Shop local this Christmas Why do we love shopping locally? Go into an independent local shop and you’ll find items that have been handpicked by people passionate about what they do. People who know where these items come from, and what makes them special. People who have a genuine interest in helping you find the perfect gift for that special someone. That is, to us, is what makes shopping locally so special (oh, and the opportunity to add in a pitstop with the odd cosy coffee, lunch or even G&T in the many independent eateries we have!). We thought we’d help show you what is available locally, so this Christmas Community Contact and Love Buckingham are collaborating to share just some of what our local shops have to offer. As well as the gift ideas featured on these pages, we’ll be showcasing even more of what the town and surrounding area has to offer on social media. So find and follow us at Love Buckingham and Community Contact on Facebook and Instagram to see lots more over the coming weeks. COMMUNITY CONTACT MAGAZINE IN THIS NEW REGULAR COLUMN, LOUISE LAMBERT-DAY, NATUROPATHIC NUTRITIONAL THERAPIST, HOMEOPATH AND OWNER OF PLACE EIGHT WELLNESS IN SWANBOURNE, BRINGS YOU TIPS TO HELP YOU ON YOUR HEALTH AND WELLNESS JOURNEY.
NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS ARE FLAWED... WHAT TO DO INSTEAD There are eight dimensions to wellness; physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, social, financial, environmental and occupational; a concept that Place Eight Wellness recognises within its name. As we approach the new year, many of us will make resolutions that fall within at least one of these dimensions, drawn by the promise of a ‘fresh start’. The problem is…well, resolutions just don’t work, with studies suggesting that one third fail in the first month. The reason? Bad habits take time to break and good ones take time to adopt; as long as 60+ days in fact before new behaviours become ‘automatic.’ The second reason is that we think of resolutions as ‘goals’…and often they are big goals; lose weight, get a promotion, save money. This comes with a lot of pressure and we can become overwhelmed by focusing on big changes down the road rather than on small changes here and now.
START WITH INTENTIONS IN THE HERE AND NOW Intentions are more forgiving than goals and acknowledge the effort and process, not just the result. If we start by making small, regular, daily,
14
weekly, monthly intentions they are more likely to become an ongoing lifetime practise rather than one huge ‘success’ or ‘fail’ destination. For example, we might have the goal of reducing stress by becoming an expert at meditation. Worthwhile but not easy, yet daily, our intention may be to sit for two minutes and pay attention to our breath. There is no such thing as bad meditation. If you choose to sit quietly, focussing on your intention, breath, or mantra then it’s a success. Whilst goals are always set in the future, intention is planted in the present. The future is full of unknowns and can therefore cause us anxiety. The present keeps us grounded. Setting an intention begins with mindfulness: Stop what you are doing. Take a second to check-in with yourself. Take a conscious breath to become present and grounded. Reset. Make a mindful choice about an intention for that day, week, or month. Ask yourself how you want to feel? (today, this week, or for something specific i.e, a project, event, or trip). What do you want to achieve? How will you know when you have this? What do you need to feel, think, see, or hear? What do you need to achieve this? What steps do you need to take?
CREATE A GOAL WITH INTENTION We do need goals to motivate and provide some order and meaning to our life. However, when combined with intention we benefit from both. We can move
Please mention Community Contact when responding to adverts
DECEMBER - JANUARY 2020 towards our future self but stay planted in our present self. This way it becomes as much about the process as the result and life doesn’t disappear whilst we are busy planning for the future. We are also more likely to succeed in the longer-term goal if the path
opportunities the new year brings. HAVE A HAPPY, HEALTHY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!
is sprinkled with smaller rewards or successes along the way. We know our goal is there, but we organise ourselves around gradual, smaller milestones and learn to enjoy the journey without getting too anxious about the destination.
STAY ON TRACK Goals with intention work but still require us to stay on course. The very disciplined can maybe get there on their own but most of us need accountability and support, either from friends and family or through a more formal group or coach. Whatever your resolution this year is, stay grounded in the present, and in the process, by balancing your long-term goals with daily intentions; a much more holistic and achievable way to embrace all the

LEIGHTON BUZZARD
To succeed in the global economy, Britain must continue to build on its strengths. The ‘hi-tec arc’ connecting Cambridge, Milton Keynes and Oxford could be the UK’s Silicon Valley – a world renowned centre for science, technology and innovation. This area is a national asset, that competes on the world stage – but only with an integrated strategy to deliver new homes, connectivity and job opportunities can it release its full potential. With all these changes to the local area including new infrastructure and housing projects bringing new roads, schools, health & leisure facilities and employment there is so much to take in and to know. The Wilkinson Partnership are at the forefront, knowing what plans are being discussed, understanding the strategies being considered, considering the governance and implementation concepts that will combine to deliver the potential growth of one million new homes across the region by 2050. If you own land and want to know more about what’s going on, then talk to us today. We’re acting on 1,000’s of acres of land across the region, with a brilliant track record of success.

The Twyford Pantry Time is a funny thing and something I have always struggled with, those that know me! As life goes on, I am more aware of how precious it is so where we can save ourselves time let’s do it. “Hacks” (or Top Tips as they were known back in the day) are shared everywhere to help us make life easier and often more fun with genius ideas so I have listed some of the current Christmas Hacks for you, some that can also be used all round. Plus I have included my all time favourite gammon ham recipe – courtesy of The Hairy Bikers. This together with the pretty Christmas Wreath Salad and a potato dish of your choosing would make a simple supper anytime over the festive period.
FESTIVE HONEY-GLAZED GAMMON – SERVES 10
However you prepare for Christmas – full on and super organised, a little bit here and there, last minute panics or decidedly against any kind of planning and just go with the flow – make sure you use your time how you want to and make the most of it with loved ones. If you have some spare to give to someone who might not have any loved ones, even better. Time is the best gift of all afterall, and remember to give some to yourself! Happy Christmas-time and wishing you all the best for 2020 and whatever it brings both in the kitchen and out! Love Tina xx with cold water and bring to the boil over a high heat. Drain the water from the saucepan, add fresh cold water, the onions, carrots, celery, bay and peppercorns and bring to the boil once more. Reduce the heat, cover with a lid and simmer the gammon and vegetables gently for 20 minutes per 500g/1lb 2oz. (If your pan is not quite large enough to cover the joint completely, turn the gammon over halfway through the cooking time.) Remove the gammon from the water and set aside to cool for 15 minutes. (The cooking liquid can be strained and reserved for making soup for another time.)
Ingredients : For the gammon 2kg/4lb 8oz unsmoked boneless gammon joint, tied 2 onions, halved 2 carrots, unpeeled, cut into 5cm/2in pieces 2 celery stalks, cut into 5cm/2in pieces 4 bay leaves 12 black peppercorns small handful cloves For the glaze: 4 tbsp runny honey 4 tbsp English mustard Method Place the gammon joint into a large saucepan, cover
42
Preheat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6 and line a large roasting tin with kitchen foil. Use a small knife to remove the rind from the gammon joint, leaving as much of the fat intact as possible. Score the fat in a diamond pattern, and push a clove into the centre of each ‘X’. Place the gammon into the foil-lined roasting tray, ensuring that the sides of the foil come halfway up the joint to contain any roasting juices. For the glaze, mix the honey and mustard together and brush half of it evenly over the gammon, including one side of the joint. Roast in the centre of the oven for 10 minutes, then take the joint out and brush the top

DECEMBER - JANUARY 2020 and remaining side with the rest of the glaze. Return the gammon to the oven for a further 10– 15 minutes, rotating the tin so that the opposite side of the gammon faces the back of the oven. The gammon is ready when the fat on top is glossy and golden brown. Cover loosely with foil if the top begins to look too brown. Remove the gammon from the oven and set aside to rest for 15 minutes before carving. source: The Hairy Bikers Christmas Party
CHRISTMAS WREATH SALAD SERVES 6
Scatter over the pomegranate seeds and toasted, cooled walnuts. Place bowl of dressing in middle of wreath and serve with sliced baguette, if you like. source: Good Housekeeping/country Living Christmas 2019
A SACK FULL OF CHRISTMAS HACKS • Wrap Christmas lights around a coat hanger or cardboard tube to save getting tangled. • Use 2 different size lights on the tree to give it more impact. • When Christmas is over cut up the pictures on your Christmas cards to make next year’s gift tags. • Use an upside down ‘Command Strip’ hook on the back of your door to hang your wreath on the front. • Use a rubber-ended pencil and stamp pad on brown paper to make effective spotted wrapping paper. • Make roast potatoes in advance – par boil, toss in fat and freeze. Can be cooked from frozen. • Create a quick wreath by wrapping a scarf around wreath frame and tie with ribbon.
Ingredients 75 g (3oz) walnut pieces 130g bag mixed green salad leaves 3 pears, peeled, cored and sliced 250 g (9oz) blue cheese, crumbled 50 g (2oz) pomegranate seeds baguette, to serve (optional)
• Make ‘elf donuts’ by decorating Cheerios cereal. • Make stuffing balls or pigs in blankets and freeze before the big day. • Freeze leftover Turkey in some gravy to help keep it moist – maximum 3 months. • Put a slice of shop bought white bread with your homemade bakes to keep them moist.
For the dressing 3 tbsp. white wine vinegar 1 tbsp. runny honey 1 tsp. wholegrain mustard 2 tbsp. olive oil
• Chill wine/fizz quickly by immersing in ice water and handful of salt for about 20 mins or wrap in damp tea towel in freezer.
Method Heat a large dry frying pan, toast walnut pieces for 3-5min, shaking pan often, or until the walnuts smell toasted. Tip into a bowl and set aside to cool. In a small serving bowl, whisk the dressing ingredients with some salt and freshly ground black pepper. Set aside. On a large board or platter, arrange salad leaves in a round wreath shape. Dot over pear slices and blue cheese.
• Always win at cracker pulling by holding your end lower, pull slowly with minimum twisting…winner!
• Use a pizza wheel to cut up herbs. • Warm plates in your dishwasher on a quick cycle.
• Lost the nutcracker? Put 2 walnuts together in your hands, ridges overlapping and squeeze. • Keep turkey moist by draping over a piece of butter muslin soaked in melted butter (available from cookshops or online)

Lapland Travel Review Lapland is somewhere I have always wanted to travel to. Mostly because this is where Father Christmas lives, but I haven’t actually ever been to a snowy destination on holiday! I would love to try out snowmobiles, go tobogganing on thick snow and even go in a real sleigh! But one of my all time must sees is to see the Northern Lights – and apparently Lapland is one of the best places to see them.
Trying to find holiday in Lapland is a whole new story as there are so many tours to choose from. The trick is to examine every detail of the itinerary, from how long you spend with Santa, which activities are included and how the gifts are organised. Before unveiling the idea to your children, bear in mind that these holidays can be expensive. Expect to pay at least £2,000 for
46
a family of four on a two- or three-night stay in a log cabin or hotel, including flights, transfers and meals. Specialist tour operators offering private meetings with Father Christmas and a more authentic experience generally base their itineraries in more remote parts of the region. Alongside the obligatory visit to Father Christmas, you can find Christmas-themed packages that usually include a variety of snowbased activities (sleigh rides, snowmobiling) either included in the price or as an extra. Inghams (inghams.co.uk) has four-night Father Christmas breaks to Levi or Yllas, while Santa’s Lapland (santaslapland.com) uses familyfriendly hotels or log cabins near Saariselkä (Europe’s northernmost holiday resort). Try also Nordic Experience (nordicexperience.co.uk), Transun (transun.co.uk) and Canterbury Travel (santa-holidays.com).

DECEMBER - JANUARY 2020 Remember that the climate can be harsh. Throughout the seven-month winter, you can expect little more than five hours of sunlight with temperatures dropping well below freezing and sometimes as low as -20 to -40C. But during daylight hours the sun often shines, the air is still and very dry, so as long as you dress properly, the cold is perfectly bearable.
departure dates, free child places or for lastminute availability.
Facts • Lapland makes up about one third of Finland’s total area, and it’s a region, not a country. It covers northern Sweden, Finland, Norway and part of Russia’s Kola. Make sure your insurance covers you for winter sports - particularly riskier ones such as snowmobiling (if you decide to have a go) and, although operators will provide thermal over clothing, ensure you take plenty of warm layers.
• Peninsula. To put its size into perspective, Lapland is as big as Belgium, Holland and Switzerland all put together. • You’ll be going when daylight’s scarce, but in the summer, the sun sometimes never sets. For 73 days each year, the sun is visible round the clock. Want to witness these nights without darkness? Visit in June, when you can expect 21-24 hours of light a day. • The only real, official Santa lives in Lapland. • The number of reindeer in the province roughly equals that of people.
For the most competitive prices, look at the programmes offered by the big tour operators. Thomson (thomson.co.uk), Thomas Cook (thomascook.com), Monarch (monarch.co.uk) and Cosmos (cosmos.co.uk) offer Santa tours and often have deals available for specific
• Lapland is the best place to view the Northern Lights. Abisko National Park is regarded as one of the best places in the world to see this natural light show due to its prevailing winds, which means that cloud rarely forms - and the skies are kept clear.

WINTER DOG CARE - 10 TIPS TO KEEP YOUR DOG SAFE 1. WRAP UP ON WALKS It may be cosy indoors, but your dog needs regular walks regardless of the weather. When out on walks it’s important to make sure your four-legged friends are wrapped up warm. Put a dog coat on them when you go out, especially if you have a fine-coated dog, such as a Greyhound or Staffie. 2. CHECK FOR SNOW BETWEEN THEIR TOES Check your dog’s paws and dry them thoroughly after they’ve been outside. This is especially important with longhaired dogs as they are prone to snow compacting between their toes and turning into ice balls which can prove very painful. If they are agreeable, you could trim the long hair between your dog’s toes to help prevent this. 3. CHECK FOR SALT AND GRIT BETWEEN THEIR TOES Clean their paws at the end of your walk as salt and grit from roads and pavements
can also get lodged between their toes. 4. KEEP THEM WARM AND DRY Dry off wet and muddy dogs after walks and make sure they have a cosy bed to return to which is away from any cold draughts. 5. KEEP THEM ACTIVE INDOORS Some dogs can be very reluctant to venture out into the cold. If this is the case, do not force them out but make sure you provide them with lots of toys for them to play and keep them occupied while indoors. 6. ADJUST THEIR FOOD IF NECESSARY If you do find that your dog is less active in the winter months, make sure you adjust the amount of food you give them accordingly to avoid weight gain. 7. MAKE SURE THEY HAVE GOOD RECALL Cold weather often brings reduced visibility in foggy or snowy weather conditions. If you’re letting them off
the lead, make sure your dog has good recall to avoid them getting lost and, as always, make sure their microchip details are up to date with your correct contact information. 8. MAKE THEM VISIBLE As the nights draw in earlier and the sun rises later, attach a small light to your dog’s collar so they can be seen when out on walks in reduced visibility. 9. NEVER LEAVE YOUR DOG IN THE CAR UNATTENDED Just as cars can become fatally hot in summer months, temperatures can drop very quickly in cold weather. Always take your dog with you rather than leaving them in the car for any length of time. 10. STAY AWAY FROM FROZEN LAKES AND RIVERS Keep your dog away from stretches of frozen water as it’s impossible to tell how secure the surface is. Keep them on a lead if you think they’ll be tempted to jump in.
