Another month has rushed right by and it seems like we just said goodbye to the holidays! Running a monthly magazine means always thinking months ahead, so for us here it already seems like summer. KNOW YOUR FOOD of thanking Adam for letting him sleep there was to cook dinner with whatever he had from the farm. Most of the time this involved chicken or pork from the animals he had raised and slaughtered at the farm.

Adam was still vegetarian, but how could he say "no thank you" to the food that his friend had raised, slaughtered, and prepared for him to eat with his own two hands?? It was then that he came to realize the difference between small-scale and large-scale farming, and what knowing your food really meant. He was never vegetarian again, and has been in total support of small local farms ever since.

Meet husband and wife farmers, Adam Klein and Stephanie Zimmerman-Schmitt, the owners of Morgan Creek Farms in Quakertown. With the recent farm to table movement gaining in popularity, The Community Connection set out to discover what it takes to get the food we love to our tables. What we discovered was a passion for farming so deep that we are now customers for life. One could say Stephanie was born to be a farmer. Her grandparents owned the farm the couple now calls home since 1939. Running water and electricity wouldn’t be an option until 1950! Adam and Stephanie took over the farm in 2014, and began specializing in heritage breed pasture raised pork in 2016. Bacon you say? Not just any bacon. Adam and Stephanie utilize natural and sustainable farming methods which benefit the land, the animals and us as consumers. But why pig farming? Stephanie was eager to answer. “Xena started my passion. She was the first pig I worked with that I built a relationship with.” Stephanie had worked on hog farms in the past, so she was no stranger to the hard work that hog farming entails.

As for Adam, his is an interesting tale. When he was about 6 years old, he saw the movie Babe, which was when he originally fell in love with pigs. He wouldn't eat pork for years after. Later, when he was in high school he became vegetarian. He had learned a lot about conventional farming practices and large meat production farms and slaughterhouses, and did not want to be supporting that type of meat production.

He felt that it was not good for the environment, caused us to lose touch with where our meat actually came from, and did not show any respect for the animals. He surmised that the meat couldn't be good for us if the farming practices weren't good for the animals. Fast forward to his college days in Vermont. He had a friend who graduated the year prior and started a farm; in the winter he would come stay with him and his roommate at their apartment when he didn't have things to do at his farm. His way

But owning a diverse sustainable small farm is no picnic. Take feeding for instance. Adam and Stephanie make their own grain, which consists of a diverse mix of wheat, oats, barley, rye, alfalfa, soy, minerals and non-gmo corn. All of the grain comes from within 5 miles of their farm, although they do have plans to begin to grow their own crops next year.

The pigs need to be fed twice a day, and with the couple both working full time jobs outside the farm, this means they have to put in a lot of hours before heading into work!

Though our visit was on a cold and rainy day, we got a chance to meet the real stars of the show. Larry, a 900 pound boar, the “stud’ of the farm was not camera shy! Two female breeders, Ophelia and Bella were eager to get in the picture. Adam was quick to point out that Xena is also quite a “ham”! We learned that each female gives birth to 10 piglets on average.

Morgan Creek Farm breeds their females only twice per year, to give the piglets longer time on the mother’s milk. All of the animals on the farm are treated with love and respect. No antibiotics, hormones, or animal by-products are ever used. They insist on using an artisan butcher, to bring you the best cuts of meat, as well as a wide variety of artisan sausage, such as spinach, roasted red pepper and feta, and maple breakfast sausage. We had a chance to sample some of the delicious varieties of sausage they offer, as well as some different pork cuts and what a difference in taste! What attributes to this difference?

Named after his beloved granddaughter and her dog, John Henning and his wife Deb began Caitlyn and Cody’s Diner and Restaurant to celebrate the love of family and the passion for good food. Located just off of the Quakertown exit of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, Caitlyn and Cody’s has been serving up from-scratch cookin’ and cocktails since May of 2011. Hungry diners from around the world traveling through the Quakertown area have made a stop at Caitlyn and Cody’s and John hopes even more locals will come to discover their family-friendly restaurant full of tasty treats at a reasonable price.

The Henning’s original business plan was to open a family fun center in Quakertown as they had done in Lansdale, however the space at 1907 John Fries Highway seemed destined to be a restaurant. “We started in Lansdale originally and we were just doing arcade games,” explains John Henning.“Then we came to Milford(Township) and we were going to do a fun center here with a bowling alley. Now we’re going to stay in the restaurant mode. We do banquets and events. Penn State does classes here, a lot of people do baby showers, bridal showers, and family reunions.” With ample indoor and outdoor seating Caitlyn and Cody’s is the perfect location to bring a large group, or just a few friends for a great night out.

We make it all here from scratch. We make our own pizza sauce, meatloaf, lasagna…from our own recipes.”

Caitlyn and Cody’s is open from 7:00am to 10:00pm in the summer and until 9:00pm in winter. Their location is especially convenient for travelers staying in the hotels next door so they can have a yummy place for food and drinks that is easy to find and within walking distance for some. Diners of all ages can find something to enjoy on their heaping 5-page menu. Their all-day breakfast menu even offers the “Cody Pancake” where you can enjoy two pancakes cut to look like a dog. Later in the evening you can enjoy one of their 14 draft beers at their the tropical-feeling bar while you watch the game on one of their flat-screen TVs.

We all know the saying. March winds; April showers; Bring May Flowers. Well this year it seemed more like March snow; April snow; Bring May Summer. The flowers have been so desperate to rise, and by Mother’s Day all the beautiful floral arrangements will be displayed everywhere you go.

Design is found in many things, and one of my favorites is in flowers. Floral design peaks at this time of year. What better way to welcome spring and summer than with flowers? Start brainstorming now about what colors you want to have blooming all season. You could do one color in the front of the house, and a different in the back. For example, this year I plan to work with a lot of reds and whites with green vine accents. I plan to do this in the front and back of the house.

Need flower recommendations? For vines I would suggest using the white vine called Sweet Alyssum.

They’re such a beautiful accent to any color flower you pick and super easy to manage.

For flowers, I typically stay with Petunia’s (likes more sun), Geraniums (likes both sun and shade) and Impatience (likes mostly shade). And of course we complete all the flower pots with Marigolds!

Celebrated on the 2nd Sunday of every May the mother of all holidays reminds us not only of the love and sacrifices made by our own matriarchs, but also of the perseverance demonstrated by women throughout the years. On May 13th the United States celebrated our tradition of Mother’s Day and around the world the celebration will continue on different days throughout the year. The origins of this holiday as we know it dates back much further than any card or candy company and may never have become a holiday without the love of one dedicated daughter.

The history of the celebration of mothers can be traced back in time as far as the ancient Greeks and Romans.

These people held festivals honoring the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele. In years to come the early Christian festival known as “Mothering Sunday” was created as a time when the faithful would return to their “mother church” for a special service. Later still an abolitionist and suffragette named Julia Ward Howe gave calls to action for mothers to unite for world peace. This most recent event is what led up to the modern Mother’s Day we celebrate in the U.S. Following her mother’s 1905 death, Anna Jarvis conceived of Mother’s Day as a way of honoring the sacrifices mothers made for their children. Jarvis’ mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, was a well-known activist who helped start “Mothers’ Day Work Clubs” in the years before the civil war as well as “Mothers’ Friendship Day.” This labor of love by Anna began in 1908 and was brought to fruition with the assistance of a Philadelphia department store owner, John Wanamaker, who financially backed the cause. Their dedication and passion paid off when, in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson officially established the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. Unfortunately the commercialization of Mother’s Day was not what Anna Jarvis had in mind for the day she envisioned as one of celebration between mothers and families. By the year 1920 Anna even urged people to stop buying flowers, cards and candies for Mother’s Day. The spirit of a holiday, even Mother’s Day, can be easily overlooked in the wake of shopping sprees and brunch reservations, but let’s not forget at the center of all of the arrangements is our pretty amazing moms. They deserve even more than a day of foot rubs, a few mimosas or a phone call (although those are surely welcome).

The spirit of banding together to celebrate what strong women have done for our families is what this special day is all about. Let’s all take more than one Sunday a year to celebrate what strong moms have done for our families and us. Mom won’t argue with a few extra nights off from chores either.

By now you are probably familiar with the Escape Room craze that has been sweeping the nation. What’s that? You aren’t? Well, you are in for a treat! If you’ve played an escape room before, you know the basics. Escape rooms are live action games where teams solve the mission (or escape the room) in 60 minutes or less by solving clues, puzzles and riddles placed around the room. Everyone must work as a team. Once the clues have been solved, you must find locks and open every lock before you are able to “escape”. Sound simple? You will need all of your wits and cunning to try and figure out the clues presented. Rooms range from easy to expert.

The Community Connection recently had the opportunity to try our hand at Play It Out escape room in Souderton. Play It Out is Souderton’s first escape room.

Having gone to larger escape rooms, I was eager to try what I thought would be a smaller, simpler game. Well, imagine my surprise when my team and I (which consisted of my husband, my 19 year old daughter, and her boyfriend) got locked in and the game began. We were challenged right from the start with expertly put together puzzles that made the bigger rooms we have been to seem like small potatoes!

Play It Out has elements of surprise, twists and turns that kept us hopping as a team the entire time! We booked “The Pawn Shop” and the elements and props were well done. The setting made you feel like you were right in the middle of a seedy pawn shop, with plenty of props to keep you guessing as to what was needed to move to the next riddle. For the record, we DID make it out in time! Without giving away too much detail, let me just say, we highly recommend you stop out to this local gem and see for yourself!

Play it out has two rooms to choose from, both billed as medium level. Each room holds up to 8 players, with a minimum recommended age of 13.

The cost is $24 per person, right in line with many of the bigger rooms. They also offer corporate team building programs, special events, and a mobile escape room experience! Located at 117 E. There’s nothing quite like the new blossoms and bird songs of springtime. After the winter southeastern Pennsylvania has had, it’s no wonder the feeling of cabin fever is making many of us feel like we’ve just gotta get outside. Lucky for us in the Upper Perkiomen Valley, there are lots of opportunities to enjoy our newly-found springtime freedom. Natural beauty is all around us and getting a little pep back into your step might be closer than you think. One of the many benefits of the season is it may be easier for you to get into an exercise routine in the sunny springtime.

A 2011 study found that, “compared with an indoor workout, exercising outdoors in nature increased energy levels, made people feel revitalized, and decreased tension, among other positive effects. People who worked out in the fresh air also tended to say they enjoyed the experience more and would be likely to repeat it.”1 Get out your walking shoes and take a lap around the neighborhood after work and see what effect it has on your mood and your body.

Why not also gather your whole family together and take a stroll through the scenic area of New Goshenhoppen Park (3rd St, East Greenville) or Nature Meadow (6th and State St, East Greenville)? Grab your camera and enjoy the native meadows, various species of trees, and beautiful flowers greeting springtime at Ziegler Nature Preserve (1799 Ziegler Rd, Pennsburg).

On Saturday, June 9th, your whole family can even enjoy the free outdoor event “Creek Critters” at Green Lane Park. The Montgomery County Parks, Trails & Historic Sites event calendar describes this all-ages event as using nets, pans, and magnifying containers to learn about aquatic insects and their adaptations for life in moving water. They recommend wearing old sneakers or water shoes. For this event meet at the fly-fishing area on Church Road (1.2 miles east of Kutztown Road). Health Benefits of Yard Work CARDIOVASCULAR EXERCISE One of the best benefits of doing yard work is that it is great cardiovascular exercise. It is a great way to increase oxygen flow to the heart, aids in arterial flow, reduces blood pressure and stress, and gets your heart rate going to give you quite a workout! Just be sure to keep some water on hand and stay hydrated!

INVOLVES YOUR ENTIRE BODY Yard work is not an isometric movement like lifting weights that works one or a few muscles. Yard work involves your entire body, which means you get a total body workout and develop more strength and fitness overall.

PREVENTS AGING The more active you are throughout your life, the better. Yard work is a fabulous way to stay active and helps keep aging at bay.It also involves critical thinking skills, which keeps the brain young as well.

LOWERS DEPRESSION To prevent depression as you age, it’s important to have friends, stay active and have hobbies. Consider doing more yard work. Not only does it keep you active, but because you’re out in nature, your stress hormones naturally decrease and depression tends to subside. Also, since you are outside, you’re exposed to natural sources of Vitamin D through the sunlight, which is the best form of antidepressant medicine you can get from nature. Just be sure to wear a bit of sunscreen to prevent skin cancer scares.

IMPROVES FLEXIBILITY Along with aiding an improved cardiovascular system, yard work also improves your entire sense of flexibility.

Because you’re using your whole body, the muscles and joints are fluid and moving in all types of directions, which increases your ability to prevent muscle pain, inflammation and static muscles from inactivity.

THERAPY Again, yard work is a time to be by yourself and have some time to engage in activity in nature. Since you’re bettering the way your yard looks, you’ll also get a sense of accomplishment from yard work. All these factors combined make yard work an excellent form of therapy. It isn’t just good for your yard, but also wonderful for you!

SELF TAUGHT Perhaps one of the coolest things about yard work, is many people teach themselves and actually learn by doing.

Nature just kind of has a way of showing you what to do and what needs to be done. If you need a little help getting started, check out some tutorials online as well, or just read some articles. Or, just get out in your yard and see what you can do. If nothing else, pulling weeds and watering is a great place to start!
