TACKLING VISCERAL FAT Visceral fat is a certain type of fat found inside our abdominal cavity. It’s stored around internal organs like the liver, pancreas, kidneys, intestines and pancreas. The other type of fat, stored just under the skin is called subcutaneous fat. This is the fat you can pinch between your fingers and is your energy store.
You might not know you have visceral fat. Even slim people (with a normal BMI) can have accumulations of visceral fat without knowing it’s there. Generally a waist measurement of more than 35 inches for women and 40 inches for men, means you are more likely to have visceral fat.
How visceral fat affects our health Visceral fat is different to subcutaneous fat. It feels harder (think beer belly) and releases chemical messengers into the bloodstream which increase low-grade, harmful inflammation and fatty acids, affecting liver function and triggering health problems. Visceral fat is linked with an increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, dementia and some cancers. The inflammatory chemicals released by visceral fat can also affect hormone balance, disrupting mood, hunger and weight. Fat cells can also store toxins and even pathogens such as viruses. The body sees fat as a safe storage space and if the fat is coating your internal organs, this isn’t a great place to store them.

Reducing fat Reducing fat anywhere in your body also decreases visceral fat. A healthy lifestyle that includes cardio exercise, eating fibre-rich plant foods, avoiding too many carbs and sugar and reducing processed fats and alcohol can all help decrease fat. To specifically target visceral fat, add in high Intensity exercises and ensure you get enough quality sleep. Avoiding foods rich in fructose such as soft

drinks sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup can help reduce visceral fat accumulation. Stress makes you fat! The importance of managing stress can’t be ignored here! When you’re stressed, the body releases cortisol. Visceral fat has more receptors for cortisol than other fat. If stress continues, cortisol will be consistently high, encouraging your body to lay down more fat around your middle. Once this fat accumulates, you’ll tend to produce more cortisol, even after the stressful event has passed. The end result is you will inevitably accumulate more and more visceral fat in a stress/fat vicious cycle. Gut Health Some studies have shown that taking
care of the health of the bacteria in your gut by taking supplements of healthy bacteria can help reduce abdominal obesity. So, ensuring healthy gut bacteria may help to combat visceral fat. Accumulation of visceral fat is a sign your body needs support. Imbalances, especially in your hormonal system can affect how well (or not) you burn off stored fat. With all that you might think that I’d find the small Market Town of Buckingham a little boring but that is not the case. Fate played its part when, due to the owner’s house move, Finca El Monte was for sale. I bought it and the rest, as they say, is history! I still travel although mostly through the products I sell –

We are not perfect by any means but try our best to avoid waste and practice the 3Rs, (reduce, reuse, recycle), in everything we do and sell. Some say I’m a hoarder, but you’d be surprised how many times one cardboard box can be used, ‘in-around-out’ of the shop!

The Twyford Pantry
Eton mess roulade Heat the oven to 200ºC fan/gas 7. Using an electric mixer, whisk the egg yolks and caster sugar in a
bowl for 5-6 minutes until thick and creamy and the
beaters leave a ribbon pattern on the surface of the mixture when lifted. Gently fold in the flour, toasted nuts and vanilla.
In a separate bowl, whisk the egg whites to soft
peaks (the peaks should flop over when you lift out the beaters). Add a spoonful of the whites to the
cake batter and fold in briskly using a large spoon to loosen the mixture; fold in the rest in gentle figureof-eight movements – you don’t want to overmix and knock all the air out. Pour the mixture into

TASTER EVENINGS
THE ALLIUM Manor Farm, Buckingham Wow wow wow! Are the first words that come to mind when being treated to a wonderful 8 course tasting menu from Allium. Allium is the brain child of Michelin trained Chef Andy Tomlinson and I can honestly say his food was not only the most beautiful food I have ever seen but the whole menu was exquisite. We were lucky enough to be invited along to their eight course tasting menu at the of February and it was probably one of the best meals I have ever had. I always thought tasting menus were quite fussy and perhaps there would always be a few dishes that I didn’t like, but the entire menu was so palatable and the ingredients all complimented each other perfectly. Even the textures were great! Allium taster evenings are created to offer you a unique dining experience from the produce that they have available in and around Manor Farm. Andy and his team use their knowledge of farming and the seasons to guide the ingredients used in the menus throughout the year. Allium can be found right on our doorstep at Manor Farm where the Larder Café is based, along with the Cheese Room and a Butchery. On arrival we each received received a glass of champagne and were shown to our table. The waitress

was very knowledgeable and advised us on what drinks we should order to compliment our meal. Andy personally came out to describe to us in detail what each course was, how it was cooked and where the ingredients have come from, which I thought was a lovely and personal touch. As you can see from the photos, It is difficult to choose a favourite dish as they were all as good as each other! The price in my opinion was very reasonable for the quality of the food and to my delight the cost of a bottle of champagne was just £30!

Prepare hanging baskets under cover. Use container and basket compost for your hanging baskets which contains feed and moisture retaining properties or try the wool compost excellent at retaining moisture.
