Who doesn’t love a good dog story? And family owned Bark Ave Pet Supplies in Harleysville is a great one! Run by husband and wife Frank and Debbie, daughter Tiffany, along with some part time assistance from other daughter Kristina, this pet shop tucked into the strip mall at the Landis shopping center is full of surprises. September marks the 11th anniversary of this quaint little store, packed full of everything you need for your pet and then some, including a recently re-opened dog grooming area, along with two self serve dog grooming stations. When asked, why a pet store, Debbie was quick to answer. “It’s our passion” she stated. “We love animals, our daughters love animals, and when

the opportunity came to turn our dream into a reality, we hoped and prayed that people felt the same way about their pets as we did. “ And it turns out they did. After 11 years, the Spiers have a recipe for success. Deb finds her niche is helping customers with their pet’s diets. “We want to make sure you are getting what will work with your pet. We offer personalized service, plenty of samples, and if something doesn’t work, we make sure we find something that does” she states. They also offer a frequent buyer food program. Dogs are welcome to “shop” around, and find a favorite toy, or sniff out a treat. One of the highlights is their large selection of elk antlers from Wyoming.

Each year, Frank and daughter Kristina take a road trip out to the National Elf Refuge in Jackson Hole to purchase naturally shed elf antlers, foraged by boy scouts. 75% of the proceeds from the purchase of the antlers are donated to be used for long term habitat improvement projects at the National Elf Refuge. Frank then brings them back to the store and cuts them into various sizes, marketed as a natural dog chew. Bark Ave prides themselves on natural products, made in the USA.”We wouldn’t sell you anything that we wouldn’t use with our own pets” says Deb. And the Spiers know a thing or two about pets. Before Bark Ave, they bred Cocker Spaniels. Deb and Frank now own a boxer rescue, Arabelle. Tiffany fell in love with schitzus. She currently owns three, Willy, Jersey and Godiva, that help out in the store on occasion. Daughter Kristina, who works in the pet food industry, has a Boston terrier named Piper and 2 cats.

Later in the year, Frank, whose hobbies include woodworking, will be making dog diners. Photos with Santa and The Easter Bunny, summer pet parades, and the upcoming 11th anniversary celebration are just a few of the many events held throughout the year. “We have a lot of regulars”, says Deb. Customers are usually surprised to find out that Bark Ave’s prices are very competitive and many times lower than the big box stores. Taking a Look at

Skippack Architecture Indenhofen Farm LOCATED IN EVANSBURG STATE PARK As we put together a history of this old house and learn about the people who lived there, we also become aware of the history of the Skippack Village. German immigrants Gerhard Indenhofen and his brother Herman built this house around 1725. Gerhard was 19 years old when the boys purchased 440 acres from Mathias Van Bebber in 1706. The original deed (Phila. Book E3 6:40, 24, Oct. 1706, 440ac., 88 ÂŁ-s) indicates that this encompassed the whole village of Skippack. The stone was carried from quarries along the Skippack Creek a little south of the house. The mortar was a simple mixture of Skippack red clay and lime held together by horse hair and rope and sometimes straw. Looking at the inside of the house, these rudimentary ingredients seem to be doing a decent job of holding the stones in place even today. Gerhard IndenHofen was born in 1687 in Mulheim, Germany on the Ruhr River. 1 Mulheim is located in northwest Germany Celebrating Pets

near the border of Holland. Research indicates that this is the area of the old world that many of our early Skippack settlers come from. Gerhard arrived in America with his father (Eberhardt) and mother (Elizabeth nee’ Schipboucher), two brothers (Peter and Harman) and a sister (Anneke) sometime in 1698. 2 Based on primary church records, the IndenHofens settled in Whitemarsh (Wide Marsh), Pennsylvania. 3 On October 8, 1706, Gerhard and his brother Herman bought 440 acres in Skippack from Mennonite Mathias Van Bebber for a consideration that is not mentioned in the deed. 4 The brothers separated on May 2, 1723, Gerhard kept the property in Skippack and Herman moved to Lower Providence. 5 The house was built circa 1725 and bears resemblance to a few of the other early houses along the Skippack Creek in the stonework signature. In 1736 Gerhard had a grist mill built on the property that he rented to Felix Good. In 1743, he applied for a license to keep a “public house” and also let the house be used as the Skippack Reformed Church for Sunday morning meetings. In 1746, Gerhard died from an apparent flu epidemic and the house went to the oldest living mail grandchild, 9 year old Peter Keiter. 6 In 1783, Peter Keiter put an addition on to the house, almost doubling its size and that’s the way it looks from the outside today. The house has had 17 owners in

the past 270 years and these occupants made little effort to remodel or change the structure. General George Washington and his 10,000 continentals marched past in 1777 to camp along the Skippack Creek and probably gazed upon this stone house only it was about half this size.

School season begins, fall weather nears, hats and gloves and scarves reappear for another year. Flu season seems to have its own time of year, beginning in September and lasting through to the next summer. The flu is contagious. It is a respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus, a different virus than the one that causes colds. It may be difficult at first to tell whether you have a cold or the flu. Cold symptoms come on gradually, and although you might be slightly achy, you probably won’t have a fever or chills. Sneezing with a stuffy nose and sore throat are common, and you might be tired as well. You might have a little cough as well. If you have the flu you should expect aches and a fever to show up quickly. You will probably have chills and feel very weak. Coughs, headaches and chest discomfort accompany the flu as well. Sneezing, sore throats and stuffy noses are not as common, but can happen.

According to the CDC, the most important step in flu prevention is a yearly flu vaccination. The vaccine is especially important for health care workers, young children and pregnant women. Those with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes, heart conditions or lung disease are also at risk. If you live with or care for a high risk person, you are also at risk and should receive the vaccine. Also remember to stay away from sick people if possible. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If you are sick, stay away from healthy people for at least 24 hours after your fever goes away. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue if you cough or sneeze, and toss the tissue in the trash afterwards. Try to keep your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth. And disinfect surfaces that may be contaminated with the flu virus. Antiviral drugs can lessen flu symptoms by 1 or 2 days, and can prevent serious complications from occurring. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns before flu season starts!

If you have never pampered yourself with a bar of handmade soap, then look no further than Rina Rose Handcrafted Soap at 4039 Skippack Pike in Skippack. Owner Sabrina Miller was quick to let us know that handmade soap is an affordable luxury that everyone should experience. Strugging to make ends meet after being thrust into the role of a single mom back in 2015, daughter Meredith wanted to come up with a plan to make extra money and help her mom out. They searched for a way to not only make some extra money, but to have fun together in the process. They kicked around a few ideas, from homemade baked goods to chocolate treats, but when they started researching soaps, the mother daughter pair knew that they were onto something. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s when Rina Rose Handcrafted Soap was born.

They started selling at flea markets and craft festivals, but quickly discovered that the delicate soaps were getting damaged in the packing and unpacking process traveling from show to show. They decided to open a small shop in Skippack, knowing that it was the perfect place for their wares. Rina Rose Handcrafted Soap opened its doors on June 1st, in the home of the former Irish Shop. ccmonthly.com

Sabrina and daughter Meredith make most of the many products they sell home at their kitchen table. In addition to the soaps, bath salts and lotions the duo make, Rina Rose Handcrafted Soaps also carries other body essentials such as body butters, body scrubs, bath bombs, lip balms, and much more. The store also sells natural loofah sponges, sea sponges, candles, and handmade jewelry as well, all made by local or small business crafters.

Couple that with mugs, purses, home decor and make up bags, and a unique shopping experience is guaranteed! A full time operating room nurse at a top trauma hospital by trade, Miller works night shift, sleeps for a few hours then comes in to open the shop, and stock the shelves with the unique and fragrant bath products. “I love being able to create with my daughter.” Even her 5 year old son Alex likes to help out in the store. Bringing her family together is important to Miller. “I’m at peace when I am here. The smells and the tranquility are refreshing after a stressful shift in the O.R.”, says Miller.

When you walk into The Bee & The Bear, you are instantly taken back 150 years. The shop is located in an old general store built in 1860, which has had many permutations over the years, including the Hereford Post Office, a general store museum and a bakery. The original shelving, wood floors and stone walls remain. The store cabinets are always stocked full of woolens, threads, yarns, buttons, ribbons and other items for creating. The Bee & The Bear specializes in rug hooking, punch needle, needlework and wool applique. Rug hooking is an old technique that uses wool strips and a hook to create rugs. Punch needle is much the same, but uses yarn or cotton floss and a smaller needle. Classes are offered in all of these skills. You don’t need to be crafty to shop at The Bee & The Bear. There are plenty of

finished items for your home or for gifts. Additionally, there is a great selection of vintage items, antiques, Rifle Paper Co. stationary, handmade items, locally roasted coffee, and soaps. Being one of the few rug-hooking shops on the East Coast, the store has enjoyed customers from as far as Maine, North Carolina, Maryland, Virginia and one from Chile! The owner, Katie Kriner, comes from a family of sewers, quilters and makers. Her paternal great-grandmother quilted until she was 100 years old. Her maternal grandmother was also an avid quilter and sewer. Katie’s mom taught her how to sew during snow days in middle school and encouraged a love for crafting. When Katie moved to Hereford Township, she discovered the store Homespun, the predecessor to The Bee & The Bear. She learned how to rug hook and punch needle under the teaching of Homespun’s owner, Kay Leisey.

When Katie purchased the business in 2017, she was able to fulfill her dream of owning a creative outlet. Her entrepreneurial interest started during an MBA class at Lehigh University. It was through this class that she submitted and received an honorable mention award for a business venture idea. Much of her business training is put to use on a regular basis. Katie is very active in her shop in other ways too – designing and creating many of the projects for sale. Additionally, she teaches classes and also brings in expert teachers in rug hooking and punch needle. The business is named after Katie and her husband’s two German shepherds, Zell & Bruenni. Zell passed away suddenly in the summer of 2016 from cancer at just 5

Stu Strauss, owner of Daniel’s Lawn & Garden Center in Harleysville, feels a little differently. He has been working since 1987 to change the minds of the Upper Perkiomen Valley and surrounding areas.

At chain stores they give you a cart and tell you to ‘do your own thing.’ At Daniel’s we carry it out to your car for you.”

The passion for exceeding expectations radiated as I walked through Daniel’s spacious indoor and outdoor areas. Greeted with cheerful bright flowers, shining grills ready to be christened with juicy burgers, luxurious patio sets, and the soothing bubble and glow of hot tubs, I was quickly dreaming about how to fit everything onto my townhome’s deck. Strauss says that the hot tubs are an especially ‘hot’ item. “One of the best things you can get is a hot tub. They don’t cost that much to run as far as maintenance and energy efficiency. You can get 12 months of fun out of a hot tub. As busy as people are, sometimes they’ve gotta take time for themselves.” With prices ranging from $4,000 and up, financing offered and the tubs fully guaranteed, it’s hard not to envision the change one would make in your life!

The roadside stand overﬂows with fresh picked produce

There’s something very endearing about Freed’s roadside produce stand. The iconic green and white striped cover, the colorful produce and fresh picked flowers , and the dented metal honor box all take you back to a simpler time. That time may just be 1921. That’s the year that Russell and Annie Freed bought the 28 acre farm on Morwood Road in Harleysville when they were just 20 and 21 years old. I met Nancy Freed Welby, third generation farmer, on a recent outing to pick some flowers. Her friendly nature and outgoing demeanor was so refreshing that I found myself deep in a conversation with her for over an hour! She was happy to give my assistant Fran and myself a tour of the beautiful property. We set out on her trusty golf cart and away we went. It was easy to see right away the passion Nancy has for the farm, handed down through the generations, from her grandparents, to her parents, Robert and Valeria Freed, to herself and husband Jamie. The little farm stand has been providing the Harleysville area with the freshest produce for over 20 years. Nancy explained that her father first planted pumpkins for the kids for fun. The kids decided to sell them, and Freed’s produce stand was born. These days, Nancy and her husband work the farm, along with part-time help from sons Ryan and Grant. All of the farming is done by hand. “I planted 3000 candy onions by hand,” laughs Nancy. “Who does that?” All of the rows of produce are perfectly organized and tagged with plant date and species.

Pumpkins, tomatoes, several varieties of eggplant, cucumber, zucchinis, watermelons and cantaloupe. And the list goes on and on. But the corn. Oh the corn! Nancy picked some fresh from the field during our tour, and I must confess, I am a corn snob. I was anxious to go home and try it and it didn’t disappoint. I would later go on to brag to my friends that I just ate the best corn of my life and promptly directed everyone I know to go pick up a dozen. A small flash of panic crept up when I wondered if I was going to give away the secret of where the best corn was to be had, but it was honestly too good not to share. As our tour continued, we passed through more rows of vegetables. Nancy proudly looked over the land and proclaimed.. “It’s like a field of dreams!” Each row of vegetables was capped off with a yellow variety. “I like to color coordinate everything “said Nancy. “It’s just something fun that I do”. Fun for sure. As Nancy explained the process of planting and picking to us, her passion was contagious. I soon found myself taking enough

photos to fill 3 magazines, and biting into fresh picked red peppers! As the tour concluded, we noticed some huge cornstalks unlike the others. Nancy explained that was corn grown specifically for Fall decorating. The variety is taller with much more stalk than “eating corn”. In fact, Nancy’s father came up with a method to grow them later in the year, so when they are harvested they are still green, and less likely to crumble and disintegrate in your car or the feisty fall rainstorms. Visit Freeds produce stand today for the best variety and freshest vegetables and you-cut flowers around. And be sure to visit them for all your Fall decorating needs. But save some corn for me!
