and Christmas are everywhere but Valentines, or even St. Patty’s Day, are so hard to find. Our suggestion? Make your own. Some of the best decorations are handmade.

Marigold has many decorating tips on our blog this month, but we wanted to highlight one simple and fast décor idea. To complete you will need: sticks, scissors, pink or red construction paper, a vase and a hot glue gun.

Have the kids go outside and find the best sticks they can find. Gather them and bring them inside. Snap off each to determine the size you want. Lay them out on a table. Then using your construction paper and scissors, cut 2-3 inch size hearts. Hot glue 2-3 tiny hearts on each stick. When finished, arrange the sticks in a white vase and display either on a console table or fireplace mantel. Voila! You have a Valentine’s Day decoration!

You can find all templates, pictures and additional ideas on Marigold’s blog: marigoldstaging.com

Stay Warm & Toasty with new Garage Doors from BY: Noelle Kingsbauer

A chill in the air and gusts of snowy wind shouldn’t make you worry if you’ve had the right kind of doors installed on your home or business. The right kinds of doors, explains Jen McCarty of Valley Lock & Door, will keep your energy bills low and your comfort level on high all year long. The fully insured, state licensed and bonded home improvement contractor, which she owns along with her husband Bob, has been serving the Upper Perkiomen Valley since 2011. “Our insulated doors add energy efficiency,” says McCarty. “You will notice a difference in your garage and the rest of your home. Most notice a difference in their heating and cooling bill over time.” Valley Lock & Door provides free estimates on any door installation so that you can rest assured you will have experts working on every level of your home project from start to finish. “I don’t recommend changing any springs by yourself,” advises McCarty. She continued to tell stories she and her husband have been informed of where people trying to do work on those tensionrigged system have been injured and even lost fingers from making one wrong move.

“We have a lot of ‘do-it-yourselfers’ out there and a lot of the system is under tension and if you try to loosen or tighten the tension wrong you will hurt yourself.” Don’t risk injuring yourself or spending more money to have work redone later; the team at Valley Lock & Door and their employees are well experienced with garage doors and openers, entry and storm doors along with various locksmith services. What might take a homeowner several hours to complete can take Valley only an hour saving time, money and aggravation for anyone on a budget with a tight schedule. Now that the holidays are over and spring is around the corner it’s a better time than ever to think about making your home as comfortable and cost effective as possible. “Regardless of if it’s a storm door, entry door or garage door it can help with energy bills,” explains McCarty of the difference proper insulation makes. “If you're noticing any gaps, light or drafts around your door, it is time to consider having it serviced or even replaced if it is more than 10 years old. There are a lot more energy efficient options available today.”

Even for new homeowners a visit from Valley Lock & Door can be beneficial by stopping a potential trouble spot before it even starts. “If you’re in a new construction home most times they only put in the contractor grade doors. You should consider upgrading because in most cases they’re not insulated” advises McCarty. Valley Lock & Door is located at 334 Washington Street in East Greenville. Keep an eye out for their special springtime promotions and sales coming up in future issues of The Community Connection. Also visit valleylockanddoor.com for more information on services, a gallery of their projects, and to request a free estimate.

Chocolate is in the air?

by Noelle Kingsbauer

Love is in the air in Upper Perk! How else do you describe an area that often has the scent of chocolate wafting through it other than lovely? Looking through the pages of “The Community Connection,” you’ve seen there are quite a few activities and places to go this month to beat the winter blues, but what about for Valentine’s Day?Here are a few suggestions to make a unique, fun, local February 14th that are a little different from the traditional roses and champagne... For a family outing with your young children, take a little drive to a “Nature Valentines”at Norristown Farm Park (West Germantown Pike and Barley Sheaf Drive, 2500 Upper Farm Road, Norristown, PA 19403). The list of activities for this fun afternoon event include turning paper hearts into animals and making special valentines for your friends and family. They will supply a few things from nature that you can use to enhance your creations. This event starts at 1pm where your family will learn about love in the animal kingdom between parents and their young. This event is for ages 3 and up with an adult for a fee of $5 per child. Pre-registration is required, so call 610-270-0215 for further information. If it’s just you and your honey take a break from the packed restaurants and cook a dinner at home. Check out all the great deals from the butchers in this months issue and pick up a few steaks for the grill! Whether you want to surprise your sweetheart with a full meal or each pick a recipe for one of the courses to work on together, the time you spend together is the ultimate way to each other’s hearts. It’s no surprise a few foods such as oysters, avocados, honey, and chili peppers are reported to boost the feel-good hormone of serotonin (aka aphrodisiac foods), so start your Pinterest searches now. Don’t forget the dark chocolate for dessert!

If a traditional cupid-ified Valentine’s Day isn’t up your alley, then consider showing love by volunteering your time or donating items that will bring a smile to others. Both are worth more than you can imagine to those that’ll benefit and there are several places nearby that would gladly accept your generosity. The next time you’re at the post office remember The Open Link has a wish list on their website requesting several items including postage stamps. This small gift will make a big impact for their organization. Upper Perkiomen Community Thrift Shop accepts donations of new and gently used clothes and household items that will benefit many families in your community. Help warm a furry heart by donating to Logan’s Heroes Animal Rescue. Cat and dog beds, pet food, paper towels, and more make their wish list. How are you planning to celebrate this Valentine’s Day? Is there a hidden gem that we missed? Let us know by “Liking” the Love Upper Perk Facebook page and keep up with us for more fun news in the Upper Perkiomen Valley!

Answer to January Puzzle

Always

FOREVER & Love, hearts, flowers, and chocolate are some of the first things that come to mind when one thinks of Valentine’s Day. The celebration of candy and cupids wasn’t begun by either Hallmark or St. Valentine however, although both made contributions to how most Americans celebrate today. The exact origin of February 14th is cloudy, but what researchers do know about this holiday for honeys might surprise you.

Ancient Rome is the first record we have for a Valentine’s Day-type celebration, except it was much more dark than gory than how most in today’s times would like to celebrate. From Feb. 13 to 15, the Romans celebrated the pagan feast of Lupercalia. Young women would actually line up for the men to hit them with the hides of sacrificed animals. They believed this would make them fertile. The bizarre also included a matchmaking lottery, in which young men drew the names of women from a jar. The couple would then be “coupled up” for the duration of the festival or longer if they hit it off.

The legend of the romantic known as “St. Valentine” came later. This story is also traced back to the ancient Romans. Emperor Claudius II executed two men, both named Valentine, on Feb. 14 of different years in the 3rd century A.D. Their martyrdom was honored by the Catholic Church with the celebration of St. Valentine's Day.Later, Pope Gelasius I combined St. Valentine's Day with Lupercalia to oust the pagan rituals.

In later times the holiday grew sweeter. Chaucer and Shakespeare romanticized it in their work. Handmade paper cards became popular in the Middle Ages as what friends and lovers gave each other as tokens of affection. The industrial revolution led to factory-made cards in the 19th century. In 1913 Hallmark Cards began mass producing valentines. The rest of course, is history.
