wheels. people. community. Hey Upper Perk! Have you heard that we have our very own community bike shop right here in East Greenville? For the past 3 years, Bike & Sol has operated out of 104 Main Street. What started out as a nonprofit community project for kids out of a small shed in the back of the property has now come full circle. Scott Roth, director and president of Bike & Sol says “We weren’t looking to build a bike shop, but people kept coming by wanting their bikes fixed. We expanded into the larger building quickly and started a full service bike shop, complete with free Celebrating Community

coffee which is supplied complimentary from local roaster Speak Easy Coffee Company in Pennsburg. From repairs, to bikes, both new and used, you can count on Bike & Sol to fit all of your cycling needs. But don’t let the nonprofit fool you. Bike & Sol has professional quality with over 20 years experience. Bike & Sol is run mainly by volunteers and overseen by Dick Fox, who has been working on bikes since he was 6 years old. They even have an earn a bike program for children. Scott explained the ccmonthly.com

program as a great way for children from 6th grade on up to learn the industry and earn a bike in the process. Sessions are 12 hour long sessions, and if the program is completed within 14 weeks, kids get to walk away with a great no cost bike that they have “earned”. Over 50 kids have gone through the program in the past 3 years. As an unpaid Volunteer, Scott loves to teach children a skill set and help the community flourish. “It’s a passion of mine to see people ride bikes and have fun as families” he says. “Our motto is wheels, people, community.” He also explained that students have the option to be invited back as an apprentice, and if a student expresses the desire to learn business and marketing, he will take those students and put them on a special track. Eight students have also been placed in different jobs after completion of the program. There is even a program for adults to volunteer and learn the industry while getting discounts on bikes and accessories! Bike & Sol also organizes community bike rides on local trails. Geared toward every level, the rides are a nodrop ride, meaning that set points are

designated for everyone to catch up before going on. 2019 will see the rolling out of even more organized trail rides for all ages, along with a continuing emphasis on helping the community. With over 200 bikes on the floor to purchase, a constantly changing inventory, a full parts selection, including the ability to order any part needed, and experts on hand to answer any question, Bike & Sol truly is your one stop bike shop! And don’t forget the coffee!

Holiday Stre -Busting Tips The most wonderful time of the year is fast approaching again! Do you have a plan in place to manage the stress that often comes along with the holiday season? One of the best ways to avoid holiday stress is to go into the season with a plan for taking care of yourself and keeping stress at bay – before it even starts – using the following tips: 1) Take a moment to ask yourself what you love most about the holidays and write it down. Next, think about what is most stressful or difficult for you. This will give you a clear sense of what to do more of (what you love most) and what to manage (what stresses you out). 2) Manage your social schedule. For some, it is easy to over-schedule social activities during the holidays to the point that you’re frazzled. Others might long for more social involvement and feel even lonelier than at other times of the year. Be sure to schedule in down-time if you usually suffer from scheduling overwhelm. If you often feel lonely over the holidays, look for opportunities to volunteer, find community activities you can attend, and reach out to others to let them know how you feel so you can be included. 3) Create a holiday budget and stick to it. This will help you avoid financial stress both during and after the holidays. Be sure to notice your beliefs around spending. If you believe that what you spend on others is important, reconsider your thinking – there are

many other ways of expressing love and caring that don’t involve spending money. 4) Take good care of yourself. It’s easy to fall out of healthy routines that we rely on to feel good – healthy eating, a consistent sleep schedule, moderate exercise. Strike a balance by sticking with your healthy routine most days and limiting indulging moderately to parties and get-togethers. 5) Find time to exercise – Try to get 30 minutes of exercise a day, and consider walking outside – being in nature and getting more sunlight are consistently proven to boost mood and energy levels, and reduce stress and anxiety. 6) Level-set your expectations – Notice your expectations of yourself and others. If you are a perfectionist, gently remind yourself that things will go wrong and that’s ok. Have difficult family members? Notice if you’re hoping they will be different, then remind yourself they probably haven’t changed. You can’t control or change them, but you can deal with them if you recognize you are in control of yourself and your response to them. 7) Don’t fall victim to the post-holiday crash – When the holidays end, lots of people feel a post-holiday funk that can be avoided by planning a few fun activities through January and February. It doesn’t have to be elaborate, just a few things on your schedule give you something to look forward to. May your holidays be stress-free this year, and may the season touch your heart!

Giving back With Thanksgiving and Christmas fast approaching some of us feel excitement for things to come, while others sense stressors weighing on their shoulders. Not just during the holidays, but all year round, The Open Link has its doors open. This local gem is ready to help the community with services for those in need as well as opportunities to give back this holiday season. “We have a lot to offer the community! The vast majority of our services are free. We get feedback from people we’ve served stating that we’ve helped improve their lives or that they couldn’t have gotten back on track without the hand up,” says Kelly Chandler, Development and Communications Manager at The Open Link. Described as “a ‘one-stop shop’ for services in the Upper Perkiomen Valley, The Open Link is a multiservice agency with a main office in Pennsburg, which is the site of their food pantry, and a senior center in East Greenville, known as The Center at The Open Link. Programs at The Open Link fall into three tiers: Community Services: “We have an awesome job coach who helps people with finding their skill sets, assists them with their resumes and electronic job applications, as well as posting their resumes online, interview prep and connecting people with local employers,” advises Chandler. In addition to employment counseling and assistance this tier also holds information and referrals (linking people and services), financial counseling and assistance and annual service programs. These beneficial programs include the Back-to-School supply drive, Thanksgiving meals and Christmas gifts for children of income-eligible families. Domestic violence

support (including court accompaniment, safety planning, and counseling), the Upper Perk Domestic Violence Task Force, and the Transportation Assistance program (where individuals are driven to and from medical appointments), are additional services available. Food and Nutrition: “The Community Food Pantry is one of the biggest programs we offer the community and it’s been growing in recent months.” Chandler says. “The pantry, a choice program where local families in need can get food and other basic necessities like baby formula and diapers, toiletries and cleaning supplies, has gone digital. Instead of the previous system where individuals physically shopped in the pantry, we recently launched the use of a new software system, “SmartChoice,” which allows the individual to use a computer kiosk to ‘shop’ from a live inventory of the pantry.” At the Food Pantry individuals are given a certain amount of points to spend each month based on the size of their household. Nutritious opens like fruit and vegetable use up less points, which allows shoppers to stock up on healthy foods and still have room for other treats they enjoy. “Clients then are called to pick up their bagged groceries after a volunteer fills their order,” explains Chandler. “It saves time for the clients. The exciting prospect is that we will be expanding this program to local lower-income senior communities, like the Upper Perk Manor and the Red Hill Villas, so seniors who can’t physically get to the food pantry can now benefit from this resource as well.”The Open Link plans to deliver orders to those communities in the coming months, which will be very welcome for those with trouble traveling when the snow rolls in.

“The ultimate goal is to open this program to all ages and to have pickup sites around the community to reach people who, for various reasons, can’t get to the food pantry or don’t want the stigma of being seen getting help with food,” says Chandler. A community staple, Meals on Wheels provides nutritious meals to homebound seniors, which allows many to be self-sufficient and allows the ability to stay in their own homes. “We served more than 24,000 meals this past year through this program,” advises Chandler. “Each recipient gets a hot catered lunch a cold sandwich and sides for each day’s dinner.” Community Lunch is an additional program at the senior center where older adults come together for a hot balanced meal, Monday through Friday, and socialize with some new friends. Meals in this program are a $2.00 donation. Adult and Family Education: High School Equivalency (GED) education classes and testing provides local adults instruction, one-on-one tutoring, practice tests and testing to earn their high school diplomas.“Many people find that after dropping out of high school, they can’t take college courses, get better jobs, etc. without their diploma,” explains Chandler. “We have a PhD-level instructor who is genuinely invested in seeing each person succeed. We had 25 eligible graduates for a ceremony at Upper Perkiomen High School in May 2018.” The Open Link also offers health and wellness programs such as tai chi, yoga, Women on Weights, etc. at the senior center each week, along with various health seminars, art, gardening and social programs. If you would like to get involved with your community, either with a donation of your time, goods or finances, The Open Link is especially busy this time of year and thankful for your help. “Currently our greatest needs are donations and volunteers,” says Chandler. “We run a Thanksgiving meal program to ensure each person or family has a holiday meal. Aside from food donations for the pantry for Thanksgiving and Christmas, we can also really use donations for our other holiday programs. Our Christmas programs served more than 600 area children last year and that means a lot of gifts! Sadly, a lot of kids ask for needs like new shoes, clothes and coats, so

gift cards are always fantastic, but things like toys and games are also needed to ensure each child can wake up to presents on Christmas morning. Volunteers are essential to making many of our programs run. They deliver meals, they pack food in the pantry and for Meals on Wheels, they help us with administrative tasks like the front desk at the main office and the senior center, they drive clients to medical appointments and more. Our volunteers are truly one of our biggest assets and we’re always in need of more!” In addition to the Thanksgiving program The Open Link is currently taking applications for their Adopt-A-Family Christmas program. In this special program, families, organizations and businesses from the Upper Perk community volunteer to fulfill the Christmas wishes of local kids in need. This program is an excellent opportunity to start a new Christmas tradition with your family or friends. “The family’s children are ‘adopted’ and the donors purchase the gifts and return them to The Open Link,” explains Chandler. “The parent(s) then pick up the gifts and this ensures that their kids will have gifts under the tree on Christmas morning. We also have a Christmas Room program where families (who weren’t adopted or registered too late) can ‘shop’ for their kids from a large room full of clothing, toys, games and the like. They even get stocking stuffers.” Anyone who needs help for the holidays is asked to contact Counselor Laura Dzugan at 215-6794112 or laurad@theopenlink.org. “We have a very generous community and we’d love to help!” adds Chandler. Their kindhearted staff is ready to listen and pair you with a program that is best suited to your needs. If you are interested in volunteering your time, making a donation or just learning more, visit www.theopenlink.org or call 215-679-4112.

Love Upper Perk is a movement to care about our community. Love Upper Perk is based out of the Upper Perk Community Life Center. The goal is to create a site that hosts and publishes everything that is awesome in the Upper Perk Valley. Love Upper Perk works closely with boroughs, churches, non-profits, & businesses to accomplish getting the word out about what is going on in the Valley. Check us out at www.LoveUpperPerk.org.

Once a day synonymous with family gatherings and a turkey front and center, Thanksgiving has evolved over the years into a day of thanks that spans beyond travel and tryptophan. While the image of a feast followed by football and naps is still on the horizon for many of us in the Upper Perkiomen Valley, it’s not the way everyone will be celebrating this Thanksgiving. From Friendsgivings to late nights spent at work there is one spirit that should be held in all of our hearts this November 22nd: being thankful for what we have and being willing to share it with others. The ladder part of that sentiment is often lost in the shuffle of dinner clean up and Black Friday wish lists. Although reflecting on our blessings is often on our hearts the closer Turkey Day comes, the willingness to share with others should be just as active in our minds. Some people we pass day to day might really need a smile shared their way. For others, perhaps a little extra tip to the server when we go out to eat or paying it forward to the next customer in the line at the drive-thru. As the saying goes, everyone is fighting an internal battle you know nothing about. A little extra kindness goes a long way and that’s something everyone can use more of. Think of the cashier at the grocery store where you’ll be buying the makings for your Thanksgiving feast (or your gifts on Black Friday). Many of them have been working more hours than usual and have had a much busier and more stressful shifts. Take time Celebrating Community

to thank them for the hard work they do, you never know how your extra consideration could help them through the next cranky customer in line. Likewise, if you have the means to do so, perhaps put give $5 or $10 towards the groceries of the person behind you at the check out. A chain reaction of giving could start with one little gesture of love from you! Many unsung heroes of the holidays are the people who spend the days and nights working, such as hospital employees and first responders. Sending a card of thanks for their hard work is sure to stand out to them as they’re taking time to be away from their families in order to keep yours safe. If you don’t have plans on Thanksgiving perhaps drop off your card or some homemade treats in person to someone who’s made an impact on your life this year. It doesn’t have to take much time or money to say thank you, but it surely will make an impression on someone who might not get a lot of “thank you’s” throughout the year. Have any of the suggestions here inspired you to give an extra act of kindness this Thanksgiving season? We’d love to hear about it on the Love Upper Perk Facebook page. We’d also like to give a big Thank You to all of our readers and those whose generous donations help keep Love Upper Perk going strong. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

DiNg, Service Please!

by: Molasses Creek

Housebreaking a dog can be a huge challenge. Frequently dogs won’t let you know that they have to go. It was always kind of eerie, but I knew when my girl Shadow had to go potty. It always became super quiet, then I would find her just standing at the front door. I think she was willing me with brainwaves for me to open the door for her. Maybe she thought that standing there long enough, somebody might notice that there was an eighty-five pound Black Lab with her paws crossed. Sometimes I wondered how long she was there before I noticed her. Hey, I’m human! So how do we get the dogs to tell us they have to go potty? One of the easiest ways to teach your dog to let you know that she has to go potty is to stand by the door and act like a goofball! The idea is

to jazz up your pup. You stand by the door jump up and down or hop from one foot to the other foot while clapping your hands as you excitedly ask your dog “who wants to go potty?” Do this every time before you take your dog out for potty. Now if you notice your dog jumping around at the door or even barking at the door, she’s letting you know she has to relive herself. Take her out on a leash even if you have a fenced-in back yard. Don’t fall into the trap of I-really-only-wanted-to-go-out-and-play. The idea is when the dog does go potty you take her for a walk or let her off the leash to go play. These are huge, real-life reinforcing rewards for your dog. You can teach your dog how to ring a bell or push a button for potty service. Make your own potty bell by using any bell (loud enough to hear from another room) tied to a ribbon then hang it from your door handle. It should be about nose high. You use a push button toy that’s says “I gotta go” when pushed. It also comes with instructions. You can even use a concierge bell. Clicker training is one of the quickest and easiest ways to teach your dog how to use any of these tools (to find a great dog trainer go to CCPDT.org). It took me about two days to teach my Ziva to - Ding, service please!
