Christmas Markets not to miss... We can't think of anything more festive than taking those last couple of holiday days you have left and spending them on a weekend trip to a European Christmas market. Though it has been said that the Germans do the Christmas market best (and we have included a Deutsch location for you delectation), Austria, Estonia and even cities at home have made it onto our list of enchanting locations. These markets are the ideal spot to grab some prezzies and get yourself in the Christmas mood, whether you're a Scrooge or a full-on Christmas elf. So, grab your favourite duvet coat and prep your Instagram, these delightfully chilly destinations are where you need to head this December.
Allinn Christmas Market, Tallinn, Estonia Tallinn’s unspoilt medieval town centre plays host to possibly the prettiest Christmas Market on the map – not least because snow has blanketed the square for it annually since it started in 2001. There’s a cosy feel with just over 60 small wooden huts selling handcrafted wreaths, lamps and sheepskin rugs, plus plenty of gingerbread, local honeys and mulled wine to ward off the cold. Musicians and dancers weave through the crowds, while at the heart of it all, apart from the illuminated snow sculptures, lies Estonia’s most famous and largest Christmas tree.
Winchester Cathedral Christmas Market & Ice-rink, UK Claiming title of England’s Christmas Capital, Winchester’s Christmas Market is set in the shadow of the town’s cathedral and welcomes over 100 German-style wooden chalet stalls, all handpicked for their quality products, most of which can’t be bought on the high street. Fuel up at the food court with tasty German sausages, before enjoying the ultimate highlight: a romantic skate under the stars on the dazzling open-air ice rink.

OCTOBER - NOVEMBER 2018
Manchester Christmas Markets, UK It started with a cluster of wooden stalls but now, 15 years later, Manchester’s Christmas market has snowballed into an award-winning festive fantasia attracting seven million visitors yearly. Follow the 300 chalet-lined market trail across the city centre for all kinds of bespoke gifts, from fine jewellery to bonsai trees, while stopping for cocktails at the new pop-up-style Christmas Vintage Lounge on Exchange Square. The real highlight is the street food on Albert Square. With every European delicacy, from Spanish paella to Hungarian goulash, we defy you to leave on an empty stomach!
Prague Christmas Markets, Czech Republic Prague’s distinctively medieval backdrop of church domes, towers and magnificent ninth-century castle, provides the ultimate festive skyline. Stroll through cobbled streets, past hidden courtyards and over pretty bridges to Staromestské Námestie (the Old Town Square), or Wenceslas Square, for the largest and most magical markets. They are filled with atmospheric choirs, giant Christmas trees and fairy light-festooned stalls selling locally made gifts including luxe ceramics and scented candles.
Christkindlesmarkt, Nuremberg, Germany The Germans know a thing or two about Christmas markets. Over 2,500 are dotted around the country but Nuremberg’s 400-year-old Christkindlmarkt is arguably the most famous. Shining in the Bavarian city’s old town, this festive gem has it all: twinkling lights, super-strong glühwein and delicious Bratwurst. Each of the 180 stalls sell genuine tat-free treasures, from handmade candles to enameled music boxes, and special wardens ensure all products are locally made. It all adds to the authentic flavour and the buzzing Bierkeller next to the ice-rink is a guaranteed Christmas spirit booster.
Edinburgh Christmas Markets, UK Bringing traditional German flavour to the Scottish capital, stallholders at The European Market are from Frankfurt, while The Scottish Market serves up local delights. Treat your pooch to canine cookies from The Grassmarket on Saturdays, lose yourself in the fir tree maze and ride the Edinburgh wheel for fantastic city views. Once Christmas is wrapped up, it all kicks off again for Hogmanay: a legendary New Year’s party where 80,000 revelers come for music, fireworks and lashings of whisky.

IN YOUR GARDEN
Topical advice from Buckingham Garden Centre’s, Chris Day
Crime writer P. D. James once said: “It was one of those perfect English autumnal days which occur more frequently in memory than in life.” After the amazing summer the weather is finally returning to normal, so we need to be tackling the right things now as we prepare the garden for winter. NEW ARRIVALS Now is a great time to plant bare-rooted hedging, potted evergreen hedging (pictured Common Box), root wrapped roses, soft fruit bushes, ornamental and fruit trees now that plants are entering winter dormancy. Do make sure the soil is well improved working in generous amounts of home-produced, off the shelf planting compost or well-rotted manure to help improve the structure and moistureretention qualities of the soil. Work a generous amount of bone meal into the soil you use to backfill the plants. Consider applying some friendly fungi such as RootGrow on to the roots of your new plants to help in their establishment - particularly in new build gardens or where existing long-term hedges, shrubs and trees have been removed. Don’t skimp on applying mulches around the base of your newly planted plants to help maintain a moist growing medium. Look out for some welcome late colour from Aster, Echinacea, Japanese Anemones (pictured is the variety A. ‘Honorine Jobert’), Rudbeckia, Sedum and Verbena rigida to bridge any colour lacking gaps in your borders, especially where they can be seen from the house. SPRING PLANNING We are well and truly into the spring bulb planting season so don’t delay in getting your favourite Alliums, Crocus, Daffodils, Hyacinths, and Tulips into the soil before it gets too late for planting. Bulbs should be planted in holes two or three times as deep as the bulb itself. So, for example, a 2.5cm (1in) Crocus bulb needs to be planted in a hole 5-7.5cm (2-3in) deep. Remove weeds and incorporate lots of compost or other organic matter when planting bulbs. On heavy soils, dig in some horticultural grit. Bulbs grown in pots need good drainage so put plenty of crocks in the bottom and use a compost which drains well. For my pots I use two parts John Innes No 2 Compost with one-part horticultural grit. Specialised bulb composts are only necessary in pots with poor drainage, so good for indoor bulbs such as prepared Hyacinths and Narcissi. Don’t miss this season’s Spring Bulb of the Year, Crocus ‘Prins Claus’ (pictured). This superb spring-flowering variety has white flowers, marked boldly in dark purple on the outer face of the petals. It prefers full sun and any well-drained soil.

OCTOBER - NOVEMBER 2018 OVERWINTERING TIPS You need to bring into a frost-free place your seasonal summer bedders such Pelargoniums (tender Geraniums, pictured), tender Fuchsias, Cannas and other tender plants to offer protection through the winter. It is a good idea to cut back plants which you intend to overwinter to help reduce potential disease problems and also help improve air circulation around the plant. If you are lifting plants from the border, re-pot using some Levingtons compost putting into a pot size just a little larger than the root ball. If you bring inside a pot full of different plants, again cut them back so they can benefit from more light at the base of the plants. Keep all overwintered plants just moist; never overwater as the plants will survive better if drier through the winter months. If you bring them into a greenhouse, porch, well-lit shed or garage you will need to give additional protection with horticultural fleece during cold snaps. Routinely check over the plants, water and take off any dead leaves as necessary. HOUSEPLANTS Reduce watering of houseplants as the days shorten and growth slows. It is a good idea to place tropical houseplants on trays of wet gravel to counteract the drop in humidity when the central heating comes on. Grouping them together can also help to create a more humid microclimate. Start feeding Christmas cacti as the buds will be developing over the next few months. Apply a high potash feed such as Tomorite every 2-3 weeks. MUST DO’S Last chance to trim back deciduous hedges to keep them looking tidy over the winter. Climbing roses should be pruned now if not done after flowering in August. Shrubs normally pruned hard in the spring such as Buddleja davidii, Cornus alba, taller growing David Austin Roses and Lavatera, can be cut back by half now, to prevent wind rock and to help neaten their appearance. Continue to harvest autumn fruiting raspberries. Plant Wallflowers, Forgetme-Not, Bellis, Primula, Viola (including winter Pansies) and other spring bedding plants in prepared ground or pots. Place nets over small ponds to prevent autumn leaves falling in. Remove pumps or fountains and removable lighting systems, clean them, and store over winter in a safe place. If you have not yet fixed any shed roof leaks or replaced broken glasshouse panes, or worn glazing putty and lost glazing clips, then now is your last chance to do so before the greenhouse is full of tender plants for overwintering. Empty any fuel remaining in the fuel tank of your lawnmower then get this and hedge trimmers (plus any other power tools not needed over the winter) serviced now in preparation for next year. COMMUNITY CONTACT MAGAZINE LAWN CARE It’s traditional to give lawns a pick-me-up in October, to revitalise them after dry summer weather and to ensure they are fit enough to get through winter. Start off by controlling moss, which is often found in patches under trees or in the shade of hedges. Treat by spreading a moss killer across the lawn and within two weeks the moss will have died and turned black. This will have to be raked out. If you have just the odd patch you can remove the moss by vigorously raking the surface with a spring-tined lawn rake. At the same time, you’ll remove masses of old grass clippings and other debris that can build up on the surface of the lawn, forming a layer called thatch. This can seriously hinder drainage and encourage weeds and turf diseases. Areas of the lawn that receive heavy traffic, such as play areas, often become very compacted which can cause problems with drainage, weeds and moss. Improve this by pushing a garden fork into the ground as far as you can, then wiggle it backwards and forwards to make air channels. Repeat this every 10cm (4in) across the area. To finish off, perk up tired lawns by giving them a feed. Use an autumn lawn fertiliser, which is high in phosphates and potash. This will help strong roots to develop, which will produce healthy green grass. MAKE A DATE - AUTUMN ESSESNTIALS WORKSHOP Our Autumn Essentials Workshop with Clare Price will be held on Saturday 20th October from 10am – 1pm. The Workshop looks at the three main tasks - pruning, planting of potted and bare-root plants and propagation - which command our attention at this time of the year. The Workshop will be part demo and part practical so please bring along suitable clothing, footwear, gloves and sharp secateurs. Booking for this workshop is essential as we restrict places to 15 so everyone gets individual attention in the practical sessions. The cost for our Garden Club Members is £19.99 and £24.99 for non-members. The price includes tea or filter coffee. Please contact our Customer Service Desk on 01280 822133 for full details and to book.blades and collect the clippings.

RELISH: MY LIFE ON A PLATE BY PRUE LEITH Format: Hardback Edition ISBN: 9781787472099 Price: £20.00 Hand Signed by Prue Leith to the Title Page Available from Cole’s Books
The eye-opening story of one woman’s incredible appetite for life: the memoirs of Prue Leith, judge of C4’s GREAT BRITISH BAKE OFF and former judge of BBC2’s GREAT BRITISH MENU. Now fully revised and updated, including Prue falling in love and marrying again in her 70s. ‘What a terrific tale it is - of a South African girl who could stand the heat and made the kitchen into a remarkable career’ Telegraph Prue Leith describes herself as greedy in all senses of the word. Cook, caterer, restaurateur, food writer, journalist, novelist, businesswoman, teacher, television presenter, charity worker, lover, wife and mother, she has certainly been greedy for life. Prue came to London in the early 1960s and, not long afterwards, opened Leith’s Restaurant. By the mid-seventies she was a food columnist on the Daily Mail, had published several cookbooks and opened Leith’s School of Food and Wine. But it wasn’t all work. Prue writes with honesty of her love life, her longing for children, the birth of her son, the adoption of her daughter and much else besides. In this fully revised and updated edition she tells of how she met, fell in love with and married John Playfair as well as her exciting new role as a judge on Great British Bake Off. Prue’s down-to-earth attitude to life and her remarkable energy are an inspiration to anyone. About the Author: As a cook, restaurateur, food writer and business woman, Prue Leith has played a key role in the revolution of Britain’s eating habits since the 1960s, and was recently announced as one of the judges on Channel 4’s Great British Bake Off. With twelve cookery books under her belt, Prue gave up writing about food to concentrate on fiction. She has written seven romantic novels and a memoir, Relish. The Prodigal Daughter is the second novel in a trilogy that began with The Food of Love. All Prue’s books are in print with Quercus. She lives in Gloucestershire.

Heading into Autumn with Beautifully Different! Well it’s still warm, and the forecast is for an Indian Summer. We’re starting to embrace all the new colours for Autumn, using lightweight fabrics to wear now but perfect for layering as the weather cools. These gorgeous tops are a fine example, in a fine weave linen with silk trim, they have been a winner for us as they’re a very flattering shape and look great over a pair of linen trousers, skinny jeans or our famous Robells. At £44 they are a great price and layered with a vest underneath or a long cardi over the top they will carry you right through the season. As the months go by and the season slowly starts to change, we see the rich hues of the late summer harvest start to appear. With the deep lush purples of the ripening berries and the yellows and reds of the turning leaves, these beautiful natural colours influence the way we want to dress. The light fresh colours of spring and summer seem somehow inappropriate among the autumnal shades. Twice a year the colour company Pantone issue a forecast trend for the coming season. This has a major influence on the production of everything from paints and soft furnishings to clothing and accessories and this season has some of our favourites. As you can see, this coming season we can look forward to stunning colours such as Red Pear (a deep rust red), Ceylon Yellow (a vibrant mustard), Valiant Red (a brave and vibrant red) and one of our favourites Quetzal Green which is a deep teal and looks amazing on pretty much everyone! Also included is Pantone’s colour of the year Ultra Violet, this has been a strong colour for summer, and all the variants such as aubergine and purple are coming through for autumn which is exciting for us as we LOVE these colours. We find if you don’t particularly suit a colour but want to include it in your wardrobe, adding an accessory in that colour or finding a base colour with a splash of the desired colour is always a good way to introduce it to your look.
