Your secret saboteurs - FREE E-GUIDE How many times have you tried to lose weight only to either give up or put it all back on again? I see this so often with slimmers and they usually end up feeling like failures! Our behaviours are so complex that it’s not as easy as just eating less or moving more. In order to have a healthy attitude towards our body, we need to change what our minds think about our feelings and behaviours. I have worked as a weight management counsellor for 10 years and 4 years ago, I founded the SMLDiet. The SMLDiet is a meal replacement plan based on the industrial estate in Buckingham. We help slimmers across the UK & Europe to lose weight using our meal replacements BUT I think when it comes to our weight loss, we need more than just meal replacements. We need an attitude & lifestyle change. Late last year, I tucked myself away in my office & started to write e-guides for our slimmers. Many of our e-guides look at subject matters such as emotional eating, changing your thinking and loving your body & now I am offering all slimmers a free e-guide. Our latest e-guide is called ‘Your Secret Saboteurs’ & this e-guide is focusing on (yup you guessed it) sabotage. Sabotage is so common with slimmers. When we think of sabotage we usually think of self sabotage but it comes in so many different forms. There’s our own self sabotage and sabotage from others. Sabotage is what will stop us from reaching our goals, sabotage is what we do when we are scared or lack belief in ourselves. Sabotage is the dream monster that will stop you in your tracks. If you would like to get your free copy of our e-guide, simply head on over to www.thesmldiet.com & you’ll find your free e-guide under the ‘free resources’ section of our Support toolbar. Work begins on the Extension and Alterations to Calvert Green Village Hall Building work is now underway to create new and improved Village Hall facilities for the whole Community following a Turf Cutting Ceremony. AJ Design & Build of Northants have been appointed as Main Contractor to deliver the works, and the Village Hall is now closed, as the Project gets underway. The Project which is being part funded by a generous £50,000 grant from WREN’s FCC Community Action Fund will provide fit-out of the extension including a Bar, Kitchen and WC facilities once it is opened later this Summer. A grant of £200,000 has also been obtained from AVDC’s New Homes Bonus, without which the Hall Development works could not have proceeded, providing necessary funds to deliver a fabulous new facility to meet the Community needs now and in the future. Cllr Marie Swan of Calvert Green Parish Council is excited that the project is starting to take shape. She says ‘It is great to see our vision for this vital community facility moving closer to reality. We are extremely grateful for the funding WREN and NHB have given us and we’re looking forward to opening to the Community later this Year.’ For further press information please contact parishclerkcalvertgreen@gmail.com or visit our website www. CalvertGreenParish.co.uk The project received a grant from the Aylesbury Vale District Council’s New Homes Bonus Funding Scheme. If you would like more information about the grants available, please call the Grants Officer, Jan Roffe, on 01296 585 186 or e mail jroffe@aylesburyvalerdc.gov.uk Joe Newby, WREN Grant Manager for Buckinghamshire, said “Good quality facilities, which are accessible to all, are vital for community well-being. This project will look to provide a fully updated facility where people of all ages can come together and take part in a range of activities. We are delighted to be able to support such a worthwhile project and are really looking forward to the outcome”. WREN is a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community projects from funds donated by FCC Environment through the Landfill Communities Fund. Since 1998, WREN has granted over £200m to more than 7,000 projects which benefit people living within 10 miles of a FCC Environment landfill site. For more information please visit www.wren.org.uk

Beautiful Budapest

This past month Neil has travelled to the breathtaking city of Budapest. Bare in mind that he was on his friend, Matt Butler’s stag do, and as a result didn’t really see too much of the culture apart from that of Heroes’ Square and the abandoned courtyards turned boozing hotspots, the ruin pubs! The price of a pint of beer can be as little as 82p, so it is fair to say they all had a very good time! I on the other hand would love to visit Budapest, soak up the culture and take a visit to one of the Thermal Spas!

There are a million ways to explore Budapest: on foot, by bus, tram and underground, on water, by bike or even by an amphibious vehicle! All the travel guides say to start exploring Budapest with the magnificent Buda Castle and Castle District. You won’t need hiking boots to

10

climb Gellért Hill to enjoy breathtaking, UNESCO World Heritage, views of the city from the Citadel. Cross the river for the most grandiose building on the Pest embankment, the Parliament. For sacred wonders, visit the tallest building in the city, Saint Stephen’s Basilica, and one of the largest synagogues in the world, the Dohány Street Synagogue. Heroes’ Square will give you a peek into the romantic past of the country, and in Memento Park you’ll have a chance to enjoy a modern history lesson in the open. For a bit of romancing, stroll along the Danube promenade or head to leafy Margaret Island. You can even walk along a street that’s part of the World Heritage in its entirety. Andrássy Avenue is lined with shady streets, bike routes and amazingly beautiful buildings. You might even be able to hear music flowing from the open windows of the magnificent Opera House. When you’re done with the must-sees, leave the main streets behind, and let the city unfold its secrets. Plenty of design

The Buckingham Charity Football competition reaches its finale of 2016-17 season with the final of the Senior Cup on Bank Holiday Monday 1st May. This annual football competition dates from 1927 and was originally known as the Buckingham Hospital Cup. After a break due to the War, the Hospital Cup lost its original name with the advent of the National Health Service and became the Buckingham Charity Cup. Funds were then raised for a variety of charities, not just the local cottage hospital. Today, competing clubs are drawn not only from Buckinghamshire but also from Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire with the aim to raise funds for charitable and philanthropic organisations and currently generates over £3,000 per season. Each club is given the opportunity to nominate a charity, whether local or national, to benefit from the monies raised which comes from club entry fees, gate receipts and raffles. This year’s nominated charities have included Willen Hospice, Buckingham Hospital League of Friends, Medical Detection Dogs and St Johns Ambulance. In 1932 it was decided to run a Junior Cup Competition for the smaller villages in the area, the first winners being Steeple Claydon. Quainton also won this trophy, three times in-a-row, in 1935, 1936 and 1937, thus becoming one of only a handful of Clubs to win both Cups - the others being Hanslope, Steeple Claydon and Winslow United. This season’s Junior cup consisted of 15 teams and as usual each playing under floodlights at a neutral venue. The Junior Cup final will be competed for between last year’s winners, Great Horwood against Silverstone, both of the North Bucks & District Football League. The competition concludes with the Senior Cup final on May Day bank holiday Monday between Olney Town of the United Counties League and either Grendon Rangers or Winslow United who at time of print are yet to play their two legged semi-final. Olney reached the final with an astonishing 18-6 aggregate win over United MK. The final takes place at Stratford Fields with kind permission of Buckingham Athletic FC.

Easter Facts 1. Every child in the UK receives an average of 8.8 Easter eggs every year – double their recommended calorie intake for a whole week! 2. The largest ever Easter egg hunt was in Florida, where 9,753 children searched for 501,000 eggs. 3. With all those eggs and other chocolate treats for family, relatives, loved ones and friends, it should be no surprise that households spend an average of £75 on Easter each year. 4. The world’s most popular eggshaped chocolate is Cadbury’s Creme Egg. Workers at Cadbury in Birmingham produce 1.5 million of these every day. 5. The White House hosts an Easter Egg Roll on the front lawn each year. This tradition was started by President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1878.

IN YOUR GARDEN

Topical advice from Buckingham Garden Centre’s, Chris Day

A late Easter means there are plenty of jobs to be getting on with in the garden, but don’t neglect those essential vegetable sowings, seasonal plantings to provide spring colour in our plots.

H

ARDEN OFF your half-hardy bedding plants by leaving them outside for the day and bringing them under cover at night from May onwards. Do this for 7-10 days before planting out into beds, containers and hanging baskets. You can start to feed your container plants with a fertiliser such as Phostrogen and continue every two to four weeks throughout the summer. Alternatively use a slow-release fertiliser such as Osmocote.

S

OW Beetroot, Salad Rocket, Lettuce such as ‘Lollo Rosso’, Runner and French Beans, another sowing of broad beans (pictured) such as the variety ‘Stereo’ and small round rooted Carrots such as ‘Paris Market’. Now is a good time to forward plan your winter crops so consider sowing Purple Sprouting Broccoli, Kale and Brussels Sprouts as space becomes available. The key to a well-planned vegetable plot is continuity, so short rows sown frequently of fast-developing crops such as Lettuce, Radish, Spring Onions and Rocket, will reap delicious rewards. Once the risk of frost has passed it is safe to plant out all your summer bedding plants into borders, containers and hanging baskets.

B

ULBS Lift and divide clumps of Snowdrops (pictured) and Bluebells once the leaves start to yellow. There is still time to plant Dahlia tubers directly into the soil where you want them to flower. Prepare the soil where you are planting by working in some compost and Blood, Fish & Bone fertiliser. Set the tuber just below soil level and keep the area well-watered until you see the young shoots forming. Do provide some slug control and stake taller growing varieties if necessary.

L

AWNS Mow lawns weekly and continue adding clippings to the compost heap. The secret is to add small amounts to your compost heap otherwise they can become slimy. Keep the lawn edges trimmed using a half-moon edging iron, or a spade, to create a 7.5cm (3in) gutter around the lawn edge. This will prevent grass from creeping into the border from the main lawn. If you haven’t already fed the lawn, you can apply a high nitrogen summer lawn fertiliser to encourage a healthylooking lawn, taking care to avoid any runoff. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. Sowing

26

Please mention Community Contact when responding to adverts

new lawns or over-seeding dead patches can still be carried out in early May. Prepare the ground for sowing, by cultivating, levelling and lightly firming beforehand. Do not walk over or mow newly sown grass until it has reached a height of 5-7.5cm (2-3in), and then only give it a light trim at the highest setting. Ensure new lawns (either from turf or seed) do not dry out during dry spells. Keep off them for as long as possible to allow establishment. Don’t worry over a flush of weed seedlings in newly seeded turf as these will disappear once regular mowing begins. If moss is a problem, choose a combined fertiliser and mosskiller when feeding the lawn. Again, if weeds are a problem in an established lawn opt for a combined weed, feed and mosskiller such as Evergreen 4-in-1.

P

RUNE spring-flowering shrubs such as Honeysuckle ‘Winter Beauty’ and Forsythia after flowering has finished. The same pruning rule applies to Clematis Montana varieties (pictured). These flower on wood produced last summer, so cutting plants back directly after flowering not only keeps the plants in shape it also encourages plenty of new flowering wood. Don’t forget to encourage balanced growth after pruning by applying a fertiliser such as Vitax Q4. Do this in May and again in July to encourage flowering wood for next spring.

C

ROPS Put netting around your Strawberry plants, Raspberry canes and other soft fruit bushes to prevent birds from eating your crop. In the greenhouse, start setting out your Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Aubergines and Peppers into pots or cropping bags. Good Friday is traditionally the start of the potato planting season for first and second early varieties. The traditional way is to dig a narrow trench 12cm (5in) deep. This can be lined with compost or even grass clippings for a better crop. The seed tubers are spaced 30cm (12in) apart for earlies and 37cm (15in) for maincrop varieties in rows 60cm (24in) apart for earlies and 75cm (30in) apart for maincrop. Sprinkle slug pellets or other slug deterrents between the tubers as keel slugs can be a problem. Remember Potatoes need a sunny site away from frost pockets as the newly emerging foliage is susceptible to frost damage.

F

RUIT Keep any newly planted fruit trees and soft fruit bushes well-watered in hot weather. If you haven’t already done so, mulch around the base of the plants to help conserve moisture using composted bark. Remove any blossom or fruits during the first year to focus the plant’s energy on root growth. You can start to prune Apricot, Cherry, Damson, Gage, Peach, Plum and Nectarine trees from late May until August, so avoiding infection with the fungal disease ‘silver leaf’.

M

UST-DO’S You can start planting up your hanging baskets, windowboxes and pots with seasonal colour (bedding plants). You’ll need to watch the weather and be prepared to fleece over your pots and pop your baskets into a frost-free greenhouse, porch or shed if the nights turn chilly. Re-vamp herb borders and pots with some of the more tender plants such as Dill, Basil and Coriander as plants become available. This year Buckingham Garden Centre is supporting the Charity Thrive and we are donating 10p from every herb plant purchased throughout this year to this worthy charity.

P

ONDS Feed large aquatic plants (if their growth or flowering last year indicated they need it) by inserting special aquatic slow-release fertiliser tablets well below soil level around the base of the plant. Waterlilies are big feeders, so feed any plants not being divided. Continue dividing or cutting back marginal and bog garden plants if overcrowded. Divide and replant waterlilies once they show signs of growth using aquatic compost and special aquatic baskets. Begin stocking ponds with fish once new plantings have established – ask members of our Aquatics department for advice on this.

THE LARDER BOURTON ROAD Open Air Foods joined forces with Bourton Farmed Foods @ The Larder, Bourton Road in November 2016. In a beautiful setting on a working farm (and minutes from the centre of Buckingham town), it is a perfect platform to showcase our fabulous range of cheese, olives, chutneys and other deli & seasonal goods. In conjunction with Bourton Farmed Foods, we are aiming to offer sustainable, local produce that offer a delicious yet affordable alternative to the supermarkets. Open Air Foods opens every Friday and Saturday at Manor Farm, Bourton Road, Buckingham, MK18 7DS. You can also find us at the following markets: Brackley Market (Friday); Odells Yard, Stony Stratford (Saturday) and this summer the Buckinghamshire Young Farmers. We also have a pop up cafe at Evenley Woods every Saturday and Sunday until May serving delicious coffee, cakes and lunch time treats.

Bourton Farmed Foods The Verey family have been farming at Manor Farm, Bourton for 4 generations. A traditional mixed farming system consisting of cattle, sheep, arable and of the past 2 years, pigs. Lambing time begins in March when the sheep are bought in at night to be kept a close eye on and let out in the day in warm spring sunshine. The lambs are fattened on grass and will be sold as spring lamb from May onwards. Some we keep till a year old to be sold as hoggit meat. Silaging and hay making take up the summer months for fodder to feed the cattle throughout the winter time. Barley corn is grown and harvested on the farm, then stored and used to feed the animals at certain times of the year. 2 breeding sows Lois & Leslie, have started to produce piglets this year to supply the new venture of our on-farm butchery and cafe. With our farm-to-fork ethos we use the pigs and sheep from the farm to produce the meats. Then in a unit set up last year we make our own sausages and bacon to be sold along side cuts of pork and lamb. The cafe is supplied with our own farmed meats to showcase the quality of our produce and giving our customers a true farm-to-fork experience.

The Twyford Pantry Food has been on my mind more than normal recently as we’ve been planning

hope those of you who have made your sacrifices for Lent have managed to

what to have for our wedding breakfast in December, yes Leo has popped the question so it’s been a busy time with all the plans underway. I’m sure the year will fly by which is exciting and frightening all at once!

keep it up so far, not long to go now. Everyone deserves a treat now and then so I’ve got an Easy Roast Lamb Recipe, some Rocky Road Bars for the kids and a naughty but wonderful Mini Egg Martini recipe, cheers and enjoy!

Easter will be upon us in no time and I

Love Tina x

Easy Roast Lamb (Serves 8)

Ingredients 2 kg leg of lamb 1 bulb of garlic ½ a bunch of fresh rosemary 1.5 kg potatoes 1 lemon olive oil

gas 6 and place a roasting dish for the potatoes on the bottom. Break the garlic bulb up into cloves, then peel 3, leaving the rest whole. Pick and roughly chop half the rosemary leaves. Peel and halve the potatoes. Crush the peeled garlic into a bowl, add the chopped rosemary, finely grate in the lemon zest and drizzle in a good lug of oil, then mix together. Season the lamb with sea salt and black pepper, then drizzle with the marinade and rub all over the meat. Place on the hot bars of the oven above the tray. Parboil the potatoes in a pan of boiling salted water for 10 minutes, then drain and allow to steam dry. Gently toss the potatoes in the colander to scuff up the edges, then tip back into the pan. Add the remaining rosemary sprigs and whole garlic cloves to the potatoes, season with salt and pepper, then drizzle over a good lug of oil. Tip the potatoes into the hot tray and place back under the lamb to catch all the lovely juices. Cook the lamb for 1 hour 15 minutes if you want it pink, or 1 hour 30 minutes if you like it more well done.

When the lamb is cooked to your liking, remove from the oven and leave to rest for 15 minutes or so. Carve and serve with the roast potatoes, mint Method... Remove the lamb from the fridge 1 hour before sauce and some seasonal greens you want to cook it, to let it come up to room temperature. Preheat the oven to 200ºC/400ºC/ Source: Jamie Oliver.com

Mini Egg Martini (Serves 1)

2 tbsp cocoa powder 2 tbsp golden syrup 100g rich tea biscuits 50g mini marshmallows 50g dried cranberries 200g chocolate mini eggs Method... Line a 20 x 30cm traybake tin with 2 sheets of cling film (in a criss-cross pattern). Put the chocolate and butter in a large bowl set over a saucepan of gently simmering water, and melt until smooth and glossy.

Ingredients 25g mini eggs 1 tsp honey 25ml crème de cacao 25ml Baileys 50ml vodka ice Method... Crush the mini eggs in a pestle and mortar then tip onto a small plate. Brush the rim of a Martini glass with a little of the honey using a pastry brush then dip the glass into the crushed mini eggs to stick them on. Pop the glass in the fridge until you need it. Pour the crème de cacao, Baileys and vodka into a cocktail shaker with a handful of ice and shake until the outside of the shaker feels really cold. Strain into your prepared glass and serve. (Mary Berry’s Easter Feast)

Remove from the heat and add the cocoa powder and golden syrup. Mix together until fully combined and leave to cool at room temperature for about 15 mins. Put the biscuits in a freezer bag and use a rolling pin to bash them, leaving some pieces chunkier than others. Stir into the cooled chocolate with the marshmallows, cranberries and 150g of the mini eggs. Pour the mix into the tin and press down with the back of a spoon until even. Scatter over the remaining mini eggs, pressing them in a little, and leave to set in the fridge for 1 hr. Remove from the tin and cut into bars to serve. Will keep for up to 1 week in an airtight container.

Easter Egg Rocky Road (Makes 8-10 Bars) Ingredients 225g dark chocolate, broken into pieces 100g unsalted butter, cubed

How to choose a good boarding kennel for your pet?

Trusting someone to look after your precious pets while you are away on holiday can be tough, so you’ll have peace of mind if you do your research first. Here are our top tips on what to look for when choosing the right boarding kennel for your dog. • Good places book up fast, so start your search in plenty of time. • Get a personal recommendation if possible, and check the kennel is licensed by the local authority. • Drop in without an appointment and ask to look around –

you’ll be able to tell a lot from an unannounced visit. • Check the living area is warm, secure, clean and dry, with plenty of comfortable areas. • Ensure the location is not prone to flooding. • Dogs who don’t know each other should not be able to make nose, paw or eye contact – other dogs staring at them can be stressful. • A good boarding kennel will ask lots of questions about your pet, including diet, to help keep to their routine. • Where will your dog be exercised? Check the exercise area is safe and appropriate for your dog. • A good kennel will insist that dogs are up to date with vaccinations. • Ask about insurance cover and what the procedure is for contacting a vet and you in case of a veterinary emergency. • Find out how many staff there are per animal in the kennel. • It’s a good idea to add the kennel’s name, address and number to your dog’s microchip along with the dates they are in their care, in case they go missing while you are away. Check with your dog’s microchip database to see if this is possible. • As an alternative you could consider employing a pet sitter who stays in your home while you are away, or find a home boarder who will look after your dog in their own home. Many dogs may find a home environment more comfortable and less stressful than a kennel environment. For more information visit www.bluecross.org.uk

MAD DOG AN ENGLISHMAN LEWIS MOODY - MY LIFE IN RUGBY

Format: Hardback ISBN: 9781444734331 Price: £20 Hand Signed by Lewis Moody

Available from Cole’s Books, Bicester Lewis ‘Mad Dog’ Moody has been a familiar face in English rugby for fifteen successful and, at times, painful years. The former Leicester and now Bath flanker has seen and done it all in a sport that has changed beyond recognition from his first forays into the sport to the huge spectacle that rugby, and especially test match rugby, has become. Known for his near-suicidal fashion of playing the game, Moody has achieved as much as anyone in the history of the sport, from league, cup and European honours with an iconic Leicester Tigers team alongside the likes of Martin Johnson and Neil Back, to a 2003 World Cup winners medal and an MBE when still a young man. A great deal of heartbreak would follow - pain, illness, self-doubt and dark days in the four years before the next World Cup campaign that saw Moody and England fall in the 2007 final but he re-emerged to finally captain his country to a third World Cup campaign in 2011. Mad Dog - An Englishman is the story, warts and all, of one of the most-loved and respected British sporting figures; a story that allows the reader into the inner sanctum of a top rugby star’s life, from the early days of student and rugby dressing room mayhem, to the latter years of dedication to the cause, and utter professionalism against all odds. You may think some of Lewis Moody’s adventures are well-known. You would be wrong. In this searingly honest autobiography the original ‘Mad Dog’ lays himself bare and, along the way, takes you on an incredible journey that will make you laugh, cry and understand what it takes to construct a career as successful as Lewis Moody’s.
