the benefits of swimming early with your baby Your baby was totally immersed in fluid in the womb for nine months so it seems natural that they have an affinity with water. Whether it is in the bath, at the
pool or playing in a paddling pool, water holds a fascination for young children
and it is one place where they can be free to enjoy their full range and scope of movement without being tied down by gravity. So, they develop from day 1! Whether you are holding your child or they
are moving independently, in water they have
freedom to move; your role is to support them
rather than holding them tightly. Swimming with your baby is as much of a new experience for
you as your baby. However, we know this can be an anxious time for you. The important thing to
think about is that your baby does not know any
different – so, ask questions, voice any concerns, talk to your baby at all times, relax and enjoy the whole experience and learn together and learn together.
All babies cry; crying is communicating and
might just be a hungry cry, I’m tired or I would like your attention so please interact with me!
Babies may cry in the pool or in the bath but they also cry on dry land too. Be prepared to try new experiences more than once; quite often you
may feel more relaxed because you know what
you are doing and your baby will pick up on this and relax too.

There are so many good experiences for you
both in a pool. Water is supportive so you can
float and relax with your baby. Babies will kick in
water because they can feel it which strengthens their leg muscles ready for crawling and walking. You can practise spatial skills which helps with rolling and standing up and allowing them to taste the water leads to bubble blowing and
thus, control of their breath. This is a place where you can spend time together uninterrupted by
technology, where the nearly skin to skin contact promotes and enhances bonding. For toddlers it is a place of imagination to live being a shark or mermaid.
So, there is so much more to taking your baby swimming. On the one hand baby swimming
is the starting point for the all the strokes they
will learn if they want to swim and on the other, it provides you and your baby the chance to
explore the new, yet familiar medium of water.
Swimming is a life skill and will open up the world of other water activities as your child grows. It
also promotes confidence and independence

Archie and George both went to Waterbabies in Buckingham and it was always our favourite day of the week whilst on maternity leave! It gave both of my boys so much confidence in the water. They could swim underwater and swim independently (with the aid of a float) at just 2 years old! The games and the songs are so much fun, and the water safety element was very important to me. They teach babies exactly what to do, should they fall in the water by accident. Would thoroughly recommend!

WHY I LOVE STORY TELLING Back in 2001 I was driving home from a football match with my grandfather – Don Watts (who some of you may remember as a Buckingham based plumber!). He chose our journey to reveal his experiences while carrying out National Service in Malaya. We went on to talk about his experiences living in the jungle, his years racing stock cars, how he happened across a friend who taught him how to fly a hot air balloon and spending time living in South Africa. These were revelations, I knew Don as just a humble grafter, born and bred in Buckingham who loved football and motorsport. He passed away less than a year later and only when I had two young children of my own did I really regret having not made some sort of recording Don’s life stories. With the benefit of modern recording and editing technology, it is now so much easier to sit down and record an audio interview. We are able to track our family tree through websites like Ancestry, Genealogy and Find My Past to discover records of our ancestors dating back hundreds of years. My aim for this service is to provide substance to this precious family history, so your story can be heard for generations to come.

SO, HOW MUCH PROTEIN DO I NEED?

If we are to believe all the marketing hype around protein intake then the answer is ‘loads!’ With the promise of bigger muscles and stronger bodies if we buy the next protein shake or bar, it’s difficult to ignore the messaging and there’s no doubt that protein is critical for every cell in our body. It helps build nails, hair, bones and muscles. It can also help you feel fuller longer than eating foods without protein. And, unlike nutrients that are found only in a few foods, protein is found in lots of them! But, do we really need to supplement our protein intake? Well, it depends, so here are some simple guidelines to help you figure out whether or not you need to include more protein in your diet and if you do, where you should get it from! The average amount of protein we need in a day is somewhere around 50-60g per day – or approximately 0.8-1.1 grams per kilogram of body weight depending on whether you’re male or female. If you ate two eggs for breakfast you already have about 14 grams of protein. Add a lunch or dinner of chicken, rice and broccoli, and you are already over the recommended 50 grams. Even if you exercise ‘moderately’ then you still probably don’t require anymore.
When do I need more protein?
Anytime you’re in an ‘anabolic state’ or building muscle, such as if you’re an extreme endurance athlete, training for a marathon, or you’re a body builder. Extreme athletes expend lots of energy breaking down and repairing and building muscles. Protein can give them the edge they need to speed along that process. Vegans can benefit from protein supplements since they do not eat animal-based protein sources like meat, dairy or eggs. And, for someone always on-the-go who may not have time for a meal, a protein snack bar can be a good option for occasional meal replacement. If you are recovering from surgery or an injury you can also benefit from extra protein. If you are around 60 years old and above, your muscles start to break down and as well as this, the body’s ability to break down protein is reduced so our protein needs increase.
Can I overdo protein? Some research suggests that too much protein can cause nausea, cramps, headaches, fatigue and bloating. Dehydration can also be a risk when you eat too much protein. If you do increase your protein intake, try to also also increase your fluids. There have been some indications that extra protein may make the kidneys work harder, which could be an issue for those with a history of kidney disease or kidney stones.

Where should I get my extra protein from?
If you believe you need more protein in your diet then whole foods are always going to be the healthiest and most effective way to do this. Not all supplements, whether in the form of powders, bars or supplements are created equal and can include other sugars, additives, fillers and in some cases caffeine etc., so read the list of ingredients carefully. As a general rule, less is more when it comes to choosing a good quality protein supplement. Adding high protein foods like eggs and meat products to your diet can be beneficial but its worth noting that proteins can be found in lots of plants sources too. Quinoa, chickpeas, lentil and beans, nuts and tofa/tempeh are all great sources!

September in The Garden THE BEST TIME OF THE YEAR! Most people love the heat of the Summer or early Spring blooms but I have always loved the late Summer and Early Autumn weather the best. It is also my favourite time in the garden. September and October can bring some beautiful days with intense heat and sunshine, but there is definitely a feel of Autumn in the air. The plants are beginning to set seed and deadheading and harvesting is a must to keep everything at its best. Now is a good time to prune your climbing and rambling roses. If you have repeat flowering varieties then wait until they have finished blooming but the single flowering ones can be done now. My roses have been so rampant this year that I’m looking forward to taming them and gaining some control. Biennials need to be planted out now, they will be able to get their roots down before the weather turns cold. It’s a good idea to pinch out the tops of Wallflowers to encourage bushier growth. Dahlia are still going strong so keep deadheading and picking them right up until the first frosts. I think these blooms are the star of the late Summer garden. Their jewel colours shine out, even on a dull day.

I have always loved being outside and noticing the wildlife that plants and flowers bring into our gardens. As a youth I was much happier surrounded by my pets and plants than anything else, this has never changed. Now at the age of 40 I think I’m where I’m meant to be; surrounded once again by plants and pets. For the last 14 years I have been a florist, I have owned my own shop, been studio based and freelanced for some amazing florists,and worked at amazing venues all over the country. During the last 5 years I have had the space to grow my own flowers, often adding the perfect bloom into my floral displays. Dig up and divide perennial plants. Doing this now will mean you will double or even triple your plant numbers for next year. The soil is lovely and warm so the plants will have time to put down roots for a fabulous display next Summer. Enjoy! The colours of the leaves will soon start to turn the most fabulous colours of oranges, reds and browns and it won’t be long until you are digging out your favourite jumper. This to me is a magic time and I love to sit and take it all in with a cup of tea, this time in the garden really is a total dream and I shall enjoy it whilst assessing my 2021 garden triumphs and failures and plan for a bigger and better display next year.
TIME TO GET ORGANISED While the days and evenings are still long and warm enough to enjoy being outside, I also turn my attention to my greenhouse and shed. The time for Autumn sowing is upon us and for this, organisation is the key. I make sure all of my pots and seed trays are washed and stacked where I need them to be and any broken pots are taken out of use. I buy my peat free potting compost, I find that Preston Bissett Garden Centre has the best selection round here, they can normally tempt me

to a new plant or two as well. I sweep out the shed and clean up my tools, clear my potting benches and really get ready for a good seed sowing session.

This is always an odd time of year to think ahead for as it’s a crossover of some amazing seasonal fruits and veggies but also a time when who knows what the weather will do so best combine the two! Having (hopefully) reached a point with Lockdown well behind us, it is fair to say the

it’s time to repair the damage…for those feeling inclined! Having formed a slightly unhealthy relationship with food over the last 12 months, I took the plunge. back in July. to join Slimming World and its going great (at time of printing at least). Being a self-confessed Foodie I am pleasantly surprised how unlike a diet it feels and how much food can still be enjoyed, savoured, and indulged in. Good luck to anyone who is also on their own journey to healthier times, whether it be around the waistline with food choice changes, mentally of generally upping the fitness levels. So, with that in mind, I have chosen 3 yummy recipes using seasonal healthier choice ingredients and to cover both seasons. Figs will be at their best in early Autumn so pair them simply with creamy Mozzarella for an easy starter or salad/side dish. I’ve included a warming Vegan curry dish for when the weather cools down and delicious parsnips start coming into their own. Lastly, my SW journey has introduced me to the Pinch of Nom books…wow! As a tribute, and for you to enjoy the last of the strawberries, I have included the recipe that started them off…Cheesecake Stuffed Strawberries, again I say…Wow! Ingredients
225g buffalo mozzarella or fresh mozzarella 225p ripe fresh figs, cut into quarters Torn basil leaves (for serving) Coarsely ground black pepper Flaky sea salt Olive oil (for drizzling)

Method Tear mozzarella into medium pieces and arrange on a platter. Tuck figs around cheese and scatter basil over top. Season with pepper and lots of salt. Drizzle generously with oil. Easy peasy but oh so tasty.

Chickpea and Roasted Parsnip Curry (serves 4)
Cheesecake Stuffed Strawberries (makes 24) (Gluten Free if GF biscuit used)
Ingredients
4 large parsnips (about 500g) cut into batons 2 tbsp vegetable oil or sunflower oil 2 tsp cumin seeds 1 onion Chopped bunch coriander, leaves picked, and stalks very finely chopped 3 tbsp curry paste (as you prefer) this recipe uses Balti 2 x 400g cans chickpeas, drained 400ml coconut milk 2 limes, 1 juiced and 1 cut into wedges yogurt, rice or naan bread, to serve
Method Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Put the parsnips in a roasting tin and toss with half the oil, the cumin and some seasoning. Roast for 25-30 mins until softened. Heat the remaining oil in a pan. Cook the onion and coriander stalks for 15 mins, or until really soft and caramelising. Stir in the curry paste and cook for 1 min, then add the chickpeas and coconut milk. Simmer for 10 mins until the sauce reduces and clings to the chickpeas. Add the lime juice and season again to taste, if you like. Top with the parsnips, coriander leaves and lime wedges and serve with yogurt, rice or naan bread. source: www.bbcgoodfood.com
Ingredients 24 strawberries 120g Quark (found in the dairy chiller cabinet if you’ve never heard of it) 25g low fat cream cheese 50g granulated sweetener ½ tsp vanilla extract/paste 1 low calorie digestive biscuit (Can use GF)
Method Remove the tops of the strawberries and using a small sharp knife, cut out a cone shape inside the middle of each strawberry – you want a small hole in the middle (keep these bits to use separately in a smoothie, fruit salad, mashed in yoghurt, or Eton Mess!) Mix together the quark, cream cheese, sweetener and vanilla extract and beat until smooth. Fill a small freezer bag with the cream cheese mixture. Make sure you get all the mixture in one corner. Seal the bag and cut the corner. The hole should be quite small so you can pipe inside the strawberries. Squeeze the filling into each strawberry and sprinkle with digestive crumbs. Ready to serve and enjoy and at only 2 Slimming World syns each, I don’t mind if I do! source: www.pinchofnom.com
