IN YOUR GARDEN

Topical advice from Buckingham Garden Centre’s, Chris Day

‘Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes but when you look back everything is different.’ said C. S. Lewis, the famous British novelist, poet, academic and broadcaster. As late summer approaches, there is a final surge of growth, both for flower and foliage, to make our plots a visual treat for all our senses. POT UP Pot up Potato tubers for Christmas appear in the Garden Centre in July and will need to be planted up promptly to secure a crop of tasty spuds for later in the year. We’ll be stocking the following varieties ‘Duke of York’, ‘Red Duke of York’, ‘Maris Peer’ and ‘Pentland Javelin’. A pack of nine tubers costs £2.99. Growing them is straightforward. Grow a single tuber in a 20cm (8in) pot setting them in some multipurpose compost in the base of the pot and then add further compost regularly as the plants. This is just like ‘earthing up’ your spuds in the open soil. Keep the plants well watered and give a liquid feed with a regular tomato feed commencing six weeks from planting to get the best results. Unbelievably, it is time to start thinking about bulbs for this year and next. As soon as we hit mid-August the spring bulbs start to appear, including prepared varieties of Narcissi, Tulip and Hyacinth for Christmas flowering, so make plans now and don’t delay if you need specific varieties or colours. Colchicums can also be planted during August. They look best surrounded by grass or other plants (such as ground hugging Sedum, pictured with C. ‘Waterlily’) since their flowers arrive (usually from September onwards) before their leaves which appear in the spring. VEG PLOT Your vegetable garden should be in full swing. It may be hard to motivate yourself to keep sowing seeds when you are facing a glut of courgettes, amongst others, but you will thank yourself if you can summon up the energy to sow some rows of Chard, Kale and winter Lettuces like ‘Vailan’ (sometimes called ‘Winter Gem’) or ‘All Year Round’ to keep you going into the winter and beyond. Leave out some blocks of wood or up turned clay pots for slugs to shelter in overnight and then turn them over in the morning to give the birds a slug-feast. Blossom end rot can occur in Tomatoes that have been watered haphazardly. You will see a black spot on the end of any tomato which has succumbed and this will spread and rot the tomato. Keep watering your plants thoroughly and on a regular watering pattern to try to prevent the condition worsening.

AUGUST - SEPTEMBER 2018 EARWIGS Earwigs can prove a nuisance in August, especially amongst the Dahlias, as they eat the young shoots and leaves at night and may even attack other plants such as Delphiniums and Asters. A traditional method of trapping them is to place a flower pot, preferably a clay one, filled with straw, shredded newspaper or grass clippings, upside down on top of a stake near the plants at risk. The earwigs will collect in the pot, as they hide from the light. Simply remove the pot each morning and dispose of the contents – hot water usually does the trick! Then refill with straw, shredded newspaper or grass and set the trap again for the next evening. MUST DO’S Cut back perennials, especially ones like Achilleas which have a tendency to collapse and smother plants around them. Late flowering perennials like Asters, Coreopsis and Rudbeckias are worth staking. Hardy Geraniums that are now over should be cut down, watered and fed in the hope that they may return with a vengeance for a late autumn show. Book a friend or somebody to keep watering your garden and harvesting any veg while you are away on holiday. Take Pelargonium cuttings if you intend to overwinter plants in a frost-free greenhouse or well-lit shed. Use a gritty compost consisting of a 50:50 mixture of a multi-purpose compost and Vermiculite as your potting medium. The leaves of scented pelargoniums are great flavourers for puddings - and they will scent your bath too. During a hot spell, splash water on the floor of your greenhouse to keep the atmosphere humid and to cool the proceedings. Leave the doors and ventilators open during the day. Newly planted trees, shrubs and perennials, the basics apply: water wisely and thoroughly. Allow two gallons of water per plant twice a week to help establishment. Weed around the base of plants on a dry day, preferably using a Dutch hoe which will cut the tops of the weed off and leave them to wither and compost back down into the soil. Many of the medicinal herbs such as Valerian, Feverfew, Camomile and St John’s Wort (pictured in hands) are at their best in August and these can all be harvested now. Culinary herbs may benefit from a trim back to encourage a new flush of tasty leaves that you can harvest before the frosts. If you have the likes of Sage, Lemon Verbena, Rosemary, Thyme and Lavender then now is a good time to take semi-ripe cuttings. Fill up your bird baths with water not only because the birds will appreciate it but because they eat slugs and other pests. Keeping water available it attracts them and keeps them in your garden. AUGUST - SEPTEMBER 2018

Continue to water and feed containers and hanging baskets regularly to help maintain steady growth and encourage further flowers. Switching feeds is a good idea too. High nitrogen fertilisers such as Miracle-Gro can be alternated with high potassium feeds such as Phostrogen or any of the specific Tomato fertilisers. By doing this you will help encourage a further flurry of leafy growth which in turn will mean more stems and shoots to carry additional blooms later in the season. Remember plants are just like us, a change in food doesn’t do any harm and it can be beneficial in the longer term. If you are growing Sweet Peas keep on cutting to help stimulate more blooms to fill your house with scent. Remember they will benefit from a high potassium feed along the row or at the base of the wigwam every 7-10 days. LAWNS Care of the lawn at this time of the year very much depends on the state of the weather. If it has been hot and dry, there won’t be too much growth, so set the mower blades on high and leave the clippings to act as a mulch to preserve what little moisture there is. If the weather has been wet and growth generally lush, lower the blades and collect the clippings. There is still time to apply a selective lawn weedkiller such as Weedol Lawn Weedkiller to eradicate difficult to control weeds such as Dandelion, Plantain and Common Mouseear. Towards the end of August and into the autumn use a fertiliser such as Evergreen Autumn Lawn Care which is high in potash and phosphates to ripen the grass and to strengthen the roots and to help the grass to survive the rigours of the winter ahead.

ENGLISH BY BEN FOGLE Format: Hardback 1st Edition ISBN: 9780008222246 Price: £20.00 Hardback 1st Edition Hand Signed by Ben Fogle to the Title Page New and Unread Available from Cole’s Books

What makes the English English? Is it their eccentricity, their passionate love (or, indeed, hatred) of Marmite – or is it something less easily defined? Beginning at the top of a muddy Gloucestershire slope at the Coopers Hill cheese-rolling contest and traversing a landscape of lawns and queues, coastlines and sporting arenas, Ben Fogle takes us on a journey through the peculiarly English: a country of wax jackets, cricket, boat races and jellied eels, by way of national treasures such as the shipping forecast, fish and chips and the Wellington boot. Not to mention the Dunkirk spirit of relentless optimism in the face of adversity, be it the heroic failure of Captain Scott’s doomed Antarctic expedition, or simply the perennial hope for better weather.

The archetypal Englishman, lover of labradors and Land Rovers yet holder of two passports Ben applauds all things quintessentially English while also paying tribute to the history, culture and ideas adopted with such gusto that they have become part of the fabric of the country. Written with Ben’s trademark warmth and wit, this is a light-hearted yet touching tribute to all things English. About the Author: Ben Fogle is a presenter, writer, adventurer and dog lover. His passion for animals and wildlife has taken him all over the world, and he has presented numerous programmes including the BBC’s Animal Park, Wild in Africa, Countryfile, Crufts, One Man and His Dog and Extreme Dreams. He writes regularly for the Sunday Telegraph and the Independent and has written numerous bestselling books. He campaigns tirelessly for conservation, the environment and animal welfare, is an ambassador for WWF, Médecins Sans Frontières and Tusk, a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and the President of the Campaign for National Parks.
