Find Some “Me” Time (And Space) this Year

De-stressing after the holidays can be a real chore! It takes time and energy to get away and recoup from the hubbub of the Fast paced, modern society that we live in. Many people neglect themselves, and end up suffering the consequences with stress related health problems. To make 2018 the best year ever, to slow down and figure out how to best charge your unique set of batteries.

Many of us believe that we can only relax in a beautiful idyllic health spa, or on a beach in an exotic locale. Requiring the perfect circumstances to relax will only put you further into a stress mess. Figure out small ways you can nurture yourself, like my favorite: making a hot cup of tea or any hot beverage. Others may enjoy reading one chapter of an interesting book, meditating for 5 minutes in the woods, or even just taking a walk around the block. Find something nourishing that you can do consistently.

If you are a spa addict, figure out how to maximize your experience so that it doesn’t break the bank (causing even more stress). It could be a great haircut, manicure, or even a massage. A little luxury can go a long way, and with local providers you can often score coupons or find online promotions to lower the cost. Think of yourself as a category in your budget, that way you will not feel guilty for spending a small amount of money on yourself each month.

Are you someone who has to get out of their environment to relax? Well, you live in the right state! Pennsylvania offers many beautiful natural sites to discover. High rocks, ringing rocks, and Hawk Mountain are all very close and offer a variety of flora and fauna. Always read the posted signs and make sure you are prepared if you’re on a de-stressing mission. If you plan to take devices along with you, make sure they are on airplane mode or off completely. Time away from modern technology can be like medicine for the soul.

Think about one activity from this article that you can use starting today. It takes time to form a solid habit but the right habits can transform a person’s entire life. Self care doesn’t have to be a bunch of woo woo. Each person can do something they actually enjoy to reduce daily stress. If you are not the reading type, it is best not to force yourself to be cooped up with a book. We all have stressors in our own way, how will YOU try to manage stress in 2018? Take action by writing down your goal and telling someone. You may be surprised at the positive effect you have on those around you!

Make Your Resolutions ality with Snap Fitness

Re

BY: Noelle Kingsbauer

Make 2018 the year of taking control of your potential by pushing your body toward better health and wellness. At Snap Fitness in Pennsburg this goal is clear as they continually work towards new, cutting-edge ways to benefit their members by encouraging, motivating and driving them to success. The latest technology is incorporated into their facility to give members options other area gyms can’t offer. The MYZONE fitness band is one of the latest advances in fitness equipment that Snap Fitness has integrated into their facility to benefit its members. “It gives you an opportunity to actually track your progress and your output. I love the fact that it does the percentages of your output. It shows you actually what you’re doing,” says training manager/general manager Jamal Lewis of the slim, flexible fitness band that fits around the user’s chest. “It’s not a good tool, it’s a great tool,” says Lewis. The MYZONE, which connects to the television in the main workout area of Snap as well as an app on iPhone or Android, shows users a color-coded system to track their fitness activity and vitals. These statistics show up as grey (low output, barely moving) blue, green, and yellow (good output for fat burning), and red (intense output, muscle burning).

MYZONE keeps the user motivated to keep going as well as being aware of where their workout is taking them. This easy to understand tracking system also helps fitness instructors know where each of the members is in their individual workout to better assist them. “Other fitness trackers use technology set from what the national average is versus these [that] are tailored to each individual person,” reports gym franchise owner Darryl Burden. “This product sets us apart. [MYZONE] records movement even when I got out for a run for five miles,” says Lewis. The MYZONE stays around the heart for better statistic accuracy, not on the wrist like other fitness trackers that attempt to give the benefits that only MYZONE can. “MYZONE is the only product on the market right now that reads your body and adjusts to your body,” says Lewis. “If you’re not pushing yourself and you can’t get out of that grey zone then it helps you get into your own personal training and getting more out of the gym, so you’re not just doing the same thing every day.” “We change people’s lives with this and everything else we’ve got in here. I have the best time here with all of this technology that a lot of people don’t even know we have. From the MYZONE, to the

chiropractor, to the body scan machine, to the TRX, fitness…”and the list of member benefits goes on Lewis advises. At 99.4% accuracy MYZONE helps users of all ages, shapes, and sizes stay motivated to keep working out and to move forward in their fitness journey. Snap Fitness in Pennsburg is offering a MYZONE fitness tracker for FREE to new members of Snap for a limited time in January when they sign up, so there is no time like the present to start working towards a healthier body and the results you dream of. Snap Fitness is a 24/7 facility where members have access to all of the over 2,000 locations worldwide. Visit the Pennsburg location at 476 Pottstown Ave, Pennsburg, PA 18073 or call them at (267) 9235891 to find out how you can get healthier for the new year and ask about how the MYZONE fitness band can benefit you.

#LIVINLAVIDALOCAVORE What’s in your Fridge?

Whether you are the person who makes a detailed shopping list or someone who goes to the store for milk and walks out with 10 items doesn't matter. What you bring home does. If your fridge is full of processed foods crammed with dyes and preservatives you are adding toxins to your body. When you look inside your refrigerator or pantry, take a look at the nutrition label. If you can only pronounce some of the ingredients, that means the items added to your food are preservatives or “fillers” that are unnecessary to add to your body or your children’s bodies. To make fresh baked bread you only needs 3 ingredients; flour, water and yeast. How many times have you seen a long list of ingredients on the back of the bread bag? By shopping with small, local businesses you will find they offer healthier products than your local supermarket. When you eat foods filled with preservatives you are defeating yourself even before you eat it. Why not purchase free range chicken from Locust Point Farms or hormone-free milk from Merrymead Farm? Locavore can help. We can make you the hero of the kitchen and help you feed your family a healthy, locally-sourced meal. Not only can we provide all the healthy and tasty food you desire, but also deliver it, saving you even more time to enjoy your new healthy lifestyle. Put your feet up or spend more time with the children, because you won’t be spending it food shopping. Shopping local by buying nut butters from Nutty Novelties in Telford or gourmet jams from Small Batch Kitchen in Harleysville helps put money back into your local community. Not only are you able save time and eat great, you are also supporting your very own community. By buying local you are also supporting the local members of your community and helping to grow their businesses. Now make your fridge happy while eating food that makes you feel good while supporting your community. Did you know The Spanish and Portuguese eat twelve grapes as the clock chimes twelve times for midnight, to symbolize the twelve months of the new year. If one is bitter, watch out for that month! Incidentally, eating grapes this quickly is not as easy as it may sound.

Tap Into Local Flavor With Ridge Valley Farm Maple Syrup BY: Noelle Kingsbauer On a cold winter morning few things are as satisfying as a big stack of pancakes drizzled with a decadent swirl of fresh maple syrup. If you crave that sweet flavor that’s synonymous with the wintertime then make your way over to the cozy countryside of Ridge Valley Farm for a sweet treat in the forms of all of the marvelous farm-fresh maple goodies you can imagine. This local hidden gem, located on nearly 30 acres, is a quintessential stop throughout the chilly months for an array of products to satisfy your sweet tooth. Jim and Sue Myers have worked for 18 years to create the perfect maple syrup to offer friends, family, and residents of Southeastern Pennsylvania. “We were just playing around,” explains Jim. “There was a fireplace out back and I had gotten a hold of a couple of restaurant pans. They fit perfectly in the fireplace, so I tapped some trees and put the sap in the pans, started a fire underneath them, and then I’d go do some work. When I’d come back the fire was usually almost out and the sap would be reduced.” Previously giving chocolate as gifts to customers of his prior business, Jim decided to try something new this time.“The syrup tasted pretty good to us, so I decided, what the heck, I’d try [giving] syrup.”

Asking his customers for their opinion to refine what he’d made he was greeted with resounding praise and requests to buy his creation. Educating themselves on the process through seminars and careful testing of the syrup, the Myers have each become a of wealth of knowledge on the process of maple syrup making from start to finish. “It takes almost 50 gallons of sap to make a gallon of syrup,” advises Jim. “We get over 1,200-1,500 gallons of sap in a good day. I can easily make two gallons an hour of syrup.” Assisted by their son-in-law and a friend, the Myers have grown their business to include not only syrup, but candies, maple cream, granola, barbecue sauce, balsamic vinegar and more made from their own maple syrup harvested on the premises. “We pretty much eat everything that we have,” jokes Sue. “Down here we’re the only one [commercially]” explains Sue about their maple syrup farm. As an experienced maple syrup farmer Jim is even occasionally asked by people, interested in starting the harvesting process themselves, to show them the procedure of tapping trees and making the syrup.

Sue & Jim Myers

“I like the idea that, if nothing else, you’re educating someone on something that’s relatively practical for self-survival and sustainability. Once they know how to do it they can always do it.” The maple syrup harvesting season isn’t year-round, however. “I should be tapping trees the first weekend in January and after we get them tapped and everything’s set then usually by the second week I’ll be making syrup,” says Jim. “I’ve been boiling the first week in April, but that’s about the last of it.” With January being an especially tasty time of year to indulge in some maple syrup, either for topping a breakfast treat or baking pumpkin bread with syrup in lieu of refined sugar, there is no time like the present to make your way to 287 Camp Green Lane Road in Green Lane to buy a batch of farm-fresh locally made sweetness. “Like” the Ridge Valley Farm Facebook page to find out what farmers market they’ll be at next and to see their current store hours or call 215-234-9334. 215.234.9334 287 Camp Green Lane Rd. | Green Lane

Nestled at the end of a long, scenic driveway is the farmhouse known as “Pennsburg’s One-Stop Pet Hospital.” Since 1985, Runaway Farm Pet Hospital has been treating pets of the Upper Perkiomen Valley and beyond in their state-of-the-art facility. Not only does Runaway Farm offer affordable veterinary services to dogs, cats and some exotic animals – they also provide pet boarding and grooming. Joe Dobrowolski is the operations manager at Runaway Farm. The owner of two cats, two dogs and lots of fish, Dobrowolski loves animals as well as his job. “I’m in the managerial role and often times behind the scenes. I really enjoy the interactions with the clients.” Before the practice opened, the land was bought by Dr. Kistler, who is the founding member of Runaway Farm. It was originally a chicken farm before transitioning into a full-on veterinary hospital. Dr. Kistler still works part-time at the practice along with Dr. Dave, their full-time doctor. More than 25 employees keep the practice running to serve their roughly 8,000-9,000 patients. Referring to the farm’s unique name, Dobrowolski explains that “one of the partners in Runaway Farm had told me it was named after a poem by Robert Frost, ‘The Runaway’ – and we’re a farm, so we kind of put those two together.” January and February are Dental Awareness months at Runaway Farm, so be sure to make an appointment to keep your furry friend’s teeth clean and breath minty fresh. Runaway Farm also takes an active role in community events, “I always help out when I can with groups in the area,” says Dobrowolski.“For many years we’ve been in the [Love Upper Perk] Halloween parade. Every year you’ll find us at the Community Day for Pennsburg. Anytime you find the local churches or fire companies having a raffle I always try to help out.” During the holidays they also offer pet photos with Santa Claus.

What sets Runaway Farm apart from other area veterinary practices is clear: “We have so many other services than the vet hospital,” states Dobrowolski. “Boarding, doggy day care, retail store… a one-stop shop. Just this year we back training services. Once people start coming here they realize that the industry itself has always been touted as high-cost, so we try to manage our cost as affordable for the average person, but still offering the high-tech services.” These services include laser therapy, preventive medical services, grooming, boarding, and the retail store. This year, Runaway Farm unveiled a mobile app. to give clients an easy way to schedule appointments and to view and print their pets’ vaccine records. The retail store on the premises was added around 1990 where they instituted the “Barn Bucks” rewards program. Now, the app has streamlined “virtual Barn Bucks”for easy access and tracking. Learn more about Runaway Farm Pet Hospital by visiting their website www.runawayfarmvet.com, where you can sign up for the app and book an appointment. Take a drive off the beaten path in Pennsburg to 1002 Runaway Drive and find out what Runaway Farm Pet Hospital can do for your furry friends’ health and wellness.

I T’S TIME TO UNWIND

The holidays can often overwhelm us as a time where we give so much of ourselves that we end up feeling drained at the end of the season of giving. Now that the family parties, friendsgivings, work polyannas, and bank account busters are over, it’s ok to be happy to get back to a usual routine, but it’s also ok to feel a little down too. No matter how you’re feeling about the holiday season being over, there are a few proven ways to boost your mood and help regain some normalcy amid the snowflakes of January.

Ways To Unwind Post-Holiday

1. Be aware of your breathing. When you’re feeling stressed out, take a few moments to notice your breath. You can practice deep breathing anywhere. Standing in line, waiting at a red light, sitting down at your desk... anywhere. Deep belly breathing reduces stress and tension almost immediately.

2. Limit your alcohol consumption and eat healthy. After all of the merry making the past few months cut some sugar and calories by trying new recipes with whole grains, vegetables, and fruit and washing them down with something other than wine or a cocktail. This leads to the next helpful tip. 3. Stay hydrated. Your skin will love you and so will the rest of your body. If you’re not a fan of straight water, try flavored seltzer with a few berries or a splash of juice.

4. Begin and end each day with your gratitude journal. You don’t need a fancy notebook, just grab a few sheets of paper or index cards work. In morning jot down 3-5 things you’re grateful for. Do the same before you go to bed. Try doing this even a few days a week and see the difference it makes in your life.

5. Make time for you! Take a few minutes each day for quiet self-reflection. Hit the gym for a brief walk on the treadmill or take a steamy shower with relaxing music playing in the background. There’s no better investment you can make than an investment in yourself. Nolan, Peggy. (2014, December 22). 7 Simple Strategies to Help You De-Stress From Christmas Overwhelm. Starting Fresh

By Lisa Palmer

A New Year brings happiness, joy, excitement and a lot of new tasks to accomplish. I find it’s a great way of decluttering materials and life in general. Isn’t it amazing how much brighter your room feels after you remove all your holiday decorations? Your rooms become blank canvas just screaming for creativity. There are several steps to take to enhance your existing space. First, settle on a design type. Are you glamour? Industrial? Farmhouse? That will help eliminate any décor that doesn’t fit your canvas.

Once you have settled on a design, start collecting ideas from magazines or home shows. We always ask our clients to create and share a private idea board through Pinterest. This helps determine the look you want for your room. Next, take inventory. Maybe you already have a lamp or painting that can work with your idea. Finally, make a list of everything you still need to bring this plan to life. So if you’re looking to spruce up a room, reach out to Marigoldstaging.com and request a consultation with an idea board. We love seeing your ideas brought to life.

Resolve to Be Exercise improves mood

Did you know that exercising releases hormones and chemicals that may help to improve your mood? Need to blow off some steam after a stressful day? A workout at the gym or a brisk 30-minute walk can help. Physical activity stimulates various brain chemicals such as endorphins, estrogen, dopamine & serotonin that may leave you feeling happier and more relaxed. Want to feel better, have more energy, lose weight, improve your emotional health, and perhaps even live longer? Then it’s time to look at your exercise routine. Everyone knows that the health benefits of regular exercise and physical activity are hard to ignore. And here in The Upper Perkiomen Valley, we have an array of fitness professionals to choose from! Need more reasons to exercise? Check out these ways exercise can improve your life.

Exercise controls weight Exercise can help to prevent weight gain or facilitate weight loss. Engaging in physical activity burns calories. The harder you exercise, the more calories you burn. If you don’t have the time for an actual workout, try to become more active by taking the stairs at work, or dancing while doing dishes!

Exercise combats diseases High blood pressure, stroke, heart disease, high cholesterol, diabetes, arthritis, certain types of cancer, even depression, can all be managed through exercise. In fact, regular physical activity can help you prevent or manage a wide range of health problems in addition to those listed.

Exercise boosts energy Regular physical activity can improve your muscle strength and boost your endurance. Exercise and physical activity deliver oxygen and nutrients to your tissues and help your cardiovascular system work more efficiently. And when your heart and lungs work more efficiently, you have more energy to go about your daily chores.

Exercise promotes better sleep Struggling with insomnia? Regular physical activity can help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep.

The “skinny” on exercise Exercise and physical activity are a great way to feel better, gain health benefits and have fun. As a general goal, aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day. If you want to lose weight or meet specific fitness goals, check out Snap Fitness and the great deal on the cover this month! Whatever you choose, always remember to check with your doctor before starting a new exercise program, especially if you haven't exercised for a long time, have chronic health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes or arthritis, or you have any concerns.

Fit This Year!

Fluid balance

Fatigue buster

Roughly 60 percent of the body is made of water. Drinking enough H2O maintains the body’s fluid balance, which helps transport nutrients in the body, regulate body temperature, digest food, and more.

Move over coffee—water can help fight those tired eyes too . One of the most common symptoms of dehydration is tiredness. Just another reason to go for the big gulp! (Not the 7-11 kind.)

Calorie control

Hangover help

Forget other diet tricks—drinking water could also help with weight loss. Numerous studies have found a connection between water consumption and losing a few pounds. The secret reason? Water simply helps people feel full, and as a result consume fewer calories.

If booze has got the best of you, help a hangover with a glass of water to hydrate the body and stop that pounding headache.

Muscle fuel Sweating at the gym causes muscles to lose water. And when the muscles don’t have enough water, they get tired . So for extra energy, try drinking water to push through that final set of squats.

Clearer skin Certain toxins in the body can cause the skin to inflame, which results in clogged pores and acne . While science saying water makes the skin wrinkle free is contradictory, water does flush out these toxins and can reduce the risk of pimples.

Kidney function Our kidneys process 200 quarts of blood daily, sifting out waste and transporting urine to the bladder. Yet, kidneys need enough fluids to clear away what we don’t need in the body. Let's drink to that!

Productivity boost In order to really focus, a glass of water could help people concentrate and stay refreshed and alert.

Pain prevention A little water can really go a long way. Aching joints and muscle cramps and strains can all occur if the body is dehydrated .

Keep things flowing Nobody wants to deal with digestion issues. Luckily, drinking enough water adds fluids to the colon which helps make things, ahem, move smoothly.

Sickness fighter Water may help with decongestion and dehydration, helping the body bounce back when feeling under the weather. Just beware—drinking fluids hasn’t been scientifically proven to beat colds in one swoop, so don’t swap this for a trip to the doctor or other cold remedies.

Brain boost A study in London found a link between students bringing water into an exam room and better grades, suggesting H2O promotes clearer thinking. While it’s unclear if drinking the water had anything to do with a better score, it doesn’t hurt to try it out!

RESOLUTIONS! yes you can!

by Noelle Kingsbauer

A new year. A new start. A new set of resolutions to tackle. Inevitably one of the first things that came to mind when the ball dropped in Times Square ushering in 2018 was making a resolution to do something you wish you’d done last year. According to Forbes, it’s estimated that only 8% of people stick with their New Years Resolutions. Should that discourage you? No way! If you’ve resolved to make a change in your life, whether it be exercising, spending more time with family, or finally working on a project you’ve been putting off, there are proven ways to keep yourself motivated and get the payoff you’re craving. Once you learn those keys to success you’ve already taken the first step toward making your resolution a reality. Writing a list of exactly what you want to do in specific terms is a helpful way to make a game plan you can stick with. General terms like “I want to exercise more” keep the goal abstract enough to fizzle out. Thinking of how much weight you want to lose, a specific pair of pants you want to fit in, or just committing to “I want to exercise for 30 minutes two days a week” gives a goal you can write down and clearly check back with to see how you’ve progressed. Psychologist Paul Marciano refers to this as the “SMART System” where goals are made Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound. (Forbes) Accountability is also a key ingredient in achieving success throughout the year (and beyond). Letting a friend know you want to go back to school instead of keeping it to yourself can help them encourage you to stay on track and celebrate your successes with you. Don’t be afraid to ask for the support of others. Maybe you will even help someone else be motivated to make a positive change in their own life.

One thing that can be very demotivating when making a lifestyle change is when you have a misstep. It might make you feel like throwing in the towel altogether, but hold strong. “If you don’t have a full hour to workout at the gym, just decide to make it the best 20-minutes you can. If you stumble out of bed and don’t want to do 20-minutes on the treadmill, lace up your sneakers and do five minutes.” As Dr. Marciano says, “Any effort towards your goal is better than no effort.” (Forbes) According NBC News, the following are the most popular New Year’s Resolutions of 2017 per data pulled from Google by iQuanti: 1. Get Healthy 2. Get Organized 3. Live Life to the Fullest 4. Learn New Hobbies 5. Spend Less/Save More 6. Travel 7. Read More Which New Year’s Resolution are you making for 2018 and how do you plan to stick with it? Let us know on the “Love Upper Perk” face book page!
