Happy June! June is an exciting month for us, because as summer hits, we are able to enjoy being outside and visiting all the great businesses that bring you great deals! Trust us, it is hard to leave the house in the cold and rain when you have to go in and out of places all day long. But now we get to enjoy the weather, and even take mini breaks in between to visit parks and embrace nature! This month, we roll out another exciting new feature, showcasing the parks of the Upper Perkiomen Valley! Read all about Mill Hill Preservation area this month, and in the upcoming months find out about some really neat places to visit. Bring the kids, or maybe just grab a book and enjoy some peace and quiet, or put on your hiking shoes and go for a walk. Anyway you slice it, Upper Perk has something for everyone! This month our Know your Farmer, Know your Food series takes a look at Windy Spring Farms. This 5 generation farm is putting out some amazing food, and if you are new to the farm to table concept, be sure to check them out and taste the difference fresh makes!. Congratulations to all the graduates this month, and Happy Father’s Day to all the great dads out there, including mine, who taught me how to live local and support the community we live in. Love you Dad! Have a wonderful, safe and happy June! - Donna Are you interested in advertising with us? We offer a variety of packages for every price point starting as low as $20 per month! Stage to Sell By: Lisa Palmer – Owner, Marigold Staging & Design

In the next several months, we will see an increase in homes for sale. Will your house be one of them? Stand out from the rest by staging your home. Here are 3 simple tips to get started:

1.) Declutter. Remove anything in your house that hides its potential. That could include jackets that crowd up closet space, or even too much furniture in one room. Pack it away. It will allow the buyer to see what a magnificent closet or living room you have! 2.) Depersonalize. The potential buyer doesn’t want to see all the pictures of fabulous vacations you’ve taken. They want to picture themselves in this house. Removing the pictures, removes yourself from the house and allows the buyer to visualize the space for themselves.

3.) Neutralize. We all love making a space ours, but that doesn’t mean everyone loves what you’ve done. Take a day to remove the personal touches and paint them with neutral tans or white colors. This will be a blank slate for the new buyer.

Need help?

We can work with you to get your home ready to sell! Head over to our website and blog at www.marigoldstaging.com

Carolina Lara Owner

254 MAIN ST. · EAST GREENVILLE · 267.923.8671

And the pastries. And the sticky buns. And the soup. And the bacon. And the…Oh you get the picture! Java Bake & Co. is back! After a very long 6 week shut down to move across the street to their new digs in the old, recently refurbished historic subway location, Java opened its doors again officially on May 12th. Owner, Carolina Lara says, “I didn’t think people would miss us, but I got SO many emails and phone calls from customers asking us when we were opening again, it made me realize that I did create what I wanted.” And what Carolina wanted was a space where people could gather with friends to chat, to be a part of the community, and to enjoy good coffee and treats. “We are the hub of the community” states Lara.

and vegetarian treats will be on the menu as well.” says Carolina. But the menu will change with the season, and with the growth she predicts to happen as she settles into her new “home”. Visit Java Bake & Co. today and get a taste of what’s cookin’. Convenient 5 minute parking is available right outside so take advantage of their call ahead service and have your order waiting when you get there. And be sure to order a “Donna Breve” if you want a real treat! The new location boasts an expanded kitchen, upgraded equipment, lounging space with comfy seating, and beautiful bakery cases. But what really caught her eye was the historic significance of the building. Carolina lights up when she talks about the building. “I love history. I love being a part of the theater. I love that I could make it mine with Java details but still keep it true to its nature. What many people don’t realize is this building used to be the concession stand for the theater. I love that Ed (the owner of the building) entrusted me to have this beautiful space for my vision. He put so much love and attention to details in the refurbishing. I am overwhelmed to be a part of it all.” says Carolina. A lot has changed in the new space. Because of the different kitchen specifications and equipment, Java will focus on pastries, cakes, and of course coffee. Everything from espresso, to cappuccino and lattes, to my favorite, Café breve, with a whisper of chocolate will be served with a smile. Carolina makes sure she uses as many local ingredients as possible. She sources her eggs locally, and uses local farm fresh produce when in season. Everything is made fresh in house. “When you buy breakfast or lunch from Java Bake & Co. you are setting off a chain reaction of local support. Even our honey is from local bee keepers. “ “We will also be offering more flourless options, and vegan

KNOW YOUR FARMER

KNOW YOUR FOOD Windy Springs Farm If you have ever driven down route 663 towards Quakertown, then I am sure you're familiar with the farm stand right past the Wawa, at the turnpike interchange. But what you may not know is the incredible farm that is responsible for that little farm stand. Owners Matt and Tom Mood are fourth generation farmers. Farmers of 150 head of cattle, 600 broiler chickens, 150 egg layers, honey, produce, and small grain including wheat, rye, hay and straw. Whew!!! Set on 1500 acres of sprawling farm land, Matt and Tom have been farming the land their whole lives. "We used to play hooky from school to help keep the family farm going" says Matt. After graduating from school, their dad encouraged them to learn a trade they could fall back on if farming didn't work out. Matt learned autobody and painting and brother Tom learned auto mechanics. When not working the farm (mostly in winter) they fix up vehicles to sell. The Mood's day starts at around 4am and ends around 10pm most days. "A farmer’s life depends on the weather. You have to love farming to do it." says Matt. And judging by the way he spoke about the farm, you can tell he certainly loves it. The whole family works the land. From the youngest children who have jobs to do, from gathering eggs to running the tractors and equipment, all the way up to Matt's oldest daughter Madison, who graduates High school this year. Madison will be attending Del Val agricultural college in the fall, and runs her own farm stand in Lansdale on Saturday mornings. "Our kids don't have cell phones, but they do get to have plenty of fun on the farm. From snowmobiling in the winter to riding four wheelers, to owning their own cows, the kids get to play hard after working hard. During our tour, we learned some fun facts about Windy Spring farms and farming in general.

We had a chance to collect eggs from the chicken barn. The egg layers are Rhode Island Reds, bred specifically for egg laying. I asked about two eggs that didn't look like the rest. Matt explained they were wooden decoy eggs, placed there so if the chickens pecked them and realized they hurt it would keep them from pecking their own eggs. We skirted around a large honey bee colony, where we learned that in order to grow pumpkins for the fall, the honey bees have to pollinate the pumpkin flowers or the plant wouldn't produce. Honey is the by-product of growing great pumpkins! We noticed a piece of equipment far in the field that was crawling along slowly. Matt told us this was a vegetable picker - a solar powered cart of sorts - that you lay on to pick low ground vegetables like strawberries, but was also equally effective in pulling weeds. At the time we were there, it was being used to pick small weeds from candy onion plants. 16,000 candy onion plants to be exact! My assistant Fran got a chance to give it a whirl, and she was an expert within minutes, happily picking weeds from the small onion plants. I feared I might lose her as an assistant if I let her continue, so off we went to check out the cattle happily grazing in the fields! The cattle are Simmental cattle, with the calves being born on the property and spending their entire lives on the farm. All of the cattle and chickens are fed from crops grown right on the land. The feed is all natural with no hormones or antibiotics from start to finish. Cattle are given hayage, which is hay that is kept airtight so that it can ferment, allowing a higher protein value for the cows. As an added bonus the cattle love it! Matt demonstrated this by giving the call to feed - a loud yell that sounded something like "kaboos, kaboos, yo, yo, had the cattle up on their feet and ready to eat! Beef is available in whole, halves and quarters. Beef is also sold by the pound at their farm stand on route 663 in quakertown, or by calling 215-536-8624 during the winter months. The farm stand is open 7 days a week. October Windy Springs offers corn mazes, hayrides to the pumpkin patch, and plenty of pumpkins. Thank the bees for that one!

The importance of the ethical farming of animals can never be taken lightly. Knowing the why behind your food is as important as ever. When I asked Matt if he ever gets a vacation he simply responded " I get to work the land, be outdoors all day and provide for people. That's a vacation in my book." The Community Connection would like to thank Matt and Tom for taking time out of their busy day to show us around. Visit the Moods Windy Spring Farms stand today and enjoy some fresh local food - from farm to table! #LIVINLAVIDALOCAVORE Eating Local Cost Less Money

By joining together with neighbors to eat locally you are helping the entire planet survive. There are many reasons eating locally helps everyone but three of the biggest benefits of eating locally include: Less Packaging Eating locally requires less packaging At Locavore At Your Door, we specifically use reusable packaging to help avoid unnecessary waste. We package items for delivery in reusable coolers or milk crates. We transfer the cold items to each customers’ own reusable cooler by hand to ensure proper handling and storing techniques. We also work with dairy farms like Penn View Farm, in Perkasie, that supply dairy products in glass bottles. These glass bottles are then cleaned and reused. By drinking milk in glass bottles you are helping cut down on unnecessary waste by preventing the use of thousands of plastic milk containers a year. The best part of drinking milk in glass is that it tastes better! Try for yourself! Less Distance Eating locally requires less distance for food to travel By having the food that you eat travel less miles from producer to consumer you are cutting down on pollution and transportation costs. This helps you enjoy food at the peak of freshness. It also helps reduce transportation costs and supplies. This helps reduce climate change by reducing the amount of pollutants being put into the environment. Don’t delay and eat local today! Less Money Eating local costs less money By eating local you buy fresh items right from the producer or as close as possible to the producer. This helps spend less money on transportation costs, packaging for preservation over travel time and stations for refrigeration and other needs. You are also supporting local small business owners instead of providing the big box chains with money to close down mom and pop businesses. Help out a small business and eat local! Be bigger than just yourself. Help make a change; eat locally and think globally. To learn more and buy local visit: LocavoreAtYourDoor.com/BuyLocal

Sewer Lines If you have a sewer line break, when should you consider changing both the water service line and the sewer line at the same time? Frequently when a property owner has a problem with either a sewer line or if they have a water main break they will have to decide whether to change both lines or not. This a decision that frequently involves thousands of dollars and should be considered carefully. There are a few determining factors involved in making a wise and cost effective decision. Two main factors when deciding whether to replace a house sewer and water line together are whether the two services run within 5′ of each other and whether the existing water service line is either lead or galvanized pipe. Call McClay’s Plumbing for honest answers to all of your sewer line questions, and leave it to the pros!

Rachel is what appears to be a Pit/Lab/Hound maybe mixed with something else. She is about 4 years old and about 55 pounds. Rachel came to us from South Carolina with her 5 puppies last year. She was returned when her adopter could no longer keep her. Rachel is very friendly and great with children too. She had been good with dogs in the past, but can be dog selective, so we would need to do a meet and great if you have another dog in the home.Rachel does need a home without cats and small dogs. She would do best with a fenced in yard because she likes to follow her nose when she is outdoors and can be a handful on the leash. Plus she loves to chase the squirrels. She is also housebroken. Rachel is spayed, up to date with vaccines, heartworm and Lyme negative and microchipped. Her adoption fee is $200.00. Tucked back on 12 acres, this quaint space is home to a private dog park, a rustic heated indoor training space, as well as enough ground for dogs of all shapes and sizes to have fun and train! Marion’s story began when she was laid off from her job as a catering coordinator back in 2007. She had always toyed with the idea of doing something with animals. “bow”. There were lots of other tricks and obedience commands that Ziva did without hesitation. It was easy to see why Molasses Creeks motto is “train without pain”. Marion rewarded all the dogs with small food treats and lots of love and affection. They were eager to please, and genuinely happy dogs! Marion attends seminars throughout the year to keep building upon her extensive knowledge, and has 62 Continuing Education Credits to date. Says Marion, “The more I learn, the more I know I don’t know”. Her list of credentials was extensive, and you can see how dedicated she is to making sure your dog has a positive experience in the many classes she offers.

Marion and Mizz Ziva take a bow for all her hard work Doggie Daycare was a consideration, but her passion had always been training. Early photos of Marion always show her with a dog by her side, and she can’t remember a time when she wasn’t in love with animals.

Molasses Creek also offers a private dog park, which can be rented out for doggie play dates, or even simply to exercise an anti-social dog. Bring your puppy under 4 months of age to a free “Yappy Hour” Thursdays at 7pm, or Saturdays at Noon. Molasses Creek offers everything from puppy and adult manners classes, to trick training, clicker training, therapy dog training, and even canine good citizen courses. Check out their website at molassescreekdogtraining.com for more information and classes, or give Marion a call at 267-934-6999 and find out how you can make your dog a happy dog!

When Nicole and I stopped out to meet Marion, we also got to meet with Kai, an Australian Mix with a lot of energy, and Mizz Ziva, a greyhound lab mix. Ziva is known as “the bullet” at her doggie daycare, and one look at those long legs and body built for racing and you can see why! Marion is a certified trick dog instructor, so when my daughter, Nicole, showed an interest in that side of training, Marion was eager to show off some of Ziva’s hidden talents, and from the first trick to the last, we were hooked! We saw tricks like “Achoo!!” where Ziva found a tissue box, grabbed out a single tissue and brought it to Marion. When Marion was done, another command had Ziva dropping the tissue into a small trash can! We also got a glimpse of “kisses”, “Peek-a-boo”, “Shy”, “speak” (and little woof – too adorable for words!) and

Teach your Dog to Love the Veterinarian by Molasses Creek

In a typical exam, a veterinarian will look in your puppy’s eyes, ears, and mouth; listen to her heart and lungs; touch and probe her belly; manipulate her joints; and - nobody’s favorite - take her temperature. Puppies that are regularly handled and touched all over are less fearful and more likely to regard touching as affection. A great way to help your puppy tolerate handling is to play a game called Touch. Grab a handful of pea-sized yummy treats. Find a quiet comfy spot. Now say “touch” to your puppy then touch the dog’s ear for a second; release and give her a treat. Say “touch” then touch the other ear for a second and give her a treat. I progress from there to actually lifting and looking into the ear canal for a second, but be sure to say “touch” before and offer the treat right after the exam. The puppy usually starts to gets happy when she hears the word “touch” because she knows a treat is coming next. From there, work on a simple lip lift on the left side of her mouth and then right side. You can make it more fun by smearing a little peanut butter or yogurt on the gums instead of a treat. Always say “touch” followed by the reward after the exam. Now progress by lifting one side of the puppy’s mouth to expose the teeth. Remember it’s a game. If the puppy isn’t having fun, stop. Lots of puppies are sensitive about having their paws handled. Say “touch” then gently and quickly stroke your puppy’s paw then hand her a treat. Once your puppy is happy about the brief touch you can leave your hand on her paw just a little bit longer before giving her the treat. Gradually work up to holding the paw, then giving gentle squeezes, and eventually touching the toe nails. Remember to add the tail, belly and back with this game. You may not want to do a full session of touch in one sitting. Break it up into short fun sessions. In addition, when you regularly spend time touching your puppy, you will be more likely to notice changes such as lumps, swelling, or tenderness that may indicate health problems. Remember to bring yummy treats like canned cheese, pieces of real meat, or peanut butter with you to the vet!

Exploring the Parks of

THE UPPER

Pe r k i o m e n Va l l ey With the recent addition of the new red and grey signs popping up around the Upper Perkiomen Valley, I decided to do some exploring. I love nature, and all the parks that are local to our beautiful valley, but I have to admit, there are quite a few of them I have never heard of. So sit back and enjoy this new series each month as I set out to visit all the many parks pointed out by these new signs. Mill Hill Preservation Area First Up in our new series is The Mill Hill Preservation Area. Located at 1067 Mill Hill Road, in East Greenville, this is a lesser known area in Upper Hanover Township. I noticed the new sign on Route 29, directing me to this curiosity. About a mile down the road, on the left hand side, I came across the preservation area, well marked by a green and white sign. I pulled in, ready to explore some nature. For the purpose of this series, I specifically wanted to focus on some of the lesser known parks, before launching into the more well known ones like Camelot Park and Green Lane Reservoir. As I pulled in to the spot, I was beginning to regret that decision as I didn’t think I would find much to write about. You see, Mill Hill Preservation Area, is just that.An area that seems to be preserved with no human involvement or beautification. I wondered if this was purposeful, or if the park had just fallen into hard times, with no one maintaining the area. Either way, there were some interesting things going on here, so I decided to press on. The area is a small circular gravel parking lot, outlined by woods. I was happy to see that no one had dumped any garbage in the area, and it really did seem to be untouched by human hands. I parked my car and started poking around the area, anxious to take a hike in the untouched woods.

and wasps, I imagine this area would be a great find for the seasoned hiker to explore further. If you like an un-groomed hiking trail, this is the one for you! Next month, I think I might rethink my direction and hit a more maintained park! Happy Exploring!

One of the many new signs in The Valley

Directly towards the back of the area was what appeared to be an overgrown path so I trekked that way, hoping to find some native wildflowers or interesting wildlife. Unfortunately, the path was quite overgrown with poison ivy (leaves of three, leave them be!), so I didn’t make it very far before having to turn back. There was a log across the path with a sign which I didn’t get close enough to read, as there seemed to be quite a bit of wasp activity going on in that path as well. I turned back and skirted around to the left of the circular parking lot. This path seemed to be blocked by several bones of a long deceased deer. It was interesting to see how the bones were laid out, almost completely intact. Again, I don’t know if this is the intention of the Preservation Area, or if I just happened to stop by at an unfortunate time. I imagine for anyone interested in a teaching experience for a natural park, this would be the area to explore. While I am not daring enough to duck over logs, through poison ivy

Take a Hike by Noelle Kingsbauer

There’s nothing that boosts a mood quite like a little sunshine. Now that the sun is out later and its warmth is touching flowers instead of snow, we can all breathe a sigh of relief that summer fun is ahead. Community events are in full swing, pool parties are on the horizon, and there is no better time to get outside. In the Upper Perkiomen Valley there are countless trails to travel, lakes to dip your toes into, and paths fit for biking. No matter if you’re looking for a full day of fun with the family or just a break to sneak away alone you can find opportunities to enjoy nature any time of the day. Nearby Green Lane Park is hosting a Family Fishing Program on Saturday, June 16th at 9:00am. This program will introduce the basics of aquatic ecology, fishing equipment and techniques for all ages including children with an accompanying adult. After learning the ropes kids can go catch some fish in Deep Creek Lake. No fishing license is required and rods, tackle and bait are supplied. Registration is required, so call 215-234-4528 for more information. If you are feeling antsy after a day of sitting at the office you can bring some friends and family to Green Lane Park on Friday, June 22nd, at 8:30pm to have fun catching PA’s state insect- the firefly. No registration is required for this old-fashioned activity, just arrive at the Tennis Court Parking lot (2298 Green Lane Rd. in Green Lane) with a non-breakable bug-catching container. This is a fun way to enjoy nature, learn a little, and bring back childhood memories in the moon light. Call 215-234-4528 to find out more. A sunny afternoon is the perfect time to break out your bike and enjoy the trails in the area or get a little exercise peddling through your neighborhood. Check out Montgomery County’s Parks, Trails, & Historic Sites page to see al list of the areas nearby where you can get some sunshine and work up a sweat in the great outdoors: https://www.montcopa.org/31/Parks-Trails-HistoricSites. You’ll also be able to see a calendar of upcoming events for Green Lane Park as well as surrounding areas and a map of what sites are nearby. Sometimes the best memories you can make aren’t with much money spent or pre-planning. Laying out under the stars with a blanket and your sweetheart might be just the break you need after a long work week. Don’t forget about some of the local wineries in the area that might add a delicious touch to your romantic evening. Visit a farmer’s market to buy strawberries to dip in chocolate too! What are you most excited to do outside now that it’s springtime? Let us know on the Love Upper Perk Facebook page!
