Dear friends, I have often heard that building a new business is like building a house of cards; the most successful of which take planning and careful maneuvers with each step. Now, imagine trying to do this in a canoe, on a fast moving river, during a hurricane. Well, I think that pretty much sums up what it has been like trying to build Java & Friends over the past 8 weeks. We had a wonderful grand opening and a strong week to follow... only to be told that we needed to close one week post opening. Then, one day it happened... we grabbed our plans and our proverbial deck of cards, jumped into our canoe and plunged into the river. Why, you ask? Well, as we sat on the bank of the river contemplating our next move, our friends, neighbors, customers all came by with a piece of the solution... a life jacket, a stabilizing bar, a big umbrella... all of the things that allowed us to start building. And the more we built, the more YOU all came out with new ways to support us. Before we knew it, the roughest part of the river was behind us, the sun started to peek through and our card house was growing in ways that we couldn’t have anticipated. And now, here we are today... the waters are still rough and the boat remains a little wobbly, but with all of the love and support we are receiving, we are building and growing. And by you supporting us, we are able to support others. We make it a practice to take care of many, many different groups and organizations, as our way of helping them stabilize their vessels on their journeys. There is nothing we love more than discovering new ways to give back to our community. So, it is with the deepest and most sincere part of our hearts that we thank YOU for helping us during the most precarious of times. There are no words that can fully explain the level of gratitude we feel towards everyone who has been part of our growth. We look forward to having a GRAND RE-OPENING, but until that time, we will continue to share our kind of love to you, and find ways to make our little corner of the world just a little bit better. How to Train a Pandemic Puppy

How can I safely and effectively socialize and train all the new puppies and rescues now, not when the pandemic lock down is over? I’m elated to hear people are adopting and emptying the shelters. New foster parents are helping. But, how can I teach without a classroom? Well, this Grandma got tech-savvy quick. Thank goodness my friend Crystal gave me a quick tutorial around a distance learning platform software. I’ve always liked bells and whistles; so, it was quite easy for me to transition to the live online classroom. My clients who were forced to cross over from the brick-and-mortar classroom to the online classroom were a little skeptical at first, but have been giving me some really great feedback. I can teach loose leash walking outside with two different camera angles. I have Bluetooth ear buds and a mic. All you need is to listen, watch, and do. My trick dog class is more fun. I’m very impressed how people can be so creative. One of my younger students, Teagan, used a mop handle across the lower rungs of a chair to make a nice low jump for her dog. I can say it’s been a paws-itive learning experience for me. It has really opened my eyes to the many advantages of working live online for many dogs that may have not been a candidate for regular classroom in the past. All the client needs is a smart phone, iPad, laptop, or PC with a camera. It can be set up within a minute. I am offering live online group or private classes. Socially Distance Dance your heart out! Like so many small businesses in our community, Studios on Main has endured a lot of hardship during the Covid-19 pandemic. March through June is typically our busiest and most exciting season, full of performances, competitions and our annual showcase. While we are understandably disappointed to miss out on these events, we are thankful that our staff and dancers have remained healthy! Despite the challenges, our studio family has been thriving in new ways. Online platforms like Skype and Zoom have allowed us to continue to provide the very best dance opportunities and classes for our dancers. Our staff and students have adapted quickly to the changes and challenges online learning have brought. We now offer many styles of dance and theatre classes in an online format, 5 days a week, in a pay what you can or for free format. In addition to their regular classes with our professionally trained staff, our students have also been introduced to dance workouts, conditioning sessions and masterclasses with industry professionals. We even have students participating in virtual dance competitions! While we’ve adapted to this “new normal”, we are very excited to get back in the studio as soon as safely possible and come back stronger than ever! Studios on Main has always been committed to providing our community with the very best dance and tumbling education at an affordable price. Globally, 4,102,849 individuals have been confirmed infected with COVID-19 leading to 282,719 deaths. As of Mother’s Day, 1,329,791 individuals have been confirmed in the United States with 79,528 deaths. These are difficult numbers to digest. How quickly our lives have changed over the past 3-4 months. In January we heard of a virus causing a strange pneumonia in people living in China, and by the end of February we were preparing in the United States for the coronavirus. Still, in Montgomery county and in the Upper Perkiomen Valley people went about their days, going to work, school, and other fun activities not really understanding or believing it would be that bad. However, though I had never seen anything like this in my 46-year career as a nurse I knew this was more than a passing “flu”. At Family Caregivers Network I began to prepare our staff for what was coming, taking inventory of our PPE, placing orders for more gloves and masks so that we would not run out. We set up a disinfecting station with directions for each person who entered our office and began screening everyone for symptoms. We sent out letters to all clients and families advising them what symptoms to monitor their loved ones for, we began checking temperatures daily and screened for coughs or shortness of breath. We educated our staff on

better precautions to take and made sure they had masks, gloves, gowns, and thermometers on hand for each client we visited at home. Some individuals asked if this was all really necessary, but before long they understood it was. Family Caregivers Network is a PA licensed home care agency which is an essential business with essential workers. Our staff of nurses, home care aides, and Live-in caregivers continued to do the essential job of caring for others in our communities never questioning if the risk was too great. And they continue every day, day in and day out, leaving their homes to care for others in need. I am proud to employ this amazing team of individuals who care for and support the elders in our local communities. I want to say “Thank You” to all of my staff for their unwavering commitment and dedication during the COVID 19 pandemic. You are my true Heroes.
