P.S Thank you to all of our contributors this month...

In celebration of this milestone we would like to highlight the journey so far...

The clinic, known as LBC in town and it’s brightly yellow coloured fascia is Buckingham’s first multidisciplinary complementary healthcare clinic right in the heart of town and is the brainchild of founder, Simi Godagama who had a vision some 20 years ago to establish a holistic clinic in Buckingham one day. A vision that started while travelling enroute to her father’s patients and colleagues, often via Buckingham town centre.

Simi earmarked this town as a place she could see her vision for health and well-being grow strong. Over the years she learnt Osteopathic, Ayurvedic and Chinese Medicine and acupuncture and was fortunate enough to train with the late global leader of acupuncture Prof Anton Jayasuriya who also taught her own father more than 50years ago.

Her Ayurveda and natural health ancestry goes back to her own grandfather who was an agricultural manager in Sri Lanka and her father who ran a small medical clinic in a rural village in Sri Lanka. Nature and harmony has been an inheritance that Simi feels strongly about and shows in her work, be that as a published author, exhibited artist or practitioner. Dr Shantha Godagama, Simi’s father was one of the earliest qualified Ayurvedic Doctors to practice in the country and widely known as “The Father of Ayurveda” in the UK and serves as an honorary patron to the BAMC (British Ayurvedic Medical Council) where Simi, LBC Director also serves as an executive board member and committee chair. Together they are making history in the UK to standardise the practice of Ayurveda.

With immense heritage, vision, energy and passion, Simi serves LBC as its director and oversees the practice and its progress as well as conducting her own acupuncture

Inpractice.2020,the

pandemic happened and everyone was shutting up shop, including Simi at her private clinics further afield, however an opportunity arose to rescue and reinvigorate the local high streets with something we were all in need and awareness off- taking back control of our health. With a year of redevelopment and refurbishments, and a stoke of yellow paint here and there, LBC was ready for public.

They inaugurated its offering by inviting our very own Mayor, Margaret Gateley earlier this Spring, who stood outside the clinic on Market Square and made a powerful speech about the importance and impact of complementary medicine for our future health and

medicine is a natural approach to health and unlike what many may feel, can very much be in harmony with allopathic medicine (especially as new research allows the bridging of medical concepts).

Simi, being a firm advocate for both western and eastern medicine felt the time was right to offer this to Buckingham.

First, however there was a matter of finding the best in the field. With a strong eye for true practitionership, premier professionals in the field were approached, who followed a common ethos of compassion, a desire to support the wider community, and a true passion for their work with a collaborative and professional mindset. So the LBC clinic collective was formed.

Over 25 years in practice, Simi has worked in every single clinical setting there is, from gyms, to GP surgeries and continues to work in the UK’s prime health professionals location in Harley Street.

Within a year of practice, LBC has already being approached and sought after as one of the most highly reputable clinics in the country and its director has recently featured in a mainstream TV and documentary series who is also known for treating well known high profile individuals and celebrities as an acupuncturist and Ayurvedic practitioner.

Here’s the team:

Freya - The Osteopath

Tish - The Acupuncturist

Phaea - The Reflexologist

Louise - The Micropigmentation Expert (of LULUInk)

Dr Simi - The Principle Acupuncturist

Dr Vani - The Ayurvedic Doctor

Shon - The Sound Therapist

Jo - The Practice Manager

LBC has been active with Buckingham Town Council, local schools and fellow businesses and their own efforts for community events from the very first month since opening last year and hence welcomes anyone who feels they can support their endeavours. Do get in

TOP REASONS FOR CHOOSING WOODEN SHUTTERS!PLANTATION

Wooden shutters are becoming increasingly popular & it’s not hard to see why! We could list hundreds of reasons why you should choose wooden plantation shutters for your home but we will start with just 5!

We believe that the benefits you receive from having wooden shutters installed in your home or office merit the price you pay for them and in exchange receive a premium product. Our wooden shutters provide not only aesthetic qualities but practical uses. As we explain in just some of our reasons below:

1. Aesthetic quality. Wooden shutters bring something to your home in which blind & curtains simply cannot. They complement all types of decor & style, by fitting seamlessly in a wide range of sizes and mounting options.

2. Energy Efficiency. If you’re looking for something which not only looks beautiful but saves you money on your home heating bills, then wooden shutters are for you. They not only do a great job of keeping out cold winter draughts and keeping in the heat from your fire/ radiators. They also will help deflect sunlight in the Summer keeping your room cooler saving on the use of air conditioning & fans.

3. Child-Safe. In a modern-day busy family home, you need to know your children are as safe as they can be in their own space. The cords from blinds are not only super tempting to little hands to pull and potentially pull down, but to also get stuck in. You can rest assured with wooden shutters there are no excess dangling strings to get stuck in!

4. Low Maintenance. Two words all busy household love to hear! Shutters are super low maintenance, cleaning just takes a damp cloth to wipe away any dust, grime or marks. No need to waste your time trying to carefully wipe each individual plastic slate on a blind without bending or breaking them. One quick wipe & they’ll be gleaming.

5. Complete Privacy. When you’re relaxing in your own home you want to feel as if there is no-one else around you. You are in your own haven of bliss. Wooden Shutters can help by adding complete privacy to the room without losing all light from outside in seconds.

Just one more reason (we couldn’t stop at 5) did you know wooden shutters actually increase your homes market value, so if it wasn’t enough that they had saved you money on your energy bills, they have also increased your home’s value! An investment well worth

COLONIC HYDROTHERAPY

SO MUCH MORE THAN A FLAT STOMACH (ALTHOUGH WHAT’S NOT TO LIKE ABOUT THAT?)

I t is a common misconception that colonic hydrotherapy is simply about ‘clearing out’ waste and gases and can at most help with constipation, bloating and give a flatter stomach. This is of course true, but a Colonic (unlike an enema), is a lot more than a procedure to cleanse the bowel.

A Colonic Hydrotherapy treatment does of course work on the physical level, providing relief from accumulated waste, poisons and hormones, but it also works on the nervous system and provides a unique balancing effect on that which controls healing and homeostasis (the parasympathetic portion of the autonomic nervous system).

R esearch on the vagus nerve (the main portion of the parasympathetic nervous system) is only just starting to demonstrate how powerfully potent its stimulation is to healing. The vagus nerve provides direct access to our subconscious and is often deregulated when we are faced with deep trauma. A lot of studies on trauma work have shown the necessity to reconnect with the parasympathetic in order to unlock the trauma we hold in our muscles and tissues. This may explain how colonic hydrotherapy can sometimes stimulate powerful emotional reactions and often brings a sense of profound wellness.

A side from the physical effect from the water on the nervous system and the purging outcome, a colonic therapist also actively participates in the manipulation of viscera and abdominal tissues to help realign, relax and soften the tendons and ligaments that maintain organs in place. Abdominal tension, poor posture and poor breathing technique all conspire to reduce function of the organ and of the gut in particular. To work on the tissues, re-educate breathing and facilitate core stability is also part of an experienced colonic therapist’s skills.

A Colonic Hydrotherapy treatment is a unique and gentle tool to help with conditions such as:

• Constipation

• Diarrhoea

• Irritable Bowel Syndrome

• Spastic Colon

• Atonic (Sluggish) Colon

E ncouraging the elimination of lingering waste and intestinal gas can also help with other digestive problems like:

• Diverticulosis (not when inflamed)

• Bloating

• Flatulence

• Indigestion

• Candida Parasites

C olonics may also be beneficial to those with the following conditions, especially if they are linked to poor elimination or compromised gut function, especially alongside further detoxification support:

• Allergies

• Arthritis

• Asthma

• Halitosis (Bad breath)

• Multiple Sclerosis

• Skin problems such as eczema, acne,

•psoriasisHormonal problems such as Oestrogen dominance

How lucky have we been with some of the warmer weather this Summer! A little too warm in places for some of you I imagine but it’s been great to get more use out of the summer wardrobe this year for sure. I hope your gardens have fared well and not too much has been lost with a lack of rain – especially as its Harvest Festival time coming up in a few weeks’ time, and the inspiration for the recipes I have chosen for this issue. We also officially say hello to Autumn this month on September 22nd. I don’t know about you; I think the seasonal calendar dates seriously need some updating to match what is happening weatherwise! Hopefully the next couple of months will remain to be warm, so we can sit on blankets rather than be wrapped in them and enjoy some of the last days in the garden and barmy evenings before it starts getting colder again and we knock the moths off the jumpers.

Officially Harvest Festival is on 2nd October in 2022 (The Sunday closest to the Harvest Moon) but can be celebrated on or around that date depending on where it is taking place. For those that are unsure, it’s the nearest we get to a Thanksgiving where we celebrate and give thanks for the crops grown on the land this year… so BIG THANKS to all the farming families out there. Historically it was held when the last the of the crops had been harvested and the community knew whether they had enough food to see them through the Winter months but nowadays it is more symbolic. We celebrate our gratitude, not just for the food from the land, whether it be farmed on a large scale or from our own gardens and allotments, but also how lucky we are with the positive things in life – friends, family and our community. There are many ways you could celebrate it if you are not planning on attending a church service - Arrange a get-together with nearest and dearest (and make use of the fruits of your labour outdoors), do a doorstep delivery to someone in your community who would appreciate a treat – either fresh vegetables or home picked flowers, or you could just drop an item into the food bank basket the next time you are shopping. Its good for the soul to stop and say thank you every now and then, so this seems like a good a time as any!

With love and gratitude from mine to yours. Tina x

Pick the basil leaves and set aside, then finely slice the stalks. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a large casserole pan or saucepan over a medium heat, add the chopped aubergines, courgettes and peppers (you may need to do this in batches) and fry for around 5 minutes, or until golden and softened, but not cooked through.

Spoon the cooked veg into a large bowl. To the pan, add the onion, garlic, basil stalks and thyme leaves with another drizzle of oil, if needed. Fry for 10 to 15 minutes, or until softened and golden. Return the cooked veg to the pan and stir in the fresh and tinned tomatoes, the balsamic and a good pinch of sea salt and black pepper. Autumn in the garden

Plenty of beautiful rich vibrant autumn foliage and berried displays to warm the heart. Autumn, winter bedding is in stock and ready to use in late season hanging baskets and containers, or to liven up borders and displays.

Despite most nursery stock being pot grown with a root system so it can be planted throughout the year, it is now traditionally the autumn planting season. As the weather cools down the plant growth is also slowing down so things planted now will concentrate on establishing roots rather than top growth. It is the perfect time for beginning that big project in the garden. Maybe a new border or some fruit trees and bushes.

Bulbs, bulbs and more bulbs! From late August we have spring-flowering bulbs aplenty; come and check out the huge range of bulbs we stock. Simple bulb planning can give you colour right through until May. Starting with snowdrops, iris, crocus and narcissus to early, mid and late tulips. Why not try a burst of Fritillaria Imperials or some grand alliums. Bulbs can be incorporated to use as cut flowers, to grow in woodlands, grown for their fragrance or simply colour. Consider planting a long flowering lasagne pot by layering your bulbs starting with the latest flowering tulips at the bottom and the earliest flowering iris, crocus or snowdrops at the top.

Garlic and onions need to be planted now. It is really a good time for rejuvenating tired lawns with seed or turf ready for next year. We have a selection of netting which comes in useful to cover ponds before leaf fall gets underway.

BUCKINGHAMSHIRE SCOUTS SUPPORTING THAMES VALLEY AIR AMBULANCE

Beaver Scouts (boys and girls aged 6 to 8) and Cub Scouts (boys and girls aged 8 to 10) across Buckinghamshire have been raising money for the Thames Valley Air Ambulance. The children can earn a challenge badge for participating in four activities. The four activities are flight, fundraising, medical and accident prevention. The activities gave children the opportunity to learn about how to prevent accidents, what to do in an emergency, find out about the Air Ambulance and help to raise some money. Children across the County have come up with some intuitive ideas. These have included making paper aeroplanes, learning the phonetic alphabet, and designing posters.

The area around fundraising has seen some unusual ideas. These have included a sponsored walk that finished at a chip shop, a jam jar challenge, sponsored obstacle course, Christmas post and doing odd jobs in the community.

Tessa Ingram, lead volunteer for Beaver Scouts in Buckinghamshire said, “The challenge badge has been beneficial for both Scouts and the Air Ambulance. The children have loved finding out about the air ambulance and have learnt new skills. They’ve also done lots of fund raising and this helps the Air Ambulance. It’s been a win, win for all of us.”

Cub Scout Sophia and Beaver Scout Charlotte were asked what they liked about being involved in Scouts. They listed badges, being outside, games, learning new skills, orienteering, teamwork and walks as their favourite activities.

Adult volunteer, Sue Sell said, “You get an incredible amount of enjoyment as a volunteer. Seeing children achieving goals, trying something for the first time and if they aren’t successful trying again. There are many occasions when I come across someone who was in Beavers and is now doing well at school, at university or doing well in work and I often reflect on how I helped them when they were in Beavers and how they have developed.”

In 2003, England won the Rugby World Cup. Steve Thompson was there, in England’s front row, at the heart of the match, and at the heart of the scrum - one of sport’s most destructive, repetitive Butimpacts.thetriumphs

came at a cost. When rugby union turned professional, Steve was plunged into a game where raw power meant everything. Today, he remembers nothing about playing in that final. In his words, watching the tape back is like watching a ghost.

The years of hurt in an era of professional meat shields, and the culture of sucking up punishment and coming back for more, have taken a terrible toll. Steve has been diagnosed with early onset dementia, and probable chronic traumatic encephalopathy. He is in his early forties. There are days when he doesn’t remember the names of his wife and four kids.

Unforgettable is part sports memoir - with stories contributed by his world-cup winning teammates and his former manager, Sir Clive Woodward - and part raw human storytelling. In it, Steve will make memories for himself and for his children, and will relive the biggest battle of his life, with his toughest opponent - his own mind.

Despite the constant reminders of what has been lost, and what is still to lose, Steve’s powerful story is one of hope and courage. Unforgettable stands as testament to the ultimate strength of the human mind - and to a man no longer pushing himself to the limit for competition, but for his own place in the world.

A FORWARD...GREENWAY

Currently, residents in the Claydons can find it daunting to cycle between local villages or to Buckingham and Winslow due to fast moving traffic on our winding country roads. With the current high prices for petrol and diesel, and expected rises in the future, we are being encouraged to find greener ways to travel for journeys with a distance of 6 miles or less.

Claydon Cycling Club are excited to announce we are working with Greenway and Cycleroutes Limited, a charity set up to help local communities develop walking and cycling routes.

We have been invited to collaborate on the Buckinghamshire Greenway Project, an accessible, highquality active travel route, connecting people and communities running the full length of the county.

The project already has a fully operating route between Wendover and Waddesdon, with the additional cycleway being added to join Colne Valley Park in the South, to Brackley in the North of the county.

Club members have been out in the fields looking at the planned route, spanning from Greatmoor to Buckingham, which will run through Steeple Claydon and some other local villages.

The 3 metre wide asphalt cycleway will be a great addition to the area and will hopefully encourage many more local people to skate, scoot or cycle to Buckingham, Aylesbury and beyond for work, education or social activities. The Greenway is also planned to link up with rail and bus services, helping with a safe alternative to local car journeys.

This is part of a vision for a North-South National Cycleway connecting London and the West Midlands, and communities in between.

Alongside local community based groups, like Claydon Cycling Club, Buckinghamshire Council, Sustrans and the Department for Transport are all involved to bring the Buckinghamshire Greenway vision to life.

If you would like to know more about the Greenway Project or have any other questions about cycling or active travel, please email comms@claydoncyclingclub.com
