Just some of our clients' thoughts on our services below- read more at www.pc-help-4u.co.uk/testimonials “We were delighted some years ago to discover someone local that we could call upon to solve some problems with our desktop computer.. Since then PChelp4U have set up a laptop, an iPad and resolved an issue with a printer. Recently, following their advice, we finally had the old desktop replaced with a new one, this was all organised and set-up by them. We have always found Ben (and Matthew) to be helpful and courteous at all times. Any computer issues have been dealt with promptly and efficiently and we have no hesitation in wholeheartedly recommending PChelp4U.” - Annette & Mike Hulse, Winslow “Thanks to PChelp4U, my wife’s laptop and my PC have been brought up to date in terms of operating systems and spring cleaned of old unwanted and mostly unnecessary software, which has enabled them to operate quicker and easier (no more pulling our hair out waiting for responses) than previously, therefore putting off the purchase of replacement hardware. The service was prompt, very effective, efficient and reasonably priced.” - Mike & Linda Hayward, Buckingham “Very happy with the work that PChelp4U did for us. They responded promptly to our enquiry, came round to see us and assured us our computer was not beyond help. All fixed within a couple of days. Don’t think they could have done more. Excellent.” - Geoff Rendle, Winslow

Author Frederick Forsyth will be with us.
Our third Literary Festival sees Buckingham hosting another glittering array of speakers. It is a great pleasure to see that the reputation we have already established is attracting literary figures of the highest quality to Buckingham. So welcome to the Festival and I hope that you leave having been inspired, challenged and entertained by the array of stimulating events. The three day event, which takes place from Thursday 14 June to Sunday 17 June 2018, will bring an exciting mix of talks, discussions and entertainment to the beautiful market town of Buckingham. We start the whole thing off with a new event for us – a pub quiz. This is designed to entertain and to challenge both your literary and local knowledge with some general questions thrown in for good measure. The evening starts at 6.30 with a drink and the questions start flying at 7.00. There is a supper break to look at the half way scores before declaring the winners and awarding their prize at 9.30. The festival proper starts with a hugely important author – we are delighted that Frederick Forsyth has “come out of retirement” to be with us. His new book The Fox is not out until September but he will have a feast of other stories and some insight into his new book. Booker prize winner Ben Okri will be discussing his latest poetry compilation, The Poetry of Protest, Lady Antonia Fraser will be in conversation with Antony Seldon with her new books and career and satirist Craig Brown will be talking about his latest book, Ma’am Darling: 99 Glimpses of Princess Margaret. From the world of politics will be Lord Adonis, as well as John Bercow MP and former MP and last Governor of Hong Kong, Chris Patten. We are once again putting on a Shakespeare Play in the lovely gardens of The Old Mill. This year the Castle Theatre Company will be performing Twelfth Night. These are just some of the events in store. For more information on events taking place at the festival and to buy your tickets, please visit www.bucklitfest.org or follow @bucklitfest on twitter. Tickets can also be bought at the Buckingham Bookshop 01280 820365 and the Old Gaol 01280 823020.

The Energy Effect Fitness Studio brings you a huge variety of classes, in a fabulous, newly converted venue, with a lovely friendly atmosphere. Owner Kirsty Davies always enjoyed taking part in a variety of fitness classes, so when the time came to return to work after having her 2 daughters, in 2009 she decided to train to be an instructor. After passing her Level 2 Exercise to Music qualification, she trained to teach Zumba and initially set up one Zumba class and one Body Conditioning class a week and much to her delight they were packed and numbers continued to increase! Kirsty has continued to train and in 2016 was ready to set up her very own fitness studio on the Industrial Estate in Buckingham. She now teaches a huge array of different classes with something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for a fierce Body Conditioning class, a crazy Clubbercise session, an amazing workout at Piloxing, a calmer low impact Dancercise Gold class or you’re just desperate to give those Boogie Bounce trampolines a go, there’s something for everyone. She is now a qualified Boxercise instructor and also offers Kettlecise, Spinning and Metafit classes too! IN YOUR GARDEN
Topical advice from Buckingham Garden Centre’s, Chris Day
‘My garden is my most beautiful masterpiece.’ said Claude Monet, the famous French impressionist painter. Looking out into our patches, the garden is finally basking in colour and productivity helped by some good weather. Now is all about entertaining and enjoying your garden this summer. START OFF If you’ve never grown strawberries then you are missing out on some great flavours! You can buy young plants now in 9cm pots to establish them in a new strawberry bed or grow them in pots, baskets or windowboxes. Give them a good start in some well-prepared soil by adding some Bonemeal and a 5ml teaspoon of RootGrow to each planting hole as you plant. To get bumper crops, strawberries need plenty of water and a liquid feed as soon as the flowers open and then to be regularly fed until the last fruits are harvested. VEG PLOT Keep the sowing flowing for salad leaves, lettuces, radishes and spring onions. Remember continuity is the key and ‘little an often’ sowings will provide a regular crop for the kitchen. Sow Spinach and Kale. Both are useful crops that are easy to grow and are good to eat. Sow F1 varieties for reliable performance - Spinach ‘Emilia’ F1 (pictured) has good mildew resistance and is slow to bolt. The seed is available from Mr Fothergill’s. Look out for Kale ‘Yurok’ F1 from Thompson & Morgan seeds. There’s no doubt Kale is becoming increasingly popular and this ‘Cavolo Nero’ variety is the first F1 variety available. Compact, upright plants produce heavily crinkled leaves of a dark blue-green colour. Use thinnings for salads. Keep cutting ‘cut and come again’ salad leaves and make sure the soil doesn’t dry out to prevent them bolting. Stop cutting asparagus in mid to late June. This allows plants to gather strength in order to give a good crop next year. Help the process by giving the beds a hoe to remove weeds, feed with blood fish and bone and mulch with some organic matter. Tomatoes can still be planted and should be moved on into larger pots as their roots become visible at the bottom of the pot. You’ll need a sunny location for your Tomatoes, Peppers and Aubergines outdoors. A well sized pot, say 40cm in diameter, will provide a good starting point and use a decent multipurpose compost, preferably one with added John Innes, to grow them in. You should commence liquid feeding after six weeks from planting – so pop a reminder on your kitchen planner and use a high potash fertiliser such as Phostrogen or Tomorite on a weekly basis.

JUNE - JULY 2018 MUST DO’S The late start to the season has meant lots of later plantings in our gardens so do keep new plants well-watered over the coming months. Remember a good thorough watering, say two by 2gallon watering cans once a week is better than infrequent smaller amounts applied willy-nilly. Check plant leaves for signs of nutrient deficiency. Yellowing (Chlorosis) or yellow margins on leaves are often seen on the likes of Camellias, Citrus, Hydrangeas and Laurels. A good balanced feed should do the trick to cure this or use something like Doff Sequested Iron. Make sure the birds have access to fresh water in birdbaths or shallow dishes in the garden. Pinch back or better still perform the ‘Chelsea Chop’ by cutting the stems back by half on all tall growing late summer and autumn bloomers like Asters, Helianthus, Monarda, Rudbeckia and Sedum to make them stockier and encourage better flowering, and also so they don’t bloom too early. Be prepared for ‘June Drop’ of fruit from fruit trees. Nature is simply naturally thinning out the developing fruit to a manageable crop size. Clean up any fallen fruit. If you want to prune or shear your evergreens, do so as soon as the new growth starts to turn a darker green. On existing hedges do wait until any nesting birds have flown their nests before you start on any major hedge cutting projects. Once the Wisteria finishes blooming in late June or early July, you can do a maintenance prune to keep it in check by cutting back the whippy green shoots of the current year’s growth to five or six leaves. This controls the size of the Wisteria, preventing it getting into guttering and windows, and encourages it to form flower buds rather than green growth. Again, if you are planning to feed, keep it balanced and general rather than too high in nitrogen. LAWNS If you are planning to sow a new lawn in early autumn, finish any deep cultivation now so that the area has plenty of time to settle naturally. It also provides several months during which you can hoe out any weed seedlings that may appear. June is the last opportunity to apply lawn-sand or specific lawn weed killers to remove broadleaved weeds. Often during June, the seed heads of grass appear. This is perfectly natural and there is nothing you can do to stop them forming. They usually defy cutting by cylinder mowers so either run over the lawn with a rotary mower or use sheers to remove them. Increase mowing frequency, a little and often is the key at this time of the year to a great looking lawn. To advertise call 07882 194830 or visit www.communitycontact.co.uk

COMMUNITY CONTACT MAGAZINE FLOWER BORDERS Pinch out the growing tips of dahlias to create bushy plants. Sow seeds of annual flowers to fill gaps. Mix the seeds into sand or cover seeds with a mix of potting compost and sand so you can easily spot which areas you have sown and don’t enthusiastically hoe or pull up seedlings by mistake. Remember to keep the soil moist until they have germinated and the seedlings have grown into their space. Good hardy annuals to sow include Calendula, Godetia, Larkspur and Nasturtium – all are fast growing and reliable. Divide Bearded Irises a couple of weeks after they have finished flowering by lifting plants, breaking off the older parts of the rhizome and keeping the firm plump pieces. Trim the leaves to just above the fan as this reduces stress, and replant facing the sun, with the top of the rhizome just visible as they need to soak up the sun. Watch for outbreaks of mildew that follows dry weather which particularly affects stressed plants. Remove any affected foliage as soon as you spot it before the problem spreads. Mildew looks like soft grey dusty mould. You can preventatively spray with Bayer Fungus Fighter and this product is also good for Box Blight, so give your Box hedging and topiary trained plants a spray now. Always read and follow the recommendations on the product before use. Keep pulling weeds - little and often works best. Five minutes here and there aiming to pull them before they flower and set seed is always a good plan. Remember a sharp Dutch hoe will slice through germinating weed seedlings with relative ease. Watch out for overzealous thugs and bullies that may be swamping better behaved plants and either cut back some foliage or pull out unwanted seedlings allowing light and air to reach all plants.

The Black Boy, Oving Food Review Situated in the heart of rural Buckinghamshire, 5 miles north of Aylesbury, is the Black Boy. Built in 1524 the pub is bursting with character and if you like a pub with a view – then look no further than the Black Boy! The Black boy has recently undergone a re-vamp of the restaurant and bar area. As you walk into the main bar you can see how much character the pub oozes. The Black Boy has a friendly vibe and welcomes all-comers, from families with young children, to people with dogs, solo diners and groups. What’s more is you can call in for anything from a pint and a bar snack to a full three course meal. The latter is what we were after, so I started with the Warm Pork Crackling with Apple Sauce while my husband chose Chargrilled Halloumi & Pineapple Salsa all home-made and wonderfully fresh. The crackling was excellent and the apple sauce was the perfect condiment! The Halloumi was cooked to perfection and we thought the pineapple salsa complimented the overall dish. My main was the Bang Bang Chicken Skewers, Neil had the all time classic, Ham, Egg & Chips and Archie, our oneyear-old son, had the Sausage & Mash from the children’s menu.

JUNE - JULY 2018 My Bang Bang chicken skewers had a delicious oriental flavour with stir-fried crisp vegetables and noodles. My glass of New Zealand sauvignon was the ideal refreshment! Neil’s Ham Egg & Chips, a firm favourite in our household, was perfectly cooked. The Ham, had a satisfyingly delicious tenderness, together with a perfectly cooked dippy fried egg and extra thick crispy chips. The meal ended on a high, with a not-too-sweet banoffee pavalova and a more than delicious Chocolate & Strawberry Tart . If you’ve not visited the Black Boy recently, we would recommend wholeheartedly you visit in the coming summer months. Especially if you like a beautiful view whilst you eat delicious home-cooked food!
Why the name Black Boy? There are a number of similarly named pubs across the UK but the origins of the name is not clear cut. The most common belief is from when Charles II (1660-1685) was in exile his dark complexion earned him the nickname The Black Boy. Building on the reputation that The Black Boy has been offering true hospitality for centuries, Paul Mitchell and his team are delighted to continue supporting the local community by providing a fantastic place to meet, relax and enjoy a drink and fantastic fresh, seasonal food.
WIN A £50 VOUCHER to spend at the Black Boy by answering this simple question:
How old is the Black Boy? Email competitions@communitycontact.co.uk with the correct answer for your chance to win. Deadline for entries is 30th June 2018.

THE LIFE AND RHYMES OF BENJAMIN ZEPHANIAH BY BENJAMIN ZEPHANIAH Format: Hardback 1st Edition ISBN: 97801471168925 Price: £20.00 Hand Signed by Benjamin Zephaniah to the Title Page Please Note: Each signature is accompanied by a different piece to text which varies from book to book. BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week - Available from Cole’s Books
Benjamin Zephaniah, who has travelled the world for his art and his humanitarianism, now tells the one story that encompasses it all: the story of his life. In the early 1980s when punks and Rastas were on the streets protesting about unemployment, homelessness and the National Front, Benjamin’s poetry could be heard at demonstrations, outside police stations and on the dance floor. His mission was to take poetry everywhere, and to popularise it by reaching people who didn’t read books. His poetry was political, musical, radical and relevant. By the early 1990s, Benjamin had performed on every continent in the world (a feat which he achieved in only one year) and he hasn’t stopped performing and touring since. Nelson Mandela, after hearing Benjamin’s tribute to him while he was in prison, requested an introduction to the poet that grew into a lifelong relationship, inspiring Benjamin’s work with children in South Africa. Benjamin would also go on to be the first artist to record with The Wailers after the death of Bob Marley in a musical tribute to Nelson Mandela. The Life and Rhymes of Benjamin Zephaniah is a truly extraordinary life story which celebrates the power of poetry and the importance of pushing boundaries with the arts. About the Author: Benjamin Zephaniah is probably one of the most high-profile international authors writing today, with an enormous breadth of appeal, equally popular with adults and children. Most well-known for his performance poetry with a political edge for adults and ground-breaking performace poetry for children, Benjamin has also written several urban novels for teenagers. Benjamin has his own rap/reggae band and has appeared on Desert Island Discs. He travels the world speaking about his books and poetry.
