3 Important Considerations When Returning to Fitness I’m a Rich, a local personal trainer and head coach of Intent 2 Improve (www. intent2improve.com). My clients vary from people hitting 40 and realising they want to run a marathon, through to fat loss for summer holiday’s and pensioners wanting to stay strong and trim. Returning to fitness after some time away from consistent training can be daunting, in this short column I have outlined three principles that will stand you in good stead so that the next time you return is the last time you ever have to. 1. Train Smart, Train Forever If you have kids, you’ll have taught them this kind of thing before. Brush your teeth so they don’t decay later, sit up straight so you don’t develop bad posture. Yet so often as adults we expect to be able to buy a gym membership and immediately become a superhero. I understand the desire to achieve results rapidly, it’s human nature to shoot for the best case scenario. But unless there is an impending deadline (E.g. Holiday in 8 weeks) you’ll be much better off taking a step back and looking at the longer term. Don’t push yourself to the absolute limits from day one, start at a tolerable baseline and build with momentum. As an example, if you can hold a plank position with good technique for 30 seconds, don’t aim for 45 seconds and let technique slip to get you there. Stick with 30 seconds, but maybe do 3 rounds of that 30 in week 1, week 2 do 4 rounds, week 3 do 5 rounds and so on. That way you’re not compromising technique, but the total amount of time/demand on your

core is increasing (improving) week on week. 2. Hire Help! Yes I’m biased as a personal trainer myself but it is so important that you treat your body and health with the respect it deserves. You wouldn’t dream of attempting a complicated dental procedure on yourself, yet every man and his dog are self-certified fitness experts. Yes the basics are very simple; move more and eat less. But to have a program that brings significant improvements, is enjoyable and isn’t going to hurt you is more omplicated than you might think. By investing in fitness you literally have the opportunity to purchase health and happiness, now who wouldn’t want to buy that!? 3. Be Reasonable In Your Expectations I’ve already mentioned how it’s human nature to shoot for the best case scenario, but if you can avoid being overzealous in your expectations then you are far more likely to achieve amazing results long-term. The power is in long-term momentum. So many people throw in the towel after a few weeks because they feel they’re not seeing results fast enough, but follow the first two principles, trust the process, stay consistent and you’re well on your way to being fitter, stronger and happier. If you have any questions or wish to make an enquiry please contact me and I’d be happy to help - info@intent2improve.com. All the best, Rich.

There seems to be a few myths surrounding weight loss especially when that loss comes from using a meal replacement plan. I remember a while back, I was stood in my sons playground and a mum asked if I had lost weight. Flattered, I said yes so we started to talk about how I had managed to lose 3 stone in a short period of time. As soon as I mentioned I had lost it with the SMLDiet, she started to tell me how Meal Replacement diets were dangerous & she knew someone who had lost weight with a similar plan only to go and put it all back on again within a few months. This has always stayed in my mind. You see, I consider myself to be an informed person and know what I should and shouldn’t eat to maintain my weight & yes. I have been that yo-yo dieter where I have lost the weight, celebrated that weight loss with a takeaway and then comforted myself with ice cream over my weight gain and I have also been that person who then wonders why I am gaining weight and blames everyone and everything apart from myself. If I’m being honest, weight gain will happen to anyone no matter how they lose the weight. If we go back to eating how we used to and celebrating the fact it’s a weekend with a takeaway or comfort ourselves with chocolate when we are feeling low, we will put ALL the weight back on again but our bodies aren’t sponges. It’s not like the moment we come off our diet plans, our bodies go ‘right. Well that was a waste of time’ and sucks every morsel of fat from our food intake. In fact, in order for us to gain just 1lb of weight, we need to eat 3,500 calories MORE than our bodies need for nutritional purposes. That can easily be done in a weekend with fine dining and takeaways with loved ones. Another myth I hear around meal replacement dieting is that it’s a faddy diet and is dangerous. Meal replacement diets have been used in the NHS and private practices for over 20 years. They

are often used when a patient is about to undergo a gastric band to help them lose weight quickly. Any diet can be dangerous if in the wrong hands and unfortunately, I have seen diet plans pop up where I think wow that can’t be good for the health. However, I’m so thankful that over the last 10 years that I have worked as a weight management counsellor, so much research has gone into the meal replacement industry, the products and the weight loss plans themselves. For example, SMLDiet meal replacements contain at least 25% of the RDA for essential vitamins and minerals so whilst you are losing weight, your body is happy & healthy. In fact, when I lost my 3 stone on the SMLDiet, I never felt so healthy! Although we are a national company and have clients all over the UK & Europe, I also regularly see some of our clients for weigh in’s and chats to help spur them on to hit their goals. It’s a great feeling when you chat to a client and they say ‘hey Ally, I lost 9lbs this week’ or ‘I got into a lower dress size’ it’s such a wow feeling. Our weigh ins are free and so is our support so if you fancy losing weight, then give us a call on 01280 816933, drop me an email at wecare@thesmldiet.co.uk or place your order online at www.thesmldiet.com.

IN YOUR GARDEN

Topical advice from Buckingham Garden Centre’s, Chris Day

June 21st is the longest day of the year, and the extra light and warmth encourages the garden to put on an exuberant burst of growth. Great! However, this extra light and warmth also means weeds will sprout up from seemingly nowhere. Keep on top of them by hoeing regularly in dry conditions.

S

OW for continuity salad crops such as Salad Rocket, Radish, Spring Onions, Lettuce such as ‘Lollo Rosso’, a further sowing of broad beans, Rocket and those essential winter crops such as Cabbage (pictured), Purple Sprouting Broccoli, Kale and Brussels Sprouts as space becomes available. For the flower garden, you can also sow Canterbury Bells, Foxgloves, Forget-me-Nots, Sweet William, Wallflowers and Primrose/ Polyanthus either in trays grown in a protected frame or sown directly into some well-prepared seed beds. You would need to grow these plants on through the summer to eventually ‘bed out’ in the autumn.

L

AWNS The most important thing we can do is give it a muchdeserved drink. Water at times when the moisture is likely to soak in rather than evaporate, early morning or late evening is the best. Try to avoid giving your lawn a light sprinkling every day, as this can cause the roots to grow near the surface and be prone to drying out. When it’s dry, a good soaking once or twice a week is much more beneficial for your lawn. It’s worth noting that a well fed and maintained lawn will have a stronger and deeper root system, enabling it to withstand and recover from long dry periods. Why not feed and water your lawn at the same time? Hose end feeders such as Miracle-Gro Feeder can help you apply a feed as you water. Alternatively, soluble feeds such as Miracle Gro Lawn Food can be mixed and applied using a watering can. Try to mow your lawn at least once a week, keeping the height of the grass to about 10cm (2 inches). Ensure all clippings are collected and composted, unless you have a mulching mower, but avoid cutting too short as this will encourage weeds and moss to enter your lawn. In really hot, dry weather your lawn will become stressed and it is advisable to reduce the amount of mowing, and allow your grass to grow longer. If moss is a problem, choose a combined fertiliser and mosskiller when feeding the lawn. Again, if weeds are a problem in an established lawn opt for a combined weed, feed and mosskiller such as Evergreen 4-in-1. Always follow the instructions carefully when using chemicals.Set the tuber just below soil level and keep the area well-watered until you see the young shoots forming. Do provide some slug control and stake taller growing varieties if necessary.

JUNE - JULY 2017

C

ROPS Harvest your first early Potatoes from mid-June onwards. Take care when lifting the tubers not to damage them. The space vacated by the potato crop can be used for growing further rows of Peas (pictured), Beans (Dwarf French and/or Broad Beans) and Carrots, perhaps the easier to grow round varieties, such as ‘Atlas’ or ‘Rondo’. Elsewhere sow a range of leafy vegetables which can be grown as cut and come again, including: Basil, Chicory, Coriander, Chard, Corn Salad, Endive, Land Cress, Lettuce, Mizuna, Mustard, Pak Choi, Parsley, Radicchio, Rocket and Spinach. Crops usually grown for their roots such as Beetroot, Radish and Turnip also have leaves that are tasty when harvested young. Many of these we have as young plug plants, however you can buy vegetable seeds as individual varieties or look out for prepared salad seed mixes as this can be more economical. Those Tomatoes grown on a single stem (cordon) will need their side shoots removing regularly to encourage strong trusses of flowers so keeping the plant productive. AD’S TREAT A reminder, Father’s Day is on Sunday 18th June, so why not think about a gardening related gift to spoil him this year? Good gadget ideas include a new end of hose attachment for that summer watering and car washing, or a new gardening tool – a fork, spade, a kneeling mat or a pair of secateurs with a carry belt? Gardening gloves, in a wide range of durable designs are always a useful as well as practical gift. If growing things is your Dad’s thing, how about spoiling him with a fruit tree or perhaps a grape vine together with one of our locally sourced wines and micro-brewed beers - a perfect choice for a thirsty gardener! Please note you must be at least 18 years old to purchase alcohol!

RUIT Continue training fan-trained trees on to the horizontal wires and tie in the stems using raffia or Flexi-Tie. On espalier and cordon Apples and Pears shorten the lateral growing spurs to 2-3 leaves from the main stem – this will help stimulate fruits buds to develop along these short spurs through the rest of the summer. Pull off rather than cut off suckers appearing around the base of fruit trees. Thin Pears, Plums, Peaches, Nectarines and Apricots if they are overcrowded. Apples should be thinned at the end of June. As far as soft fruits - train in the new shoots of Blackberries and hybrid berries. Summer prune Red and White Currants and Gooseberries by reducing some of the older, non-productive growth. In view of the drier growing conditions this year, apply water around developing crops in the early evening to help reduce evapouration. Most fruiting plants will benefit from some foliar feeding to help stimulate new shoots as well as fruits. Peg down strawberry runners to increase your number of plants for next year and remove cloches from outdoor strawberries once they have finished cropping.

ATIO MAKEOVER As the weather continues to improve give your patio a mini makeover. You can add new pots, especially glazed and terracotta types, planted with colour, or introduce a raised bed for some home-grown veggie growing for the children to get involved in and to enjoy. If you are eating Al Fresco remember to have some citronella candles handy for later in the evening when the pesky mosquitoes come out and annoy everyone. Why not illuminate your garden with some Solar Lights this summer? Check out our new Smart Solar Flower Bloom designs, which adds elegance as well as practicality to your garden space?

P

RUNE late spring and early summer-flowering shrubs such as Mock Orange (Philadelphus) and Weigela after flowering has finished. It is a good idea to cut back to shoots that bore flowers to strong young shoots lower down. Each year cut out up to 20 percent of ageing stems to near the base to help re-invigorate the plant. Once your first flush of roses have finished then cut the plants back by around half to encourage another flush of blooms on repeat-flowering varieties. Don’t forget to encourage balanced growth after pruning by applying a fertiliser such as Vitax Q4. Do this in July and again in early September to encourage flowering wood for next spring.

M

UST-DO’S There’s still time to plant patio planters and baskets with summer colour, especially if you’ve been away on holiday and need to inject extra colour into the garden. Good exotics to establish now include Canna, Bamboo, Cordyline, Olive trees and hardy palms such as Trachycarpus and the stately Washingtonia. These should be grown in a decent-sized pot with good generous drainage in the base. A gritty compost containing one part John Innes No3, one part Multi-Purpose Compost and one part Horticultural Grit mixed thoroughly should give them a good start. You can also liquid feed with, for example, Phostrogen or Miracle-Gro each week from June onwards until September to keep them growing well. Remember all these plants are sun-loving so give them a bright, sunny location for best growing conditions.

The Twyford Pantry Isn’t it nice to see the sun making a breakthrough now and again?! It turns the mind to spending more time outside and for some of us, looking in the mirror and thinking about summer clothes and time for a bit of a slim down. Leo and I have been on a bit (I say in loose terms seeing as I hate being bound by rules when it comes to food!) of a carbfree/reduced diet. I have to say I feel better for it but yet to see enough progress. We’ve invested in the chef’s Tom Kerridge’s new book “Dopamine Diet” which focuses on this so I’ve included a great useful recipe from

“Lush” Toulouse Sausage Loaf (Serves 6)

there plus an easy Al Fresco menu including delicious halloumi cheese and tasty peaches. There’s also a short recipe I had to include for Cauliflower Rice which I’m sure many of you have tried already but if you haven’t – try it, it’s so easy, it’s healthy and it tastes good raw or cooked too which is what matters! Enjoy the arrival of the summer months everyone and even better, enjoy them with family, friends and great food! Love Tina x

Preheat oven to 180c/160 fan/gas 4 and bake the loaf for 40 minutes. Remove from the oven and carefully take off the foil. Cook uncovered for a further 15 minutes until golden brown. Leave to rest for 10 mins and serve either hot or cold with vegetables/salad or pickles as you wish. Source: Tom Kerridge “Dopamine Diet”

Halloumi with Griddled Vegetables (Serves 6) Ingredients 750g minced pork shoulder 250g minced pork belly 100g dried onion flakes 5 garlic cloves grated 3 tbsp chopped parsley 2 tbsp cracked black pepper 1 tbsp each of salt, fennel seeds and dried oregano 1 tsp cayenne pepper Vegetable oil for frying and cooking Method... Put all the meat and flavourings into a bowl andwork with your hands to mix well and firm up slightly. Fry a thumb size piece in a little oil to cook and taste for seasoning. When happy with the seasoning oil a large piece of foil and put the meat mixture in the middle. Shape into a 25cm sausage and wrap very tightly in foil and secure the ends, Rest in the fridge for at least 2 hours.

Ingredients 300 g frozen broad beans 675 g halloumi cheese 3 small bunches of asparagus 6 courgettes 6 tablespoons olive oil 6 shallots 600 g ripe cherry tomatoes 3 tablespoon capers 1 bunch of fresh sweet marjoram or oregano 1 bunch of fresh flat-leaf parsley

Please mention Community Contact when responding to adverts

JUNE - JULY 2017 Method... Put all the dressing ingredients in a clean jam jar and shake to combine. Cook the broad beans in boiling water for 5 minutes, or until tender. Drain and cool in cold water, then remove and discard the thick, white outer skins. Cut the halloumi into slices, trim and slice the asparagus, then finely slice the courgettes lengthways. Toss in the olive oil, then season. Heat a griddle or frying pan over a high heat, and then add the asparagus, courgettes and halloumi. Cook until nicely charred, remove and set aside. Finely slice the shallots into rings, halve the tomatoes, then layer up on a platter with the asparagus, courgettes, halloumi, broad beans and capers. Chop and scatter over the fresh herbs and finish with a drizzling of the dressing. Source: www.jamieoliver.com

Cauliflower Rice – “It’s the future!!” (Serves 4)

Method... Blitz the florets from a whole cauliflower in a food processor to make grains the size of rice. Put them in a microwaveable bowl and cover with cling film and pierce. No need to add water, trust me! Ping in microwave on high for 6-7 minutes and its ready! You can add flavours if you wish – finely chopped herbs, lemon juice, toasted cumin seeds etc but its great plain…..especially with a nice curry or chilli! Source: www.bbcgoodfood.com

Fresh Peaches Baked in Marsala with Mascarpone Cream (Serves 6)

Ingredients 6 firm ripe peaches 10 fl oz (275 ml) sweet Marsala wine 1½ oz (40 g) caster sugar 1 inch (2.5 cm) cinnamon stick 1 vanilla pod 1 rounded teaspoon arrowroot For the mascarpone cream: 4 rounded tbl spoons mascarpone 4 rounded tbl spoons 8 per cent fat fromage frais a few drops of pure vanilla extract 1 level dessert spoon Method... Halve the peaches, remove the stones and cover with boiling water for 30 seconds. Drain and remove the skins. Place the peach halves in a shallow oven-proof dish. Mix the Marsala and sugar and pour over. Add the cinnamon stick and vanilla pod and place in the centre of the oven uncovered and bake for 35-40 mins. When cooked remove from the oven, take out the peaches and drain the liquid into a small saucepan. Mix arrowroot with a little cold water add to the saucepan and stir over a low heat until slightly thickened. Pour over the peaches and leave to cool for 24 hours in the fridge. To make the mascarpone cream, beat all the ingredients together and serve with the peaches. Source: Delia Smith “Summer Collection”

Chickens as pets - Advice from Pets at Home one has its own unique personality. They may even allow themselves to be picked up if they trust you. They will usually live between four to seven years. There are many different varieties of chicken, but if you are keeping them for their eggs, then the larger breeds or hybrids are probably best suited to you. Hybrids will each lay one egg per day, although this will slow during winter and when they get older.

Chickens were one of the first animals domesticated by man. The main attraction for many potential owners is the prospect of fresh eggs, although they also make great pets and add character to any garden. Normally they’re very inquisitive and friendly, and each

Virtually any garden, however small, can house chickens. However, in some rare cases there can be local restrictions. Since chickens are an important commercial animal, there are regulations but these don’t apply to pet owners who eat or give their eggs away. The Department of Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) encourages pet owners to register their chickens with them, there is also lots of information available on their website. www.defra.gov.uk
