The Yoga Garden Sanctuary The locally based Yoga Garden Sanctuary was originally a garden yoga studio created from a love and passion for practicing and teaching yoga outside. A space designed for you to breathe slower and deeper, to pause and reconnect, to take a slower pace both on your mat and off the mat into life’s fullness and richness.  Over the last year the Yoga Garden Sanctuary has had to adapt, the focus changed bringing the pause to the home space, through online classes and home yoga collections. Therapeutic treats for the senses combining luxury wellbeing items and experiences to soothe, help sleep and relax a tired body and mind. Designed to renew and restore. Going forwards the Yoga Garden Sanctuary is now the garden setting, the garden studio and the home yoga collections. A garden designed to awaken the senses and soothe tired minds. Planted with herbs and soft ethereal flowers to enchant the visitor and invite a pause. Seating areas flow through the garden encouraging you to take time to just be, slow down, sip a herbal tea … before/ after class and bring people together. The garden studio is positioned at the bottom of a garden tucked in by natural hedges with bifold doors opening the outside in. A heated floor and calm tranquil interior are the perfect antidote and setting for your wellbeing and classes at The Yoga Garden Sanctuary. When the weather is warmer a yoga deck surrounded by planting is an extra space to sit, move, meditate and relax.

Yoga classes Yoga classes at The Sanctuary focus on bringing yoga to anyone who wishes to try yoga from the mat to the chair. All that is required is an open mind. Classes combine breathwork, movement and poses (asanas) to 6

build strength, wellness and to increase / maintain mobility. Focus changes with the seasons and so in winter a slower more restorative practice is encouraged, in spring/early summer more energising flows. Time is given to breath, body and spirit and students are invited to take yoga on a level that works for them. Props are encouraged and variations and adaptations are offered in classes. Styles of yoga taught include hatha, flow, yin and restorative yoga along with beginners courses and private 1-1 sessions for meditation and relaxation, wellbeing and breath inquiry. (improving how you breathe)

Get in touch with me If you would like to know more about my mat and chair classes, arrange a 1-1 class or perhaps you would like to arrange a special treat for friends or family please get in touch. Sessions are completely tailored for you, your needs and what level you want yoga to meet you. If you are interested in bringing the pause into your home the home yoga collections can be found on my website. Storage Problems Solved Blue Bear Self Storage has been based in Buckingham at Home Farm next to PSP Auctions for three years. As the team live around the area it was natural that Buckingham would establish itself as the company’s headquarters. It all began when George Hanbury, the co-founder of the company, found himself struggling to find affordable storage after moving house four years ago. “I was shocked at the prices I had to pay” George explains, “and I started to think there must be a more cost effective solution to peoples’ self-storage needs.” He had no idea it would lead to a business venture with James Jackson-Stops, a longtime friend, – and the birth of Blue Bear Self Storage. If value for money is a primary aim of the company another key selling point is ease of access. Blue Bear are on a mission to become market leaders in drive-up self-storage units, a system where you can park close to your storage unit and unload with as little hassle as possible. “We wanted to make the storage process easier to use for everybody”, James says, “so no trolleys, lifts or traipsing down long aisles on the top floor of a high building. At the same time we wanted to make sure there was no compromising on customer service. The company use brand new, purposely modified shipping containers for storage. “There is a misunderstanding around shipping containers James says, “people ask if they leak –

10

TO ADVERTISE WITH US VISIT COMMUNITYCONTACT.CO.UK OR CALL 07882 194830

assuming they are battered and bruised from being used on ships. But that’s totally not the case with our containers. They are made specifically for storage and the only journey they have made is the one to England. Everything including soft furnishings stays safe and dry.” Security is a top priority for Blue Bear. Each site is CCTV monitored and securely fenced with controlled access. Every customer is ID checked for extra protection. “Just because we are pushing to provide our customers with the best value does not mean we have to compromise on any aspect of the business” George says. The company prides itself on responding swiftly to customers’ needs – which can come in various forms. “You never know when you will need storage”, James says, “You might go travelling, move house, start a business from your house, the list goes on – and sometimes it can be very last-minute”. The Blue Bear team are determined to ensure that you don’t have to pay the earth for decent self-storage. When, recently, they went to a large indoor facility in the locality they found the cost of storing the contents of a one or two-bedroom house was double the price of storing with Blue Bear. Both partners have a background in property and real estate. Both always had a desire to run their own business. They are dedicated to pushing new concepts and methods to continue improving their business and to pass savings back to their customers. “It’s something we have become passionate about”, James says, “We love meeting new customers and really appreciate any feedback they provide.” Buckingham is proving an ideal location for their enterprise – both geographically and professionally. ”We enjoy being involved with the community”, James says, “There’s a lot going on in and around the town – which draws people in – from the Buckingham Literary Festival to local fetes. I even found myself entering my Border terrier in a dog show in the town and came second in the class for ‘Owner most like dog’. We also enjoy getting to know - and supporting - local businesses . If I’m ever spotted in a suit – it will be courtesy of the Buckingham Tailor.” James says. Visit www.bluebearstorage.co.uk/locations/buckingham/ for more information.

WHAT’S THE ALTERNATIVE? There are many reasons people consider turning to an ‘alternative’ or complementary approach to addressing a health concern. For some, it may be the last resort when a conventional route hasn’t resolved their health issue and old symptoms return. Alternatively, some wish to get to the bottom of a chronic condition rather than just deal with the symptoms or feel they could benefit from a complementary therapy alongside an existing treatment. Maybe conventional medicine has simply not been able to identify what’s wrong. And for others, seeking out alternative therapies is a preventative approach to staying in good health. Whatever the reason, it’s becoming more and more popular to turn to alternative therapies and health care systems to tackle modern day health concerns. Signs that some of these practises are becoming ‘accepted’ as effective can be seen by the changes to recent National Institute of Health and Care Institute (NICE) guidelines that suggests Acupuncture should be considered instead of painkillers for chronic pain. What connects all complementary therapies is that the approach is always person-centred, or ‘holistic’ - acknowledging that humans are an integration of the physical, mental, emotional, spiritual; and social and that the whole picture of a person’s health needs to be taken into consideration when creating a protocol for treatment. If you’re not sure about alternative therapies here’s a quick run down of just a few: Naturopathy A distinct health care system, blending modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine. Based on the healing power of nature, supporting and stimulating the body’s ability to heal itself. Naturopathy is the art and science of disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention using natural therapies

22

LOUISE LAMBERT-DAY PLACE EIGHT WELLNESS including: nutrition, botanicals, hydrotherapy, homeopathy, fasting, naturopathic manipulation, exercise, lifestyle counselling, detoxification and chelation, environmental assessment and adjustment, spiritual healing, health promotion and disease prevention. Naturopathic Nutrition Stresses the use of whole and organic foods as medicine – an integral concept of healing in many indigenous societies. Today, we see that a return to chemical-free foods, along with other dietary measures, can be an effective answer to many health complaints and common conditions. Acupuncture One of the longest established forms of healthcare in the world. The focus is always on the individual, not the illness, and all symptoms are seen in relation to each other. Treatment involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body to affect the flow of your body’s qi, or vital energy. Clinical Reflexology A non-invasive therapy which focusses on the feet. This therapy helps the body to re-balance and begin its own healing process. Clinical reflexology works on the principle that different areas of the feet, hands and ears, correspond to all the different areas of the body, including the internal organs and glands. Chiropractic Chiropractors use a range of techniques to reduce pain, improve function and increase mobility, including hands-on manipulation of the spine. They work on the basis that interference within the nervous system can affect your body’s ability to function fully. These methods of adjustment rebalance the body, encouraging the nervous system to function more efficiently and stimulate the body’s own ability to heal.

Herbal Medicine Herbal medicines are plant-based medicines made from differing combinations of plant parts e.g. leaves, flowers or roots. Each part can have different medicinal uses and the many types of chemical constituents require different extraction methods. Both fresh and dried plant matter are used, depending on the herb. Homeopathy Homeopathic medicines are generally derived from plants, minerals and other naturallyoccurring substances. They are prepared by specialised pharmacies who apply a highly controlled process of dilution, which results in a non-toxic yet, paradoxically, more effective medicine. Homeopathy treats people rather than illnesses and as a result, no matter what the diagnosis, homeopathic treatment can be used safely. Osteopathy A non-invasive system of diagnosis and manual therapy that aims to improve health by manipulating and strengthening the musculoskeletal framework. An osteopath will focus on the joints, muscles, and spine

but recognise that body parts function in an integrated manner and if one part of the body is restricted, others will compensate often leading to inflammation and pain. As such, treatment also aims to positively affect the body’s nervous, circulatory, and lymphatic systems. Massage Not just an indulgence, massage can also be a powerful tool for health and well-being — from easing pain and inflammation to soothing stress and anxiety. Massage helps facilitate recovery from injury or exercise and aids blood circulation throughout the body. Improved blood circulation allows damaged and tense muscles to be filled with oxygen-rich blood so healing can be enhanced. Yoga An ancient form of exercise focussing on strength, flexibility and breathing to boost physical and mental wellbeing. With a growing body of research proving yoga’s healing benefits, it’s no wonder that more Western doctors are prescribing this ancient practice.

HI, I’M JESS

Hazy, Lazy, Crazy Days of Summer Well Summer is well and truly here and the work that I put in earlier in the year is really paying off. The Poly tunnel has provided me with blooms since March and now is so full of flowers it’s like a jungle in there. The rest of the plot is a riot of flowers and bees and bouquets of all colours are being cut and delivered every day. It’s a joy to come to work every day!

DAHLIA They are here again, the beautiful Dahlia. I look forward to their arrival each year and in my opinion are one of there finest flowers you can grow in your garden. This year I have planted over 100 plants and I fear I will order that number again for next year and double my stock. Dahlia are the star of my own garden and the cutting garden from now until the frosts claim them in late Autumn. Keep dead heading them to encourage more and more flowers, if you are using them as cut flowers, don’t be scared to cut them really long and then remove

28

I have always loved being outside and noticing the wildlife that plants and flowers bring into our gardens. As a youth I was much happier surrounded by my pets and plants than anything else, this has never changed. Now at the age of 40 I think I’m where I’m meant to be; surrounded once again by plants and pets. For the last 14 years I have been a florist, I have owned my own shop, been studio based and freelanced for some amazing florists, and worked at amazing venues all over the country. During the last 5 years I have had the space to grow my own flowers, often adding the perfect bloom into my floral displays. I will be selling my cut flowers well into the Autumn so please get in touch and you can pop ups to the plot and choose your blooms or leave it to me and I will get you the best I have. www.lollyandthehare.co.uk @lollyandthehare Jess - 07515 918222

the side shoots, the plant will thank you and throw up new stems in a matter of days. Stake you plants before they get too tall, it’s heartbreaking if they get too heavy and fall to the ground.

JOBS FOR JULY • Now is the last chance to plant out any Half Hardy Annuals such as Cosmos, Nicotiana and Zinnia, plant them now and they should flower into the middle of Autumn. • If you planted any Biennial seeds in late May then this them out now and give the stronger plants a chance to grow bigger and stronger. • Take cuttings from Pelargoniums. I grow Attar of Roses as a beautifully scented foliage and by taking cuttings now and keeping them frost free over Winter, I get a much better crop next year. • It’s time to trim your Lavender plants to stop then getting really woody, they also look much neater without the driedflower heads still on the plants. • Feed your Roses after the first flush of flowers and hopefully your will get a gorgeous second flowering too. • Normally July and august are times for a Summer Holiday, this year may be slightly different but if you are managing to get a. FOLLOW @LOLLYANDTHEHARE ON INSTAGRAM then make sure you have a good friend of neighbour pop over and water your garden while you are away. They could also cut themselves a bunch of flowers or two which will help with the deadheading. • Keep harvesting, deadheading and enjoying your garden and KEEP WATERING!!! If we have a long hot summer then your plants will need a bit of extra water to keep looking their best.

Hello and welcome to Wild Rose Flower Company, an artisan flower farm, growing beautiful English country flowers on our working farm in Hoggeston, nr Winslow in north Buckinghamshire. Working with the seasons, we grow the best varieties possible from April to October focussing on naturally scented country garden flowers which make the most beautiful bouquets, home arrangements and for flowering those special celebrations in our lives including country style weddings. Our flowers lend themselves to creating naturalistic wild arrangements with elements of foraged hedgerow and woodland from our farm. We grow without using chemicals, no floral foam in our floristry and are as kind to the environment around us as we can possibly be.. talking of which we do keep bees. We offer a seasonal bouquet service 6 days a week Mon to Sat (with a minimum of 24 hours notice for ordering), our Flower Club is a subscription service offering fortnightly or monthly buckets of fresh flowers delivered to your door within a 7 mile radius of the farm, or you are welcome to collect. We take great care when creating very natural funeral flower arrangements and tributes, they are always 100% biodegradable making them suitable for woodland and green funerals. For country weddings which work perfectly with our flowers we offer DIY buckets for brides to decorate their own weddings including vintage prop hire and a bridal floristry service. We also enjoy working with stylists and local studio florists. On Fridays and Saturdays during the flower season we open our charming Artisan Gift shop located in the old Granary on the farm. Hello sunshine!!! What a welcome sight the sun has been after a record wet April and May… ”good for the garden” soon became a phrase we got tired of saying! Let us hope it’s here to stay for a good while yet so we can enjoy those outdoor spaces we craved for during the Winter. With overseas travel still cautiously restricted, more people are looking closer to home for their holidays which is not a bad thing, the UK has so many beautiful places to see. Some of you are hitting the campsites oldschool style, some taking out the campervans for a tour across the shires and some are simply choosing to have a “staycation” at home to enjoy those beautiful gardens you created during Lockdown. Whichever way you choose to spend your precious time I am sure, for many, the Barbeque will play a big part. In the May/June issue Kate did a great article on the ins and outs of all things BBQ so now time for some recipes to enjoy! Nothing feels more like being on holiday than a plate of charred giant prawns with an ice-cold beer or something white and fruity in a glass. I wanted to eat the picture it looked so yummy on the Good Food website. I’ve also included a yummy chicken drumstick recipe which should go down a treat at any sized gathering and they are done in the oven leaving more time and space on the BBQ for everything else!. I found an easy-peasy tasty side that will go with most things.. and as you are supposed to lose weight while eating celery, it should cancel out the calories in the rest of the ingredients (although you can always choose low fat if preferred) but I feel some things are supposed to taste as creamy and rich as they are intended. And lastly, something sweet. I’ve gone for a BBQ fruity number that will make you think twice, again easy to prepare and serve, leaving you more time to be outside and enjoy the company of those you are with or your own time to yourself. Enjoy the summer months ahead and remember, strawberries are not the only thing that need cream on them – make sure you have your factor 30 on, even if it’s a cloudy day. See you soon. Tina xxx

cook for 45-50 minutes until the chicken is cooked and the meat will come away from the bone easily. You will need to baste the chicken 3 or 4 times during the cooking to ensure that the skin gets covered in the glaze and it goes all sticky. When cooked, remove the tray from the oven. Drizzle in the sesame oil and toss in the sesame seeds. Throw in the sliced spring onions and the finely sliced chillies. Roll the chicken all around making sure that they all get a good covering. source: Tom Kerridge Best Ever Dishes

Ingredients 12 chicken drumsticks 4 tbsp runny honey 4 tbsp dark soy sauce 3 tbsp malt extract (available from most supermarkets and Holland and Barrett) 150ml chicken stock 3tbsp toasted sesame seeds 2tbsp sesame oil 2 cloves of grated garlic 1 3cm stick of fresh ginger, grated 1 bunch of spring onions, finely sliced 1 green chilli finely sliced Salt and pepper to season

Method In a frying pan, pour in the runny honey and place on a medium to high heat until it caramelises, watch it carefully. When it starts to go dark, pour in the soy sauce and chicken stock, to stop the cooking. Bring to the boil and whisk in the malt extract. Remove from the heat and leave to cool. Place the drumsticks into a bowl and pour on the cooked stock. Mix in the grated garlic and ginger, cover the bowl with clingfilm and leave to marinade for at least 2 hours, but overnight will be better. Pre-heat the oven to 170°C/325°F. Place the drumsticks into a roasting tray and pour the marinade on top. Place the tray into the oven and

The Festival of Beer is back!

A crafty concoction of music, refreshment, feasting and festivity set in the beautiful British countryside.

We are so pleased to announce that The Festival of Beer is returning to Buckinghamshire this September. The event has grown so much since it began as a one-day event in 2017, this year sees the festival run across three days! We are bringing you our most impressive line-up to date, including funk, soul, world and electronic music; we have also handpicked the best beers and the finest street-food from all over the UK. Heading up the music line-up are electronic afro-funk band Ibibio Sound Machine, New York disco pioneers Odyssey and the king of soul and funk himself, Craig Charles. Other acts confirmed include Greg Wilson, The Cuban Brothers, Rob Da Bank, Don Letts, The Allergies and comedian Milton Jones heading up the comedy stage. Featured breweries include Rivington, Bath Ales, Northern Monk, Squawk and many more. If you have not been to The Festival of Beer before, then we assure you it will not disappoint! The festival is set in the stunning Buckinghamshire countryside on Blackpit Farm, with acres of ancient woodland, parklands and lakes. The festival offers the perfect antidote to post lockdown life, with free activities like paddle boarding, canoeing, wild swimming, yoga, live brewing, beer talks, tree climbing and much more! Not much of a camper? We are sure to win you round. We have plush toilets and

hot showers to create a real home-fromhome experience, along with glamping and pre-erected tent options, so you can just rock up ready to get the party started! Festival tickets for the weekend, Friday 3rd September to Sunday 5th September from £79 per adult, and just £25 per child, are on sale at www.thefestivalofbeer.co.uk. This includes on site camping for three nights. Should restrictions at the time not permit the event to go ahead, all tickets can be transferred to 2022 or refunded. More details can be found on our website.

www.thefestivalofbeer.co.uk

“We’re delighted to be back after a year off last year due to covid. The wide range of on-site activities really sets The Festival of Beer apart from your average boutique festival. Whether it’s partying and getting lost in the woods, sit-down dining experiences, recharging with yoga and wellbeing, or taking part in outdoor activities like freshwater swimming, The Festival of Beer is a space to play, indulge, revitalise and make new friends.”

Duncan Wheeler, Festival Director “The Festival of Beer was definitely one of my 2019 highlights and one of the last festivals I DJed at before lockdown... a perfect mix of lovely people, great installations and spot on beer!”

Do you have land?

land & estate agents

A yard? A site with buildings? A redundant brownfield site?

It could be worth a small fortune!

Land values have soared over recent months and, today, land used for biodiversity net gain or carbon offset is in high demand. With so much new legislation and the effects of mass homeworking, values have changed. Also, with the new Buckinghamshire Local Plan to 2040, many new sites will have to be identified over the coming months.
