The White House hosts an Easter Egg Roll on the front lawn each year. This tradition was started by President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1878.

I have recently started making outfits for ice skating, using stretch materials and specialist equipment. Also using diamantés – lots of diamantés! These Lycra or Spandex stretch materials are great for any sports where you need the flexibility but need to make an impact. For example: Ice and Roller Skating; Cheerleading; Gymnastics; Dance and Stage shows. I alter, re-model and repair items, too. Buckingham Literary Festival Introduces 2018 Festival Line Up Following the success of the 2017 Buckingham Literary Festival, the line-up for 2018 has been announced and boasts some of the biggest names in literature and politics. The three day event, which takes place from Thursday 14 June to Sunday 17 June 2018, will bring an exciting mix of talks, discussions and entertainment to the beautiful market town of Buckingham. Booker prize winner Ben Okri will be discussing his latest poetry compilation, The Poetry of Protest, Lady Antonia Fraser will be in conversation with Antony Seldon with her new book, The King and The Catholics and satirist Craig Brown will be talking about his latest book, Ma’am Darling: 99 Glimpses of Princess Margaret. From the world of politics will be Lord Adonis, whose most recent book, 5 days in May charts the creation of the coalition out of the dust of the Labour general election campaign as well as John Bercow MP and former MP and last Governor of Hong Kong, Chris Patten. There will be the opportunity for the audience to question the authors, meet them in person and get their books signed. Events will be held throughout the town at venues including the Villiers Hotel, the Radcliffe Centre and Buckingham Library. Topical advice from Buckingham Garden Centre’s, Chris Day
That amazing American comedian, the late Robin Williams once said: ‘Spring is nature’s way of saying, ‘Let’s party!’ and we’d have to agree! The birds are nesting, the bees are buzzing and yes, the slugs are stirring, spring has definitely sprung! NEW ARRIVALS Now is a great time to establish evergreen trees (including Thuja, pictured) and shrubs. The combination of warming soils after the very cold spell of weather in early March and showery weather is good for the re-establishment process, especially the likes of larger evergreen hedging and conifers. If planting larger specimens do make sure the soil is well improved working in generous amounts of compost or well-rotted manure to help improve the structure and moistureretention of the soil. Don’t skimp on applying mulches around the base of your newly planted plants to help maintain a moist growing medium. ROSE HEALTH Start spraying roses - opt for either Rose Clear Ultra or Bayer Multirose. Both of these systemic insecticide/fungicide treatments contain the active fungicide based on Tebuconazole. If you use the Multirose product you can spray up to six times through the growing season whereas Rose Clear Ultra is only four times – this may be useful to know and for best results it is advisable to start early and spray often for those rose bushes particularly prone to Blackspot and Powdery Mildew. Always read the instructions carefully on all chemicals before use. SUMMER FLOWERS Once we are into late March you can start direct sowing undercover of those half-hardy annuals – Cosmos (pictured in flower), Nicotiana, Snapdragons and Nasturtiums amongst others. The vagaries of the British climate can make sowing direct a hit and miss affair in cold springs. It is possible to sow most annuals in trays in early March under unheated glass, such as an unheated greenhouse or windowsill. Thinly scatter the seeds, and then prick them out, once they have a pair of true leaves as well as round seeded cotyledon (or seed leaves) into 3in, or 9cm pots, and plant them out in late May, or you can prick them out into modular 15cm x 10cm (6in x 4in) trays and grow them on under glass until they root through the module. Handle the small seedlings by their two first true leaves, not the stems. This part of the process takes four weeks on average. Plant out once the fear of frosts has passed in late May.

APRIL - MAY 2018 MUST-DO’S Feed bare soil between your existing plants with general-purpose fertiliser such as Vitax Q4 and dose acid-loving Rhododendrons and Camellias with Maxicrop Sequestered Iron to help improve overall health and flowering ability. Soft fruits, including Blackberries, Loganberries and Blackcurrants will benefit from a high-nitrogen feed such as Sulphate of Ammonia. Apply 35g/ sq. m (1¼ oz/sq. yd) as a top dressing to the soil surface and work into the soil well. Stake your perennials before it’s too late. You can use the likes of Link Stake supports which means the mesh grid is simply lifted as the plants grow, perfect for Delphiniums and Lupins. Twiggy sticks allow plants to clamber through and often look more naturalistic in the border, pictured showing a developing Coreopsis plant. Create attractive willow or hazel structures as focal points in the garden, however you’ll need to be quick to source the plant material. Prune the previous season’s flowered shoots of Hydrangeas and Winter Jasmine to stimulate strong productive growth. Pinch-out Fuchsia, Sweet Peas and Pelargoniums to help encourage bushiness and heavier flowering. Deadhead early flowering primulas as early as possible, as they tend to crossbreed very easily. Sow Garden Peas, Broad Beans, Brassicas, Leeks, root veg, Spinach, Chicory, Swiss Chard, salad and hardy herbs. Start tender vegetables (Cucumbers, Peppers and Tomatoes). Light and warmth are essential with those protected crops so do watch the weather and make sure they can be given good frost protection. Pot them up as soon as they are large enough to handle into a 4in (10cm) pots using a Multi-Purpose Compost. Plant Jerusalem Artichokes, Rhubarb and Asparagus crowns in well prepared soil warmed by the spring sunshine. Tackle the weeding: if you defeat them in April and May, some will give up, and you can take it easier in June. Finally, it’s a good time to clean the glass in your greenhouse to make the most of the increasing light levels. Use Agralan Citrox Greenhouse Disinfectant for giving the greenhouse a full clean up, including the staging, tools, pots, seed trays and capillary matting. There is no need to remove plants when applying this disinfectant. BULB COLOUR Fill pots with glamorous summer-flowering bulbs including Liliums (pictured, Lily ‘Stargazer’), compact Dahlias and Gladioli. You can successfully ‘lasagne plant’ your Lily and Gladioli corms in two or three layers of compost in your deep patio pots. Space the bulbs out equally in groups of three or five so they are not touching and allow 3-4in (8-10cm) between the layers to give the plants plenty of room to To advertise call 07882 194830 or visit www.communitycontact.co.uk

If you are planning to grow Tuberous Begonias make sure you start them off in the warmth of a sunny windowsill or frostfree greenhouse. Pendulous Begonias are always best started off in small pots, says 10cm (4in) so they can get a head start before being moved on into hanging baskets or windowboxes. Use a multipurpose compost for all your bulb growing and do make sure there is sufficient crocking in those larger pots where larger numbers of bulbs are going to be planted. LAWNS Mow the lawn fortnightly, more if the grass is romping away. Only ever reduce the height by a third to avoid scalping the lawn. Gradually lower the cutting height from 1.5in (4cm) to half an inch (1cm) as the season moves on. Rake out moss and uproot problem weeds. If the moss defeats the handson approach, then it would be advisable to apply some EverGreen® Mosskill with Lawn Food to your sward. Apply when the weather is fair, the soil is moist, the grass is dry and frost free - do not apply during prolonged dry periods, frost, or if heavy rain is imminent. The Twyford Pantry Welcome to Spring when we start seeing the better weather, when our gardens come alive, there are lots of lovely fresh ingredients coming into season and chocolate becomes nearly everyone’s best friend again!! Easter is a wonderful time of year for those that celebrate it – another reason for families to get together, children can make Easter treats, those that do can decorate their houses (I love Easter decorations!) and we can enjoy a long weekend being creative in the kitchen. April/May is Asparagus season so it would be rude not to choose a recipe with this beautiful vegetable so I’ve

included a tasty side dish of Leeks, Peas and Asparagus to accompany Tom Kerridge’s Hay Baked Stuffed Leg of Lamb (which can be prepared a day ahead to make lift easier), but it can also be used with a fish or vegetarian main course. Finally Easter wouldn’t be Easter without a chocolate treat so enjoy making (and eating!) the Golden Egg Baked Chocolate Tart which again can be made ahead. APRIL - MAY 2018 1 lemon, zested 70g fresh breadcrumbs 1½ kg leg of lamb, part tunnel-boned, shank still attached (ask your butcher to do this for you) 2 bunches rosemary 1 bunch thyme 100g hay, toasted (for 8-10 mins at 160C/140C fan/ gas 3, optional) 500ml lamb or chicken stock 2 tbsp olive oil
Ingredients For the tart case (or save yourself the trouble and buy a ready made one!) 80g butter, softened 40g golden caster sugar 120g self raising flour
For the filling 75g butter 100g dark chocolate (70% cocoa) 75g golden caster sugar Heat oven to 190C/170C fan/ gas 5. 50g plain flour 4 large eggs, beaten 2 x 80g bags of Galaxy Golden Eggs Method... Cook the kale in boiling water until just wilted, then crème fraîche, to serve refresh in iced water. Drain and carefully squeeze the excess water from the kale, then roughly chop. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/ gas 4. Tip into a mixing bowl, stir in the garlic, anchovies, zest and breadcrumbs, and season (add lots of Method... pepper).
