With extended family in the bee keeping business in Tennessee, Kevin was intrigued enough to give bee keeping a whirl. Kevin’s main concern is the health of his honey bees and colonies. “It is the number one concern from spring to fall, and everything else is secondary”, explains Willauer. Kevin is currently grooming his 11 year old son to help with the family business.

Kevin Willauer has been in the honey business for over a decade. Farming honey bees? Is that such a thing?

It is… and just like pigs, and cows, and chickens, the science of farming bees for honey takes extensive knowledge, dedication, long hours, and in this case, a little bit of pain!

Kevin is the owner of Bucks County Honey Company.

We caught up with Kevin on a sunny day at his farm in Quakertown. The Willauer Family has been farming in the Historic Bucks County Community for over four generations. They have always recognized the importance of family, community, strong beliefs, and paying attention to healthy sustainable farming.

Working together with a small co-op of local bee keepers and apiaries, they taste, hand select, and jar in small batches, only the freshest, highest quality local raw honey available.

We got a chance to see the bees up close, and learned what makes the honey so special at Bucks County Honey Company.If you are an allergy sufferer then you know that consuming local honey helps with seasonal allergies. What makes Bucks County Honey special is that their signature wildflower honey is actually a blend from all the seasons. In this regard it helps with year round allergies!

Kevin manages approximately 60 colonies of honey bees at his property. Most days, he goes without the traditional bee keeper suit, explaining that the heat gets overwhelming, and he needs to keep ahead of the colonies.

Bee management is a full time job. Bees fly approximately 3 miles in search of flowers, and you need to make sure that conditions are perfect to keep them happy. As I observed the honey bees a few feet from the hive for the first time in my life, I can honestly say, they didn’t even notice me, and just went about their business. That seems like a happy honey bee to me!

We wrapped up the tour and I went home with a few jars of honey to try. The flavors and consistency of Bucks County Honey is second to none. I thought I liked honey, and then I tasted the wildflower honey! I have had honey with almost every meal since then and my new hobby is cooking and baking with honey! Let’s face it – When it comes to taking care of ourselves, we may not be doing such a great job. Today’s busy lives demand us to wear a lot of different hats. I know this first hand - I am a mother, a business owner, a wife, a gardener, a kayaker, a camper, a daughter, a self-proclaimed gourmet chef, and a host of other “titles”. So, when I happened upon Satori Spiritual Center located in Hereford, across from the Turkey Hill on route 100, I was intrigued. After all, I could use some empowerment… Who among us can’t?

When I first walked in, I was struck by the tranquility of the space. Owner Angie Vanim has created an atmosphere of calm tranquility that can only be experienced first hand. From the comfortable purple chairs where we sat and had an easy chat, to the salt lamps and thoughtful lighting, to the vibrant purple curtains, no detail has been overlooked. But the true star of the show was the building itself.

Satori Spiritual Center and Gift Shop is located in a 1700’s historic building. The stone walls almost begged to be touched. It was this energy that drew Angie to the space. “I looked at so many buildings, but none of them felt right. I was drawn to this space,” says Vanim.

So when the space was offered for rent, Angie jumped at the chance. Having worked out of her home for the past three years, Angie dreamed of a center where she could bring together a community of practitioners and teachers. “I wanted to create a space where people could come and explore their spirituality in a safe space, a place where they could grow, to discover personal development and overall wellness.”

Angie’s true passion is working with women. “As mothers, we take care of and nurture our families, we juggle work and schedules and manage our households. We tend to put everyone’s needs before our own and as a result, we lose bits and pieces of ourselves along the way” says Angie. “What I really enjoy in coaching is helping women connect with their spirit, teaching them how to discover and honor who they are and ways to give to themselves to create a better balance within.”

Satori Spiritual Center offers Hypnotherapy, Reiki, Spiritual Life Coaching, Thai Yoga Massage and much more. While I was there, I had a chance to experience a Reiki session. Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation. Reiki

promotes peace, a feeling of calm and relaxation. As Angie began, I immediately felt at ease. The tension and stress lifted as I enjoyed soft music, and relaxing aromas. Angie seemed to know intuitively where to focus her energy. It was an amazing feeling of warmth and well being and I will definitely be back!

By Gene Moran The Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776. Despite overwhelming odds, the Colonists geared up for a fight that would last almost seven years after the Declaration, sending the British troops back home in defeat in 1783. Battling and defeating British tyranny was an accomplishment unlike any other in the world. Perhaps what made the situation more excruciating was exposing and neutralizing the “Loyalists” among them that ratted on their neighbors and preferred to live in tyranny as opposed to fighting against it.

Military members and their families have sacrificed every day for more than two centuries for the freedoms which the United States fought so hard to gain and keep. Hundreds of thousands of Americans have been injured or killed in that endeavor. In your family history, it is very likely that someone in your lineage fought for the United States. This meant leaving home, leaving families, leaving

careers and leaving school to put on a uniform to protect and defend fellow Americans and our friends around the world. Families lost their loved ones.

Communities lost leaders and churches lost congregants. The freedoms that we enjoy today come at the cost of unspeakable loss, pain and grief that so many men, women and children endured.

We cannot let their service and sacrifice go unnoticed and forgotten. We must not take our freedom for granted.

As overused as the adage “Freedom isn’t Free” may be, it truly does mean something. Preventing Dog Bites

With Summer upon us and more dogs out walking, whether in your neighborhood, or at the local park, we need to be aware of how to prevent dog bites. Despite 12,000 years of living with dogs, they remain largely misunderstood by humans.

According to the Center for Disease Control 4.5 million Americans are bitten by dogs each year. One in five dog bites result in injuries that require medical attention. Adult males are more likely to be bitten than women. Children from the age of 5 to 9 years are more likely to be bitten than adults. Most dog bites to children are from the family dog or from a familiar dog.

The major cause for facial bites to children can be attributed to hugging and kissing the family dog. Supervision of interactions with dogs and children is a must!

When a dog bites we interpret this in human terms. In most cases the bite is a normal dog behavior. The dog that bites is not necessarily a mean dog or a bad dog - he is just a dog. To prevent dog bites we need to understand what motivates the dog to bite and reduce risk through modification of both human and dog behavior.

We often want to show love to our dogs the way that we show love to each other, through hugs and kisses. Many dogs can learn to accept and tolerate the hugging and kissing but few actually enjoy it. Every dog has an invisible bubble around them called their comfort zone. Humans have an invisible comfort zone, too. When conversing with another human there is a comfortable distance that we can tolerate, say a good 3 to 4-foot distance away. Now how would you feel if they were talking to you just inches from your face? You might tolerate it a few times but if they continued to do this you would tell them to please back off (a human growl). Dogs can’t say please but they communicate by growling along with body language.

Learning to interpret your dog’s body language may help you understand what your dog is trying to tell you. A happy dog pants and wags her tail loosely. The signs of a fearful or anxious dog can be whale-eye (lots of white showing in the eyes), she may turn her head to avoid contact, ears pinned back or tongue thrust like a lizard. A dog that suddenly becomes frozen with no movement can be very dangerous. A dog bite can happen in 1/40th of a second!

Most dogs don’t like being patted on top of the head, they just tolerate it. Try scratching or stroking the dog on the side of the neck, behind her ears or on her chest. My dog loves a good scratch at that hard to reach place at the base of her tail. It makes her go weak at the knees. Play games like fetch, tug-of-war, and hide and seek. Don’t include chasing or rough play like wrestling- or slap fight. Enrolling in a group training class is a great way to learn how to properly interact with your dog.

Summer is finally here and I’m sure you’re finding more and more people outside, barbecue invites and parties! Take a look outback. Is your backyard, patio, or deck screaming for summer love-in?

Here are some ways to bring the sizzling summer days to your backyard.

1) Light up your night. There are a few ways this can be done. If you have a deck or patio, you can buy torches to light and securely place them around the frame. No deck, but have a balcony? Hang battery operated (outdoor safe) paper lights around the space. Another option is to look for umbrellas with built-in lights. You’ll be amazed at how cozy the lighting will make your backyard feel.

2) Think rugs and pillows. Yes outside! Before buying, make sure the label says it’s outdoor/indoor.

That means it’s safe outside and can withstand the intense heat and occasional rain showers. If you have kids, I would recommend using outdoor pillows for inside decoration as well. If anything spills on them, the liquid will bubble to the surface and never stain.

3) Life is always greener with plants. Fill your space with flowers and vines. Always work with height and buy different size plant stands for the area. Put pots that have longer vines at the top so they fall down and provide a flowing effect. Plants deliver so much energy to a space, and we use them in every design project we work on!

This is the second article in our series, Exploring the Parks of the Upper Perkiomen Valley. With the recent addition of the new red and grey signs popping up around the Upper Perkiomen Valley, I am on a quest to visit them all. Being a nature lover, I love nature – being able to explore brings me joy in a big way. So sit back and enjoy this new series each month as I set out to visit all the many parks pointed out by these new signs.

Camelot Park After last month’s extremely rustic foray into The Mill Hill Preservation Area, I decided to play it a little safer this time around. Most residents are familiar with Camelot Park in East Greenville, but if you aren’t, you should definitely make the time to go on a hike along this well groomed path.

Located at 1124 Church Road in East Greenville, you can visit Camelot Park from 7am to dusk. This 102 acre local park has a lot of amenities; including two softball/ little league baseball fields, one soccer

There are plenty of paths cutting through the woods as well, so go explore! Grab a friend, or a pal, as pets are welcome, or just go down alone and reflect on the beauty that surrounds us in The Upper Perkiomen Valley!

Tot Lot

field, a one mile walking trail with a quarter mile gravel track, tot lot, restroom and a pavilion. But what really sets this park apart for me is the walking path. Carefully mapped out and perfectly groomed, this path includes a 1 mile, half mile, quarter mile, and third mile loop.

A convenient color coded map is displayed at the start of the various loops.

My personal favorite is the 1 mile loop. This loop meanders around the fields and skirts a small lake, home to wildlife and wildflowers galore! On my many walks, I have seen baby squirrels frolicking in trees, turtles, various birds, and beautiful native wildflowers.

Dotted by comfortable benches, you can relax and listen to the toads croaking and birds chirping around the peaceful lake.

Living in the comfortably suburban neighborhoods of the Upper Perkiomen Valley, most of us have no doubt made our way through the welcoming doors of a community library. Whether you frequented the storybook shelves as a child, scoured the annals for school research, or borrowed a few intriguing reads for a quite evening at home, local libraries play a large role in our community. According to a 2015 Pew survey, almost two-thirds of adult Americans say that closing their local library would have a major impact on their community. Additionally, over 90 percent of adults consider public libraries as “welcoming and friendly places,” however only about half have visited or otherwise used a public library in the last 12 months.1 The Upper Perkiomen Valley Library, located at 350 Main Street in Red Hill, had an uphill battle to even open its doors. According to their website, the work to create a library for Upper Perk began in 1967 and took continued effort by residents in order to create a space where a library could be made. The group of residence, which is now known as the Library Association, presented their petition to the Borough Councils and Township Commissioners to place the question of granting tax support for a local library, which was eventually allowed as a vote for the people in the local election. Afraid taxes would increase, the funding was voted down, and the creation of the Upper Perkiomen Valley Library was at a stalemate. However, the diligent residents who encompassed the Library Association would not back down from their mission to make a library for the families of the area to enjoy. They went in front of the Montgomery County Library to plead their case and in 1970 and were welcomed in as part of the Montgomery County Library network.

Libraries serve as places that welcome people of all ages, walks of life and education levels.

Today these humbles places are more than arrays of books and movies for rent, they are community organizations that help open the eyes of children, teens, and adults to new ideas and activities.

For children, the Upper Perk Library offers fun events such as Story Time, Animal Friends, Movie Thursdays, and Science in the Summer. Teens aren’t left out either with offerings like author visits, Medieval Manor, Make Music Upper Perk. Adults can join the monthly bridge club, take part in discussions during the Socrates Café, and even purchase discounted museum and zoo passes.

Libraries are truly a place where anyone, no matter what age, education level, or area of interest can find something to intrigue them. Not sure where to start? Just stop in, take a stroll and have a chat with a librarian. You’re sure to find something that’ll tickle your fancy and lead you down a whole new path of discoveries.
