As a nurse, Gerry Fioriglio knows firsthand the emotional and physical work involved in caring for a loved one. Her experience doesn’t only come from years of working for the families of others, but from being a caregiver to her own mother for many years.

“You need to stop working for other people and you need to do it for yourself” was her mother’s wish that echoed with Fioriglio even after her mother’s passing.

In 2000 that wish became a reality when she decided to start the journey of incorporating her own business to serve the community. Now, with over 20 employees working with her, Fioriglio is proud to serve both residents of Montgomery and Bucks counties with Family Caregivers Network, Inc. “I tell families that most people don’t even realize that they’re the caregiver of a loved one,” explains Fioriglio. “They think they actually need to be showing up at their house and providing care like bathing, dressing, etc. No, you’re a caregiver when you begin to have to worry about your loved one.

You’re worrying about whether they take their medicine. You may take them for doctor’s appointments and things. You are now classified as a caregiver.” It’s this often-overwhelming responsibility that brings phone calls to Family Caregivers for help in services and support for their loved one.

“That really is the time [to call], when you start seeing those small changes and you have to intervene and help them along the way. It’s smart to come and ask questions. Gather information because you’re loved one’s situation can change at a moment’s notice, so arm yourself with the information beforehand.”

As a visible fixture at 901 Main Street in Pennsburg, Fioriglio and her staff provide services for individuals and their families in many aspects of non-medical home care including in-home senior care and assistance to those with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Diseases. “We provide aid service…helping people stay in their homes when they need help with bathing, dressing, meals and general assistance” including taking them for appointments, advises Fioriglio.

The helping hand Family Caregivers provides is for many stages of a person’s life as they need assistance, including hospice. “We’ll collaborate with hospice to make sure when they’re declining they’ll have someone who can sit down and help families figure out the maze of long-term care services,” advises Fioriglio. “So many people make mistakes along the way and all of a sudden they don’t qualify for something that maybe they would have qualified for if it wasn’t for one decision that they made. I really help them to understand the decisions they’re about to make.”

These decisions can be overwhelming for anyone acting as a caregiver for their loved one, whether they’re the child or spouse of someone who needs assistance. “So many people don’t understand there is funding you can get if you qualify for different programs,” says Fioriglio. “Family Caregivers can help you fill out paperwork to qualify for various programs through the county and state and even pertaining to certain physical ailments you have to qualify for funding.”

As a family member it often feels like no one can take care of your loved one better than you can because you know him or her best, even though the task of care can be overwhelming. “Statistically two thirds of caregivers out there will pass away or come down with a serious medical condition before their loved one passes on. The stress is just phenomenal so caregivers end up in the hospital and there’s another crisis. It’s known that it will shorten the lifespan so it’s really important to get that help. The weight is heavy and we’re there to lighten it.”

Often times looking up how to file paperwork through an Internet search can yield more questions than answers. “Where do I start?” and “What do I do?” are some of the most common questions they receive from first-time clients. “I usually tell them ‘tell me your story,’” responds Fioriglio. “It helps them understand we’re not just selling you a service, we’re selling you an overall service.”

Most of the people, both patients and families, who contact Family Caregivers, are very in crises when they make contact, Fioriglio explains. “I probably should have come to you a month ago” is a common phrase that is heard and in response, the supportive staff echoes the same feeling: “We’ll figure it out.

We’ll have someone there.” Offering education classes and support groups, Family Caregivers provides information to arm the caregiver and patient with the information and assistance they need.

Handbooks are given to all families coming in for services that include helpful information on care services, articles on safety in the home, as well lists of dates, times and locations of their programs.

The feeling of genuine care and passion for helping others is felt as soon as you step into the office and see the photos adorning the wall of patients they’ve cared for along the way as well as a mural showcasing the Family Caregivers code of ethics. “When you meet with [families] in their own home it grounds you that you can really empathize with them with what they’re going through. Helping calm their nerves and to let them know that you’re going to be there and help figure out a plan. That is the most rewarding,” says Fioriglio.

Preserves & Infused Sea Salts

Mojo Glaze 8 Cloves Garlic – Minced ½ Cup Onion – Chopped ½ Teaspoon Cumin 1 Cup Orange Juice ½ Cup – 1 Cup Hot Pepper Spread (adjust to desired heat/sweetness) ¼ Cup Lime Juice Olive Oil Salt and Pepper to Taste Sautee Onion and Garlic until soft. Remove from heat – mix in remaining ingredients.

Prepare 4-6 hours ahead of time and store in fridge. Serve at room temperature.

For ham: Reserve 1 cup of mojo glaze for serving. Pour half of remaining sauce over top of ham. Bake in oven until an instant read thermometer reads 140 degrees (about 15-18 minutes per pound). Baste every 2030 minutes with remaining Mojo glaze.

Serve with reserved Mojo Glaze.

For Chicken/Fish: Reserve 1 cup of glaze for serving. Brush with Mojo Glaze and bake/grill until cooked through. Serve with reserved Mojo Glaze.

Mix Hot Pepper Jelly with citrus juices and seasonings to create a Mojo style glaze perfect for Ham (or Fish or Chicken).

St. Patrick’s Day Recipe:

Colcannon

There are as many colcannon recipes as there are cooks in Ireland. This one uses softened and crunchy savoy cabbage, as well as garlic and leeks for extra depth. It is my favorite!

Ingredients • 5 medium Yukon Gold potatoes (about 1¾ pounds) • Kosher salt • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided • 2 leeks, white and pale-green parts only, diced • 2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced • 2 cups shredded savoy cabbage • 1¼ cups milk • ½ cup heavy cream • Freshly ground black pepper • 1 scallion, thinly sliced Recipe Preparation • Cover potatoes with water in a small pot; season with salt. Bring to a boil over mediumhigh heat, then reduce heat and simmer until a paring knife slides easily through the flesh, 30–40 minutes. Drain, let cool slightly, and peel.

• Meanwhile, melt 4 Tbsp. butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add leeks and cook, stirring frequently, until very soft, 8–10 minutes. Add garlic and cook, stirring frequently, until garlic is fragrant and leeks are just beginning to brown around the edges, about 3 minutes longer. Add 1 cup cabbage and cook, stirring constantly, until wilted. Add milk and cream and bring to a simmer.

• Add potatoes and remaining 1 cup cabbage, then coarsely mash with a potato masher.

Season with salt and pepper.

• Transfer to a serving bowl. Top with remaining 2 Tbsp. butter & sprinkle with scallion.

One of the most difficult things we, as pet owners, need to navigate is saying goodbye to our beloved family members. There are so many questions we need answered and all too often we conjure up scenerios or have unrealistic expectations related to end of life procedures, activities, and decisions. Even the thought of losing a pet makes most peoples’ heart sink which is probably why we don’t have this conversation in general.

Most everyone’s primary concern is for his or her pet’s quality of life (QoL) over quantity of life. Nobody wants their pet to suffer. The most basic of guidelines for determining a pet’s QoL requires answering 3 questions: Is my pet interested in interacting with me? Does he or she still have an appetite and interest in eating and drinking? Can my pet still carry out basic life supporting activities such as going to the bathroom appropriately?

It is very important to utilize the relationship with your veterinarian when making determinations about your pet’s QoL; he or she has extensive expertise in this topic and (hopefully) knows you and your pet. I frequently encounter people who, understandably so, do not want to make the decision to euthanize a declining pet. The hope is the pet will pass on his or her own. This rarely happens and even more rarely does it happen without suffering. As difficult as it is for the pet, the owner also suffers watching this family member pass away. If you decide you want to let your pet go on their own, a discussion with your vet can provide necessary support and direction in minimizing suffering.

Euthanasia is a valuable privilege given to veterinarians, which allows us to alleviate suffering in animals. I frequently give cryptic advice to people who ask how to know when the time is right: “you’ll just know” is my standard answer and the vast majority of people confirm it. There are a few people who genuinely don’t “just know” and that’s one of the many ways a good relationship with your veterinarian helps.

Your veterinarian will be able to guide you, using his or her knowledge of you and your pet, a plan can be created. I often recommend people use a calendar and mark each day with a “G” for good or “B” for bad day; this allows a quantitative review of how your pet is doing overall. The idea then is when your pet is having more bad days than good ones, you know his or her QoL is declining and it is time to take action…

It is with a sad heart that I would like to let all of Gunnar’s friends know that he has passed. Everyone that had the pleasure to get to know him and his HUGE personality loved him. It is because of this outstanding personality that the Dear Gunnar column was conceived. He will be sorely missed, but rest assured, he will be back to answer all of your pet related questions shortly. In the meantime, please hug your furry friends, and give them some extra treats tonight, courtesy of Gunnar, the best dog there ever was. Miss you buddy!

Every veterinarian I know handles the actual euthanasia appointment differently. You should talk to yours to know exactly what to expect and to discuss any specific concerns or requirements you have. In our area we can bury our pets at home if that is preferred. The other option for disposition of a pet’s remains is cremation. With cremation you can get your pet’s individual ashes or cremains back if you choose. Many people who decide not to get their pet’s cremains choose to memorialize him or her with a paw print, a lock of fur, pictures or even tattoos; the options are limitless. No matter what, our pets truly do leave paw prints on our hearts and despite how difficult it is to say good-bye, a heart-full of happy memories stays with us forever.

Another way to help the environment is by being conscious of the amount of water you use.

Taking a shower instead of a bath reduces the amount of water used and if you can shave a few minutes off of that shower it will reduce the water and heating bills even more. Speaking of water, consider buying a purifying filter for your tap water instead of investing in bottled water.

Bottles used to package water take over 1,000 years to bio-degrade and if incinerated, they produce toxic fumes. Try installing compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) when your older incandescent bulbs burn out. Unplug appliances when you're not using them or use a "smart" power strip that senses when appliances are off.

This cuts "phantom" or "vampire" energy use. Wash your clothes in cold water whenever possible also. It is estimated that as much as 85% of the energy used to machine-wash clothes goes to heating the water. When you’re done with the clothes in the washing machine, use a drying rack or clothesline to save the energy otherwise sucked up by the dryer.

Happy St. Paddy’s Day! The magic of March is upon us with the first day of spring on the 20th and a lucky little holiday just a leap of a leprechaun before that. Clovers, pots of gold, soda bread and more culminate to make March 17th St. Patrick’s Day. What many of us think of today as a global celebration of Irish culture is for some full of whimsy for others full of parties. No matter how you celebrate, St. Patrick’s Day is a day that is rich in history.

Have you ever wondered what the difference is between the abbreviations of “St. Patty’s Day” and “St. Paddy’s Day”? As one website explains, “’Patty’ is a woman's name. The nickname used for a man named Patrick, for example, the man named Patrick who is credited with converting great swaths of Ireland to Christianity, is ‘Paddy,’ from the Irish Padraig.” Another way to think about how this can offend some strict St. Patrick’s purists is like this: “Calling St. Patrick's Day ‘St. Patty's Day’ is like referring to Christmas Eve as ‘Christie's Eve’ or Hanukkah as ‘Helen's Festival of Lights.’"

Now that we’ve got his holiday’s name in line, Saint Patrick himself deserves some back-story. Alive during the fifth century, St. Patrick is the patron saint and national apostle of Ireland. Born in Roman Britain, he was kidnapped and brought to Ireland as a slave at age 16. He later escaped, but returned to Ireland and was credited with bringing Christianity to its people. Possibly the most well known legend regarding St. Patrick is how he explained the Holy Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) using the three leaves of an Irish clover, better known as the shamrock.

Food and drinks are a big part of any holiday’s celebrations and St. Patrick’s Day is no exception. No matter if you’re celebrating on the Erin Express with a group or rolling Irish potatoes solo food makes up some of the most fun memories of this holiday. “A 2012 estimate pegged the total amount Americans spent on beer for St. Paddy's celebrations at $245 million.” The traditional Irish-American staple of corned beef and cabbage doesn’t have anything to do with the grain corn. “Instead, it’s a nod to the large grains of salt that were historically used to cure meats, which were also known as ‘corns.’”

Now that you’ve had a quick dose of St. Paddy’s Day trivia, enjoy yourself this coming Saturday and impress your friends over a few green beers. As the Irish say, “Erin Go Braugh…” Ireland Forever!
