So it’s finally Easter weekend! It’s the first bank holiday weekend of the year and we get four days off!
But why do we celebrate Easter? Easter is the time for holidays, festivals and a time for giving chocolate Easter eggs. But Easter means much more. Easter is the oldest and the most important date in the Christian Calandar as the celebration of the death and coming to life again of Jesus Christ. For Christians, the dawn of Easter Sunday with its message of new life is the high point of the Christian year. Easter is the story of Jesus’ last days in Jerusalem before his death. The Easter story includes Maundy Thursday (the Last supper leading to the Eucharist), Good Friday (the day on which Jesus was crucified) and Easter Sunday (the day on which Jesus came back to life). It is a sad story because Jesus died, but the story has a very happy ending, because Jesus came back to life and visited his friends and followers once more. He did not die at all, but went back up to Heaven to be with God, his father. Easter also marks the end of lent and for many who have given up a certain food (like chocolate!) can start eating it again on Easter Sunday!

Easter Facts 1. Every child in the UK receives an average of 8.8 Easter eggs every year – double their recommended calorie intake for a whole week! 2. The largest ever Easter egg hunt was in Florida, where 9,753 children searched for 501,000 eggs. 3. With all those eggs and other chocolate treats for family, relatives, loved ones and friends, it should be no surprise that households spend an average of £75 on Easter each year. 4. The world’s most popular eggshaped chocolate is Cadbury’s Creme Egg. Workers at Cadbury in Birmingham produce 1.5 million of these every day. 5. The White House hosts an Easter Egg Roll on the front lawn each year. This tradition was started by President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1878.

St George’s Day Not many of us celebrate St George’s Day, in fact we are more than likely to celebrate St Patrick’s Day rather than our own Patron Saint St George! This St George’s Day why not get down to London and celebrate St George’s Day with a day of free activities, food stalls, children’s games and more at the Mayor of London’s annual Feast of St George in Trafalgar Square? While St George’s Day is officially on 23 April, the event in Trafalgar Square will take place on 25 April from noon until 6pm. Organised by the Mayor of London, the Feast of St George is inspired by St George’s Day’s 13th-century origins as a national day of feasting. There’ll be lots of things for all ages to enjoy: • • • • • •
Explore market stalls selling mouth-watering treats such as hog roasts and homemade pies Dine in a banqueting area surrounded by Trafalgar Square’s iconic fountains Watch live demonstrations from leading London chefs See live performances from talented musicians, artists and entertainers Enjoy some family fun with a host of indoor and outdoor games Get creative in arts and crafts stalls and food workshops
The History of St George and the Dragon St George is the patron saint of England. His name is most commonly associated with the legend of St George and the Dragon. In the mythical tale, George obtains glory by slaying a dragon that is terrorising the countryside and is about to eat a beautiful princess. George survives the ordeal by invoking the sign of the cross. As a mark of their gratitude, the local citizens all convert to Christianity and seek to copy George’s chivalrous, princess-saving behaviour. The story is loosely based on a real-life George who was born around 280AD and grew up to become a Christian soldier of the Roman Empire. The myth of St George and the Dragon in England was known prior to the Norman conquest in 1066. But the idea of George as the nation’s patron saint probably caught on around William Shakespeare’s time. Restaurant Review: The Black Boy, Oving The Black Boy is now under new management. Ian and Lisa have years of experience providing front of house service at the highest standards, and together with their friendly team of staff wait to meet you and try to make your visit a pleasant and memorable experience. Situated in the heart of rural Buckinghamshire, 5 miles north of Aylesbury, this 16th Century pub is proud of it’s consistently good food, fine wine and real ales. There are two hand pulls and they are currently serving Doombar and Side Pocket, making good use of the local Tring brewery. The Black Boy at Oving was built in the early part of the 16th Century. The original building is still standing and boasts two open fires, an open bar area, a snug with sofas and a large extension housing the restaurant area which seats approximately 50 people. The restaurant has views over generous and picturesque gardens which flow practically seamlessly into The Vale of Aylesbury. It is rumoured that The Hossle or village pond, situated at the bottom of the pub gardens, was used as a camp by Oliver Cromwell and his New Model Army after sacking nearby Bolebec Castle at Whitchurch. Our highly regarded chef, Paul King, in residence at the Black Boy produces a menu using locally sourced produce of exceptional quality enabling him to deliver consistently good food. Our menu is available on our website and Paul is pleased to offer various specials on a daily basis.

Spring Table Arrangement

Spring flowers are such a joy and after a dull winter they are a refreshing reminder of nature’s beauty. So add an injection of colour to your table and bring a little of the outside inside this Easter with a simple Spring table arrangement. What you will need to make your Spring arrangement: • • • •
A pot, without holes in the bottom A block of florists foam Florist pot tape A selection of flowers and foliage
For example I have used: Lilac, Viburnum Opulus, Hellebores, Spray Roses, Clematis, Silver Birch twigs and Eucalyptus foliage. Cut the block of florist foam to the right size for your pot. It needs to sit a few centimetres higher than the rim of your pot. Soak the foam in water and tape it securely into the pot.
Starting with your foliage, roughly cover the oasis. You can keep it as wild or as neat as you want it to be. Don’t worry if you can still see a lot of the foam at this stage, the flowers will cover this up.
Start adding your flowers one variety at a time. Keep it neat or loose for your chosen style. I like mine a bit wild and natural for these flower types.
Place your pot on a table or windowsill to be admired. At Spring time your local florist will be bursting with colour, scent and lots of gorgeous flowers that Spring brings with it. Our Wedding Diary I have worked in events for many years so planning my wedding should be easy, right? Well it is and it isn’t… we have a lot of work to do and not a lot of time to plan the fun stuff! We have just over 5 months to go and there is still time! The main item is bought though… THE DRESS! I was so happy to finally find my dress in February at Serendipity Brides in Weedon, I thoroughly recommend them by the way – every bride I know seems to find their perfect dress here! My dear friend Jessica Rose is helping me with flowers, she is the most talented florist I know! Top Food Festivals To Visit This Summer... Thame Food Festival is a local festival packed full of food producers, food retailers, chefs, food and drink experts all from the local area. The Festival was introduced in the town in 2008 to promote and celebrate the wealth of wonderful food producers, food retailers, chefs, food and drink experts, restaurants and cafes in the local area. This remains the ‘raison d’etre’ of the event. The event also showcases the town, which is a beautiful historic market town in Oxfordshire.
Brought to you by Jamie Oliver and Alex James this is waaay more than just a food festival. Set on Alex James’ farm in the Cotswolds, the 2-day party will also hold host to some huge names in the music world (Paloma Faith, Groove Armada and Ella Eyre announced so far) as well as showcasing a vast array of the UK’s top street foods. It’s even raising money for Jamie Oliver’s very own charity, The Better Food Foundation.

Oxford We are SO lucky to live near the beautiful city of Oxford! Oxford, known as “The City of Dreaming Spires”, is famous all over the world for it’s University and it’s place in history. For over 800 years, it has been home to royalty and scholars, and since the 9th century an established town, although people are known to have lived in the area for thousands of years. The Twyford Pantry Welcome back to The Twyford Pantry – the foodie section of the magazine for all you food lovers out there! Thank you to those of you who have given me lovely feedback on the section last month, glad you enjoyed reading it and cooking the recipes. For those of you who missed the recipes in last month’s issue, visit www.communitycontact.co.uk where they will all be kept in the recipe file. You can also find them on The Twyford Pantry facebook page. This month, from a foodie point of view, we’re entering chocolate lover’s heaven as we celebrate Easter. It’s often a time to entertain and cook special meals, so I’ve included a lovely easy recipe for Garlic Roast Lamb with Hotpot Potatoes to put in the oven while you relax with your family and guests. If fish is more to your liking, you can try the Roasted Salmon with Lemon and Herbs which can be prepared a few hours beforehand giving you more time for other things. Either way, you’ll want to finish off the meal with
Garlic Roast Lamb with Hotpot Potatoes (serves 8)
• 1.8kg part-boned leg of lamb • 5 garlic cloves, sliced • a few rosemary sprigs • a few thyme sprigs, plus a few extra to serve • 50g butter • 2 large onions, thinly sliced • 400g pack diced mutton or lamb shoulder, finely chopped • 2kg large potatoes, such as King Edwards, thinly sliced • 300g carrots, sliced at an angle • 3 tbsp plain flour • 700ml lamb or beef stock, plus 450ml (optional) • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce Heat oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5. Pierce the skin and flesh of the lamb in several places and stuff each piercing with a slice of garlic, using 3-4 of the cloves, and a few leaves of rosemary. Stuff some more inside the lamb, with some thyme, where the bone has come

something delicious, if a little naughty, so try the Hot Cross Bread and Butter Pudding which is both easy and a way of using up old stale hot cross buns. It’s good to get the kids involved too. The Mini Egg Rocky Roads will keep them busy for a while and provide everyone with a treat to enjoy at any time. from. Put in a roasting tin, season well and cover with foil. Melt half the butter in a large frying pan. Fry the onions, stirring frequently, until softened and golden. Tip into a second large roasting tin. Cook the chopped mutton or lamb in the pan until brown. Add to the onions in the tin, and toss with the potatoes, carrots, remaining garlic and chopped herbs, 2 tbsp of the flour and some seasoning. Pour the stock into the frying pan, then add the Worcestershire sauce and the remaining butter. When melted and boiling, pour over the potatoes, cover with foil and bake with the lamb for approximately 1 hr. Uncover both the lamb and the hotpot, and cook for 45 mins more until the potatoes are golden and cooked all the way through. Allow the lamb to rest for at least 15 mins before carving (put onto a hot serving tray and cover with foil and a towel on top to keep warm). Leave the potatoes in the oven (covered if starting to brown too much) until ready to serve. Drain the fat from the lamb’s roasting tin, reserving the juices. Put the tin on the heat and stir in the remaining flour. Pour in 450ml boiling water or stock and stir until thickened to a gravy. Divide the hotpot into 8 and put onto warmed plates. Carve the lamb into thick slices and place on top, then spoon round a little gravy. Serve with your choice of vegetables.

Roasted Salmon with Lemon and Herbs (serves 6-8)
• 1 x 2kg/4lb 8oz salmon, filleted to give two sides, skin on (or 2 sides of salmon) • 1 lemon, sliced • good handful mixed herbs such as parsley, dill, chervil or tarragon • 2 bay leaves • 1-2 shallots, thinly sliced • splash white wine Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Sit one of the salmon fillets, skin-side down, on a large sheet of foil or baking parchment. Scatter with the lemon slices, herbs, shallots and seasoning, then sit the second fillet on top – skin-side up. Tie in 2-3 places with string to secure, splash with wine and fold up the foil or paper to seal. This stage can be chilled for up to 3 hrs.
Mini Egg Rocky Roads
• 400 g smooth white chocolate, broken into pieces • 100 g sweetmeal digestives, broken into small pieces • 150 g mini marshmallows • 100 g mini eggs Line an 18cm x 18cm cake tin with clingfilm. Put the chocolate in a large heatproof bowl and place over a pan of simmering water (make sure it’s not touching the water). Stir until the chocolate is completely melted.
Remove the bowl from the heat and stir in the broken digestives, mini marshmallows and most of the mini eggs – keep some aside to decorate. Pour the chocolate mixture into the prepared tin and smooth the top with a buttered knife. Place on a baking sheet and bake for 50 mins-1 Scatter over the reserved mini eggs – press them hr until the salmon is cooked through – check by in with the back of a spoon. Chill in the fridge for poking a knife into the fillets and making sure the 2-3 hours. When set, cut into 25 small squares. flesh flakes easily. The salmon is ready to serve with either boiled new potatoes and salad, or For The Hot Cross Bread and Butter fresh steamed vegetables.

IN YOUR GARDEN
Topical advice from Buckingham Garden Centre’s, Chris Day
Longer and warmer days is a sure sign that spring is in the air and there’s no time to lose to get your garden colourful and productive this season. Plant summer-flowering bulbs and corms as soon as the soil can be worked easily and the fear of the worst frosts have passed. Popular favourites such as Dahlias, Gladioli and Lilies can be established where you want them to flower. Remember you can also grow lilies in pots. I like to
layer them, planting 3-5 bulbs per layer over 2-3 layers in a 60cm (2ft) diameter pot. Use gritty multi-purpose compost with additional drainage at the base and do keep them well watered and fed. Start feeding from late May onwards until after flowering to keep the show going.
Now the soil is beginning to warm up we can start thinking about getting out planting the likes of Asparagus crowns, Shallots, Onion sets, Jerusalem Artichokes, Ginger, Horseradish, Early Potatoes and Rhubarb crowns. You can warm up the soil further by laying some polythene or landscape fabric 7- 10 days before the intended planting

Open the greenhouse or conservatory doors and vents on warm days to allow good air circulation and to keep the temperature balanced. As days warm up, damp down mid-morning and early afternoon to help improve the immediate atmosphere. Think of new ways to add height to the garden this summer – either structurally using arches, obelisks and even bamboo wigwams planted with your favourite variety or colour of sweet
peas, or simply by growing climbing French Beans or Runner Beans. More permanent structures would look good clothed in twinning toughies such as evergreen Honeysuckle, large-flowered hybrid Clematis, Roses and Wisteria. Make sure they are given a flying start by preparing the soil well beforehand and aim to keep the plants well watered through dry spells to help establishment.

Happy Easter Eating Easter is probably the largest
confectionary giving holiday in the UK (next to Halloween of course). It’s hard not to miss the rows of branded eggs in every shop and supermarket attempting to lead us astray. However, whilst these treats look yummy, it’s important to remember that your long term goals are a priority over what is essentially one day. That’s why the SML Diet team have come up with some fantastic tips to help you stay on track with your slimming for summer! This is a must read guide that we hope will take you through the next few days and beyond. REMIND YOURSELF WHY YOU WANT TO LOSE WEIGHT IN THE FIRST PLACE Pop piccys up around the house (even in the sweet cupboard) so when you feel tempted you have that strong willed note urging you why you started your diet in the first place. Recall those feelings you had when you first started losing weight - how unhappy you were, what you felt like (sluggish, lethargic maybe?) Now imagine how you’ll feel if you go off plan and eat that Easter something. Remember... it may taste nice but that taste is temporary, afterwards you’ll probably have the guilt induced feelings. DON’T START BUYING FOOD TOO EARLY The shops have been lined with Easter treats for months now. In fact I remember popping into a supermarket

not long after new year and seeing a certain brand of chocolate eggs staring back at me. Supermarkets/ confectioners know it’s a busy and profitable time of year, that’s why they are filled with the offers for months on end. How many times have we gone down that Easter egg aisle and seen an offer and thought, I’ll hide it in the cupboard until Easter? And now how many times have those eggs actually made it until Easter? If like many people you have children and need to start buying their ‘treats’, stick to your guns on what is for you and what is for the children. Boundaries, boundaries, boundaries. Now that’s a word not heard enough when it comes to restraint. BUY YOURSELF AN EASTER TREAT Make sure it isn’t food related. Maybe go out shopping and buy an outfit that you think would look fabulous on you when you have reached your target. Treat yourself to some nice perfume or make up. Something that will make you feel like a new you when you pop it on. DON’T FEEL LEFT OUT Just because you are dieting, it doesn’t mean you have to miss out. Remember attitude is an important tool. If you approach Easter weekend thinking that you are missing out and what a shame it is that you are dieting (feeling very hard done by), you are more likely to eat off plan and shun your diet for that

APRIL - MAY 2015 weekend. However, if your approach is one of those that it’s only 1 weekend for the rest of your life, you can celebrate next year, you can have your Easter treats, then you are more likely to stay strong and positive.
Positive attitude = Positive results! DO THE MATH Whilst dieting, you are probably counting your calories and carbs eaten on an average day. Well hows this for some statistics?! • • •
The Average hot cross bun contains a whopping 208 calories A cadburys crème egg contains 183 calories A hollow milk chocolate egg (100g) contains (wait for it....) 538 calories!!!!
Last but not least, a lot of us normally eat a Sunday roast over the Easter weekend. The average roast contains 956 calories Where as, if you stick to your SML diet plans, you’ll be consuming on average 700 calories (that’s including allowed snacks). The difference there is an incredible 1002 calories. When you think it only takes us 3500 calories to put on 1lb it soon adds up. I know which Easter plan I’d rather choose.... Springtime Safety Tips For Dog Owners Springtime can sometimes bring an increased number of cases to vetinary emergency clinics. Bright sunny days mean that people are out and about with their pets and it is much more common to see more road traffic accidents, walking injuries, dog fight injuries, allergic reactions and occasionally cases of heat stroke. Here are some things to be vigilant for at this time of year:

Remember that chocolate contains a stimulant called theobromine (a bit like caffeine) that is poisonous to dogs, and hot-cross buns contain raisins, which can cause renal failure in dogs. Spring plants and flowers Watch out for poisonous plants. Species common at this time of year include lilies, daffodils, spring bulbs and azaleas. If you notice any signs of poisoning such as excessive salivation, vomiting, diarrhoea, appearing ‘drunk’ or even collapsing – then contact your vet immediately. Bugs Make sure your dog is up to date with his vaccinations, flea and tick medications as this is the time of year fleas and ticks start to increase in number.

With the darker days of Winter starting to brighten and the hope of warmer days ahead the Spring term at Twyford C of E School is now well underway. We kicked off the start of term with a “Big Write” themed around a “Winter Wonderland” and this prompted the children’s imaginations to produce some wonderful work. We regularly hold “Big Write” sessions in school with whole school themes once or twice a term to really inspire and excite the children’s work. Our second whole school theme will be “Desert Island” and we’re looking forward to seeing the work that this produces. Our Key Stage One classroom has been transformed into a Rainforest this term and the children from Years 1 and 2 also visited the Living Rainforest at Newbury to see for themselves the plants and animals that live in rainforests in different parts of the world. The Living Rainforest is well worth a visit over the school holidays if you’re looking for a fun and educational activity. http://www.livingrainforest.org/ The end of January saw the launch of Film Club with the support of our PTFA. This is a project that the British Film Institute have introduced to bring films into schools and the children not only get to watch but also to review, analyse and even critique the films. This is a fantastic launch pad for introducing children to film, as well as boosting literacy, critical thinking and even filmmaking skills. One very exciting development at Twyford this term has been the introduction of a hot meal service at lunchtimes. This has been a real challenge to introduce, with issues regarding our relatively small numbers of children and rural setting. We are thrilled that it is now up and running and the children have really been enjoying the section of meals and desserts! Our School Council will be supporting Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day with a dress in red day and we are also dressing up on World Book Day as characters from our favourite books. We’ll be finishing the term with our Easter Egg Hunt and no doubt a special visit from our very own Easter Bunny. If you are interested in your child joining our school please contact us to arrange an informal visit.

Go to the woods
Head for the woods and make Easter egg hunts even more exciting in the great outdoors. Hide little Easter eggs or treats all around. You can use clues to lead them from one egg to the next or simply let them roam free and collect as many eggs as possible.
Active treasure hunt
Set up different ‘activity posts’ around the garden or park, then ask the children to complete various physical challenges before they start searching for more eggs. They could include star jumps, running up and down a path, doing a silly dance..
Colour coded hunt
Wrap little eggs and treats in different coloured tissue paper and then give each child a colour. Hide the treats all round the house, garden or park and the children must hunt them - only taking treats in their colour to pop in their baskets.
Give us a clue
Treasure hunts with clues are ideal for older children and provide a great way to harness their imagination and concentration. Create rhyming clues that take them from one hiding place to another until they find their eggs.
Pirate treasure hunt
Why not mix things up a bit with a pirate theme to grab their attention? Lay out a special map on the ground and let them use it to find the ‘hidden treasure’. You could even make a treasure map to lead the children to their bounty.
